My name is Brian Fitzgerald – I’m an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at the Eastwood Golf Club in Kilsyth..

FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don’t feel that old.

Why do you make videos for YouTube? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.

Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.

So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.

What do you film with? – I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I’m using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.

What do you edit with? – About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere – prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio

Do you make money off YouTube? – Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.

I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? – Here’s my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip via : https://ko-fi.com/thegolfdoctor

Thanks for watching!

So do you seem to top your fairway woods and  hybrids a lot? Yeah, there’s a lot of people   like it. And I’ll show you the reasons why  most people do that. So the first reason in

General is they play the ball too far forward  in their stance. So if we think about the golf   swing as a U-shape, or a child on a swing. If we push them and watch them swing. Where

In the swing is that child traveling fastest?  It’s not on the way down to actually hit the   bottom of the swing. So the bottom of our  swing is halfway between our feet. So the   best place to play the ball with any club that  you hit from the grass, not just a fairway wood

Or a hybrid or an iron. But any club from  the grass is the middle of your stance.   So I like to get an alignment stick. You could  use a golf club if you wanted to. And we just

Put that down. And I see a lot of people in  about that position. So with that in mind,   the club is going to bottom out and reach maximum  speed about there. From that point on, it’s on the

Rise. That’s why so many people top it. So the first thing I would check is pop the   stick down, make sure that my feet are  equidistant from the stick. And then   from there, we’re try and hit a golf shot, So. a nice little soft draw, clean contact.

That’s the first thing. So the second reason I see a lot of   people topping fairway woods and hybrids is they  are trying to help get the ball in the air.   So in doing that, they’re sort of staying  back here and hitting upwards. Now,

If we were playing tennis or cricket or any other  sport, you would do that. You pull back to right,   and you would hit up. But if I do that, when I  hit a golf shot, I’m going to top the ball. So

The way I like to think of it is if I’m going to  throw a ball, I’m going to move to my left.   Some people call it transferring the weight,  Some people call it weight shift. It’s pressure,

Whatever it is. As a right handed golfer.  I’m going to move to my left. Now if I can   do that. That’s going to help me make better  contact with the ball. But if I’m moving back   to my right I’m going to strike upwards.  And if I strike upwards on the top it.

So the feeling is when I hit the shot, I want  to make sure that my nose is finishing over   my left foot. So I would just do that in a  few practice swings, And you just get that

Feeling of your nose finishing over your left  foot. So if you can do that. That’s going to   be another thing that’s going to help you  to get that golf ball up in the air.   So my nose has finished over my left foot. I’ve taken just the very top of the grass,

Not a bad shot. So another way of helping you achieve   that sort of downward strike on the golf would  be to just stand on something with your right   foot. So if you feel like you’re standing down  hill slightly with your right foot, it’s going

To be very hard for me to fall back to my right  hand side when my foot is standing up. high.   So you could almost feel like you were  going to hit a little, little pitch shot.

Short and you can feel your getting through the shot better. And this simulates what you need to   feel when you hit the golf shot. So you just get  that foot up and we just feel like we’re hitting

Shots and you’re going to touch the ball with  a slightly descending blow that’s going to also   help you to get that golf ball up in the air. So another little trick I like to use when I’m   helping people get hybrids and fairway  woods is I get a golf tee. And I put the

Golf to about four inches in front of the ball.  something like that, because if I hit upwards,   my ball might hit the tee. But the club won’t hit  the tee, and I really want that club coming down,   hitting the ball, then hitting the tee. If you ask anyone what does the contact feel

Should look like it’s hitting ball then turf. So  this one and the last exercise for that matter,   helps you to hit the ball then turf. So if I just make my objective here   to try and make contact with that golf tee. The tee has

Moved forward. The ball has got in the air. it really will help me get that golf ball up in   the air and stop you from topping it. So there’s  a few ideas that you can work on to help assist

You in getting better fairway woods and better  hybrids. If you want to improve your golf.   I’m going to put to another video just up here. I  know this is going to help improve your golf.

  2. Excellent advice Brian on how to stop topping woods and hybrids. I like your suggestion of playing the ball in the middle of the stance on most shots. Excellent advice for senior golfers! The only exception would be the driver which is played off a tee and forward. Your little "tricks" are perfect for practicing hitting ball then ground. I like the one where the right foot is elevated by standing it on a small platform. Well Done Brian!!! Keep Up The Good Work!!!
