Year ago the Hawks got run out of the building uh ultimately getting beat by 20 but Iowa has defeated Northwestern nine of the last 10 meetings our feature this afternoon is on Clear Lake native Brad Floyd Brad has kept the Hawkeye basketball team healthy for well 13 years
Brad Floy studied and learned from the Hall of Famer John stref he does so much more than tape ankles Floy says on balance this Hawkeye basketball season has been very fortunate injury-wise it’s always uh good get a full lineup out there uh game in game out I know it helps coach out a
Lot uh ankle sprains which are are commonality uh in uh uh the normality for college basketball but uh I think a logi dembele going down underneath the basket a few weeks ago and you know 5 10 years ago probably would have kept him out of a half a dozen games I think he
Missed one maybe two uh what’s different about ankle injuries uh in terms of treatment that maybe we didn’t see a decade ago yeah well L you first of all I put that on him he was just amazing with how he recovered and just dealing with it I mean not everybody can come
Back that quickly with that and so he was in the the right head space to want to come back that soon cuz not everybody feels ready so I’ll put a lot of the credit to him uh but we do have a pretty good system when we take care of him see
A lot of them they’re always going to happen it’s just how you manage them once they happen and trying to prevent them the best you can so uh you know in his case it was just really getting the strength back right away as range back
And then just him feeling ready to go so I’ll give him the credit for uh just doing the work and uh then getting out in the court as soon as he felt he could help the team uh you learned from the best in John stref and the great
Training staff at Iowa um what in your and you’ve been here a while now Brad what in your term uh has been the most significant in advancement in day-to-day training technique well first John stre has been an amazing uh I give him all the credit for where I’m at in my career
And setting me up uh I learned a ton from I mean he was in the business 40 years so I I could go on and on about stref and and what he did not just for me but for a profession uh but I think just our advancements medically I mean
We have a great Sports Medicine staff with our team Physicians uh fellows that we work with so just our our access to Imaging and uh being the quick care that we can get for uh some of these significant injuries like we’re not waiting around to kind of see what
Happens we’re able to to move quick on anything we need uh so just technology and access to it and we’re you know fortunate Iowa Big 10 research University where we’ve got these facilities and this technology and and it just sets these guys up for being able to come back sooner being able to
Get the most out of their career uh so I think it’s just the the place we’re at the University of Iowa and our medical system is just second to none so um I’m fortunate to work here I’m fortunate to have players uh that are really good

Really focus on Improvement and uh you know pitches and field stuff and all those things that go with pitching didn’t have a chance to do it so um this fall was was big for Brody and his development so that he could just focus on himself and what he needed to do to
Be a better pitcher and um it was pretty apparent in early September that having Brody go through the fall like the rest of the pitchers where you know we play some games and we’re competing and people come to watch and Scouts are coming to watch that um as long as there
Were people there and it was another team Brody wasn’t going to change or get better at the things he needed to he was just going to go back to what he knew and how to compete and if that makes sense so we you know uh coach McGrath
