It’s interesting it’s like you know you got to prepare with board choice and test boards for what you think you might be on in the next couple of days and then kind of check out all your landmarks for where where you are in the lineup and if there’s ever somewhere
That’s tricky at Sunset there’s like 100 different landmarks and um um yeah and then just kind of getting the feel and a lot of people like just the routine of getting out there and going through the motions and and everyone has their own individual approach to to what a warmup

Best Surfers in the world are here they want to surf with them so it gets even more cred and it’s understandable too like it’s you know you can see both sides like it’s amazing for groms or even the local older crew who live here it’s a spot so like it’s kind of totally
Fair game but it’s like just from the competitor’s point and then the coach’s Point like that’s that’s definitely a topic you got to talk about because it’s like that’s part of the deal of like you don’t just turn up and get given all the waves you want you got to kind of you
Got to work with it and embrace the crowd and just find your moments you’ll have random servce where you like just Jag it luckily and get a little window with not many people and then you you can go to the other way too where you can paddle out and there’s three people
When you get here and then there’s 60 people you kind there’s nothing you can do about that you can’t go we come back in 2 hours of be know out come back in two hours there another crew so it’s kind of you just got to work with it it’s actually interesting though too
It’s like one like thing you get in surfing that you get in no other spot like being able to warm up with your heroes or share the exact same moment with your Heroes like you could really I’ve seen Mick out DEA and some people don’t care if he drops in on them cuz
They just so happy that they shared the same wave together with their hero so there’s definitely there’s so many waves to um so many ways to look at it this guy was waiting for a wave for so long and he nearly got it damn is that simpo yeah oh simpo wow

Was Hing get in there amongst it and find those opportunities and and then take on that bowl section I think that was where most of the big scores came from from the big big close out sections and you know over the whole day there was only a few kind of big clean long
Three or fullterm waves and like Jake Marshall’s wave was unbelievable it’s like it’s like how he found that in the in that Rogue ocean like that’s about as as wild as the channels been for for cading it was just like straight close outs kind of constantly and so yeah when
You pitch yourself you got to get out there and find find your wives it was it was a battle for the boys it was like that diamond in the rough cliche that moment when seeing Jake take off on that wall and then it just kept going and it
Wasn’t just a one- turn section it was just an absolute freight train and he it so well uh you could tell Jake’s got something really cool out here with Sunset Beach 100% oh K and K M that was sick wow who’s this kid he’s kayen Francis from o
Oh that was cool he’s um so he’s kind of traveling and working with Tommy wits oh cool so it’s like that same kind of program of you know we all do it as coaches you try and Tow along some of the groms and um yeah where you can go
Like and it’s really cool and welcoming of the the world tour athletes that you know that I work with or Tommy or dog or snake like whoever they kind of they welcome in the groms and know that that’s what they got when they were young so yeah like Kaden’s hanging with
Tommy and and his crew and just kind of sitting and watching and observing and getting some waves amongst amongst the crew what a cool opportunity here’s Sawyer her brother Taj is out there she’s going to bring some new spice to the tour I reckon she’s like Tatiana Young
Blood wow yeah she got she what she said was her first barrelet back door in her heat and when a competitor says that you know they can just read waves really well on the Fly you know not having too many sessions out there that was really
Cool to see her just grab the rail back end and get a really really nice Barrel to start the year she’s been working a bit with Miles padaka and Shand Dorian so that’s really cool what a great balance some great coaches miles went out here back in
2001 I think he was one of those stories where he came from the trials like they used have these trials events and he won the trials got into the main event you’re taking on the best Surfers in the world on tour and you win the whole thing it’s like that’s cool no better
Way to become a local hero you know that’s crazy has he always lived out the road here yeah yeah he’s been just kind of a part of the furniture around here yeah totally really well respected on all islands and his Sun rips I see him at
His son down down the beach a lot ripping yeah unreal here we go yeah that story of um of soya is like a good example of what your Cadence and and those young Portuguese kids have like whoa that’s sick um just that kind of process of getting amongst these
Lineups and like pping back door and Sunset and Bells like all places that you kind of got to go out of your way to get to to to put the hours in and if you get those opportunities through taging along with the crew it’s pretty important it just remind me of like
World Tour Talent like EO he’ never been to any of these locations when he qualified that wave he got at the Box he’ never been out there before and he like locks into an eight that’s a different breed like mentally and your ability as a surfer to you’ve never done
It before and you’re competing at the highest level and you get excellent scores I mean that’s just beyond rare for sure I think that’s probably one thing that I always it stands out to me when when friends or just like people you chat to that haven’t seen professional Surfing live
Before like they they appreciate things like that where they’re like all right this they just turned up they’ve never seen this reef and they paddle out and they find their way out through the keyhole just naturally find their way out and then they’re all of a sudden just doing surfing that’s just like

On the fly elelo has been talking about how he doesn’t really like riding big boards you know he just never had to do it in his whole life so he’s like learning a new approach while he’s on tour this year I enjoyed him on a 72 out
That pipe on that big day and and even the board he was riding yesterday it was one of the biggest boards I’ve ever seen him on but he was able to navigate it into that tube where he got the seven for sure when you’re skilled as like an
Ido you you can make anything work like it’s that’s what these World Tour servers have they have the ability to Rite anything and I think Ito on the bigger boards is probably a bit of a Ros effect like he’s working with Ros and he’s Ros is obviously old school and and
Can appreciate the value of a bigger board in in big conditions so yeah you can see that Ros impact has has been positive it’s a theme this year everyone’s riding bigger boards huh it’s funny it’s a theme this year but it’s been around forever like it’s I think
Everyone kind of like John’s been doing what John does in at Rock piles and whatever for for the last for years on shorter boards and everyone kind of got a little bit a little bit um kind of hooked on what he was doing wow that was so
Sick um but yeah then like I think everyone’s kind of got to appre apprciate their own their own ways of doing things just got a message from Ross Williams he said wow it’s really crowded do you mind clearing the lineup going to paddle out in about 30 minutes
With a couple extra boards for Betty Lou and and tati so okay sure yeah no wores anything for Ross go Ross is a classic but uh it’s been ripping like you said too geez I think uh that’s what he loves about coaching like you probably do as well is H just you guys
Have one thing in common that you love surfing so much you know of competing at the highest level and then kind of being this close to it as well to inspire your own surfing it’s pretty awesome for sure yeah we we live and breathe this like
It’s you know like yourself Joy like we all just love surfing and then the the judges they travel with surfboards they on a lay day they’re out there surfing too and and then the you know all the commentators all the staff like we’re basically traveling circus of surf

Waves have always been on tour as far as they’ve known right so there always been in their wheelhouse to go and surf these waves I have a sneaky suspicion Steph’s taking this year off she’s going to go get better of backhand tube riding she’s going to go spend some days in Fiji some
Cloudbreak days she’s going to come back next year hungrier than ever and she’s going to have this tube riding especially on a backand fully down and more competitive than ever Jojo well sometimes you got to burn them I guess when you’re when you’re warming up

Been a really fun uh time watching the free surf here at Sunset a lot of the CT Surfers in the water I’m still honestly recovering from how epic the competition was yesterday how much the men just like showed up showed out on a big Sunset day
That was a lot of fun to watch uh John John Florence flick was one of the ones that wasn’t a surprise but was always a delight to watch here at Sunset Ryan kalinin so we’re all the way through to the quarters on the men’s side and the
Women haven’t even the gun yet and we’re waiting the women hopefully going to get underway tomorrow speaking of women there goes one right now Isabella Nichol there she is Bella on the pink board oh nice little off the lip little um okay I’ve got a question no I got a
Question for you oh wow I got a question for you we just saw Isabelle and Nichols with a long Jane on the merits of a long Jane and exp explanation what a long Jane is uh long Jane is the no arms long legs the no arm long leg wet suit right
And what’s the benefits of that flick well uh lots of movement and what’s flexibility in the arm region obviously your shoulders uh got a lot more room for movement but you still get that little bit of warmth with that’s an interesting wet suit we’ve got the third
Cut off down to the lake triath suits um but yes back to the long Jane you got obviously a little bit of coverage it’s probably about 1 or 2 mil thick get the coverage on the legs but then you get the flexibility around the shoulders so pretty good wet suit but uh
My personal favorite wet suit ever to surf in is the short arm can’t go past a short arm in Western Australia it’s a really good W full suit short um question so what got another question related to that question oh go ahead go ahead I like when you ask questions go
Ahead uh question KS yeah what is your thoughts on sprays on surfboards and does it make a turn look more critical and is there certain sprays that work better than others and certain colors that work better than others I’m going to tell you sometimes sometimes there is
The airbrush Jinx when you take too much time on your surfboard and the Beautiful Arts put on the surfboard and you want that surfboard to work cuz it’s so so beautiful but almost sometimes you can jinx it m I’m also a fan of the after glass spray in which you take matters
Into your own hands after the board’s glass you get the rattle can spray paint and you just get busy on your own board yes with that being said talking about sprays I do want to talk about a a man in Surf history Gavin hasawa he is a airbrusher here you see
The sprays on a lot of the Town and Country boards here he is the inventor of the Martin Potter spray ah yes so all those classic pots boards that’s Gavin haawa yeah that’s a really really like trademark spray obviously okay here’s the next question coming in on Instagram
What about colored wet suits C or core oh colored wet suits are core anything colored I like anything colored I think color adds a bit more personality um and I’m all for it I’m all for the expression you know anything a little bit different and another different way to express yourself let’s
Go or you know what’s pretty trendy the all white surfboard and the all white wet suit how do people even keep those is impressive how do you keep it clean how do you even keep it clean like Slater like we’ seen them in all white fi VTE we’ve seen Stephan all white
Before how do you just keep those things clean Chuck them in the washing machine you heard it here first that will void your manufacturer’s warrantee by the way on your wet suit okay I’m going to tell tell you folks you make if you do Chuck them in the washing machine that will

As we all envision new things and surfing I don’t think any sport changes as much as surfing does and is a much of an open book you know to like think of new ideas to crowning world champions so I think with that that end event you

About it earlier people are more willing to ride bigger boards I think this year I mean it used to be a story we’d show up with pots and he’d be like why is everyone on these short boards because in his era everyone rode bigger boards
At Sunset and even at pipe so I think there’s a trend of everyone going no we don’t need that much we can go shorter and shorter now it’s actually opening it up for these guys to to be on like a 68 you know on a day they probably would
Have rode like a 62 a couple years ago like I like the way thato looked on that bigger board yeah I mean he was just smashing he got really barreled on it too God that was gnarly yeah it was important wave too he would have he
Would have lost if he didn’t get that tube that was awesome the way I look at the schedule on tour is you’ve got your regular season then you’re going into the playoffs and then you got the finals oh yeah so I it’s a lot like other sports yeah this sort of that regular

What that did um yeah mine’s is uh we get them over here sometimes and and they we get spinner dolphins have you ever seen spinner dolphins there’s these little dolphins and they jump in the air and they spin around and they land back and they come they they travel in like
Giant pods and stuff it’s pretty cool actually talking about dolphins I had a a pretty cool experience once before um we were in a heat at the Box me and Connor coffin and remember that iconic wave that he got with the dolphins that was actually on my heat he smoked me um
But it was very cool like I was actually we were both in the lineup and the start the set start to approach and we see the dolphins coming on our right and we’re like wait is this just going to start to happen right now and the Dolphins are
Going to go in the wave and the wave was proper as you see I mean I’m sure everyone have seen that wave and he ended up getting almost an eight-point ride he took off and the Dolphins were going in between us as he was paddling
It was kind of crazy it was pretty cool and they’re not small animals they’re definitely not small they’re pretty fast and not to mention we’re at the box it was already intense enough and ride a barrel with the Dophin that was pretty crazy so looking at more of your

All in the range of 10 years and he has the same stats or even better in a period of 30 years so that’s crazy for me to think like it’s hard enough for you to be consistent throughout five years and he’s been doing for 30 it’s just out of this

Obviously he’s taking this year off so I mean that opens up the door for maybe maybe John let’s just throw John in there obviously he’s on a tear and on his way to maybe taking that yellow Jersey after Sunset and he was one of the ones that when we talk about posst
Heat interviews the energy that he’s bringing to them this year just feels um loose and more confident like he seems like he’s in a really good spot both professionally personally everything and he has been so fun to watch through the first two events he is absolutely someone that has to be considered for
That final five oh without a shadow of a doubt he looks like he’s uh just coming into the year with like a full new sort of mindset he’s reinvigorated he seems injury free which is awesome obviously the last couple of years he had a few niggling injuries and it’s just exciting
To see him back and um at his best at his full potential yeah it’s really fun um can we get a commentary team heat that would be fun we should do that um Noah I also agree that Lakey’s underrated she’s somebody that I talked to ahead of the Season as well and um
She’s another one of the women who’s just coming in reinvigorated and like the reality is that women’s side of the draw is wide open and I could see anybody from the younger generation of Katie and Molly just absolutely having their moment but I also would not count
Out ly Peterson I would not count out Tyler I would not count out Tachi like I would not count out some of the women who’ve been on tour for a little bit longer because there’s been a lot of waiting for this moment oh for sure and
I sort of open yeah I think this year when you look at that women the women’s side of the tour I just think that yellow Jersey is just going to be thrown around everywhere I was speaking about it earlier when I was well when we were

And Molly at pipe was one for the history books that honestly brought tears to my eyes at even calling that I feel like that had been a long long time coming and there were a lot of women before those two ladies that obviously you know made that possible and sort of
Um yeah paved the way but I just couldn’t believe it you know those girls were just going blow for blow and um you know I just feel like they were empowering each other to just go harder and go bigger and um just watching those two waves that they got back to back you
Know Molly I think it was Molly’s 10 and then Betty’s ninepoint ride that was just super inspiring and um I’m really excited for pipe next year or even Tahiti you know it’s that NE another barreling wave onto fij yeah that moment in the semi-finals it was like that was kind of one of
Those I feel like for for a long time right you talk about about the Michelle ballards the Megan abbos the kiala caneles like these women have been just punching the glass ceiling in women’s surfing and that was the moment oh sorry is that Tachi yeah Tachi is very active
Out there this morning is ready um but I feel like that finals day at pipe was like the moment the ceiling shattered you know like everyone had been putting cracks in it for years and then that was the day it came crumbling down yeah yeah couldn’t agree with you more is that

Um when did I start surfing uh I was like three years old there’s actually a very fun picture that my mom pulled out when I first got this job of my dad putting me on a board when I was like two or three years old it’s on my
Instagram somewhere but um yeah I’ve been surfing my whole life I grew up in San Diego and uh surfed all through high school college college and then I knew that I wanted to go into sports broadcasting so I ended up moving to Arkansas for a few years to cover Sports
There the SEC and then I went to Oregon covered the NBA and uh finally got a chance to get back to my first love of Surfing and Olympic sports and so been surfing my whole life but have uh gotten much better in the last year with this [Laughter]
Job oh Lisa Anderson oh Lane beachley yeah yeah OG’s OG ladies and they’re just such like wonderful women still right they still come around for like the Women’s Dinner that we had and Lan was at finals last I mean it’s just so fun such uh when is the best time to start

And anything more extra because obviously um I love a bit of color love a bit of Pop I actually think when I watch people it’s some sprays I feel like detract from surfing on a wave and some really give so some people I really at the moment I’m really vibing uh Jack
Robinson spray his sort of signature spray that he’s got going on his sharp eyes I feel like that contrasts really well on the way it’s just the right amount of color on the rails but not too much where it’s just a big block color and sometimes depends on what block
Color you choose but I feel like that block color can sometimes look heavy although when you’re choosing block Colors Let’s Just Pretend We’re Not surfing in a competition but if we’re going for the hero cover shot sure I feel like on a really big wave it’s always nice to have that like
Contrasting pop of yellow or pink or red because contrasting as the blue get the cover shot but I think when you’re surfing in a heat and if we’re talking about scoring I think some sprays that really give and some that don’t yeah um I have surfed the east coast of
The US I got to Surf out in the Outer Banks last summer that was a lot of fun um shout out to the guys at the 17th Street Surf Shop out in um yeah the Outer Banks of North Carolina it was so much fun there was a little hurricane
Swell I found some little barrels it’s quite cute um who has the most boards on tour I don’t know oh wow I mean a these oh Tachi again on another wave she is absolutely shredding this morning yeah staying so active that board’s looking so good under her feet I think she’s the
Surfer that’s caught the most waves this morning every time I look up there’s touch issues again on another wave very active in the lineup definitely got surface that go out and free surfs and some Surfers just have that wave magnet ability and the waves come to them or
They’ve got to they’ve got the lineup figured out but she was in my pick at the beginning of the year before uh the tour started and just think reflecting on last year she was sort of in that conversation for me for that final five so yeah as she should be my goodness
That’s what’s so fun about the beginning of the year is there’s still so many uh possibilities you know I just I think everyone still sees all their dreams of being possible and so it’s it’s just really fun to see them bring so much energy and all of that offseason work
That they’ve been putting in it’s like it starts coming to fruition um I feel like Joanne was out there earlier today too also this is ladies hour right now I think we’re seeing more ladies out there surfing than what we are guys I mean it’s so awesome to see and it’s such a
