So in today’s video I’m going to talk about very much how to release this arm many golfers get this movement fundamentally very very wrong and once you understand how to release the arm correctly it’s going to make a massive difference let’s get stuck into it so first things first what we want to

Understand is in the top of the back Su position we need to have a decent amount of width and width is going to be created by the relationship between your lower arm and if you like your upper arm or if you want to say your bicep and

Your sort of forearm like so we want to make sure we’re at 90° if we get a little bit too narrow like this then we’re going to struggle to really introduce a lot of the skills that we’re going to learn from today’s lesson so back sing 90° now first thing that we

Need to understand is that as we initiate the downswing you’re going to allow this arm or this relationship to straighten so see the way that my forearm immediately moves away from my bicep as I initiate the down swing now this movement helps create an element of shallowing okay so what happens with a

Lot of golfers is if you pull down like this this is steepening if you move your forearm away can you see the way this creates an element of shallowing so when we’re doing this Movement we want to be aware of the feeling of allowing the arm

To straighten but we need to make sure that your forearm is pointing up towards the sky the combination of both of those is absolutely key to being able to get the club to come down that plane line in the early downswing position we don’t

Want to be moving this way we want to be very much moving this way if we were now to focus our attention on the club head say about 2 feet to the right of the ball to the club head about 2T to the left of the ball what we want to avoid

Is any excessive forarm movement now there is always going to be some forarm movement to help you square the face but the point is what we don’t want is any excessive motion like what I’m doing here and the way you’re going to counteract that is by still incorporating that feeling of the

Forearm so if you come in towards the downswing and then from here what you do is you really allow your right forearm to rotate over the ball like so then this is going to have an excessive amount of closing on the club face now

What we want to do is you want to keep that feeling of that right forearm pointing more up towards the sky even in towards this position here okay like so now what we don’t want is any excessive closure what we do want is more of a feeling like we’re sort of throwing the

Club down so once we’ve hit the golf ball we still want to get this feeling that this forearm is still pointing very much up towards the sky so the feeling that I like to get my students to do is the feeling of throw and there’s no better way of getting a sense of

Throwing rather than using a rope trainer so the idea of using a rope trainer as we start the down swing is we want to feel like the Rope is moving very much outward so see what I’m doing here I’m not pulling it down inward the Rope is moving outward like so now as

I’m moving that rope outward what I’m also going to do is make sure that my upper arm is moving to the side of my body and that’s the reason why I love the swing budy because it’s the length of a s you can actually concentrate on letting the Rope itself just graze the

Floor as I’m demonstrating here and then you can couple that with the feeling of the forearm not overtaking too much and get the feeling of really finishing up and through keeping that forearm nice and passive in the bottom part of the Swing it’s going to make a massive

Difference work on it for those of you that don’t do this you know the swing buddy is obviously an option the other thing you can do is just take the weight of a club turn it upside down and try and get that feeling of see what I’m doing here you can hear that

Sound like so wel on it I’ll see you soon

  1. Enough of this ridiculous Swing Buddy puffery already! You can do the same thing with a bit of old rope. Or a knotted towel. This is just getting embarrassing…

  2. Q.? What is the difference between casting the club vs. releasing the arms in the downswing. Thanks Gary B in Minnesota USA

  3. Excellent advice to swing down to side of body not in front of body in the down swing all the while keeping trail forearm pointing to the sky
