This coming April. It’s the 2024 invited celebrity Classic outside Irving Texas, Los Colinas Country Club. It’s the PGA Tour Champions event. All three rounds will be televised live on the golf channel. And it’s going to have a whole bunch of celebrities, john Small Albert, Joe Carter, Tim Brown, Reggie Bush.

Vin Sanity will also be there and also expected to be there in April in Las Colinas will be hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux who joins us. Now, here on MLB tonight, Greg, what kind of nerves do you get at playing in these type of events? And how do they compare with

Whatever you experience during your playing days? I get lots of them probably lots more than I did when I was playing. Uh, the difference is I understood what I was doing on the mound when you’re on the golf course and things start going, you know, a little south.

It is, it, it’s a lot harder to uh get back on track. So, uh uh but I’ll have fun. It’ll be good seeing all the guys down there and uh you know , it’s like fantasy golf. It’s a chance for us to go out there and play with the guys

That we watched in the clubhouse , you know, every week during the nineties. And, uh, it, it’ll bring back a lot of great memories. Hey, greg, it’s Dan Las Colinas in Texas. It can get windy. You’re gonna work on your ball flight before the tournament that I don’t know what I’m gonna

Work on. That’s the problem, you know, but I’m gonna go and have fun, you know, golf’s fun. Uh, you know, whether you’re in Cabo playing golf in the wind there or in Texas, it’s always fun. So I’m looking forward to it and , uh, uh, looking forward to playing with the celebrities and

Absolutely, the pros, Greg, it’s alex. I was wondering if, you know who you’re, who you’re paired up with, speaking of the pros. Oh, I don’t, I don’t, we’ll, we’ll find that out when we get there. Usually they post them the night before. And, uh, uh, you know, I’ve

Never played with a bad one yet , so they’re all good guys and I’m looking forward to watch them actually compete. You know, it’s pretty fun being able to stand that close. You know, you don’t have that opportunity on the mound to, to , you know, stand 10 ft away

From somebody when they’re pitching. But, uh, you know, on the golf course it’s a lot different and , uh, a lot of respect for what these guys can do with their golf ball. Well, if, uh, if people would like to attend, they can go to invited celebrity classic.com.

Tickets are free for that event. April 15th to the 21st at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. All right, Greg, let’s transition to baseball a little bit. Uh, who are some current pitchers that you enjoy watching? You know, when you, when you read or if you stumble the wrong

, when you’re, when you’re flipping the remote and you happen to see, oh, hey, so, and so is on the mound who, who’s a guy that you like to, uh, sit and watch, uh, you know, Garrett Cole Verlander, uh Eovaldi, uh, you know, I spent a little time with the Rangers last year.

So all their guys, you know, it seemed like if I had a game on last year, it was always the Rangers and, uh, uh, you know, not obsessed with baseball like I used to be II I watch it now with the sound off and, uh, uh, just enjoy watching the guys.

I mean, they’re so much better these days, you know, they, they throw a lot harder, they got bigger breaking balls and, uh, you know, it’s just watch it. It’s impressive to watch these guys. What, what they can make a baseball do. Hey, greg, you and I had a

Chance to play golf in Cabo last year and we talked a little about pitching that pitch that you brought in that comeback or that you started at a lefty sip and brought it back in. Was that a tough pitch for you to learn how to throw? Uh Not once I understood how to

Throw it, I think once, you know , once you understand how to throw it and what you have to do mechanically and how to, you know, align your body for that. It’s, uh, you know, you practice it and it becomes pretty easy after a while, greg, I often Dan’s question on that comeback

Because I mean, obviously throughout your career, I mean, one of the things you were known for is your command and something over the course of my career work, you know, working with guys that had great stuff but struggled command. You know, one thing they, they never picked me up like early enough.

A lot of times, like sometimes you see a guy looking towards third or looking down when his legs coming up and Then he’s picking me up when he’s releasing the ball and Then, you know, I’d let him know, why don’t you just pick me up a little bit earlier and Then

While out there, they have a little better command. I was, I’m curious with that pitch in particular. Was there something that you would focus on whether it was on the hitter or the catcher to help you with the command? Uh Absolutely. Like you said, you got to pick it up early.

I think all your pitches, you have to pick it up early. I think this, uh, and you have to leave your eyes on the target. You know, I think a lot of guys are guilty of watching the ball fly in. Uh, don’t watch the ball. You have to keep your eyes

Locked in on the glove and, uh, wait for the ball to hit it, Greg. It’s d again, we, we’re in an age now where guys are chasing vilo and chasing spin. Do you think that you can still win consistently? 88 to 92 miles an hour moving

The ball up down and in and out like you did 100% 100% you know , vilo and spin are great, but it’s all about execution, you know, uh uh movement location, the ability to change speeds probably Then velocity. So, uh you know, we all learn how to pitch a little bit different.

And uh you know, my four things were movement, location, change of speeds and Then velocity. And I think now it’s all about how big can I make it break or how hard can I throw it? You know, they kind of forget about the execution part at times. And uh you know, I understand

You don’t want to sacrifice stuff for location, but you got to be able to locate all, all the guys winning today are the ones that are locating the most. You know, I know it’s impressive with their spin rates and their vilo and all that. But if, if, if, if you watch the

Games today, the guys that execute the most pitches are still the guys winning. You know, you look at deGrom pitch, I mean, he’s 98 with command and a good slider and a good changeup. I mean, when he’s out there and he’s, and he’s healthy, there’s nobody better. Well, greg, we appreciate the

Time and uh good luck at the event there in Las Colinas this coming April and hit him straight. We appreciate the time. Appreciate it. Looking forward to it. You got it.

  1. Use to always watch him pitch with the old man. Getting old is one of the best and worst things that can happen to you

  2. What a great interview with my favorite pitcher! Thanks Greg! Boy April will be a busy month for you with your birthday, your son Chases birthday, the golf tournament and the birth of your grandson! Congratulations! I can't help but wonder to myself, will your appearance at the tournament be subject to change should your grandson arrive that week?
