Really helped our team you know in the last probably week week and a half and we we’ve played pretty good basketball is because our defense has taken a jump and um you know at the end of the day you got to have good offense but um I really believe defense travels and and
Defense establishes an identity and it really helps you especially on those nights when when the ball’s is not falling and that was apparent the other night a confidence building victory over Michigan State on Tuesday team averaging 75 points you allowed him 53 that’s that’s outstanding cam Christie scored
19 he’s big 10 freshman of the week talk about his development this season coach and and what you saw in him in the recruiting process Pam’s a winner um it’s just in his blood you know his mom played at Northwestern his brother obviously played at Michigan State now with the
Lakers so he grew up in it you know Dad was really involved as his you know coach grown up and does a great job with individual talent and development and so he he grew up in it and he’s kind of got that younger brother syndrome and that’s
What I noticed when I recruited him is that kind of chip on his shoulder that I’m going to prove I’m just as good if not better than my older brother right and um and he’s just competitive by Nature he’s got zero fear um super confident you I talked a lot about
Having a rational confidence he has that in a good way um and I think now he’s just kind of coming into his own I think you know every freshman kind of hits a wall and he had a little bit of it but now he’s battled through that wall and now I
Think he’s playing like a sophomore coach Elijah Hawkins tops of the nation nearly eight assists a game but I always look at that assisted turnover ratio he’s almost 3 to one that’s off the charts if you were to list a couple of his Hallmarks and finding teammates the way he does her
Baskets what would be at the top of your list I think he just does a good job especially in early offense whether that’s transition or a little bit of delayed transition um you know because of his speed and his height he can kind of sometimes get lost and he’ll find
That little Gap to to drive and he’ll find guys I think um he’s improved as a passer late in shot clock finding guys late um and to his credit you know beginning of the year there was a couple games where you know I didn’t allow him
To finish the game because I I didn’t trust it yet and he had some of those careless turnovers that he had Howard and he’s just grown and developed and have a much better feel of when to Fort it and when not to and he’s done a
Really good job of just taking care of the ball and I think it started with him just you know focusing on hitting singles and once you hit singles and you hit enough of them those singles eventually turn to doubles and triples and um and now he’s just really seeing
It but I think his overall push early has really helped this team with our pace and uh and it’s helped just get early ball movement man how valuable is a player like Dawson Garcia to your team Beyond scoring points yeah I think you know one thing
That he brings is just his mentality um he’s a true warrior I mean every drill every day every rep every practice he sets the tone with his effort you know a guy that’s played a lot of basketball I think that’s important especially with the newer team um he’s got a lot of
Games under his belt he’s got you know this is the first time in his career he’s gone back to back with the same head coach so he’s he’s comfortable in the system and with that comes confidence and I think that’s what this team really needed was you know leadership but that confident
Playthrough guy um that that has unbelievable work ethic that teaches this team like how we do things here and so I think all of that he just sets the tone for us coach uh lastly a word about the Hawkeyes this afternoon it was a real another rivalry rhubarb up in
Minneapolis January 15th not decited until the final few minutes what about Iowa the second time around I think they’re obviously a a high potent offensive team they they lead our league and fast B transition points um they’re really really good at home I mean really
Good at home um so we’ve got to make sure that uh we don’t allow them to just live in transition uh we got to make sure we do a great job on their post I think their bigs are really good they’re they’re they’re playthrough bigs I mean
They can pass it they can find Cutters late find them early they can they can beat you one-on-one um they can get to the front of the rim um they can beat you in transition and so it’s going to be a tough challenge I
Mean we we have to make sure that uh we don’t get away from what’s made us successful uh in our style of basketball we get we can’t get caught up in in their pace of play because that’s Advantage them um and we just got to have a a road warrior mentality

Was Stern and it was honest but it wasn’t come in and rip everybody’s face off and start pointing fingers and you didn’t do this and you didn’t do that that’s not going to that’s not going to change the course of the second half so it’s challenging them to be more
Competitive with our defense whether we’re trapping ball screens or we’re not trapping ball screens if we’re in our press if we’re not in our press but then also not put your head down and drive into packs of people get the ball moving you know create some opportunities where
There’s penetration and cutting and uh our execution in that regard was so much better in the second half you know so you’re just proud of the guys when they respond like that and Coach once again you outrebound Minnesota we got some big guys in there but you win the battle of
The board which is part of defense and went a long way to winning the game and we went small a lot Bobby as you know we went small in the first half small in the second half uh and that’s always a risky situation in this league but uh
You know they they they had some small guys in there uh you know Payne was in foul trouble you know Garcia I think tweaked his ankle uh Fox was in foul trouble so we went with the smaller guys and that obviously I think really helped our offense as well coach the big guys

Just F like we were fighting the rest of the half to try to get that back and um you know you look at the numbers and obviously you know shooting 46 from three you know getting to the line shooting around 70% um only having 10 turnovers verse pressure having 21
Assists it was a defensive side of the ball um you know we couldn’t get a stop and and it was really they just they own the paint I I think for the game um or for the second half I want to say they only made like three threes or something
Like that um maybe not I don’t know yeah three or seven in the second half so it wasn’t like they were bombing threes you know it was like they were just living in the paint off the post touch off the drive we couldn’t keep them off the line
Um but we just we lost that defensive uh Edge you guys obviously had a lot of momentum coming in this game and the way you played to get the 20-point lead how do you keep the guys you know feeling good about themselves and then you obviously don’t know that’s stand up
Thought yeah I think um you know we got to definitely learn from it and we got to learn and we talked a lot about just leading up to this game you know what got us to this point and it was our mentality it was our Edge it was our
Fight you know and 85 90 game is not our not our type of game you know and again that was a point emphasis all week that we have to make this you know our type of game I thought in the first half it was um you know to be able to hold them
To I think it was 38 yeah the tempo and the pace was our pace and um and we just lost our way what was the biggest difference you saw defensively from them in the second half I just thought they they forced the issue and they were the aggressor and
You know we really believe that the aggressor always wins and they just live downhill they were aggressive getting into their stuff they aggressive with their push kind of got us on our heels um I think a couple fouls got us tentative to guard a little bit um and
Then I think when Dawson went down we just we were we weren’t the same mentality wise on the defensive end with just our our ability to get stops and our toughness to get stops Ben Johnson spot on when they lost Dawson Garcia that was a big loss but uh
So be it uh it’s never easy on the road when you lose your star player uh you know it’ be the equivalent of the Hawkeyes losing a pton Sanford or a Tony Perkins indeed and the Hawks Dodge one here at Carver winning rallying and uh posting a 9085 victory and uh I think
