Foundation right and I’m going to show you the easiest tip to improve your chipping around the green there are obviously a lot of variables when it comes to shots around the green and we inside we don’t have sloping lies we don’t have different moisture we don’t really have that many variables so it’s

A perfect time to work on the foundation and there are lots of of your setup which will help control your low Point okay your low Point meaning where we’re striking the ball the angle of attack that we’re coming in from whether it’s too shallow whether it’s too Steep and

The pace of that and this little trick is going to make it much easier I’m also going to give you you something for intention and that intention is going to give you the crisp strikes that you want where you can really gauge the distance and that spin control and of course it’s

Simple I’m not going to talk to you about all the faults with your chipping you know most of them but it can happen with flipping it can happen from Pace it can happen from moving the body too much and it’s all about that low Point control where we’re interacting with the

Turf relative to the the ball relative to the shot we’re hitting but as I said we skip a lot of steps so all I want you to do is practice with your feet completely together your knees completely together what that’s going to do is give the most important setup

Principle that you’re going to be able to repeat you’re going to have a little bit more weight on your front side okay that’s important we want at least 60 70% sort of in the foot so yes you can lift the foot up but you’re not you don’t necessarily stand on it forever but

You’re certainly not tilting back this way so the majority of your weight is in your lead foot but the key we’ve got here is that the ball is in the center of the stance and our setup with the weight more on the left side the left hip a little bit higher up that’s

Another little trick you can do to not dig down too much this way we want the shoulders to be relatively flat or or you know level pretty much they’re just some basics of alignments that we’re kind of talking about but the main thing is this is going to help you calibrate

Your own chipping action and I’m going to give you a little bonus tip for technique in a moment but I just want you to practice calibrating yourself with your feet together the Bold dead center of the stance and just playing some nice little chip shots and what

You’ll find is if you’re not moving correctly you’ll start to kind of maybe fall off balance a little bit or you’ll Chase it a little bit that way it overemphasizes the need for a simple rotation around a central point keeping that head nice and steady steady head

Does not mean that we’re keeping it down steady head means we’re just keeping it in place because chipping if we have a longer distance and we allow ourselves to get through the chest to the Target a little bit okay the head is going to come up it should come up we get in

Trouble when we’re down here remember just allow yourself to move naturally the more natural we can make every action in golf the better we’re going to be we can grab an alignment stick to make sure that we are staying in line and this calibration is going to be so

Beneficial for chip shots pit shots and everything but the more you can practice with that ball in the center of your stance the low point to be in the center of your stance you’re going to be able to make very reliable contact okay do you chip with

Your feet together when you’re out on the golf course you can you certainly can but the same principle applies that if we’re wanting to keep the ball in the center of our stance here it’s got to be an equal distribution to go a little bit wider we don’t really want to go too

Wide because what that causes is a lot of things and it looks a bit messy cuz we’re trying to almost hit a full shot softly so we definitely want it at least for anything up to 30 yards or something I’m not being precise there you’ll you’ll figure it out yourself it it’s

Always going to depend on the length of shot you’re hitting really but narrower is going to be better for the majority of you especially as we’re practicing and you can just make sure that we’re just staying centered we’re staying balanced we’re getting that set up right and

Now we just keep rehearsing that it’s as easy as that that’s the foundation of a solid chipping action here’s a little trick I mentioned an intention that’s going to help your contact and spin control what I want you to do is actually thin your chip shots might seem

A little bit strange but that’s your intention and obviously we don’t want to be thinning it right above the equator here cuz that Ball’s going to go flying across the green we want to thin it just below the Equator so if You’ got a line on the ball here if that’s on the

Equator I want to ensure that I am striking just below that but I’m not trying to get it on the bottom I’m not trying to get the turf first too much it’s about that calibration and having that intention in mind is going to encourage you to figure it out you’ll

Start to learn what that feels like what you have to do as far as sequence as far as movements to catch that ball a little bit cleaner because you’ll start to notice if you dig down how that’s going to feel what does that feel like if I

Get the turf too early what does it feel like if I you know if I thin it too much okay what’s that going to feel like you start creating an awareness but the key is we’re doing it with our feet together and the ball in the center of the stance

To start figuring out the foundation and then hopefully just like goldilux when you kind of figure it out what it feels like you can now thin the ball just below the equator which is going to give you that perfect sweet strike now let me give you that bonus

Tip for technique to get you away from being either too risty when you’re chipping or tilty like using too much shoulders or kind of chasing it with your body this technique is what you would do naturally if I just said to toss a ball under hand just pay

Attention and see if you notice it okay so I’m just going to toss a ball under hand all right I didn’t just do this I didn’t do this it was just a very natural hinge of my trail arm here and very naturally you can see from this

Angle it did actually withdraw behind me I didn’t lift up this way I didn’t go here it retracted my shoulder actually retracted in my elbow hinged a little bit here and this is a very repeatable action because it’s natural but it’s very easy to return back down to the

Strike zone it’s there it’s the most simple movement in the world and I don’t want to make this complicated and get away from the the main lesson of how to control your low Point around here you know allowing our hips to turn for the longer shots but what I want you to do

Is feel that you’re actually from your arm when you’re setting up you’re actually going to feel that you’re pulling your arm back behind you just a little bit almost as if I was saying elbow someone now this is going to lead into some f swing stuff uh at another

Time but this is what happens when you’re not really thinking about it but it’s fine to think about it when we’re just rehearsing our chipping action so it’s going to be from here so I’m elbowing someone behind but my palm is facing up and that’s more or less I mean

It’s exaggerated but that’s more or less where we want to be for a nice little chip or a pitch and now we return that arm back to Center there and then we follow through it’s easy like a very slow smooth piston so it’s going to be a hinge

Here there it’s a very nice little action and the more confidence you get with that you’ll notice that it gets a nice Tempo and a nice sort of pace of shot so there you go get your set up right work on that thinning intention just below the equator and that elbow hinge I

  1. Excellent explanation and demonstration Alex on how to hit consistent chip shots to the green. At one time, I pre-set my wrists and used the right "elbow fold" backswing on this type of shot. It worked really well then and after viewing this video, I'm going to have to revisit this technique. Well Done Alex!!

  3. Always believed one must centre the ball,after many fats and thins decided to move the ball forward to inside of the left foot-a revelation for me,more control and feel with my 64 degree,plus stops dead on the green. Last tip here is almost that.
