Hi it’s Paul welcome to Paul Kelly golf I’m here in my workshop today and I was tinkering around with some Putters and I thought I would revisit a video that I kind of touched on a couple of years ago do looks matter when purchasing a putter
Do you have to like the looks of your putter in order for it to perform right stay tuned you’re going to like this one a while back my golf spy did a survey of almost 800 golfers and they asked the question are looks important in your putter as far as its performance and
Almost 80% of the people said yes 80% of the people said yes putter looks are important so they followed up that survey with a test and they got a large sample group of people and a large sample group of Putters and those Putters ranged from all styles and all
Models all shapes and sizes and they put them to a task and they rank those from most appealing to least appealing all the way down the line of the those Putters and they got people to try those Putters and recorded the results recorded the data and then listed the
Results of best performing to worst performing and then they put them side by side how did the ones that appealed most to people perform how did the ones that didn’t appeal visually to people perform and the result was is that looks had absolutely nothing to do with
Performance none of the top five in appealing were in the top five in performance so if we look look at the table and we look at the ones that performed the best one through five the top five performing and we look at where they finished in appeal curbside appeal
Looks the things that people want to have in their bag we can see they didn’t match up at all the number one performing putter was the Ping catch midsize and that finished number 38 in appeal the next one Odyssey white hot RX number number one finish 10th in appeal
Odyssey tow up number one 42nd in appeal ping Cadence TR catch 26th in appeal the MLA tour dream number 43 in appeal so these were your top five performing Putters that had no curb appeal which means that the golfers would have left those on the shelf and they would have
Picked up the ones that appeal to them most visually and then this is what would have happened the number one most appealing putter was the tulon Madison and finished seventh in performance number two appealing the betard bb1 finished 28th in performance the third the carbon holiday finished eighth in
Performance fourth the Ping 1966 TR number two answer finished 21st in performance and the Ping 1966 TR answer finished 30th in performance so what does it tell us well it tells us that looks are not important and that curb appeal is what drives people because this is the ones that they would have
Bought when they went into the store and everybody likes the blades which is why the blades finished one through five in curb appeal but they did not finish one through five in performance so the moral of the story is if you’re buying a putter the only thing the only thing
That should ever worry you is how it performs not what it looks like misconception that you need to like the look of your putter is just that it’s a misconception the data proves that it’s not true and I see this in my fittings all the time when I record data on
People now it does perform for some people a lot of people but the trick is you’re not a lot of people you’re one person and that one person is important you should be playing what works best for you so put your curve appeal and your like and your personal preference
