Swing down or up on Fairway Woods? Staying behind the ball is hurting your swing! Move through it!

Hey Golfers,
There is a ton of information about how to swing your fairway woods. Do you sweep the ball or hit down are a couple of contradictory approaches. Both are correct, and either can be used depending on the ball’s lie or off a tee.

If you struggle to hit fairway woods, either topping the ball or hitting behind the ball, then your head and body may be the cause. Trying to keep the head down or staying behind the ball can adversely affect your ball striking. Instead, you want to move and rotate forward through impact. Moving properly through impact does create a slight downward angle of attack, however, that is perfectly acceptable for fairway woods.

As I stated in a previous video on not keeping your head down, the same rule applies to fairway woods. Use this simple but challenging drill to change your movements through impact and begin crushing your woods!

Hey golfers here’s another video on why you should not keep your head down and you need to keep moving through the ball hey golfers so my last video I talked about keeping the head down how you should not do that and letting your body go through the shot I was really

Trying to get low point in front of the ball and with an iron it’s generally a little bit easier to practice that but I want to show you how you can do the same thing with the fairway wood here here I have five wood I want to still get that

Feeling that I’m swinging a little bit down now it’s not going to be like a a 9 7 degrees down this going to be a little bit shallower around that we’ll say 2 to five range but it it’s really important that we do get this low point in front

Of the ball because if you have a tendency you have trouble hit in Fairway Woods because you hit behind it or you top it it’s actually the same problem we get the low Point behind the ball and instead of instead of front of the ball so this little half swing drill where

You really focusing on getting through the shot and getting your Trail side through it is critical and you can see here I just shot this in slow motion that that’s a different motion than when you stay back and stay down on it like I have a tendency to do

Here so a good way of just getting comfortable with it is just go ahead and let that set get to right about here okay and I do have to work a little bit more width I’ll get to that but I really want to go ahead and really kind to get

That set and get myself through the shot and I’m looking for this extension this Reach This acceleration all the way through and if uh earlier on I kind of didn’t have my settings right bumped up the ceiling but that’s okay I want to get this down and get this through get

My chest opened up and get through the shock uh that one was 4.7 down which is okay when doing this drill so what can I do move that ball position forward if 4.7 is too much move it forward but then keep myself moving set it and move through and again this is a

Drill trying to open myself up and this is something I have to practice and I’ll just work on making the swing longer longer longer keep that feeling going it’s important and critical that you use your feel in your hands and in your body those are your sensors to help train new motor

Patterns so realize that feeling in your hands and arms are critical in that so that was uh 5.9 down six down but see what that looks like in video definitely much more feel wise much more forward through the shot and then as that gets bigger you keep feeling

It as in the swing gets longer and get through still a little nervous about the ceiling but so stay with that drill to help give a feel and run this through your woods now do I want to be swinging down with the driver um not

Really I like to be at zero a little bit up for for Less Spin and and um little higher launch angle but for the woods you can use the same drill we did with the irons in order to kind of get help you get through the shot so set

Up and then get through it nice and long arms through impact for more information come and join us over at hum. goof we go a little bit deeper in these conversations and you can get your swing analyzed three-dimensionally talk to you’all soon later hey golfers don’t forget to

  1. Expanding on the topic of hitting too much down – aside from a ball position that's too far back at address what are some other causes (and what would be some solutions)? (Tour Pros average 4* down on irons, so if someone is 7-9* down that's obviously too much).
