Something that Albert wrote about in the mmqb caught my eye what do you got he says that uh an unnamed executive says that JJ McCarthy is quote unquote way off from the top three quarterbacks in this year’s draft and um talking about how they were surprised by his

Size yeah I’ve heard a little bit about that doesn’t weigh very much one veteran exec told me in the fall that he was taken aback by how narrow and lanky the Wolverine’s quarterback was calling him a stretched out Bryce young Breer wrote whoa

Okay I I I just I just want to say this it’s unfair what I’m about to say but I’m gonna say it anyway have we ever heard about a quarterback coming into the league leag off of a stellar season not a championship season but a stellar season for his

School and he got drafted all the way in the sixth round because everybody thought he couldn’t do it you’re right that’s not fair what you’re doing I know I know but you compare players just because of the school that they go to you know I I I don’t care how ly he

Was there wasn’t a single time I was sitting there watching that team over the last two years talking about how stretched out and lanky he is and I understand the pros are totally different than college but I would just um tell anybody out there that you uh pass on this guy at your

Apparel the Denver Broncos are meeting with him tonight according to George pton the general manager of the Broncos wise move wise move I think that would be an outstanding fit will he drop to 12 should the Broncos trade up to go get him when you meet

Him and we’ve only met over Zoom I look forward to shaking his hand I might linger in the handshake heads up might be one of those awkward ones he’ll attempt to let go first I’m sure sure but um I I I I I’ve just have you know communicated with him for two years

And um you pass at your peril and when you meet him you get impressed that’s it and it sure looks like the Broncos are in the market for a new quarterback and we’ll get to that in hour number three cuz Shawn pton spoke today Al there’s six months before next season he

Could easily put on 15 pounds is exactly again 215 220 the dynasty whatever the dynasty documentary I’d never seen the moving pictures of Brady at the combine with the you’ve only seen the shirt off photographs it’s it’s film like they had they got the footage of that and him running at the

Combine and him running the three cones looking like what what they say is a bab like a baby deer with his limbs flying all over place just born and I can’t really walk but Brady had the size Brady’s never had his size question’s a big guy 65 yeah big guy never had the

Size question so but we we do realize that going to the same college is not guarantee you oh no no no but but but I’m just saying no no I’m saying that Michigan is not known as a quarterback school yeah that’s true yeah even with Tom Brady having seven rings because

Brady there had to deal with Drew Henson which is another part about this documentary it’s just like what that Brady what Brady had to overcome to get the opportunity to become Tom the the Tom Brady that we all know is truly an unbelievable Journey but you didn’t think of him as a

Great quarterback until that 2007 season I what you didn’t think of him as a great quarterback until 2007 even after he won three four I would say New England fans were like this is the guy but I think nationally it was just kind of like well he’s got a great defense he

Doesn’t really throw a lot he’s never had more than like 20 touchdowns like is the you know he’s kind of getting carried by brusi and mcginness and will I guess as evid by the fact that Deon Branch got the MVP in that Super Bowl

Not not the guy who threw it to him in the same way that Ben didn’t get it Santonio Holmes got it because there was a lack of respect for Ben although for different reasons then 2007 hits and it’s just I mean they scored 38 points the first three games of the Season

You’re like what what is this team 50 touchdowns and now you’re like oh he’s one of the greatest now because also Chris it took a long time for the majority of the people to put him above pton pton held on to that quote unquote number one guy spot for a long long

Without winning for a long I don’t know if it was people just didn’t want to give it to BR I’m I’m just telling you the kid is the national championship quarterback for a reason it’s not and it’s not because of you know obviously the team was great defensively great offensive line great running

Game is what got him through Penn State I think he was hurt in that game I’ll just say you’re overlooking him at your peril and just leave it at that catch the rich eyes and show every single day on the Roku Channel 12 to3 Eastern for free

  1. Rich and crew do their thing… knocking down the door to get the most out of every interview… good stuff.

  2. NEWS FLASH!
J.J. McCarthy will never be an NFL franchise QB and will be lucky to even be a back up or a 3rd string QB. He is average to below average at every aspect of playing QB. He can't make the throws needed to be an NFL starting QB. He is not a fast decision maker either. Any NFL team drafting him before the 5th round or later are idiots.

  3. JJ is one of the toughest QB's to evaluate in this class because Michigan asked so little of him. It's hard to know what to think of a QB when in the natty they run it on 1st and 2nd down, then ask JJ to bail them out. Sometimes he does, but sometimes he looks like they never let him get into a groove.

  4. I don't know what everyone else saw in Tom Brady, but as an Ohio State fan I always wanted to know how Michigan was doing and they were losing late in a game so I turned on the Michigan game to watch them lose and this QB named Tom Brady brought them back to win. So I did this a couple more times and both times I tuned in to see Michigan lose yet Tom Brady brought them back to win. So after that, I started watching Michigan games to see if he could keep doing it all year wining games late in the 4th quarter which he did and back then all I could think of saying was "who does this kid think he is, Joe Montana?" Now, I never thought he would win 7 Super Bowls but I thought NFL scouts would be drooling over Tom Brady. The fact that my Steelers drafted Tee Martin and we could've drafted Tom Brady multiple times boggles my mind and my Steelers and every other team in the NFL paid dearly for that. All I know is that when I watched Michigan with Tom Brady back then and the last couple of years with J.J. McCarthy, I saw winners and I thought that's what the NFL is all about.

  5. It's funny to hear the size issue when McCarthy is two inches taller and 12 pounds lighter than Caleb Williams. Which will matter more 12 pounds or two inches?

  6. As a prospect, he is 100% way off from Williams, Maye and Daniels.

That’s not to say that those three will be studs and he will be a bust.

He could end up being a damn good QB, even a great QB.

I personally don’t know enough about McCarthy to say if I want him on my team (GIANTS), but I am going to follow him closely.

  7. He is young so yeah he could put on weight and muscle pretty easily. However if I am an NFL exec I am taking him only if I have an older QB rather than risking it all on a young kid who has mostly not been expected to carry the team on his shoulders with a bad line and no offense… But that is just me.

  8. i would argue that Michigan WAS a quarterback school under carr and moeller…..brady was part of it. Gerbac (8 years), Griese (11 years), Henne (13 years), Brady (22 years), Navarre, (only 3 years), Collins (11 years)…..am i missing anyone?

  9. Here is the best advice:
If you draft him make sure you cheat and steal the signs of your opponents, thats the only way this kid will win in the NFL.

  10. I wonder if JJ cares about what position he gets drafted. I just hope he gets drafted by a good organization that's a good fit for him.

  11. For all the hype and hoopla about this year’s QB class; McCarthy and Penix are the ones who will have the most success. (And that even allows for Penix being wrong-handed).

  12. I'm a retired scout and I'm just going to say it. Write it down… This kid won 3 Big ten championships and a national championship. The same idiots that take shots at JJ, passed on Mahomes… He WILL prove to be the not only the most NFL ready (developed by Harbaugh) but the best QB in this draft. I digress..

  13. Who cares. It doesn't matter how high he goes (except for his rookie check) — he will need to beat out the competition and get the starting job which is true for anybody. Draft position means nothings — there have been plenty of #1 busts, and HOF low rounders. Just work hard and good luck.

  14. Draft J.J. before 199 at your peril! Got to love scouting helmets and negative scouting reports. Brady at 199 worked superbly. J.J. at …pick a #… may or not work as fine. But Brady and that gawd awful Michigan helmet will play no part.

  15. This is how you you set up a player to fail. The kid is receiving some mild criticism? Say no mo', I'm going to compare him to Tom Brady.

  16. Scouts and gms that say that don’t know how to develop a young player. Let him sit bulk up learn the nfl way, idk I’d say he needs a yr to develop but he’s got the tools to be good.

  17. Not a quarterback school? What about Brady, Griese, Henne, Henson, Harbough, Navarre, Timberlake, Staton , etc 23 in total not bad. Only LSU had more: 25

  18. Remember in 2017…..the 2nd pick was Mitch Trubisky. Take a wild guess of who was the 10th pick. Hint…he's the kid at KC.

  19. Though the Brady comparison is wild, being lanky is not a big deal. He has the height which what really matters, since you can’t control it. putting on weight shouldn’t be a big problem with the right people helping him.

  20. My idea that is the best for JJ, and for a divisional rival of my team. Minnesota Vikings should re-sign Cousins to a 2 year, $70million contract, fully guarantee it, and take JJ, trade up if necessary. Give JJ a couple years to bulk up, get used to the speed of the game, give him a long on-ramp.

Give JJ a couple years to bulk up, get used to the speed of the game, give him a long on-ramp.

  22. I think that teams overlook what the guy does for the locker room. Look at his freshman year. Playing behind a quarterback who was less talented and also not a great teammate too him by some accounts. But JJ stays posotive and lifts his team up.

  23. JJ is 6’3” 195 lbs and Jayden Daniels is 6’4” 205 lbs….scale factor wise they’re the same size lol. Yet, no one is scared off by Jayden’s Lankyness, so this nitpick doesn’t make any sense.

  24. does Rich seriously think there's a single NFL GM out there who was waiting on his advice to draft JJ???

  25. LOL JJ's stats are a joke. Six times this season, including most of the back end of the season, he failed to pass 150 yards through the air. You could've put damn near anyone behind that offensive line and succeeded.

  26. Even though McCarthy played pretty well the last two seasons, I think he needs a redshirt year at the NFL level before he will be ready to go

  27. As a Falcon’s fan, I agree with you, Rich. I’d take JJ at 8 if I was our GM, especially if he wows in the white board at the Combine.

  28. I don't see the appeal of JJ McCarthy to any team in the first round. This guy played with a coach who knows how to develop a guy for the NFL, & yet he barely used him. He was content to run the ball at Michigan. McCarthy has never had to be "the guy", so we don't have any idea if he can be that in the NFL. We don't need to bring Brady into this discussion simply because he went to Michigan & was also skinny. As for the other first round guys…I'm not convinced this draft is nearly as good at that position as people think. In fact, there are issues with all these guys. Sean Payton thinks so too. There' s a video in which he hints that he things maybe 2 of the 6 guys considered possible first round picks will make it in the NFL.
