Rule 16.1c
If a player’s ball is in a bunker and there is interference by an abnormal course condition on the course, the player may take either free relief under (1) or penalty relief under (2):
(1) Free Relief: Playing from Bunker. The player may take free relief under
Rule 16.1b, except that:
The nearest point of complete relief and the relief area must be in the bunker.
If there is no such nearest point of complete relief in the bunker, the player may still take this relief by using the point of maximum available relief in the bunker as the reference point.

(2) Penalty Relief: Playing from Outside Bunker (Back-on-the-Line Relief). For one penalty stroke, the player may drop the original ball or another ball (see Rule 14.3) outside that bunker, keeping the spot of the original ball between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped (with no limit on how far back the ball may be dropped). The spot on the line where the ball first touches the ground when dropped creates a relief area that is one club-length in any direction from that point, but with these limits:
Limits on Location of Relief Area:
Must not be nearer the hole than the spot of the original ball, and
May be in any area of the course except the same bunker, but
Must be in the same area of the course that the ball first touched when dropped.

Hey Blakey here from grq I’m just going to show you situation that you might come across if your ball ever ends up on an immovable obstruction in a bunker okay so the situation is that my ball is on top of the steps which is an immovable obstruction and we are in the

Bunker so it’s on top of the steps which is in the bunker that means I can have free rele because I’ve got interference to my lie or my swing or even my stance if it were so I get the free relief under rule 16.1 but now I need to work out where my

Nearest point of complete relief is so because it’s in the bunker I don’t get to take free relief outside okay there’s no free relief option outside I have to stay in the bunker so I work out my nearest point of complete relief that’s uh no nearer the hole

Still in the bunker at the nearest point where I have no interference so it’s going to be around around about there and then I get one Club length that’s the driver Club the longest Club in your bag except the putter uh for most people it’s going to be a

Driver and I get to drop within that area now it’s on a bit of a slope so I don’t think it’s going to stay there but we go through the process of dropping once from knee height and dropping twice from knee height now I need to try and place it on that

Spot place it once and now try again place it Twice now I need to find a spot where it will stay at rest and I’ve luckily found managed to find a spot it doesn’t give me much of a much of a a a shot a swing uh so this is going to need a lot more luck than

Skill now with this situation there actually is another option a penalty option because I have interference with an immovable obstruction in the bunker and the penalty option goes like this where my ball was at rest in the bunker from the flag through that point outside the bunker I can take

Relief for a penalty of one so I work out that line and I get to drop on that line or as close to that line as possible and it can roll up to one Club length that’s a on shot penalty dropping from knee height right on that

Line it rolls closer to the hole but within the one Club length and the club length is defined by your longest Club in your bag not your Putter and which is obviously going to be longer than my wedge so it’s in play now and that’s going to cost me a one shot penalty Po

  1. Sometimes golf is about luck, more than skill. 😂
Taking a stroke penalty might sometimes be a better option than "free" relief. 😊

  2. rule :19.3 – in the bunker 1 penalty stroke, but outside bunker back-on-the-line penalty is two penalty stroke. Isn’t it?
