Is Paul’s Course Tournament Ready? (Deep Dive)

With the first DGPT Event coming up, in collaboration with Paul McBeth & Dylan Cease & Chess.com, we get a revival of the Olympus course (formerly Throw Down The Mountain). There are challenges though with the rugged nature of the course as well as Florida weather conditions.

We finally are coming to the first event of the 2024 season and there’s already some major questions over how this course will play out let’s talk about if this course is truly tournament Ready and before we get started if you want to support this channel I would really really appreciate it I currently have some Ganon bur MD ons and my brand new bag on my site so be sure to check it out it would really mean the world to

Me so before we get too deep I really want to reiterate that this course really has the potential to be a worldclass course even before Paul and Dylan made any changes I think it had the caliber to be a top level course obviously there was a lot of changes

That needed to be made but that still does not degrade from this course being truly one of the most intense and most interesting courses but with that said I think I’ll structure this as kind of a good bad and ugly as a three-part structure uh because I think there is

Some good I think there’s some bad and I think there is some ugly so starting out first we have to talk about how cool of a course this is this is the throw down the mountain course if you are unaware I don’t know how you could not know that

But if you don’t this is the throw down the mountain this is one of the most fun courses that you have ever seen obviously this is a fan favorite this is a player favorite this is also the course we’re some made that like insane drive on whole 16 it was uh where you

Had to go from one Peak to the next and made it inside Circle and then missed his putt which was hilarious the historical nature of this course really cannot be understated and if you have ever seen any lines even before the changes you can definitely see how fun

And interesting it is of course it is insane every single shot feels like you’re playing into a wild jungle it really is insane and the difficulty has been raised even higher with the changes made by Paul and the course designers so the OG course while it was difficult is

Now even more difficult especially for the no layouts which clearly show that Paul has had a very intentional pivot to making sure that every single hole feels Pro level ready so while it does require sometimes 500t drives it also gives you very rewarding and getable birdie looks

But you will have to risk it a little bit with which is kind of what we’re looking for as a Pro Tour event and while I will definitely touch on the ruggedness of the course as a negative I will definitely say on the contrary that

It does look freaking cool this is not a golf course this is truly a disc golf course it is not pristine Fairways by any means there’s insanely High grass right next to Circle one sometimes which really does give you the illusion that if you miss any part of your shot you do

Have the potential to not even be able to see the basket on your next shot and along with that there’s extremely narrow gaps crazy elevation insane up shots where you literally might have to throw a shot blind uphill 200 ft which is just not really a shot shape that we really

Get to see on tour so seeing it as the First Premiere event on tour this year is freaking dope and again while I will touch on this in the negative sense it does look like the weather conditions are looking pretty good so the factor of rain will hopefully not be an issue but

I will touch on that later and the last huge positive is that we get a freaking MLB player Dylan CE and the chess.com team now we don’t know specifics we don’t know who is actually going to be there but we do know that chess.com is the title sponsor along with Discraft

And I can guarantee you that they are wanting to do as much as humanly possible to make this course and make this event as fun as they possibly can now intentions are good we’ll really have to see what that turns out to be as the event truly starts all right so on

To the bad and I’m not sure the date of filming but I think this is probably like a week ago on Casey’s Vlog there was ongoing maintenance by your boy Nick Carl um he was actually doing maintenance on the course and along with that Paul mentioned he was having

Somebody come just a couple days ago to cut down tree limbs and to widen up the fairways now obviously this isn’t a bad thing to do Course Maintenance but it does make you question is this course truly tournament ready right now but like the the beautification parts are

Not finished yet so it is a little bit rough in Parts it’s going to be muddy and especially looking at the footage so far it looks like it is in rough rough shape it is in the Florida climate where rain is inevitable and it certainly seems like when rain does come to this

Course you are playing play a totally different way it is difficult to throw off the teap pads your shoes are caked in clay in mud and it seems like you weigh an extra 5 lbs it looks like and currently it doesn’t look like rain will

Be a part of this event but seeing how rain is so very hard to predict especially in the Florida climate there is no telling if this rain could come on the first day of the event which I believe would really change the way that players are going to play this they

Obviously know it is the first event and they don’t want to do anything crazy don’t want to get injured the first event so they might be playing a a little bit more timid they might be annoyed it definitely has the potential to have backups and if you trying to

Play practice rounds you also have the potential to have rounds that you are just caked in mud it is a long course you have a lot to battle through and it certainly seems like while it will be a fun event to watch it may not look the

Best on camera because so many of these Fairways looks like a truck torpedoed right through the Fairway and it certainly doesn’t look the most professional now once again I kind of like that it is a much more rugged look on tour no one else is doing this but it

Also may look a little less professional especially with chess.com being there and I am fully aware that if players do injure themselves it is on them players are signing wavers fans are signning waivers there’s definitely no true responsibility of Paul and Dylan to have any concern about player safety because

I truly believe they’re doing everything in their power to make it a good and fun and safe course but with these conditions being so varied every single day that potential of injury feels very real and while I certainly still do have high hopes that everything will get

Nailed down even before players get to the practice rounds I don’t necessarily think that it will be truly tournament ready which does feel a little bit sad but also it is freaking chess.com that will be sponsoring this so no matter what I think it’ll be fun and it was

Interesting that in the interview with Paul and ultiworld he actually stated that chess.com wanted to do so many more collabs with Paul uh but he actually declined because he had a lot going on he was injured and a lot of other stuff so chess.com truly is so so down truly

Make the disc golf chest collaboration a true thing and I cannot wait to see what that truly entails even if it is a scaled down version of what it could have been so with that said are you guys concerned at all about these weather conditions do you think it’ll be mostly

Under wraps or do you think it might become a true issue because it does seem like a lot of players are kind of annoyed at the current state but that is kind of the way players go they do like to complain about a lot of stuff but if

Player safety is a concern then I definitely think that those concerns are valid but with that said thank you so much for watching I cannot wait to make more videos about the 2024 season so glad to have it back and I really am so so freaking stoked be sure to subscribe

Wild Runs signing out peace

  1. The course looks awesome. The rain this weekend for the all-star rounds makes it seem fairly treacherous in spots, though.

  2. Heavy maintenance in the weeks before a big event is completely normal for all sporting facilities. Golf, tennis, baseball, race tracks, etc.

  3. Welcome to Florida golf. It could be raining on the front 9 and the back 9 gets no rain. Btw hurricane rounds are the best!

  4. I followed Simon, Calvin, Dickerson and McCray for one round there many years ago. It is an incredible course with beautiful trees, tunnels and elevation changes. It has it all. It will look great, if not perfect, during coverage because almost every hole has dramatic lines and scenery for the viewer to enjoy. It'll be challenging, actually, to film some of the holes properly because of the elevation change, distance and the required shot-shaping.

  5. Rugged terrain courses are needed especially compared to the boring golf courses the pro tour plays. Ongoing maintenance, especially for the first ever Pro Tour event is not a concern. F1 racing in Las Vegas (with millions of dollars invested) was doing major construction and road repairs up until the qualifying rounds. As far as rain goes, that's an element that all disc golfers, especially in Florida have to deal with, but at least it's warm most of the time. We have to keep things in perspective, as there is so little money in this sport for payouts and virtually nothing for course upgrades and ongoing maintenance that it relies on volunteers and the efforts of passionate people to develop and upkeep A-Tier and Pro Tour level courses.

  6. I think the course is getting a lot more criticism than it deserves, and they're making huge strides at beautifying the course and walking paths. It is by far one of the most interesting courses on tour and very "disc golf-esque". Appreciate the shoutout!
