Chipping can be easy but only if you follow this simple process if you don’t we promise you you’ll carry on duffing your chip shots so let’s get the lesson and show you exactly what you need to start right now let’s just go get you actually hitting a few

Okay oh it pretty good pretty good that was pretty good that was actually really nice so let you say you’ve got the ability to play some good shots right okay here we go one of the biggest reasons that you will hit the ground before the golf

Is in your setup so if you just get ready to hit it MH so what we see is if we look at this here if I drop a line here across these shoulders the right shoulder and left shoulder you can see how how much lower this shoulder is to

This one this is fine for your full shots it’s fine for your driver especially but for a short shot I want you to think how can we get it nearer so they’re almost level W now straight away when I do that there’s a lot of things that are changing look at what happened

To your hands when I when I got your shoulders and leveled them your hands went from being well forward to over to go more in the middle yeah so your hands were more in the middle of your body yeah so jump out and I’ll just show you

This most golfers do this right most gol and the thing is we practice so much on our swing yeah that when we come to play a Chip Shot we do the same same sort of thing so if you’re this is kind of you ball back the shaft is forward maybe

Because the ball is back but this right shoulder’s low so often from here you’ll hit the ground before the golf yep okay now because you don’t take a massive divot you can still do some decent shots you can still get it up in the air but often what we find when you’re hitting

Chip shots there’s no Direction maybe maybe that could be a little bit better yeah but look at the length of my swing so if we go here and like this this is exaggerating it by the way but look how this is what you do short back and then

Long on the way through yep so that look nice is crucial here this just how you’re good your Technique is this setup change will will make a massive difference p is the ball always out on my back foot with it with okay so I would like to see if we can have the

Ball middle to front mid okay okay but that will feel really weird middle to front will feel horrible there you won’t H any good shots but as soon as you’re there and actually putting a bit of weight on this lead leg then there’s a chance that’s nice M it’s a consistent

Hit with the ground but the good thing is there’s a lot of weight on that on that okay good good that’s okay that’s fine because we need the the the club has to swing down to get to the ball but if we only do that by putting

The weight on the left leg then it’s good y okay let’s just have a go hit a few shots so balls in the middle which I’m happy with oh nice nice and I don’t know you saw that yep there’s a little bit of check on that and this is where you are

Going to be able to get this you can’t check it from here no the shoulders have to be more like this and I tell you there’s one thing that we did actually we did a some film with a good golf coach and he showed us this and I

Thought this was great so just take your setup for me without a club so imagine you’re going to hit a chip shot put your left hand your glove hand put it on your left leg and slide it down towards the knee now put your hands on the club but

Try and keep that shoulder there carried great so that’s that’s that’s exaggerating let’s just hit one from there that’s actually I really like that that’s nice so the guy who showed us that was a guy called K gray and that’s uh he’s a fantastic golf coach

And yeah got to give him credit for that Andy everyone’s going to be like when I’m on the golf why you touching leg like that what’s wrong with wor if P starts doing [Laughter] that notice the height as well here Tom yeah even though it’s FL wrong flag it’s

All good doesn’t need to go super high like getting it like getting it in that trajectory is nice and just do me a favor put the club Behind the ball okay just let the face just feel as though it’s open there we go that’s nice that’s nice okay have a go from

There that’s nice very good right let’s look at that shot it’s going to go close very quick down there that was good yeah I like that and I as I said to you before we started what I want to do is give you the get you to understand what does a

Good strike feel like to you there’s the strike nice watch this ball yeah that felt good D to one of these he’s not going to be happy unless one goes in I don’t think how’s that feel feels weird yeah but I feel like it feels better okay good Go

In all right not Hing these ground shots first now are we you haven’t put one in the bunker let pick no exactly yeah you haven’t hit one in the bunker no this time well it’s already good for you awesome you know all this causes when

When we get when we do this yeah it’s just so easy to hit the ground first as soon as we get these shoulders level now you can strike in that consistent spot especially like playing in England where is it’s mostly wet and rainy it’s disr that is disastrous and that is where in

The summer my my long u my short game’s great but in the winter I’m like I don’t know what club club to use one and two I’m usually hitting the floor before I’m hitting the ball which means yeah again Tom’s a powerful hitter and again there’s a tendency that something in

Here in your chipping action which again is coming from your long game action but you’ll see what what happened was when you watch the edit back later you foot it came up like a full shot y so it actually came up and you turned your body we don’t need that speed and that

Power so literally when you hit this Chip Shot we’re going to go right we’re going to we are going to put the ball a little bit further forward so the shaft is more neutral but watch my right foot it’s not going to budge it’s going to

Stay on the ground yep it’s all about finesse all right make it look sexy man make it look sexy that’s never been said to me before but I’ll take it I’m actually I’m actually talking to myself all right shoulders down good think of smooth and finesse and all that

Stuff that’s so good nice beautiful greens are slick aren’t they they are fast yeah let’s see if we can get this one now so that the club shaft isn’t so far forward like this let’s see if we can get it a bit more like this

Must one the you almost want the butt of the club pointing more towards your belt buckle there you go I like that so we’re going to get that pointing more let’s get here with that so this is pointing more towards your belly button and the shoulders dropped let it relax let the

Hands relax hands on the club okay that’s so good could be in nice felt good though yeah really good okay good good that was excellent not bad could be in close and the good thing with that one was you did hit the ground before the ball so it wasn’t pure yeah but

Because of having the setup that way it just gave you a little bit more forgiveness nice now that does really good that’s the one that’s so good B check on it come on baby get In yeah felt really good set was really good all right so Black Flag over the bunker just quick one on this one this is where like if I was on a course now I would my buom would be there do you know what I mean let’s just hit a

Few oh that’s a nice perect stri that’s going to work out really well it’s going to take the slow slow down a little bit not take it enough good sh Good Start yeah very good hello oh jeez right nice would you get the strike as well Tom the bunkers are

Relevant yeah L going to do the work to be fair I’ve not even realized the bunkers there there we go it’s good it’s good forgot about it there we go Che for reminding [Laughter] mate Hit the Floor a bit there a little bit yeah just a stri it wasn’t quite

Wasn’t quite pure so what I will say I rushed that a bit didn’t I maybe a little bit but also there’s one thing that we haven’t I was going to see whether you pick up on it or not but if we think about it the ground is sloped a

Bit this way yeah so there if we were to if we can get you to feel as you put a little bit more weight on this left leg because imagine this if we went like this which feels good for balance when you’re on a downhill line you put more

Weight it feels like you should put more weight on the trail foot but what happens is it makes it easy to hit the ground you got to follow the slope you going to go with the slope a bit more so you’re going to feel as though you’re

Just putting a little bit more weight on that left leg wo there we go so what you may want to do to help it is just flare it out of it it makes it a bit more easy to keep the keep the balance there there

You go there we go this is like this is like the hardest shot around the stripping green by you are playing now so has the best strike what check what did you notice on that when you hit it cuz Andy said it was the best strike I

Agree yeah what you feel the connection was great yeah yeah this is it one more this is the one no oh no you can’t finish on that one you haven’t anything like that we 100% hitting another one the first bad one you that is there you go all right here we

Go come on baby too high nice shot though again you look at that you hit that on the golf course 6 ft away yeah three pting I think look I think the big thing for me here for for for this the the big difference is if you’re here right

Shoulder low than left extremely like like Tom was and you’re struggling with strike that’ll be the reason get the feeling of those shoulders being more level get that left hand slide down there from cared and that’s just going to allow you to get more consistent with those contacts ball position we can play

With you can go wherever you like but just be mindful of those contacts when you’re hit those shots Wicked mate Legend amazing make sure you check out the other video that we did with Tom Andy gave him a lesson on his long game which was unbelievable click right there do it

  1. This will help out my own chipping. I have the same issues with my shoulders and never thought about it being an issue.

  2. Great stuff! Would really like to see some more instruction for chipping/pitching on those tight lies around the greens where you have to open the face and use the bounce

  3. Yeah I had to video myself for an online Skillest lesson and I noticed right off the angle of my shoulders when chipping. Exactly like your student here and I knew it wasn't how things should be. My instructor didnt even mention it. You've confirmed that it is indeed one of the culprits of hitting fat shots. I was also pulling the club too far inside and delivering the club from too far inside. The combination of all 3 was deadly.

Danny Maude has a good little tip: grab the club with ap reverse grip (left or lead hand hand low) to level out shoulders. Once you get that feel return to normal grip while maintaining the more level shoulder position.

  4. My short game is very good but I hit the occasional fat boy maybe once out of 50 shots. This is it. I always keep my shoulders level on my close shots but I just realized today I got lazy a bit and now I know why I hit those few bad shots lol. Always a nice refresher to go back to basics. Thanks guys.

  5. I’ve been watching a ton of your videos lately. I must say they are excellent and I’m always learning something new. What degree wedge would you suggest for this shot? Ty
