Jake Knapp Swing Analysis – SMOOTHEST Swing on Tour!

If you had as much fun as I did watching Jake Knapp’s final round, you will love this break down of Jake Knapp’s golf swing. In this video I wanted to point out some of the most important factors in his swing that set him apart. I am also pointing out which parts amateurs are generally not so familiar with or are unsure of the effect they have on distance, power and contact.

Hi guys so today we are going to be analyzing Jake kap’s swing um he is the player that won yesterday in Mexico on the PJ tour and he is such a cool dude I mean I feel like he should be surfing not golfing but I’m glad he’s golfing

Because he’s really freaking great so let’s jump into his swing because he has a very particular swing in a very good way he literally looks like he’s just swinging it so easy and he’s like the new definition of amazing Rhythm for me but he also hammers it I mean this guy

Nukes it he absolutely could be one of long drive people if he you know focused on just hitting it far not straight so but hey we’re in the camp straight and far so um I love what he’s doing he’s an incredible player and I want to break

This swing down for you guys so here we have a swing and I am going to kind of walk you through the key points of this and why it’s so great and why it’s so you know unique what’s unique about it what’s kind of common about it that you

See in really good players um and there’s a couple things that I want to point out to you guys so here I’m drawing some lines I’m drawing the line down from um his backside also up his shaft angle and on top of his head because those are key for us to kind of

Understand what’s going on and now as he’s taking his Club back you can see that his Club headit is outside his hands at all times so this is something that amateurs get wrong a lot because the club head rolls inside but in the E to 9 a clock position his Club head is

Outside now when he stands up in the transition to his actual back swing you can see him drawing a line that is a bit steeper so this points inside of his actual ball if you will so that pink line that I drew parallel to the shaft

Is pointing now inside of his ball if you were to you know draw it all the way down um which means he’s kind of steep in the back swing but that’s really good because that helps him feel the transition to shallow so um and this is

Is a common kind of technique to steep to shallow steep to shallow because you feel the difference and some players really love feeling that shallowing and if you were to take it back more shallow you wouldn’t really feel the difference um there’s definitely really good players that have more one plane swings

That take it back the same shallow or steepness than they take it through um but here in Jake’s situation he goes back a little steep and then he shallows it really nicely going through so now as we continue to look at his swing you can also see that his head has dropped a

Little bit when he’s getting up into his top position and he’s already transitioning which is why his head is dropping so he’s really kind of sitting down into his squat into his transition you can also see this because uh if you look at this line that’s drawing down

From his you know backside you can see that his pocket is actually sticking past uh past that pink line right now which means he’s actually sat back even more again that’s something that amateurs usually do not do do they if anything jump forward to create power

But really what these Pros do is they sit down into their transition and they push their butt backwards which is a key key move when it comes to actual power now you can also see that Jake has a little bit longer of a swing but he’s

Really good in his transition so he does go past parallel a little bit here but if you look at his Club face it’s actually dead Square he has really nice high hands here and then as he is transitioning down he gets really narrow um in his transition with his hands but

That’s great I mean this is so much lag and I do want you to see his shoulders are turned fully 90° towards us I mean you can see that they’re literally facing us but yet in his transition his hips right here are pretty much facing the target already so that is the upper

And lower body separation which is so important for distance and power and I understand that this is something this particular move is exactly what most golfers struggle with including myself I mean this is you have to have a lot of flexibility you have to have a ton of

Athleticism um and you can’t have any injuries so you know Crossing all these things off the list is impossible for the day-to-day golfer but it’s still really interesting to see and I want to point out that this is where the power lies this separation of upper and lower

Body and I feel like people have heard that term a lot probably even if you’re an amateur um but this is what it means exactly this shoulders are facing us lower body is already shifting and turning towards the target and then here is where we can see the

Shallowing bit that I was referring to before so here you can see that I’m going to draw these lines in green now where his shaft in the same position well his hands are in the same position shaft definitely isn’t you can see that difference in an angle so this is where

He went from his back swing and steep shaft angle to a shallowing right there um so that is huge that is the difference that I was referring to that he’s feeling when he’s going up steep then he’s shallowing and now you’re going to say oh why is he shallowing how

Can I shallow and there’s actually a video that I spoke about this in my YouTube channel I’m going to link it down below for you guys to watch to where I give you three awesome feels to do exactly this um but right here I’m going to explain why he’s able to do it

So if you look at his shoulder what does his shoulder do first thing his shoulder does in his downswing what is it it’s essentially dropping it is dropping and it is literally just not rotating forward it’s dropping back see this dropping down just down there’s no forward rotation from off the shoulder

And that’s what allows him to really tuck That Elbow into his pocket and bring it back down to the ball here you can see a little bit of a gap actually in his right forearm and his left for which means he’s coming from the inside he’s a drawer which is

Great uh for him and whenever you see that it means that you know you’re kind of coming from the inside a little bit which is awesome for a draw and that’s how Jake my friends is able to hammer this ball and win on the PJ tour I hope

You L this and this was interesting and um keep an eye out for this guy because this certainly isn’t the last time he wants

  1. Your videos are EXCELLENT!!! I am a subscriber and learn SO MUCH from them. You do a terrific job of describing feels when trying to make swing changes. I am almost 73 but maintain a 5.9 HI and truly enjoy working on my game. Your recent video about the "release" was very helpful – let your core control the swing. When you are able – I would very much enjoy you posting some videos about pitching, chipping and how to gain distance with the driver. Thanks again and keep up the good work. All the best . . .

  2. I noticed he bends his left elbow at the top of the swing. He really does hammer it! Nice to see some newer guys winning on the tour. Thanks for the break down especially the note about sitting into the downswing. I'm working on that.

  3. Excellent job with analysis! Reminds me of Freddy 'Boom Boom' Couples. I'd love to watch another with a driver swing.

  4. You put a lot of effort into bringing this analysis to us and we appreciate it! There is a lot to the swing and for some of us, the more modern approaches are a bit harder to take on after decades of doing things 'old school'. I have learned something and thank you for your expert coaching. Cheers from Sydney – Dave

  5. His setup intrigues me. I notice his right elbow from the camera angle seems to be pointing out back towards the camera. I've been doing the hogan way and trying to point my elbows at my abdominal but this has me considering trying out the other way to see what it feels like.
