Been boring this week the champions league has it just because the games or the draw yeah I think we had a stage now where I used to always feel like that the Champions League kicked in at The Knockout stage it almost feels like it kicks in at the quart the final stage

Now you very rarely get like a really big juicy game I feel sort of in the the last 16 round the teams who win the group normally win them comfortably and more often not the team who finish second in in another group who they get there’s always like you’d almost feel

Like you can predict who the quarters are going to be feels like there’s a big shift between the sort of teams but the W they were a bit dull and and I go back to it I I I think we spoke about this last week I think the away go not being

In honestly I I I think it takes a bit of the excitement away from it I do I think there was the way goal just just made it just could just blow up by one goal and now it just feels a bit I don’t know listen I think it’s

Still for me the best competition out there the champions league but it almost feels you’ve got to get to the quarterfinals you get those heavyweight clashes but next season it’s completely changing is I think that’s probably one of the reasons why because it’s felt a

If you like tiers so they they’re the top tiers and you’ve got the bottom ones so whatever groups will say Manchester City at the top they’ll play someone in who else is in their like a seed so they might play like have Real Madrid in the group then they’ll play two from the

Next group then two and they’ll play two teams at the bottom but what it also does is the teams at the bottom normally they might get one point in the group yeah so they’re actually playing a game against someone at their level MH do you

Know what I mean so right so I I I think it’s quite exciting for the champions league but what happens then it becomes like a league you don’t play home and away as well which is a bit weird so the team like so I think City if City got

Real Madrid they might be away at Madrid but the home somewhere else or whatever but then all the points go as a league and then the top eight I think go straight through to the the next round and then the middle what would be left there come on help me middle middle so

The bottom teams are out if the bottom say eight or 10 or what and then the ones in the middle they’ve got to play do like a playoff all right okay to then go through and I I actually think so you’ll probably get better games in there some poor teams in the Champions

League now is even the group games well I used to always I I think when the Champions League first started the way I look at it was you were involved in it you know you probably rest and players in the Premier League a little bit think we got Champions League midweek I think

It’s the other way now I actually think you see the best teams go we’ll be fine you know we got a big game at the weekend you know you know in the Premier League as well so that’s and and that’s where I think he probably looked at it

And you get probably going to get bigger head-to heads in the so there’s quite a lot of emphasis on the draw them because if you don’t play them home and away that is a big Advantage isn’t it like say but I think there’ll be a way yeah

Yeah but I think there’ll be some they won’t just make it that year the top team so could it be five teams from the Premier League this year that are in I think United got a chance they’ve got a chance yeah no D so the better cities in

The Champions League the more chance United they’ve got to get the fif position oh yeah did you watch the games did you feel it was a little bit I didn’t watch too much of them I’ll be honest with you and I love watching the games but a couple of teams games just

You leave Tottenham to be almost guaranteed you’ve got the league one probably the German cup maybe yeah and it’s just about can you win the champions league and then he’s leaved it and at this moment it’s looking like he’s not going to get his hands on it anything which is unbelievable when you

Go to Munich it’s almost like a they got well beaten the weekend as well in the league didn’t they oh got bed yeah five points now yeah off your new manager champion in that a little bit aren’t you well it’s just the obvious one isn’t it I mean I don’t see

Well it could the only reason I don’t think it could be Alon is if he doesn’t want to come or if he thinks I needs another year at Leverkusen or but if he didn’t win the league in Germany would you have a doubt would you have a little

If they won the league you’re thinking that’s another a big Plus on a CV but you say they slipped up cuz barn and mor C coming back a bit like last year and he slipped up when he didn’t win the league would that change your mindset

Towards him no listen of course if you win the league and I think I said this on Monday Night Football I think the the great managers even if you start with s fuson it’s it’s not great because of what he did at man united it’s almost

Like what he did at AB you go wow Mourinho a Porto klopp at Dortmund all the sort of know pep Stars at the BARC but a lot of the great you know I had we had Rafa he comes to Liverpool wins the champions league but he wins the league

Of Valencia you know so they always have to do something a little bit you know out there that most people can’t do and I I think we’re in the league leverkus have never won the league before yeah I think to win to be the first guy to win

The league there against Munich is pretty special and and as I said I don’t even think it’s just the Liverpool link I think if like there was a coach at Byer Leverkusen doing that and the United job was off for grabs or Liverpool or Arsenal that guy whoever he

Was I think would be be in the Reckoning If he if he’d done that yeah do you think that’s a biggest thing of Judge manager on not necessarily when they get that top job but how they get there like winning the league with Sunderland like something like that yeah that would well

Again especially if you’re up against teams like Bayern Munich yeah yeah of course huge Plus getting over the line I think I think this there probably two different jobs isn’t it you see people do do well under the radar then they get the big job and then people got you know

Games in the Champions League because it was that feeling that one there was either going to be excitement one way or the other lose or they’d win and the game would be exciting yeah but he just can’t watch City and that he felt it was just like it’s almost like they’ve

Ruined it a little bit it’s a bit boring now to be fair it’s a bit I wanted to open that you know bit of a horn its nest I know see the headline now can’t you no because I think to call City boring is to be fair would be wrong

Because to be football the plays out and I actually think the last I actually thought they were boy I found it difficult to watch them but when since Highland’s gone they’re a bit more imperfect I actually like them a lot more with with the four big Defenders

And and Highland up front but is there a bit of a of that now with them is is it a bit of a boredom thing with City yeah because they’re so brilliant though isn’t it know it is I I get where you’re coming from and uh but I I I certainly wouldn’t

Agree when when fans said that about City and they’re very technical and the stats here T night are unbelievable in terms of away from home I know not Copenhagen wouldn’t be that great don’t get me wrong even though they beat United didn’t they but yeah but I I I

Kind of admire that stuff I admire when a team can dominate so much whether it be possession the players their style I I like their style of play but I get it with do you like the style yeah I can I I get I I like it because of the

Brilliance with it yeah listen we we watch a lot of teams who try and kind of do all that stuff and possession and they get nowhere far but they’re topping it off as well with winning and scoring goals and no I I no I I’d give City the

Thumbs up honestly which is hard obviously been that United but I get the argum where people say even Liverpool the last few years Liverpool a bit more emotional a bit Get It Forward quicker but because they’re so Technical and brilliant I admire that it’s just such like an efficient model isn’t it it’s

Like getting in a car and it works every single time it’s like why does something have to go wrong to them make it exciting and everything else and I’m exactly the same like you can see the patterns exactly what they’re trying to do and it only ever breaks down because

Of like a technical action gone wrong or something so to call City boring I I definitely wouldn’t agree with that even as the gamees go on and it’s like it’s 1-1 or it’s nil nil you seen Holland obviously scored from border I’ll change it from boring to have they have they become a

Box now that’s not how going to go whereever and that’s just how good they are and that’s when I go back to sa United was watching your teams hoping you get beat but there always that thing of like you go one or two down and they’re coming back in the games a bit

And you’re on Ed yourself hoping you lose they could win with city they’re just that good in every aspect of the game and and to be honest I don’t think it’s like a city thing and a money thing and they got all the best players I

Think it’s pep I just think pep is that good the detail as well like everyone talks about in possession and I’m not saying any other teams aren’t set up like this because of course you are but there’s so much detail when they’re in possession of how they’re going to be if

They’re suddenly out of possession and I think that’s why they’re so good defensively you’ve got so many players thinking I’m not going to go because I know I’ve got stop the counter and it just all works so efficient and I think like when I was there I was obsessed

With the detail I was obsessed I wanted to sit in more meetings and because it just opens you up to this whole kind of like new way of football but yeah I’ve got I think Phil foren at the minute as well like and to see him have came

Through from like the younger age groups he’s just he’s he one of the best players this season I think I know we were talking about player of the Season w we on a couple of shows previously he sets fire alarms [Laughter] off We R about meetings and but when we

Were doing there was a lot of it was off the cuff stuff yeah obviously good players and do you think the gamees developed though to that or not with basic principles like one one one one uh one fullback goal one stay one Midfield player goal one make sure you’re sitting

You know it was that type one one forward on the last line one forward dropping in the hole it was it was them principles wasn’t it really there wasn’t really a sort of a we have to City for as well so they’re playing Everton who going to city and then they end up

Getting the first goal whatever from a set piece we saw him at the cup recently they’re also really good at set pieces so sometimes you might call A Team a really good possession but I tell you what we can get on them it’s they’re really strong on that side of as well

And that desire to defend and I love the fact when they when they win every week it looks like it’s Pep’s first League win yeah because the first thing what happens when you get successful in life people they drop their guard they lose the eye the Tiger but I don’t see it

With pep considering what he’s won it’s interesting to say about set pieces cuz I was doing the Crystal Palace Chelsea game on Monday night and it came up like the four five worst teams in the league for set pieces for scoring and they were all the teams at the bottom the

Perception was when I felt like we were playing that the teams at the bottom say wimbledon’s Crystal Palace he Stokes they would be the teams that be the best at set pieces and we were the worst and we’d have to obviously stop well obviously they getting more opportunities to get more corers that’s

How it felt did you not with you like the best teams weren’t good at set pieces but they but now the best teams are the best at set pieces when you’re not one of the best teams it’s like we got to rely on our set Paces get goal

Off a set they were spend an hour on the training ground day before but I but I think City are that good I’d be interesting how many teams are even getting Corners against them they’re not even getting that many corners I know you can get wide free kicks but they’re

Not even getting that opportunity to say well going to be really good at set pie well you can be really good on but if you’re not getting any high up the pitch yeah then there going to be no danger to City it is difficult to see who’s going

To stop I feel like they’ve got I I think they’re likely going to win the league but I feel like they’ve got more chance of being sto stopped in the league than they have in the Champions League for some reason this week having watched you know I may all seen a few

Line in a big one but then you go and watch the champions league and I’m watching like Bayern Munich a Hu massive team Arsenal better team AR be Bayern Munich I think Arsenal be Paris sgain so I’m actually looking at the Champions League thinking you could actually stop City and I’m thinking

Probably Arsenal but even if that if they met each other we know City be massive favorites yeah but I actually think Arsenal I’m trying to think is there one more team in there who maybe forgot Inter Milan this top of City I got the final last season

But no there’s not to you just always think sometimes I think that you can’t deny history sometimes in Real Madrid or yeah something like that comes so if like an Arsenal played a real Madrid to be fair out of top side still got a decent team team now psychologically if

The Champions League that could stop Arsenal because they haven’t been there we spoke about sort of Liverpool in the past zo well the Champions because they just they just feel like they belong there but Arsenal I think Arsenal got a decent chance that was a big win wasn’t

Or two before he came in there was there was a big change when he came in and it was quite a jolt at the time because obviously when you sort of haven’t got a technical director like Dan Ashworth but then you have and obviously had a good

Relationship with Roy it he brought Dave readen in who was a performance director as well do you remember Dave read yeah yeah and it was quite a jolt for Roy at the time because they were talking about things like sort of kicking coaches sort of like attacking coaches they were

Talking about attacking set Peach coach almost breaking the game down into it sort of what would be real intimate detail where Roy had worked for 30 40 years in very much a sort of way with coaches on the field with the players working sort of the assistant coaches

And I remember Dan having a conversation with him at the time and I felt it felt to me like obviously Roy was in in the role but they were building all these foundations below and they started with the 21s the 18s I the women’s team yeah

And you think of the success with the 20s the 21s the women’s team that’s happened in the last sort of what would be seven or eight 10 years it all started really from when Dan came now I’m not saying that he was responsible for what happened in the women’s game

Happened saying responsible for what happened in the 21s but he had a big influence within the fa of professionalizing it the fa was a terrible organization from a professionalism point of view and I felt what he did he put He put processes in place and like they’re very structured

And organized yeah and he did a really good job I felt and when obviously then um Gareth came in he almost had like someone that was in his mold yeah that was actually to be fair there’s a thread there between Dave reading so when all the detail came in 2018 with the set

Pieces where they all did the sort of you could tell they’ve been working on it for hours and hours and hours you you’ve been in this coach so you’ll understand this you you meet up in September you do your 10 days then you tend to to be fair not see the players

Then for another month you tend to not go on the training pitch for another month Dave reading wanted things like he wanted them to bring in dummy players to do mock sessions in between for the coaching staff you for the coaching staff so that they worked on stuff so

That when they actually got them in is that including a manager right H yeah yeah he wanted stuff like that to come and he wanted stuff like um extra sessions you know cuz the players come tired don’t they they don’t want to do two three three sessions a day but there

Were at the time there were countries that were doing two or three sessions a day they wanted extra video they wanted so much more cramming into the sort of what was Roy okay with all that no no Roy wasn’t okay with it and I wasn’t

Okay with it at the time but there was an element of them wanting to really extract every last sort of drop of juice out of the orange in that period and be it would be it felt like they were trying to take it to more like a performance like cycling is or like

Swimming is or like athletic and I thought I thought us as the women’s team was getting extra sessions jok but seriously we he wanted all these things to be introduced and I think they had to wait maybe a year or two for it to happen but eventually I

Think they got what they wanted with Steve Cooper with Roy you with um with G there was talented players about coming through yeah of course there was a bit talent but but in the World Cup in 18 I know they got a good draws but actually

They set pieces oh yeah and get to the semi-final no one expected them to get to the semi-final in that tournament so there was an element there of I think the what you’re right there were some talented players coming through but there gives you huge help

You can put all that structure in place fantastic but if you’ve got The Talented players coming through yeah amazing but if the players not coming through all that stuff is so are you expecting a huge shift in the performance of Manchester United then basically the appointment of the guy

From Manchester City yeah but I couldn’t believe Dan I couldn’t believe Dan when he left the Fa went to Brighton I was like that doesn’t seem like a step up then we see what he did with Brighton and then obviously Newcastle is a step up and what he’s done there in terms of

Managing expectations I’m saying that he’s going to go into Manchester United and be successful but if you’ve got the guy in from city which obviously they have now you brought Dan Ash within at least you’ve got people in roles that belong in the last 10 years there haven’t been

People in roles that belong so there’s a start of something look there’s disruption there’s interference with with the the mediocrity that we’ve seen in the last 10 years already if he comes in I do think there’s a chance that you know you’ve got that sort of performance mentality that Excellence mental M ality
