Hey guys it’s Michael welcome back to scratch Golf Academy today we’re going to walk you through a really nice practice session you can try next time you’re out the range we’re going to work on Long irons and Driver one of the main things I’ve seen when I go watch people
Practice at the range is you just go beat balls and leave you didn’t accomplish anything so I’m hoping in my next few videos I can give you guys some structured practice plans so you know exactly what to do when you go to the range so we’re just going to warm up
First of all I like grabbing a wedge I got my 52° here we’re grabbing a couple balls out of our bucket at a time I’ve seen in the past videos you know you don’t want to dump everything out just because it helps you prevent from just smacking balls over and over we’re going
To grab a couple here we’re going to work through some Tempo work and starting about 50 yards working back to 120 I like doing this just to get the body loose uh make sure our Tempo is on time and then that way when we transition into our longer clubs where
The tempo is really important it hopefully transfers into there so hitting a couple here about 50 yards with our 52° nice and smooth is the main thought process here kind of once you feel comfortable there you can start ramping up a little bit to about a 75% swing
There all the way to a full swing it’s okay to mindlessly warm up right you don’t want to get right into a practice session into some intense Focus it’s okay loosen up just focusing on Tempo it maybe one swing thought but we’re not quite in the uh fullon practice session quite yet
Let’s go on one more here obviously you can loosen up high recommend five to 10 balls just loosen it up you don’t want to waste all your balls on warmups but it’s important there we go real nice all right so once we’re nice and loose loosened up what I recommend you do is
Grab your alignment sticks so I have two you can pick these up at Home Depot or Lowe’s or even use two golf clubs I put one down for my feet one down for the club face cuz a big thing that people don’t talk about is getting that club
Face Square so I got my aim Point down there and we’re starting with a six iron because we’re focusing on Long irons we’re going to do 65 and four grab a couple balls out of the bucket at a time what I recommend you do is we’re going
To do eight shots with each Club so what you’re focusing on depends on what you’re kind of going through in your swing right the main thing here with the sticks is you want to make sure you’re aligned where you think you’re aligned I see so many people just get up to the
Ball and I teach students and I say okay uh line up to that flag down there and a lot of the time they’re pointed way right or left but visually and mentally they think that they’re straight so making sure your lines are straight is important so if I’m squaring up my club
Face here to that stick what I like doing here is squaring up my club face to the stick first then gripping the club and then stepping into my shot here to this parallel stick now I know that I’m nice and square right so at least my alignment is on point super important
There so I got my six iron here personally what I’m working on is getting the club to about here I do my little pause then bring it up to the top and feeling like I’m doing a lot shorter of a back swing so we’re making each one
Of these swings very deliberate like I said eight shot with each club and this way should have our long irons feel nice and good so we got our six iron here first let’s head all right a little bit out to the right so the big thing here
Too is especially with the sticks it see how I kind of fed the ball around it gives you a second to stop and pause you got to be deliberate out when you practice you want to get better so you want to be a problem solver also so if I
Just saw something go out to the right I know how to fix it I’m going to try to over exaggerate that feel so for me I tend to get a little bit swipy like this so I want to feel a little bit straighter here with the shoulders let’s focus on that here
Hopefully see some improvement there we go couple different ways you can go about this practice session first one I recommend you pick one target down there I’m going to that sign not sure if you see it but we’re going to stay at the same Target for every single one of our
Clubs now what this does is one it gives you singular Target to focus on throughout the bulk of your session but two allows you to get into a rhythm I am not against though switching up Targets on the Range I think that’s a good idea just because on the course you’re aiming
A bunch of different directions right there’s not a singular Target but for the sake of focusing on grinding through something I do like the singular Target aspect let’s go six iron here really solid so you go eight shots with that now we’re going to go five
Iron same type of thing right take a little break in between so 88 and 8 that’s 24 Shots plus the 5 to 10 that you did call it 30 35 shots then we’ll get into the driver later but again so when I take you to the session so that
Way you have something to focus on here that is extremely important okay so right there very poor shot very poor swing way out to the right so what I’m going to do I’m not just going to go hit my next shot I’m going to put my ball here but
I’m going to really focus on my my changes right I knew that I got a little bit too far ahead the arms dropped down so I want to feel like I’m here get those arms out in front of me like that and I’m feeling that when I come through
And swing so now we kind of have that all drawn up see if we can make a correction should be much better it’s probably the biggest thing I see out the range people hitting poor shots after poor shots after poor shots if anything that’s just reinforcing bad habits if
You want to get better you hit poor shots try to fix it if you’re not with a coach look up one of my videos I probably have something on there for you there a lot of resources out there for you guys should be pretty good so that’s the
Five iron again you go through eight shots there now we got four now for me the four is a little bit more problematic I said eight shots but if you’re really struggling with it take your time if you got to hit 10 you hit 10 right or if you don’t have as
Many balls hit five but it just allows you to have something to do when you get to the course or to the range rather here we go pretty bad swing well off to the right what am I going to do am I going to go up and hit another shot no I’m
Going to figure out why I did that so let’s try to fix this up feel a little bit more back and through just my little things that I need to fix it you guys have your own at home here we go there it is you don’t want to see two
Bad shots in a row when you’re out of the range that’s not good let’s try to fix it all right let’s go on to the driver now so for the driver I don’t have a lot of room here you could leave the uh Club face alignment over there
But I’m just going to put it over here for now we’re going to keep the foot alignment we have our T’s and let’s focus on hitting some shots here now a couple things you can do with the driver and one I do like doing is kind of creating an imaginary Fairway down there
So kind of pick two points there uh there’s a flag on the right and some uh signs on the left I’m going to try to aim in between those two align your stick somewhere in the middle okay and now you’re going to try to hit the
Fairway now if you have enough balls and enough time I recommend you try hit the Fairway 10 times if not you can adjust no worries there so going to go through a little routine make sure I’m aimed correctly try to hit that Fairway out there that was hit really well very happy with
That considering my driver has been a pain point of mine but the cool thing about trying to hit a fairway is you’re acting like you’re off the course right you can if you can see where the ball lands it doesn’t land in the Fairway you
Know you got to do it again whereas a lot of people go under the range and just hit ball off your ball into a big open field it’s not really doing much for you by creating micro targets out there imaginary Fairway it should help you out
So go through it again here try to hit that imaginary Fairway you get the idea right it allows you to practice your routine get into a rhythm and practice what you’re working on but um I should put this little practice session in the description and
I may link my own little six week uh practice plan that you can get for just $5 if it’s not Linked In the description check out my socials uh to go download that it gives you exactly what you need to do when you go to the range for 6
Weeks three practice sessions for week per week so go make sure to check that out subscribe to scratch golf for more tips and everything check out my stuff over on that golf grind and I’ll see you guys out here real soon
