I feel everyone that reviews an affordable set of irons nowadays feels obligated to give it nothing but praise so not to seem well elitist and considering my whole channel is based around good value for money equipment you would presume that I’m going to give this set of irons my unreserved stamp of

Approval but the definition of good value is the amount of money spent versus the quality however putting the negatives to one side for just a moment is there some truth behind Call’s self acclaimed Big Brand iron killer statements and if so what are they so let me give you my

Honest opinion on this £499 for pitching wedge iron set alternating between positives and negatives and mainly for the reason you the viewer have a broad knowledge of money versus equipment versus Tech versus time versus customization to see what option is good value for money for your golf game for example let’s kick

Off with a positive brand new lamin grip can’t get that on a secondhand Club us recoil shaft again quality product that you would find in the Big Brand iron sets out there on the market however something that I noticed rather quickly when I took these out of the box is how

Thin the grip actually felt and when I pulled back the grip to see how many layers of tape was actually underneath it I kind of discovered there wasn’t any now this doesn’t mean the grip’s going to move over time I used to blow on

Grips all the time back in the day as it saves time and it’s a simple fix just put two layers of masking tape underneath there and then do the same process with very little expenditure you would make your product seem quite a lot more premium positive number two these

Things look great in 2024 I’m pretty sure we’ve got a good understanding of what what the golf Market wants however there is a negative but I should note secondhand clubs which obviously I’m going to show you at the end won’t look as good as this in terms of condition so

If you’re wanting to treat yourself and you want something nice shiny in you then you’ve kind of got two options 12200 set or something like this however if I’m also talking about looks I’ve got to talk about quality of control again you can see the 7 iron I bought out in

The light here Nick at the top there and I can’t work out if that’s glue residue but these came straight out the wrapper and with the nine here you can see perfectly stamped or maybe a tiny bit off center but then compared to the five I mean that’s completely worn through

And I’ll talk about how important that little Port is later on in the video but if you compare it to let’s say the g410 or the p790 where either the quality control or materials being used are just a tiny bit better but the bigger question is is this just for pure

Aesthetics or actually does it not make the slightest bit of difference difference meaning the p790 and the g410 are just there for show and gimmicks because as I was researching this set of ir the reviews on them are overwhelmingly positive that being said with quite a bit of digging I was able

To find some unpopular reviews now the vast majority of these reviews were basically about delivery time and communication as well as some others mentioning the grip and potential Nicks on the golf clubs confirming kind of what I’ve just said there however in Ryan’s defense the owner of calal golf

I’ve worked in the golf industry for 10 12 years and I don’t need to tell a lot of you watching this video that golf customer service is average at the best of times and apart from ping which I would say was the best when I worked in

A pro shop every other manufacturer is a nightmare to get hold of get any idea or estimation lead times they don’t call you when stuff’s out of stock and we’re talking about multi-million pound businesses however what seems like a negative netive is somewhat a positive because if you’ve got over 8,000 reviews

On your golf equipment from the general public and the main issue is dpd or DHL not delivering your clubs on time or in the right place well then I guess that’s probably more of a positive but how much weight do those reviews hold which is exactly what we’re going to test now

There’s two reasons why I say that number one we don’t know the level of golfer that’s obviously using this equipment it’s not even level how much is that golfer trying other equipment if you know you don’t want to spend £1,200 on a set of irons then you’re probably

Not going to go and test them number two is that you’re putting a lot of faith into this purchase you haven’t been able to try them you haven’t been able to test them they arrive they obviously look good when you unwrap them and are you sub constantly willing them to be

The purchase that you’re after just so that you don’t feel guilty or stupid about purchasing them in the first place but I have hit a lot of equipment especially the £1200 set of iron r equipment and just like these Cal irons this p770 2020 iron is roughly same amount of money second hand

However you can’t compare this with that like everyone else is at the moment let me explain why at first glance these are exactly the same smaller than the p790 not as offset and obviously got that slick Hollow back feeling now I don’t know if this was a mistake on C’s part

But I feel like they have somewhat cut out a niche compared to every other brand manufacturer that makes this kind of head design 33° with the p770 30° with the 01t and a lot of you might be thinking well they’ve just done that so that their 7

Iron goes further than everyone else’s 7 iron in this category but you see I actually quite like that because there’s a lot of golfers that need the p790 or potentially even bigger but they say to me all the time I hate the look of it I

Hate how offset it is my Miss is actually to the left even though they need the Del lofted and the problem they have is with that less offset and potentially Slimmer looking head they end up stupidly going to something like this at 35 36 34° Loft which just

Doesn’t help their golf game however this might be the only solution out there for that golfer strong lofted irons but not as offset and it kind of looks somewhat similar to this MP5 that I have here there however is a downside considering these are actually aimed for

Low to mid handicap golfers pitch and wedge at 44° and if I was to hit my normal swing with it 147 yards and obviously now means I need another wedge at the bottom there to gap between that and my other wedges so 48° 52° 56° so on and so forth on the

Flip side a four iron lofted at 205° fine for that player that just hit their pitching wedge 140 plus yards cuz they’re going to have enough speed but for the golfer that I just mentioned that wants that strong lofted but Sleek look and less offset whatever it might be that’s a rubbish [Laughter]

Example better at 80 M an hour potentially 85 mil an hour you’re just going to be struggling for carry distance hence why in the future it’d be nice if you can customize this five to pitch and wedge or potentially for that faster player four to gap wedge so you have that

Yardage problem covered before we get into the tech that it’s lacking and it doesn’t have compared to a p770 with Millions R&D I probably should not yes I was able to hit that 4 iron over 200 40 plus yards with very good efficiency launch spin Etc going into the next

Positive and negative if you watch my channel for a while you know that I judge equipment on supply and demand how many drivers are being listed who wants to buy them if there’s loads of Supply people are just getting rid of it don’t like it putting it out the bag if

There’s not that much demand then people aren’t hearing good things about it they don’t see their mates smoking it off the tea or using it around the green therefore they don’t buy it secondhand and to be fair to Cal there’s none of these online and if these were dog awful

And those reviews potentially at the start were just people feeling guilty and they just wanted to say something nice about their £499 set of irons I would like to think there’s at least 10 20 30 in the UK of these Cal irons there doesn’t seem like many people are

Getting rid of them I guess this really isn’t a negative but if you were to get these customized you can only get graphite customized so it’s £50 that’s for the whole set length l grip but graphite doesn’t come standard so it’s £50 plus £50 more for the graphite

Options so these aren’t £499 these are £599 however the reason I say it’s not really a negative is that every manufacturer does that graphite costs more than steel there’s no question about it but if you were to order them customized you can’t then return them that’s why I found it so important to

See sold listings actually Simon was talking a load of rubbish but it does seem like you should be able to get quite a lot of your money back now obviously I can’t compare these for disc but let me show you what you’re missing out on with this compared to this

Interestingly these are both swing weighted to D2 even though the p790 feels heavier the grip feels thicker don’t get me wrong this light feeling might suit someone they might like the small grip they might like how light it feels especially if they miss it out to

The right hand side my point is as soon as I picked this up I felt like it wasn’t premium cuz the grip was too thin and this feels quite light that’s very easily fixed thicken the grip some layers of tape thring way it so it actually feels a tiny bit heavier change

It on your website not many people are going to know what D2 even is anyway the other interesting point is a lot of you were gone for a brand new club fitting for a £1,200 set of irons and how many of the club Fitters actually ask what

Swing weight you prefer giving you other options try clubs with different swing weights I can guarantee you it’s not very many of you going back to this bad boy a lot of people think tungston weights these toe weights are for forgiveness and they’re not they’re 2 G

4 G 6 G weights which ping put one up here and one down here because even the best in the world that manufacture these iron heads come out different they’re 270 G or 268 G or 272 g meaning if you’re trying to make a complete set swing weighted you adjust the grams here

And you adjust the grams here that little hole is for the speed foam from Taylor Made and this hasn’t got speed foam in the face meaning it does sound a bit louder and that’s why when I reviewed Tacomo irons I compared them to the Ping i500 ping don’t put foam in

Their head and when you have a hollow back with nothing in it you’re going to get something that sounds a bit more like versus however I would be lying if I was to say the p770 head in the for which obviously I’ve tried before wasn’t any more forgiving than

This out the toe as you can see quite low efficiency obviously the tungsten waiting in the p79 in the toad to give it that forgiveness feel or the p770 I should say as well is one of the reasons why it’s so popular however you hit this

P770 out the toe even at the 7even iron level maybe not that much out the toe or maybe that proves my point great R&D in manufacturing rubbish efficiency cuz guess what I hid it out the toe and it’s not a massive cavity back head is that every manufacturer

Wants to hide the Forgiveness every golfer wants to play something like this or something like this but we all need probably a bit more of forgiveness like this and we can’t defy the laws of physics bigger head biggeri yes this is better at giving you forgiveness

Especially at that top end of the bag than this but as I’ve shown hitting out the toe or the heel is going to give you a bad shot anyway golf manufacturing has plateaued for a very long time and there’s a big give and take you want

Forgiveness you have to have a big head if you want control low launch spin you have to have a smaller head you want more forgiveness than a DTC iron then go to the 01 not the 01t but as I’ve just shown not many golfers are going to be

Saving shots from tow RS from 170 yards with a four five or six iron no matter what club or how expensive or how much technology is actually in that head which begs the question is C’s self- acclaimed Big Brand iron killer eventually going to become true as as long as manufacturers have this

Conforming golf list Plateau that they can’t go over and well evidently these director consumer iron Brands and Cal are obviously catching up relatively quickly if money is not an option and you go to a very reputable iron fitter this is obviously the best option on the flip side p770 secondhand

£500 downside there’s only so many of them online do you have the right shaft do you have the right length obviously you have to try and test it that’s what my whole Channel’s about buy it take it to the golf course which isn’t a luxury

You get with this or even this brand new test it for a month if you don’t like it or if you’ve had a swing change sell it for 85 90 95% of what you just bought it for the big downside of that is time and then lastly this arguably the quickest

Option out of all of them and if you’re happy with the negatives that I stated out in this video and realistically don’t feel like they’re going to matter to you all that much well then £499 for a set of mind is quite good Val

  1. I've found over the years it's not what manufacturer you buy but who you buy it from. Some Pro shops have more enthusiasm than others at delivering service and dealing with the phone.
Back in 2017 I was after some Footjoys and they didn't have my size. They said they would order them. 3 months later and still no shoes. I said cancel my order. I went to another Pro shop and they didn't have my size. They picked up the phone to Footjoy and they were delivered the following day. Seems the first Pro just couldn't be arsed to provide any service whatsoever. On a pair of shoes costing £129!

  2. Speedfoam isn't anything to do with 'speed'. It's to do with noise, or rather the fact without it they sound like a bean can.

  3. Grooves are reputed to be an issue with Caley, not tried them. And your point on residual value is a real issue, it isn’t just cost, but what they’re worth at resale. I always treat clubs as on hire, so cost is purchase price less resale when a get rid. Ping hold their value, so often the cost for a few months golf is zero or postage, with some clubs, you just waste your money. As i like to tinker for fun, i play the used market and a pal of mine and I have a hoot on the first tee.

  4. I think if your going to play a long time just buy a set that millions of dollars of research has helped you to hit better and last longer and has better resell. Pxg xcor irons are 99 a club custom fit, shaft options, great grip. Hero pricing even cheaper

  5. Try the new RAM FX77 at £299 for 5-pw they are brilliant value for us mid handicappers and a little bit of custom fit as well

  6. I keep looking for a new set. But I can’t justify it. Bought used Adams forged xtds and I could get prettier or longer or easier clubs. But none of those replacements are better enough to justify buying new.

And I could sell my Adams for more now than I paid for them. $200 used when I bought em, probably get like $250 now on eBay.

  7. Hi Simon, were Caley previously called Old Tom? I did some testing on the Old Tom equipment a few years ago and some of the product was poor.

  8. Really good video Simon. Not sure i could buy these without trying them. I don't feel competent enough at golf to get a fitting, so happy to buy secondhand, try and if i dont get on with them sell. Or buy from secondhand retailers who let you try them or money back.

  9. Wasn't a fan of the original caley irons i had. They felt cheap and I couldn't launch rhem at all. To be fair i found the aame with Takomo 101s. Now using a set of wilson d9 forged which are much better. The best way to buy a set of irons is ro get fitted but you have to be prepared to pay for the privilege.

  10. I love the fact ypu do mostly 2nd hand golf clubs but it's also great when you review new stuff as well cos you call it how you see it and then still compare them to 2nd hand stuff for alot less 👍

  11. Simon wpuld love to see your take on Maltby. Another reviewer showcased them and they pretty much blew the other DTC's, and some OEM's out of the water. Lower price point but MUCH better quality and results.

  12. Let's face it..Caley are a beginners / intermediate set and unless you have a consistent repeatable swing then its a good way to start. If you're a serious golfer then you will get fitted for something more suitable as your technique becomes consistent.

  13. Hey Simon, I know youre not the biggest fan of these. But could I have a chance at getting these. I have been playing with a broken Slazenger set for a while and can't afford to get a decent secondhand set. How much would you sell the set for?🙏🙏 P.s. I'm in South Africa, so I would need to ship it😅

  14. Excellent vlog. I have been looking at Takomo and wondering whether I would be better off with a second hand set of p770 or P 790. Currently have cobra f8 for last six years but handicap has come down from 18 to 7. Reluctant to buy something with trying it first.

  15. I am only 2 minutes into this video and already I know that if I said, “Simon, if I have a £500 budget, can you find me a quality set of irons please?”, I know you wouldn’t get me these 😂

  16. I tried them and couldn't get on with them at all, so I returned them and got my money back with no issues.
The service was excellent throughout, and I certainly wouldn't be put off purchasing from them in the future.

  17. I think everyone just wants to use blades because they are just that sexy. GI iorns are looking more and more like blades these day for that reason. Just use blades and practice good ball contact instead of using a bandaid GI club.

  18. New level 902-os forged players distance irons are the best irons I've hit and I've gamed miuras in the past. Pw 43 but I bent the set 2° weak so the little offset that was there is now gone. The build quality is outstanding and the fitting options on the website are first class. Everything about the purchase was first class. The guy that invented the adjustable hosel created this dtc company

  19. I'm on board with your view of favoring 2nd hand equipment. Great way to experiment. I've played with hollow body irons and cavity backs. For me getting the lofts set up to my swing speed for gapping is the most important thing. I was surprised that cavity back irons work a bit better for me in the long irons over hollow bodies because they give me a bit more spin. The 5 iron gets a bit marginal without enough spin and swing speed. After all the experimenting I'm able to settle down and focus on my game.

  20. I have decent speed, but tend to miss right and would love more forgiveness. Is there a more traditional lofted set of irons tghat have more offset and forgiveness or is that combo something that nobody makes?

  21. The inability to try these combined with the loft gapping issues you spoke about, would most likely prevent me from buying these or any similar type. I know that my set 5 iron at 24° is pretty much the limit of my hitting ability. I would have to drop the 4 iron and find something for a gap wedge, which would add to the cost.

You talked about a large head with little offset. Anyone looking for that, I highly recommend the Cleveland Launcher xl's, I have those and have them weakened, which reduces offset even more. Plus there are very affordable brand new if you do some digging.

I will say that these look good though, and it looks like the recoil shaft may actually work for me (I know looking simply at specs is a bad idea)

  22. So much great used stuff out I wouldn't mess with this type of thing then again I play ping eye 2s

  23. Personally wouldn't go near any DTC irons ….thought this for a long time along with all the terrible Kirkland stuff nar the gloves …I don't understand why people spunk 500-600 on the DTC gear …not getting fitted is a sin

  24. Simon….the srixon range of irons 2nd hand are so cheap…why people qpuldnt get into them is beyond me …zx5 zx4 under £500 easy and less

  25. Hey Simon, many thanks for taking the time to review the 01T irons – a very fair and thorough assessment. We will take onboard of your comments to help us improve on our future offering. Many thanks, Ryan

  26. I'm interested to see someone have a review of these irons after using them for a while. I got a caley set about 1.5-2 years ago and have found them to dent and wear pretty badly. Ive got the glue coming off my hosel ferrulles as well, plus the bag has worn pretty badly anywhere its been rubbing after me carrying it or where the clubs have been pulled out plus the badge is falling off.

Im a fairly new golfer though so i dont know how well you should expect clubs to hold up and how common those issues are.

In saying that though, its good to get a full set of shiny new clubs for around £700 at the time when i just started and really had no idea where to start on what a good set is.
