Ladies and gentlemen we are experiencing technical difficulties please stand by all right here we go brought down here on this Saturday Morning Edition of sant Saturday uh we have Brendan Martin in the studio in Okala Florida the Limestone capital of the world in World Equestrian Center uh Dave Tomkins in the

Low Country Buford South Carolina Frank Duffy I believe in New Orleans in the Crescent City uh Doug Dean will join us in hour number two around a quarter and nine we’re g to try to have a quick uh bit with Jack Turner the Barrister and residents of Sidelines talking about

These nil lawsuits and making sense out of what is going on so hey get ready get your pen and paper handy we’re about to have a Blast [Applause] Sidelines with Rob Brown talks 4orty to Me all right we are here uh it is Savant Saturday on this beautiful morning it is a look lots of chatter coming in last night about it’s a big day for college basketball and it really is uh and then I got this great text from I love it

From Dave Tomkins OMG about Dolly Parton uh and I’ll let I’ll let you talk about that real quick but uh in in just a second but I tell you she has made a not to say a comeback she never went anywhere she ain’t but 76 years old but

Uh she’s uh she’s stronger than 50 acres of fresh cut onions and got an incredible voice but uh I mean Leonard skinnard When you mention Leonard skinnard on this show uh you get everybody really fired up and lately I’ve been seeing all these pictures there was a 1974 concert Leonard skinnard played at

Liberty Bowl Stadium in Memphis and uh oh my God it was unbelievable in the 1976 when the Rolling Stones played there they had to tear up all the grass and replant the field because of all the seeds of weed that had fallen in the grass it was growing up all over the

Field not that anything crazy went on there but Dave uh let’s lead us yeah let me just I mean I’m I I got tears in my eyes um I so 30 minutes earlier I I listened to it and it it was absolutely religious um so it’s Dolly Parton

Covering Freebird and I mean it’s the full 11 minute version with all the great music that you know the follows the lyrics and stuff and she was meant to sing this song I mean she was meant to sing this song it was not meant to be

Sung by Ronnie vanzan it was meant to be sung by Dolly Parton I mean it is amazing I mean it is just let me just like I’m I’m you know I’m apologize for the for the hyperbole but it is so good and then there’s the backstory so it’s

It’s um it’s I guess it was basically dropped and put out by Garden and Gun Magazine yeah the only magazine in the world that that that the boys love just as much as the girls um and it it told a backstory about Gary rington their you know slide guitar player for Leonard

Skinner and how they coaxed him to actually come out and do it now Gary’s probably had what 78 million cigarettes in his career and he said I’m in poor health I can’t I can’t do this and they told him that dolly was gonna actually do the be the person singing goes I feel

A lot better now I think I’ll do it so anyway do yourself a favor after the show listen to our show listen to Savant Saturday and then after the show listen to Dolly dude Freebird I mean it is absolutely religious well she’s got a voice that’s just uh incredible anyway

And I mean and I I don’t know if she writes her WR so that that definitely will want to hear that I mean that that uh that song here’s the deal in Memphis you can make it across the doodo Hernando doto Bridge what we call the new bridge from Downtown Memphis over to

West Memphis and back and it’s still you know the guitar at the end 11 minutes that’s like the over under and you know coach Bryant and the smoke coming out of the Golden Flake potato chips that’s right when will he mention Golden Flake how fast will it do Frank Frank you’re

Down in New Orleans uh y there’s a lot going on saw pictures of your horse yesterday the the red it’s a red horse isn’t it her chestnut colored yeah she definitely readed uh you know her her sister is like a dark brown and I was like you know you know when you get

These horses you don’t know you know this the different sers their jeans just kick in and they just look totally different but she’s got some wonderful confirmation Rob so I just wanted to send y’all some pictures of her and to this day I still love her name nip it in

The bud in honor of Barney F uh yeah we’re we’re excited about having her run she she’s getting ready to start doing her training we are eight weeks away from the Arkansas Derby yeah we are and I’m ready to get my my my one that’s

On the track to get her second race she you know she she has had the uh Zion Williamson disease of every nagging injury that athlet can have she’s kind of caught it from Zion down here with the Pelicans so I’m ready to get her back on the track like uh Tony said get

Out there aing we need to get her out there aing well you know the bottom line is that you look here in Memphis and Arkansas there is a big media blitz right now about oakw and so we’re gonna go over there Frank because we got a lot

Of guys here in Memphis and the Cherry Farm that want to go over there and watch your horse run and Audrey used to go over there uh her in-laws from her first marriage used to be big time uh like to wager on the horses over there

And you know what’s funny is I don’t know when you go to a horse race it’s got to be really cool it’s probably like going to a Nascar event I would think but we our our audience is you know the Southeastern Conference footprint we cover Sports in the South like Kudzu and

Cotton and that includes the Masters which is an iconic event the Kentucky Derby and certainly oakw over in Hot Springs and if you hadn’t been to Hot Springs we love Hot Springs yeah is that a cool yeah hot springs is awesome and by the way Oakland what’s really great

About it is is Arkansas has really done you know big strides about getting really good purses yeah uh they they have they have put their money where their mouth is literally uh for that industry and you know race horsing is a dying business it is it is just a it’s a

Retracting industry but yet Arkansas has stepped up the per the size of the purses the number of races so you’re getting a lot of of NOW Thor breeds like like our our Tu Bells the one and and the next one that’s coming up nippet um they were they were basically raised on

Kentucky Bluegrass in with their mama but a month before she dropped we got her in Arkansas she so she could be qualify for those Ary Brad races where just you know the the purses are just you know some of the best in the industry right now so so so March 30th

Is the Arkansas Derby and um it is the uh the most important weekend for prep Derby prep races look what’s going on that weekend so you have the Arkansas Derby in in Hot Springs you have the Florida Derby uh down in Fort lale at um

Gulf Stream you have um a a derby prep race in London and a derby prep race in Dubai so that is that weekend winning you’re in all four of those horses that win those races are in the derby and that’s fantastic and Dubai is about 45 minutes south of Little Rock isn’t it

Yeah exactly exactly just just I mean how you know what’s cool how big horse racing is around the world yeah that that’ll blow your mind and of course these are people over there um that have so much money but the the horse racing what’s what’s really neat the the

College of veter Medicine at Auburn has the deal where they hold I think 25 or 30% of the spots for Kentucky students and they come from usually University of Kentucky and Murray State but Kentucky do have its own V school so they train down there at Auburn um in E ewine

Studies and go back up in the Bluegrass Country and there I mean Dave you know this and Frank you do the Bourbon Trail now correct me if I’m wrong is valued at something like $50 billion what that does to the economy of Kentucky and horse racing Bourbon and horses and they go hand

Yeah being being on a race race at the racetrack and especially if you’re an owner I mean there’s just something special about going in and going into the paddock when they’re saddling your horse and you’re talking to your trainers I mean and I’ve got we’ve got

Two great ones Tom Amos uh which is going to have our Louisiana horses uh Ron mouette who has our Arkansas horses and to go in and speak with them as they’re saddling you got the jockey there there’s this feeling of anticipation excitement it’s palpable and there’s just something about walking

Back up taking a nice draw on a good Woodford Reserve or a you know a bullet BB and then and then having that gate open and you hear that Bell and and look everybody’s got shot Dave will tell you every three-year-old has a shot it is the most

Egalitarian sport that there is it is a free market it is an absolute free market yeah it’s a free market all you got to do be fast there’s only one variable Nothing Else Matters nothing else counts it doesn’t hey you don’t have to look like pton Manning getting

Off the freaking bus uh as long as you’re fast you could be small large good good confirmation lousy confirmation and look as happened four times in in the derby the girls sometimes jump up and beat the boys in fact just I’m two miles from the fairgrounds right here in New Orleans

And one of the greatest horses rizen star who won the press and won the Belmont got nipped at the in the Kentucky Derby by a Philly it cost him the the Triple Crown in fact I know his owner you know his owner Lamar is a a

Big uh car dealer here he’s real good friends in fact he advertises on Scott Alexander’s show Prime Time Sports with Scott Alexander where I’m on a lot here in New Orleans but you know you’ve got these you know these These Little Phillies that all of a sudden jump up

And and win a Kentucky Derby every now and again it just shows you it doesn’t matter the sex or unlike us crazy humans no just and just YouTube I mean YouTube Derby races and just just spend three hours you know YouTube I mean they’re they’re they’re two minutes long and you

See a pattern that develops is that that race does not really start until the third turn so yeah it’s a mile and a quarter race but really it’s the last half mile that matters and horses like like Street sense in 2007 came from 19th position out of 20 at the third turn to

Win and once you make that third turn which is the far turn on the field and I think hope we’re all going to be in the infield here on the first Saturday May doing Sidelines um there you go um we but but but at that third turn that’s

Where the race really defines itself and there is nothing there’s no better 45 seconds in sports than from third turn to the finish line and there’s no better hour in in entertainment and just bucket list than to be in the paddock at Churchill Downs the hour before the

Derby between race 12 race 13 well and I and I’ll say this growing up with my kids their favorite movies what even close were the movies about horses like stripes and different ones you know about just that Underdog horse and that coach D used to always say at the

Beginning of every season about who’s going to win the SEC and he would respond well sooner or later the race goes to the one who thinks he can goes to the horse who thinks he can you know you you know Stonewall Jackson it’s inscribed on the barracks on the walls

At Virginia Military Institute where my grandfather my great great-grandfather a lot of my family attended uh VMI it says you may be whatever you resolve yourself to be and he was a professor of history and uh mathematics professor but I love that and it it draws the parallels in

College football I mean bourbon horse racing you go to a football game in the South and and I’m telling you we’re going to be Brenda and I have been talking about this we’re going to do it documentaries I want to hit all 16 SEC campuses and do something about

Tailgating on the different campuses because they’re all different LSU tailgating uh oh God and then when they go on the road they’re the ambassadors hey we want to bring peace to the world send LSU about a thousand LSU Tailgators over in the Middle East and let them

Start cooking for everybody and I think that I think it’ll bringing peace to the world because they’re the I love them they’re the coolest people they I know so many LSU fans and they are passionate and people say well I go down there they Rock the bus well did you see what

Happened the first time Alabama ever came to Auburn I was there they almost knocked the Alabama bus off the over okay fans get excited it’s okay and I’m gonna tell y’all I y’all’s knowledge of horses I mean I’m so fired up about going to this because I’m going to be

With people that understand what is going on and one of the things looking at what’s going on in college basketball college football right now we had this discussion we do it a lot on this show we’re not afraid to voice an opinion and I’m gonna throw this to both of y’all we

Are looking at money that’s being paid out in nil and you say well you know we’re just a bunch of grumpy old guys you know get off of my lawn yelling at the clouds no we’re not because what did our fathers and grandfathers and grandmothers all tell

Us they were right okay they were right we we flipped the narrative in this country you know you go out in public now you got people riding around on scooters and golf carts and grocery stores because they’re so big I mean it let’s be honest we didn’t see that

Coming up it’s whatever it is uh we we we we think it’s okay to get up and eat you know six eggs and a half a slab of bacon biscuits gravy Grill and lay back down on the couch and play video games all day our parents and grandparents got

Up and worked this is going to happen in nil minute wait a minute fast forward to to Modern Times yeah go good Brandon sorry I was just gonna say because I like me a breakfast burrito with the cool like wind blowing through my hair rolling down Fort King Avenue and my

Golf cart okay but the store okay but but you’re working but you work your ass off and so does Dave so does Frank this work Rob this is no it’s not well I mean I mean fast forward to to Modern Times And I mean you know Mark Zuckerberg went

For years on Ramen right he he I mean there were some years of coding and creating Facebook and starting at Harvard then going to Stanford all the stuff he did before he got a dollar of of of of of salary um yeah you know and and he he he’s a billionaire and and

Think what you want to about him and and and his like yeah but he earned it yeah damn it I mean he earned it I mean he he he created he went from zero to one to to to a trillion yeah and um and and and and

Nil compromises that it it it pays you before you you have earned anything and that’s what I hate about nil and it poisons those kids I mean it’s it’s it’s terrible yes I this is I I woke up this morning and goes this is g to be my get

Off the lawn Saturday because it’s just yeah I hate nil well well and and I tell you why we do it’s because I know Brendan and I’ve been talking to his dad on this show for the last two and a half years I talked to Brendan a lot now he’s

Our executive producer he is as real as it gets uh I know Frank I know you Dave and Doug will be on here shortly Jack Turner my attorney the Barrister in Residence of Sidelines none of us were ever paid on future earnings potential value whatever I mean sometimes you can

Move firms and get paid Upfront for a five-year deal you got to stay five years and if you leave one year in you owe 80% of that money within 30 days no no no no negotiation okay um and Frank you know if in when you’ve built up Duffy realy

No one came to you and said Frank here’s a pile of money because we like you and your wife you and Rhonda are so so nice in fact we think you’re going to be so nice over the next 20 years you’re going to sell 45,000 houses in the Atlanta

Market that’s how it works Frank isn’t it well let me tell you I can remember to this day putting the first signs together in the garage and Ron and I and we were joking you were like you know hey look let’s give this thing a go by

The way that’s one of Richard Branson’s favorite phrases when he starts a new business well let’s just give it a go what happens and you’re exactly right Rob if you don’t get and look this was one of the toughest most challenging years for Real Estate we’ve had with

Rising and and contraction of markets I don’t want to get in the minutia but this was one of the hardest years so you still have to block and tackle and you got to go back to fundamentals you know and and look whatever made you successful 21 and a half years ago you

Sometimes have to go back and suck it up and be humble and get back to blocking and tackling and getting back to the fundamentals of business or life or you know whatever your sport might be and uh and and it’s humbling I look and sometimes you don’t get back I mean you

Know you know look at a bellich I mean you know here it is he’s he was at the apex of the of the industry of and the game kind of changed on him yeah and and when he lost when he lost Brady he couldn’t get back to it so you know and

Now he can’t even get he can’t get a an interview again I thought the Falcons were going to hire him I don’t think he’ll ever be on a sideline again so yeah you got to be nimble and and you’ve got to you’ve got to kill and eat what

You kill but you got to be out there hunting every day I love the old saying whether you’re a gazelle or the lion come Sun up on a serengetti your ass better be moving and and and that’s what you got I love that kudos to you Frank because because real estate in my

Opinion is the most noble of professions there is no retainer in real estate you don’t sign a contract and say okay I’m going to put the real estate agent on retainer yeah it is all commission it is all backend base it is only paid upon wire transfer and and you have to go

Through all the whole process of of courting and selling and and the inspections and all the BS that comes in the inspections and all the work that has to be done a lot of times the real estate agent has to like front that money to to to you know conduct the

Inspection all for the back end of the of the 3% or the 6% or whatever and so I think it’s it’s it’s it is free enterprise just personified it really is it it is the free Mark and it’s so funny Ron and I we always joke when people

Over the last 21 21 and a half years asked us what we do for a living we don’t say the words we’re real estate agents we say we’re professional gamblers because that is exactly what we do all day every day and if you don’t make it on your wits you’re done to to

Rob’s point just like with him in financial services hey if you’re if you’re a fiduciary if you’re an raia and you’re getting paid based upon the net increase of someone’s portfolio yeah if it don’t increase guess what you ain’t getting a commission you’re on the same side of

The table with your clients was what I do and and and one of the things on this show we’ve got a highly educated audience uh lot of fans in the South we got fans everywhere and want to say it is Veterans hunt day and youth hunt day

In Arkansas David Baker member of the Cherry Farm my good friend a member of my CIO group at St Louis Catholic Church he’s out there he goes man life is great I’m standing out here in the middle of a flooded corn field with ducks trying to

Hit me they’re like bees around me and I’m like well I wish I but he earned that you know here’s the thing he’s if he gets checked by a game warden today he pulls out the card and that’s that’s a powerful for eight years he was in the

Army but um you know the bottom line what I see about nil what you know Frank I bet you were scared you and Rhonda many times starting your business and you never you never get over that Dave you know that with startup Venture Capital Brendan you

Know that with things that you do I Know It with what I do fear is a great motivator but you got to use it in the right way and you know Audrey always says uh about your mindset junk in junk out positive in positive out that’s what

We do on Sidelines and we’re looking for Solutions but I’ll say say this about nil the reason I think you got to have it we know that but I think that fans and Frank alluded to this a couple of years ago when three of his friends in Louisiana that owned businesses backed

Three LSU players and none of them played in the bowl game there’s got to be teeth in those contracts you got to have follow through and we’re looking here in basketball right now SEC when I think about this conference I can’t remember guys top to bottom South Carolina pick number

14 and they are sitting there right now maybe maybe the best team in the conference they’ve just beaten Tennessee and Kentucky in the last week Dave Tomkins in the Low Country going on the road to Georgia today for a trap game I mean that’s a trap game I mean they can

Lose in Athens yeah and and yeah Mike white leaves Florida goes to Georgia is he going to do what Kirby Smart did take him from nine and 10 win a year every year under Mark Rick to where now they’re going to get into the 20s and

That’s going to be the new standard I’ll tell you what they’ve got they’ve got an atmosphere now at home games in Georgia which they’ve never had before I went in there when LSU played what uh eight or nine days ago yeah two Wednesdays ago I

Went in and sat there in fact I went said hi to my good buddy Chuck dowle on the Georgia broadcast team and of course John Brady and Chris Flair the tiger team and and and sitting there I was like I’ve never witnessed Stegman like it was on that Wednesday night and and

The place was rocking so they’re taking almost a Kirby sort of vibe like they did on that uh spring game what was it the 92k game yes they’re bringing it over into basketball and you know they’ve had a couple hiccups lately but I think it is going to be a tough game

For South Carolina but let me tell you watching South Carolina go into Tennessee and beat the vs uh I think South Carolina is the story of the NCAA season so far I mean it’s just and look like John Brady coach coach and my good buddy Scott Alexander

Were over here drinking wine the other night we were watching the old Miss Mississippi State game literally on this couch where I’m sitting and like coach Brady said he goes we all thought South Carolina was going to be the last place team in the conference he goes but but

With the transfer portal it’s a wild card it’s like Forest Gump with a box of chocolates you don’t know what get and and he goes man what I’m seeing from South Carolina he goes they’re the Feelgood story of the year so far and I

I agree with him it’s a b and what the SEC has that the national media does not yet give us credit for is we have really good basketball coaches in the SEC and I mean I looked at the Slate of of of games today in the SEC and I said you

Know what I’m wrong with what I’ve been saying I you know I always say you know the Big 12 is the best followed by the Big East we’ll see in March but I maybe the SEC is the best basketball conference this year maybe it might be we we debate

This I don’t we debate it we talk about is it the Big 12 the Big East I I love college basketball growing up in Memphis going to watch the Memphis Tigers play and Big Jack Eaton he would always say great Caesar’s ghost and uh when happen

And and Dana Kirk and Keith Lee uh and where is willford William Bedford Baskerville Holmes uh James Bradley Andre Turner they built a a a a a following at the University of Memphis basketball I mean we slid on Ice during the ice storm in 74 slid to the Midsouth

Coliseum to watch that again it was sold out and we used to have tickets we get to go to the games with uh our friends the berries right in front of Jack Eaton and Harold grater who’s on our show a lot who executive VP of the AutoZone

Liberty Bowl would be there working when he was in high school for him but growing up college basketball is an intimate Sport and I think of LSU Frank it blows my mind we’ve got you Scott rabet uh and he is incredible writer for The Advocate I mean what a Class Act uh

Jimmy the otfa uh I 104.5 ESPN in Baton Rouge and jacqu duay he said Dale Brown would always say uh why the S Dale Brown’s from North Dakota I might add you know where something spicy on the food is Pepper or Salt’s great saying that and who had the biggest road

Win this week the Florida Gators at Tennesse I mean no I mean Kentucky Kentucky Kentucky at Kentucky how you know how hard it is to get a win at rup Arena Brendan uh yeah I do actually I do I I’ve been to R Arena i’ I’ve been a gator I’ve watched

Watched my team get their ass kicked by by by Kentucky at the buzzer so many times has I mean God Almighty do I ever know so yeah I get it but uh you and you know that was such a huge win uh and I just like because I like to throw this

Up there every time we talk about there we go that’s what I’m that was that was my right there I want to see that yeah there it is yeah so uh that was after the Kentucky game that’s how big of a deal that’s how hard it is to win in rep

Arena right you know and and that could make the big you that could put Florida uh you know in the tournament you know versus being in the uh uh like it’s like and or no it’s like this kind of a win you know vaults you into you potential

Uh you know getting into the tournament and and it’s those kind of things that is that is last for in that is uh Joe lonardi you know they’re they’re they’re in the tournament yeah so I think Florida is gonna be our swing team between nine or 10 I really do I I think

I think if we can sneak Florida in you could see 10 SEC teams in in the in the dance and let me tell you we come out of this SE this season as tough as up from top to bottom we are I like our chances

In the tournament I really do me too me too playing a lot of good basketball Frank talking about that Matt McMahon at LSU we have Coach John Brady on with us as well trying to get him on Monday or Tuesday thank you so much for hooking us

Up with him love that guy from FR France beard was on with him a couple of weeks ago that was a trip they’re both from mome Mississippi they’re both from mome yeah watch Friends watch John Brady play a 12-year-old uh baseball game when he was like he hit like a home Runner or

Something and actually wrote about it in the mome the mome paper John in the mome daily the daily fearian yeah well you know what is cool Frank is I is about these coaches and the salaries they make and Brendan and and Dave and Frank we know we didn’t start out making what we

Make now not that what we make now is anything but I mean I asked him I said coach put it let’s be completely you know transparent what were you making when you first started coaching he goes kind of embarrassed to say he goes I made $155,000 a year okay and and you

You remember remember when uh you you just think about these people say well these coaches can leave when they want they’ve earned it they’re 45 50 60 years old yeah you know we didn’t talk to our parent I still don’t to Bob and Shirley

89 and 95 I still don’t talk to them I mean or I’m not my dad May backhand me I’m worried about that but that’s why this nil thing the free market I say this over and over back in March of 2000 the NASDAQ was over 5,000 we were

Like you know this just doesn’t make any sense all of a sudden it’s at 1100 real fast yeah um you mentioned about Bill bichi and Dave you know this starting companies this guy was the hottest thing in pro football Nick sa the hottest thing in college football now they’re

Two old cots as they said they’re both out Dave Tomkins tell me why a team wouldn’t want to hire Bill bich oh wow um put me on the spot here but thank you um you know it’s it’s you separate bill bich from from Tom Brady um and then go

Back to when when when when Bill was at the at at the Cleveland Browns and that amazing staff that he he put together including Nick Sabin but but in more recently you separate him from from Tom Brady and the record the resume is not that strong and and you also have the

Fact that he’s 71 years old um Etc I think he really wants to coach again I think he really wants to win again I think he wants to get a team in the playoffs I think he can um but you know every every dog has it St as they say

And I I I think his record post Brady is just kind of turned everyone away yeah I mean Nick Sabin is having fun now he’s he’s only what 71 72 that guy could still play golf with rappers now down in South Florida yeah I mean 50

C is not a rapper anymore okay he’s a businessman all right okay okay okay all it right I mean but you think about 50 Cent did not graduate and probably get an NBA from college I don’t think he ever mentioned that he did but damn that

Guy’s smart and he’s the guy who will come and teach a class on entrepreneur ruralism Frank that’s what you are I mean I I can tell you we spend a lot of time in Atlanta and I wish I was in Atlanta to have you as a sponsor of the

Show but I’m glad I got you as a as a part of it you’re not just a guest you’re a part of it because Sidelines is a team effort it ain’t about me thank God we got Brendan now and Dave and but you’re you’re everywhere and Chuck

Oliver I love that guy and you talk about a great spokesman and anytime he he recently texted me and said hey I can come on tomorrow or Friday that was cool as hell I love that guy he’s the most genuine downto earth guy and he’s got an

Awesome show and you said you couldn’t find a better spokesman for your product that means I mean the Chuck Oliver show is a fabulous show he does a wonderful two-hour onean show and uh we had dinner the other night with Matt Moscone another Louisiana you know great guy and

My boy uh Ty graphin the voice of the PS and Chuck Oliver and I were all over at Crescent City stakes and you talk about some great stories and it was so funny the cook came out because he saw Matt mcone and he watches you know Matt on

His show you know and uh yeah and he goes and he goes uh he comes out he goes you Matt MUSC Matt goes well yes I am I I surely am he goes well I’m a big fan I’m a big fan so Matt took a picture

With him so as the night wore on you could tell this guy really probably should have been still in the rest trip but he was hanging on because he wanted to talk sports and he you could see him over the corner he was like chopping at

The bit he wanted to come over there and talk to us so bad so so Chuck invited come on hey come on come sit with us yeah so so it was so cool you know the guys that you see on TV or you you see on radio or on podcast We’re Just Sports

Guys right and so this guy was having a time of his life talking to M scota and Chuck and and then when he heard graph voice of the Bells voice of the Bells like he goes kind of almost turned to look at me like who the hell are you

Yeah well I mean here’s the thing let me say something real quick and I love that photo because you sent it to me um yeah Justin Ross just texted me this from The Vitamin Shop 5338 Goodman Road in Oli Branch Mississippi get out there today tomorrow every day uh January 29th

Owen Austin and Andrew first class proud to have him as a sponsor let’s bring in Jack Turner a uh milsaps graduate Alabama Hugo Black College of Law the Barrister and residence for Sidelines one of the most interesting people in the world along with some of the more interesting people in the world Jack

Appreciate you taking time from the Crone Law Firm one of the best firms in the country in Memphis Downtown on the river to make some sense because Dave Tompkins in the Low Country South Carolina Mountain Brook man Alabama grad West Point West Point graduate Bama fan for life NBA from Stanford Frank Duffy

Mr LSU Tiger Brendan Martin Florida Gator as it gets buddy Martin’s son our executive producer in Okala Florida make some sense out of this from the legal angle because you’ve earned it well yeah the state of Tennessee and the commonweal of Virginia filed a lawsuit against the NCAA this week and right now

As far as I know all we have is their complaint the NCA has not responded yet but uh they have found the NCA as a heel which is antitrust law you know years ago Jerry tartanian tried to attack the NCAA on uh due process grounds he said

They didn’t give you due process they were obligated to because they were private but most of their members were government entities state colleges and uh the N the court said nope they’re still a private organization they don’t have to respect your fifth amendment rights or Eighth Amendment rights they

Can torture you if they feel like it but dool which they do yeah frequently um and so that’s that was a fail line of attack but antitrust is what finally did it a few years ago Supreme Court handed down the Alon uh decision that uh opened

The door basically got rid of the uh the amateurism rules and so the NCAA is doing its best to stay relevant and trying to find ways they can still regulate college sports they would say not completely wrong try to restore or establish some sanity to the nil process but

Their rule is that um uh players can benefit from their name image likeness but uh they don’t want you going to a school just for that reason they’re going to pay you more it’s a little bit like a politician saying well you know I uh no I I don’t vote that way because

They give me money they give me money because I vote that way yeah uh and is the uh uh the plaintiffs Virginia and Tennessee say in this lawsuit that’s like saying you know okay Jack Turner you can go to any law firm you want to but you can’t discuss salary until after

You’ve agreed to take take the position and they say that’s an illegal restraint on trade we’ll find out what the ncaa’s argument is but that’s the just that’s the you know the guts of the lawsuit they’re saying that that rule and the NCA is still trying to enforce it

They’ve come down on Florida State over it they’ come down on Florida uh I haven’t seen I don’t know if they’ve actually made public what the notice of infractions is that they’ve just given to Tennessee if it’s related to this or something else yeah but uh this is the

Latest line of attack to get rid of whatever is left of the ncaa’s making Authority and and in typical and in typical fashion it’s selective outrage which is the maddening thing about all of it yeah oh absolutely and you know it’s for the NCAA to to do their Pearl

Clutching and uh you know and say we’re just here for the student athletes is pretty funny and they’ve always been very selective in how they enforce you know another one of your frequent guests told my dad once it’s you know the NCAA for years was completely dominated by

Big 10 people you ask go how state folks will say oh no no no it’s completely dominated by Michigan people that was running St but they got SEL yeah they’re selective in their outrage selective in their enforcement uh and that’s the problem they’ve got now is the only way

The NCAA could hang on to its Authority is if Congress were to step in and give them some kind of antitrust car V out and I don’t think the NCAA could get Congress to pass you know a resolution adopting the faor college motto knowledge is good at this point they

Congress hates them so no they’re this is kind of like the follow of Berlin Wall I could say they’ve got five more years where they’ll be governing college football I’d be pulling that number out of the out of thin air I don’t think they’ve got that I don’t think it’s I

Don’t think it’s anywhere close to five years yeah it’s it’s it’s 1986 uh in in Germany you know and and and we don’t know if it’s going to be an 89 or 90 or 91 or 87 but yeah it’s the fall of the Berlin Wall yeah and and the NCAA to me

Looks like U you know the old saying the rest spirator on the priest is in the room and they’re calling the relatives to come say goodbye because they’ve out kicked uh and outlived their relevance I mean and really that organization was started in 1906 remember the year a

Pivotal year and Tony Barnhart talks about it on the great documentary produced by our friend in Birmingham Norman jeffson and David Cruz they spent six years making it Swani 1899 unrivaled dorg go to that website order a copy of it it’ll restore your faith and make you understand why we love college football

And why we want to fight so hard to keep it as amateur as possible Jack you said one time something that really sticks with me you said I’m against anything that makes college sports more like Pro Sports I love Pro Sports but I want them

To be separate you know if I order a steak I don’t want you to bring me fried chicken or fish I ordered a damn steak and we need to keep look we get up at the crack Before Sunrise on college football Saturdays Sundays I love pro

Football but we’re we’re on the couch or in the chair dozing in and out of sleep Dave Tomkins you once told me that totally different feel totally different thing and you know I I like the PGA Tour a lot more than I like the NCAA but I

Think you know and and I’m I’m not for you know what Saudi Arabia does with the human rights and stuff like that but I think at the end of the day I think live is actually good for golf because it it it caused the PGA Tour to be shaken up to

Like relook at itself and what’s it going to be like going forward um I think we’re gonna have a bigger change agent in college sports and that’ll usurp the the NCAA I don’t know what what we don’t know what that is yet and we don’t know how what what it’s going

To be in you know in one year two years five years but something needs to change and um and I don’t I know I’m I’m I’m I’m a huge golf fan and um and I hated live when it came out but I now actually kind of like it because I’m like you

Know what golf needed a change agent and I think college sports needs a change agent well we we we flirted with congressional oversight but nothing has come of it um you know so we we’ve had that flirtation but you know and we and we even talked about having a zar of

College sports like a Nick Sabin have him step in and try and make heads or tals of it it’s the Wild Wild West and and to your point lawsuits are going to start flying back and forth because there’s too much money there’s too deep of pockets for it not to do so yeah

Right Jack Turner let’s ask you this you talk about the NCAA and again I’m not getting out of my Lane because you have a law degree from the Hugo black college of law in Tuscaloosa a proud graduate a school law it was for about 10 minutes

It was a Hugh Culver house the third School law but I love that that is true all right so Jack Jack you never went down on the strip and stayed out because you studied your ass off for three straight years but no to GL hey you gotta love

This guy and his family his mom his family is awesome Mary Elizabeth John they’re as good as it gets all out Al abama people but great people and I want to tell you something Jack explain to people because I have a text right now going your Barrister sir Jack Turner um

Says Anti-Trust laws a lot the NCAA I know this they don’t have subena power everything that they do is pretty much based on circumstantial evidence in a common court of law how would you get a conviction on a murder case without a body it’s very difficult so kind of talk

About the CA here’s another one Wesley Duncan down in Fort Lauderdale Florida watching uh down there I’m sure it’s 80 degrees and gorgeous down there he says then why don’t you fight to keep an amateur that’s the one thing the NCAA could do and I think people might rally behind

Them yeah you’re not wrong the problem is like I said the only way to do that would be for Congress to do it you know there is one sports related yeah there’s one sports related antitrust exemption uh uh or exemption in the antitrust laws and that’s baseball and the way that

Happened I remember I had a professor at Alabama Professor Norman singer he said that one of his professors at Harvard had clerked for one of the justices uh when baseball got its Anti-Trust exemption and he said he uh this professor when he was clerking could overhear the justices in their Chambers

Discussing it and the question was is it games or is it business and at the time back you know around the turn of the century those two were considered mutually exclusive and uh this professor said you know he could hear one of the justices pounding the

Table did I’ve seen it in its GES and then later told this clerk you know Justice Frankford made a very interesting point but that’s how baseball got that the only and it’s never been never been gotten rid of Congress has said if the Supreme Court wants to get rid of it

They can the Supreme Court has said if Congress wants to change it they can but nobody will that they just want to kick the ball to the other side the only way to keep it amateur at this point is for Congress to pass an exemption to the cherman Antitrust Act that keeps it

Amateur gives the authority to do this override they can override state law on this it’s interstate commerce uh but I do not see Congress doing it because then you get accused of all these poor young men you’re trying to keep them you know working for free and that’s unfair

And unjust so I I don’t think this Genie they can’t eliminate it but they certainly can regulate it and that’s what needs to be done I mean we’re not going to be able to put the Gen back in the bottle but you can try and Corral

This wild wild west that it you know I mean it’s just it’s it’s all I mean and look it’s it’s as faral as we used to have when we used to bring them the briefcases full of cash to the holiday in on you know on on the western side of

Mississippi to pay for Gary James to come to LSU from West I mean we’ve all heard the stories oh yeah you know and so and so it’s it’s it’s it’s nonsensical and so either we Mor this thing or guess what you get what you get you get what you deserve because that’s

Where this thing’s headed yeah and this and look I hate to keep singing the Praises of my former coach Nick Sabin but he was exactly right when he said you guys are opening up Pandora’s box and it is gonna it is you’re not gonna recognize it and look three years into

This damn thing look at the changes there’s things we’re doing now we never thought would happen it literally is pay for play right now you can hire college football players period yeah and to hear these to hear these people say they can’t get paid until they get to school

I mean look I was born in the afternoon but not this afternoon not this afternoon yeah and and Dave let me throw something at Dave you’re in the Venture Capital startups you know you you’ve you are you spent 17 years out in Palo Alto got your NBA at Stanford but you got

Your real education in my my opinion growing up with a great mom and dad knowing Bo shim Beckler in Mountain Brook but at West Point the Black Knights of the Hudson I mean that’s where you really probably learn more than anything because that was pure

Amateurism and where I see a sh that and sitting across a wall from about 50 divisions of Soviet tanks yeah when you lived in Kaiser sliding over there yeah my my my senior year um we went 83 and one in football um our our our one we we tied Tennessee in nen

Stadium and and had the ball to win and should have won um made a couple stupid play uh play calls that would would have gotten us otherwise got us in field goal range we’d have won that game so we would have been uh what whatever would

Have been nine and three uh went to our first bowl game ever beat Michigan State in in in in our bowl game I knew every player on that team yeah you know I went to class with them I I trained with them in the and milit you know I saw what

They did with their careers none of them went to the NFL they all went and you know did you know they some of them served and became General some did like I did and did five years and became a you know got a law degree or an NBA or

Whatever but I saw what they did with you know with the rest of their lives all of them you know one or two exceptions but but but all of them winners and you know they learned and it was such a it was such an honor to to be

Around them I I remember the week of of the Tennessee game and and the team’s about to go down to to to Knoxville and they’re like Tennessee has no idea how good we are they they don’t understand we’re gonna surprise the [ __ ] out of them and we might just beat them and we

Were like I don’t know 30o underdogs or something like that and that was I mean that was the coolest year of my life uh the coolest season of my life to to to be you know you know living next door to to to these to these football players

And and and and experiencing greatness and I mean we were out and I mean on either side of the line of scrimmage they you know the teams were 30 40 pounds bigger um but boy we had a lot of we had a lot of grit we had a lot of

Moxy and we had a lot of confidence and that that all those you know human values continued you know extended on to to the rest of you know of their lives and it was what an honor that was I I that’s probably my happiest moment or or

Season or whatever of of my Lifetime well I’ll say this that exactly what you said you spent I didn’t talk about this but I was in Europe when you were over there I didn’t know you then but you were in like I believe Kaiser schiding deploying cruise missiles and I can

Remember the summer of 1986 I was still in college at Auburn uh going all over Europe and one time getting dropped off at 3:30 in the morning in Rome i’ taken a train from Florence and I was by myself at the time my buddies I’d been with had gone back to Washington to

Intern for an Alabama senator for Hal hefley and uh who looked like Mr Haney from Green Acres every time I’d see him in the every time I’d see him in the halls in the Congress I’d yell War Eagle to him he turned around he go War Eagle yes

Sir yes sir by the way he’s still in the Senate it’s Senator Kennedy from Louisiana that’s right was it how Hein or was it fog horn leorn it was both but but I remember being dropped off in Europe in August of 1986 3:30 in the morning I got off the

Train downtown Rome I had never been to Rome but my parents said boy first time you’ve been over there you’ll go back but make sure you go to the Spanish Steps well I get off a train at 3:30 in the morning and I have no idea where I

Am and I get dropped off and I’m like all right I got to figure this out and it’ll be light in three hours I run into a South African and the United States Marine on 30-day leave and the three of us just sat there and laid out kind of

Asleep and they said watch out for these you know robbers and thieves coming up around you and we did it and of course I got up as soon as you know the light got up went down to the Spanish Steps to the American Express office and ended up at

The US Embassy in Via vitorio venzo in Rome and I’m in line to go in there because I need to get a wire of some money you know I’m I’m got about $20 left and so I’m there in line and there AR armored personnel carriers and tanks

Around the US Embassy and you get in that line and this tells you while today is Veterans Day for the hunters in Arkansas in a lot of states and youth day but I was It was kind of scary you know but I get in line the guy checks me

Out and then he goes hey dude we’re having a keg party tonight with a band if you want to come hang out with us it was a marine I like those are the most you talk about heroes when my kids Wilson and Max July 4th 2010 Marcus

Latrell was given a speech at Patriot lake at Shelby Farms in Memphis and afterwards we went back in the room because being a TV reporter I knew they had like a VIP room I just went back in there and here comes Marcus it’s just Marcus Wilson Max and me and I said boys

He doesn’t slam dunk a basketball he doesn’t throw or hit home runs and he doesn’t score touchdowns but this guy right here is the first time you’ve met a real genuine authentic American hero who would lay it down for you know his country if he had to in and you you

Heard his story shake his hand and and Marcus Latrell looked at me kind of like man I don’t know what to say I said well thank you and and he’s a very emotional guy and my kids I got a picture with them and they’re pretty small you know

But when you travel around the world and Dave you know this a second buy their dinner buy their drinks hug them tell them thank you because you don’t they don’t make people like this every day and we’re blessed to have but we’re going we’re going to fix college and Brendan’s going to talk

About it in a second about a new committee but Dave respond to that because you you live in Europe it’s scary yeah so so my you know I see my all over the uh the feed here and he talks about his meeting loss in East

Berlin so um if you ever want to see a movie that that really captures what it was like back then see the movie the lives of others it’s a German movie it’s it’s one of my top five favorite movies of all time and it really it really shows what life

Was like in East Berlin back then and um what the the the coolest experience I ever had in East Berlin um you know we we’d go over there and and just see it and stuff and that’s the historical part of Berlin and it’s behind the Berlin

Wall and then we’d go have a meal in East Berlin before we’d have to to go back and we had to be in our uniforms to to to to go over there and so we’d always be eating in this nice place I mean you this Sumptuous like seven course meal for like $5

In East Berlin and there’d always be Soviet officers there you know and and all a sudden we start you know passing drinks back and forth to each other and you saw this Co you know Brotherhood develop between you know enemies basically you know the American officers and the Soviet officers and and this

Happened I don’t know four or five times in in my three years in in in you know serving in Germany and every time the the I this I’ll tear up talking about this but every time the the the lead Soviet officer would would would would

Come over to us and say can you sneak us back on the other side of the wall can you can you can you free us wow and I’m like man we got this I mean there’s no I don’t care about nuclear weapons and chemical weapons and Reagan and gorbage

Off or whatever I mean we got this I mean that we we’re gonna win this war and that was at the most visceral level yeah just can you can c can you can can you get us over there and they would point to the west and and that that was

I don’t know that’s that’s that’s why you knew their their ideology was vacant yeah every every American needs to know that I mean every American every American needs to read the Constitution and they need to know that right there absolutely yeah totally that that I have never heard anybody say it like that

Before Dave that’s that’s uh powerful Frank and and there’s no more pride in being an American than when you’re overseas oh yeah that that is when you are most prideful as being American is when you’re out of this country yeah one more story if I could I I I you got me

I’m on on a roll here um so in my last years in San Francisco I I I dated a a a a woman from um from from Russia and she was actually on the Soviet gymnastics team so she’s pretty famous um you know Russian lady and she escaped so she she

Basically and she landed in San Francisco um with 18 in her pocket I mean having escaped from the Soviet Union and and and she is a wonderful it executive uh when Wells Fargo bought wacovia she led the whole it integration of it I mean brilliant woman and I remember in

2004 I I took her to Berlin and so you know Berlin long time since the walls falling stuff and we went to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum and we we’re looking over you know what was the wall and she looked over I’m about to start crying um she just started balling in

Tears I mean I’m like she all a sudden she was back but that’s where she was and and and she was able to you know you know basically get around that wall and and find Freedom and I mean you know we have our problems in Texas and I’m so

For you know locking up the border and stuff but that’s that’s an example of immigration that works and and and and her name is Lena and Lena is a true American and that’s uh well it’s like people say about people will tell you in the Catholic Church the greatest some of the

Greatest Catholics are the converts from other denominations the people that come here from abroad appreciate this country more than a lot of Americans do and Dave you lived it I saw it uh it was real and but when you Frank’s right when you travel abroad and you hear someone

Talking about America in a derogatory manner you’re ready to fight I’m sorry in the SEC I’ll even stand up for every school in this conference when they’re talking about my conference because that’s like saying I got ugly children and I don’t but you know what I’m saying uh Jack almost every school

That’s right look Jack Jack Turner Barrister in Residence I’m gonna throw this one Brendan’s got an announcement about a new committee that’s been formed formed and I got this text from him and Brendan bring this up now and then I want the barister to respond but Brendan

This is huge news and I hope it works out yeah um you know you know I I’m down here I own gatorbait magazine and gatorbait media with my father buddy Martin uh we also have buddy Martin Show which you know we’re all kind of joining one big family right now with uh Rob

Brown and obviously here and so I I keep a we have a large chat going all the time and it’s like I wish I could post the chat because it’s like some of the greatest Minds in sports that I sit around it’s on Signal chat and we have

Like six or seven of anyways Buddy’s on there last night he post and I saw this come through um and I’m running a ticker right now is the Big 10 uh buddy my father buddy Martin said this out last night uh actually copy and paste it I’m

Sure but the Big 10 in the SDC announced Friday the formation of a joint Advisory Group that will be made up of the University presidents and athletic directors it will discuss recent Court decisions spending litigation government’s proposals and state laws the goal the league said is to quote take leadership role and developing

Solutions for sustainable growth of college sports so there you go the big 10 in the SEC now two of the biggest you know of super you know conferences in America getting together to basically you know say SC and NCAA and you know inform you know superconference or

Whatever they’re going to do but now you know I’d like to hear the reaction here to this panel to to that announcement Jack Jack take the lead on that one Jack and all I’m gonna say is we my dad’s always taught me if you’re gonna raise hell and [ __ ] and moan about something

You go before a committee don’t go in there bitching and moaning and raising hell go in there with a solution or a number of solution absolutely absolutely now I will say this is uh a lot of folks in uh on the west coast can tell you Big

10 can be trusted exactly as far as its interest go and not one inch further but the well but that being said yeah they and the SEC definitely have an interest in trying to establish some kind of control over this and I will also say what the NCA cannot do those

Two conferences probably can do they are politically powerful in their footprint in their state yeah and uh could probably convince Congress to uh adopt some kind of framework or allow the adoption of a framework I think like I said it would just take not necessarily a detailed law from Congress saying what

Can and can’t be done but to create exemption in the antitrust laws that would allow the NCA or its successor um I don’t think the NCA is on its deathbed it’s just about to have its legs amputated though I mean somebody have to organize the women’s volleyball

Tournament and all that but uh their days of regulating college football are you know are numbered but the SEC and the Big 10 are we seem to be heading towards a situation where those may be the last two conferences left uh and uh but they

Are the ones who are in a position to do this yeah I think it’s actually a good idea also Dave goodbye Lennon another one of my favorite movies oh I love that movie fantastic Well Jack tell them about your deal you’re married to a woman from Romania and uh beautiful uh lavenia

Dumat is that the correct way to say it that is closer than any Americans ever come d very good gorgeous woman Dave by the way I don’t know what they’ got in the water over there man I mean beautiful oh there’s oh oh my goodness Eastern Eastern Europe is is Talent Central I

Mean it is it is it is amazing but they are the also I tell you I get to Bucharest the woman who stamped my passport could have been a superm model over here yeah and Eastern Europe is in in many ways more American than the United

States right now I mean they are they I mean that is a I mean do yourself a favor and go on vacation you know Skip London and Paris this year and go to Budapest go to Bucharest go to Prague uh go to Warsaw I mean Warsaw is the most

Inspirational place in the world in my opinion have 24hour layover there uh misconnection and boy it is a gorgeous City yeah it really is yeah Europe is more affordable than Western Europe yeah beautiful people beautiful places especially once you get out in the countryside away from the you know some

Of the towns the Communists destroyed a lot of the old villages are you know gorgeous and the people are great Romania particularly they really they’re friendly they like Americans a lot uh yeah definitely do and they have American values I mean that I I I like

Like Poland is to me when I want inspiration I go to Poland and it’s just it’s just it’s it’s more America than America in my opinion well father Herbert a Catholic priest at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Auburn told me about six years ago um he was this

Was in 2017 my son was at mass that day with his Sigman new pledge Brothers at Auburn and uh he said I said where are you from he said I’m from Poland and so he was 31 years old and I started doing the math and he said in

1986 1 million polls locked arms around the entire country’s borders in solidarity and prayer Pope John Paul II was from Poland and in prayer and he goes I was born 31 years later I said you are an inspirational man I mean cuz I I tell you true story about me October

1962 my parents were on the way back from an AIA convention in Washington DC and everyone was told in October of 62 get off the road take cover sure it’s called the Cuban Missile Crisis right 101st Airborne had been deployed in Clarksville Tennessee where my brother-in-law Kurt ham lives who’s done

Seven combat tours as a marine and is the most humble genuine nice guy you will ever meet in your life but he’s a United States Marine and I mean they were deployed ready to go and so they took cover in Marysville Tennessee it was the weekend of the Tennessee Alabama

Game you couldn’t get a hotel and nine months later I was born so I was inspired by the Missile Crisis maybe that’s why I’m so wound up but when you go to Warsaw um it was 89% r reiz during World War II U I mean it was completely

Reed and it’s actually one of America’s darkest we turned our back on them and in in in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 but you go back there and you go to the Old Town of Warsaw oh wow these buildings are great they’ve been around for centuries no they have not they were all

Built post 1945 not by the Soviets but by the private citizens of Poland with their own money you know and their you know $100 a year that they were making just that they they restored the old town with their with their I mean you talk about Sweat Equity and you go there

And you learn that story and and and you’re like man this is if you’re not fired up now and if you don’t believe in American values and what America’s promise is yeah you see it right there so I’ll I’ll I’ll get off my bandwagon now you’re not and I’ll tell you

Something Joe evangelisti told me one night at St Louis he said the Catholic church and and people and and organizations are most often at their best when they’re being persecuted the most and the most pro-american people I agree with you are the polls we have 72,000 troops in Germany we almost moved

Them to Poland and they want us they want Americans but you’re right the people who have been without suffered the most that’s what this this ties into sports and I’ll just say this and and Frank everybody jump in whenever this is Round Table okay but I will say this

That news about the Big 10 in the SEC the great Sports writers like buddy Martin who is still turning out great work Fram beard Tony barnhard these guys aren’t old okay you’re old if you think you are we better be getting after it okay Frank you’re as passionate as it

Gets but you’re about to be potentially one of the voices of Auburn baseball games when they need you and you’re as LSU as it gets that’s what we got to do we got to remember you can’t be myopic and focus just on your school it’s bigger than that we need college sports

Because it gets people together but it teaches the lessons of life if you pay people before they do the job how many times did your dad say can I get an advance on my allowance the last time I did it you didn’t do any work I ain’t

Gonna go there Frank yeah I’m I’m one case of laryngitis away from calling the game for our good buddy Butch Thompson which I am looking forward that is the quote of the day I wanted to I wanted to address a group because I I think I found this

Interesting because I talk about this subject I mean I I do this podcast with uh you know we you know Monday through Saturday and then I’m on the Buddy Martin Show most nights which is on uh you know uh uh 9 to 10 pm so you know

This obviously this topic with a myriad of guests with all sorts of really smart people uh uh you know both inside NCAA outside Sports Riders everything else and there was an interesting point that was brought up the other day but not interesting was talking to Tony barnhard after he was on the show

Earlier and then he was on buddy show uh and and you know he sort of reiterated the fact it’s like you know when we start really considering walking this back right that and we’re talking about the nil um and we’re talking about we’re gonna the athletes are being

Contacted now in high school okay so so now they’re going to be they’re they’re going to NL is not going to reach down into high school okay so that’s a whole another level like NCAA doesn’t go to high school but now the N like it’s like

Not you know quote unquote the nil but now they’re able to you know get money and get paid in high school these things start to change and I know there’s all sorts of different issues and everything else but but these kids are you know it’s going to start going you know

Getting further and further getting younger and younger it’s a slippery slope and it’s a slippery slope because you’re right and so it it sort of you know it’s not just college football now now we’re talking about changing the entire sport from when you’re you know a

Young kid you know eight nine years old stopping on your first helmet and get your first parac cleet by the way my father did write an article about buying my first parac clees when I was nine years old and I couldn’t find right field and he said oh and he wrote an

Article about the in the newspaper the next day it says Dad where’s right field and can I wear my cleats tomorrow to school you know so you know but those kind of things it’s like we immediately gut what sports is about what we learn as a child

About a teammate about being a player about earning your right about about you know going out there and hitting ground you know taking ground ball and ground after ground ball getting bruises on your knees you know running wind Sprints in the middle of the snow vomiting

Because you you know you wanted to get better to to to you know be the starting tight end you know uh and it goes on and on and my my daughter’s a a you know we do travel soccer she’s in Premier travel soccer here in okal Florida she’s 11

Years old I mean God they know more about soccer than I knew a lot of high school people did you know because they you know they I mean it’s like that feels like you know what they do out there is like they got uniforms for

Practice for God’s sakes I I wow yeah oh yeah yeah blue blue Wednesdays you know great Thursdays they track three days a week and we got we go on Dad right under check oh yeah no kidding and you know we we’ll start tournaments here you know

Soon you guys will see me doing shows from middle of soccer fields probably once or twice through the end of the year because we’ll be doing you know we’ll be doing tournaments but the the whole point of it is that you know that all goes away you know if we start

Worrying about teaching our kids that this is just about the money just about ear it’s just about oh I want to get uh you know Fredo on my freaking shirt or n shoes and you know because I get paid because they’re seeing that [ __ ] every day on YouTube

Every single day where they like well if I can get enough videos we do I get paid it’s the mindset and it’s mind screwed up that we are doing this to to kids because College athletes are children they’re not they’re I mean they’re adults but they’re barely adults

And they’re coming from a really coddled space especially the good ones and there you know what what are we teaching them and what are we building in America what happen bu what are we doing yeah we’re breaking because our leaders come from this spot most of our leaders come from

This area well and so what what are we doing what are we doing and and so I say cherish today I mean like look at today noon today St John’s Yukon Madison Square Garden Rick patino Danny Hurley I mean it doesn’t get any better than that I mean some back alley fight between

Rick matino and Danny Eary who wins who wins between Danny Hurley and Bobby Hurley who wins between the Hurley brothers and and their and their dad probably the dad in in a fist fight so you got that you got Carolina Duke in the dean you got all these great SEC

Games today you got Kansas Houston and Allen Fieldhouse I mean this is this is it’s it’s sort of that like that first little sneak preview of March and so today is really special and I just encourage all the kids and all the adults like like like let’s let’s

Why do we really love the sport that is college basketball it’s because of these games and it’s not because of the money it’s great points man and 99.9% of the people that you’re gonna be watching play today will never see the light of the day in NBA they’re doing it for the

Love of the Game yeah I back in 2009 when uh uh Alabama beat Florida in the NCA or the SEC Championship yeah a Tennessee fan I knew sent out a you know email he was making in front of Tim TBO for crying on the sidelines and I said

Tony you have got it completely wrong that is what makes this game great if you watch an NFL game you see you know look looking at the sidelines you have no idea who’s winning who’s losing get paid it’s a job and they just don’t care that much yeah but Tim Teo loved Florida

And he yeah he put his heart into that game and so many of those players were the same way yeah sure some were getting paid but those those are the kids who grew up you know with the EMT Smith poster on their wall the Bear Bryant

Picture on their wall wanted to play for their school poured their guts into it and that’s what made the game so special and yeah we’re gonna lose that with during the Army Navy game when the game’s over they do the alma moders and and watch the losing you know the losing

Team sings first and watch the losing team sing their Alam Mater every player is crying every single player is crying I was I sorry Rob I was in uh the press conference when TBO walked out for the for the promise we all know what the promise is oh yeah right yeah so I’ve

Been there like I you know have the whole the whole stadium shocked right oh I mean like everyone’s like in shock like I’m in shocked like TBO didn’t win Superman didn’t rise up and it’s like the middle of the Superman movie right because you’re like oh Superman’s got K

The cryptonight what’s gonna happen right and so we all go we run into the locker room and I’ll never forget I mean there was but a handful of reporters in there because he he was he came out quick and we run into the locker room

And we walk out and and I happen to be I I just got in there set up my tripod camera all this crap because I shoot video and stuff and I I get my tri I get it set up and like the the doors open up and it felt like super food Superman

Walks into the room it’s like and he like walks in but it was like he gets up there and and you you see him fighting it off right you seeing a fight and I remember I zoom in my camera camera because at the end of it

I’m like he’s going to cry like don’t cry Timmy don’t cry to me you don’t want to and it’s cringy right you don’t want him to cry you don’t want him and he’s so right there you know and I promise I’m play harder than my team and he goes

On you know and then he doesn’t but he he like sheds one tear and then he walks off you know blows out of the room and you think sh he’s just ruined it like you know he like he just did the thing you don’t do I promise anything yeah you

Don’t say that on camera and so to see him like do that you know and and witness that that’s the kind of stuff that like I mean that’s that literally stuff that dreams are made of you know that that probably why DJ lagway is going to school there Mr Tex you know Mr

Texas football it’s probably why these guys because they want to live in that Legacy and we are that’s all gonna go away now well we we better fight for it I’m I’m going to play I’m G to play you 34 seconds why college football teaches the lessons of life and why this stuff

Connects us you remember this one I love this there going to be a lot of days when you lay your guts on the line and you come away empty-handed ain’t a damn thing you can do about it but go back and lay them on the line again and again and again

Manager glad to be associated with you you’ll keep fighting like you did today you keep playing like yet yeah we build a foundation that we can live a long long time on it all well could you hear that oh yeah okay well here’s the point I think I think the

Thing that we we learned from that is these coaches put their lives into it I mean they weren’t making they were making great money but you know you well I always tell people this after a football game you pick the stadium you stand outside the locker room and you watch those

College football players and coaches come out and every one of them they might have a Chick-fil-A you know dinner box you know but they’re walking out win or lose and especially after a loss who’s there to meet them it ain’t really it it’s the families it’s their High School coaches guidance counselors maybe

Their priest or Pastor from their Hometown but they back my parents taught me that as a kid after the game especially after loss to get autographs and chin straps and wristbands I’ll never forget Wilson and Max and hle and I going out there after uh 2009 Jean

Shik’s first game at Auburn Wilson knew Darren Bates uh defensive back for Auburn uh from Christian Brothers High School and when uh debates came out he’s looked at Wilson go what’s up Red Man and gave him a hug and gave him some wristbands and a chin strap I mean that

Gives me chills thinking about I also have a picture of Wilson with Philip Luton kirkin uh November 19th 2011 after the Samford game and I just I get chill thinking about that I showed that to Philip’s dad I mean that’s what connects us to college football Brendan Dave Jack

Uh Frank I mean Jack’s dad John I love him like a father he’s unbelievable how passionate he is about Alabama but half of his family’s Auburn people that’s what’s so funny about it so he’s the fact that we care is why we’re gonna we’re going to fix this I’m making

A promise right now we’ll fix it and the NCAA will be kicked to the curb but all this talk today has been priceless because it’s the connection with history people who often don’t have anything are the most grateful ones you’ll find the next step in college athletics is we get

A commissioner he’ll make it rick neisel get I mean you know Steve spur Urban Meyer I mean what we’ve got to have leadership when you have a leadership vacuum crazy stuff happens and that’s where we are right now so let’s bounce it around here Brendan you said maybe

Later in mid to late April Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer are gonna have a symposium on how much they hate losing at Spur’s restaurant in Gainsville I want to do the show there I want to be there because I hate losing but I ain’t

Urban Meer or St SP hope to let me in I was looking for some of the quotes a second ago because I trying to find because we do a podcast and if you guys ever get a chance you know it’s on it’s on the same channel there’s a there’s a

Podcast playlist called best Fridays in football it’s Urban Meyer my father and myself and it’s probably the most it’s probably the most underrated sort of football podcast you can you can hear it’s 30 minutes of like gold of from Urban Meyer telling you stuff that he doesn’t say really anywhere else and

It’s really great but along the lines this is all through the football season we do it most football season he comes on on Fridays and uh and it’s his name by the way because that’s what you know be best Fridays in football so uh but you

Know it’s uh he he and and and and Steve Spurrier because coach you know Urban still has a place you know down south in Sarasota he still comes up to Florida he’s still involved uh obviously he’s still around he does Gator groups you know all that stuff in Gainesville so

Him and Co him and spur have gotten to be close uh they basically I think my dad was a conduit for some for a lot of it but he they they want to do get together a talk about how much they hate to lose like seriously that’s

The whole basis is that they how much both of them hate to lose so much that they that they’re physically sick over it like they can’t like you know and and they they want they’re B they’re going to get together and do this conversation and they’re not out in Billy apier or

Trying to come out against anybody but they want to do a talk at spers restaurant here it’s got a great restaurant called spers grid iron grill and in Gainesville great spot and it’s like a it’s like a museum all of Steve spurrier’s life you know when you walk

In it’s fantastic and and it’s great food but they’re they’re goingon to do it there and they’re G to have uh you know and and Buddy and I hopefully we’re trying to put it together but that’s what the whole thing’s about it’s just hating to lose hating like to lose at

All because those both of those guys had teams that shouldn’t have won that’s how they got to be a Florida you know head coach and and I’ve interviewed both of them and talking about you know people don’t know when Spurrier went to Duke everyone told him not to go to Duke

They’re like you’re gonna lose this will be the end of your career and he says I’m screw you I’m gonna go win you know Urban Meyer made a living with Dan Mullen off the spread option because he knew that he could beat you even when he didn’t have the best Personnel on the

Field and and it really just it’s such a fascinating sort of conversation that’s going to go on hopefully we’ll live stream it and Rob of course you’ll be there so uh yeah anyway that’s that’s when you can put when you can put Utah football and Duke football on the map

You’ve done something you really exactly Frank that is that is so to the point amen you you got to conceive it believe it and achieve it like I said Jack you know every time you go on a courtroom you know you’re going to win the case don’t

You wait wait a minute now that would would love to hear a good lawyer answer [Laughter] that hey guys hey guys bu people take care thank you all right see you guys see you next week see you now I tell you it’s uh jumping back to what you about spur and and urban

Meer yeah it’s like coach briyan said son I could have won it William and Mary yeah one thing I make sure I always tell my clients is I guarantee no outcome anybody who can he’s buying the he’s paying off JS yeah which I don’t do yeah well and and I think this

Discussion like he’s talking about with Urban Meyer um 187 and 32 I mean what is Steve sper at Florida 121 and 27 or something like that you think it’s any accident these type A personalities um I love the book uh you know after the arena coach D talks about

I like to stand in the back field at practice every day and watch the body language of my quarterbacks my quarterbacks are not allowed to have a negative thought run through their mind Dave Tomkins uh what lesson did you learn from the moment you stepped on campus at West Point that sticks with

You today leadership um and you know tonight uh I think I say a lot on the show Kimberly’s North Carolina grad so of course we’re M glued to the Carolina Duke game and in the dean Dome we all leadership and race okay so Hubert Davis

Was not a race hire he was a merit hire he he was he he was hired because he played for Coach Smith because he he coached under coach Williams and he was the best man for the job flip side to to Duke John Shire was a merit hire you

Could have picked Johnny Dawkins you know know he was the first an africanamerican play for Coach K you know both both schools had a search committee of probably one we we know D search committee was one it was Coach K um at North Carolina it was a small

Group they were Merit hires and how do you extend the tradition of Dean Smith and Roy Williams you extend it through Hubert Davis how do you extend the tradition of of Coach K you do it through John shy the Jewish Jordan uh he he I think he played on the only all

Jewish starting five that won a state uh champ ionship in Illinois and and and and and and that’s just meritocracy and let’s let’s simplify things let’s dumb them down and and and make it about leadership and meritocracy and I will celebrate that tonight uh in the Carolina Duke game

With with with the two head coaches um that that you know succeeded the Legends well bottom line is you’re talking about these college basketball games Carolina Duke uh today you know St John and the game in Madison Square Garden alone that’s huge because we remember luk carosa Ry mamino John

Thompson Jim beheim all these great coaches PJ carlesimo I mean that draws us to TV is these guys that grew up in Brooklyn uh the King of Queens the Jerry Stiller by the way one of the funniest human beings ever to live if every if

You’re G to have an in-law live with you in your basement it’s got to be Jerry Stiller that guy I mean’s priceless priceless and then and if you got a wife like Leah reminy you know every day is a great day but anyway um Jack and and you know as the

Barrister I love what Dave just said it’s the more you know about the history of what you care about the harder you’ll fight for it that’s why fraternities are so strong history Traditions Heroes you learn I mean all the lessons I learned in college there were two great ones I

Learned one of them honestly was at 7:15 West Magnolia my pledge trainer Phil Thompson I love that guy he’s a great lawyer in in in in Auburn and he said of our pledge class of about 50 guys he said I’m gonna tell y’all something right now all 50 of y’all depend on one

Person and we were like what he goes if one of you screws up we hold you back a week it’s how it was you’re only as strong as your weakest link the other one was going to see Dr Richardson the head of the College of liberal arts and

Communications my Dean on the eighth floor before cell phones I called my mother and I said I’m gonna take the elevator I don’t know why that came up God looking out for me and she goes no take the stairs I go why it’s eight floors she goes you’ll learn and

Remember what it took to get to the top nothing on the top of anything but you tell your kids that every day anything worth having is worth fighting for and I’m G to tell you what you’ve seen him on this show uh Oakley mcfarren up in

Nashville one of our young kids and uh he’s he’s working his tail off up there to to to go to Auburn next year and that kid will remind you there’s these young 17 18 year olds there are a lot of great ones out there that are passionate win

Or lose they love their school and they know the roster that’s what we got to get back to to where you can remember that document where Payton Manning is going you know I used to listen to my dad’s old tapes of the games you know Manning at left guard

Jack Turner from Columbus Mississippi at a Right Guard Dave Tomkins from mome Mississippi and by you you learned that and that’s why it’s Savant Saturday I’ll be I mean we are you know my people go how do you remember that stuff it’s because I studied it and my whole room

As a kid I still have pet you know we lost Terry Beasley this week I mean number 88 God’s receiver I mean he did that everybody did that when they caught the ball and then you think Jack and Dave y’all are Alabama guys Friday before Pat Sullivan died he died

December 1st that morning 2019 that Friday guess who went and visited with him all afternoon Johnny muso so you can talk about these rivalries all you want but there’s respect and we learned it during the pandemic you can hate all you want which is not a virtue it’s not

Anything thing I believe in I’ll just love my school I want to beat you you win the rest of them just let me beat you whenever we play you that’s a convenient marriage but that’s what makes this who was the first to help after the tornado in Tuscaloosa the Auburn football team

And and Dr Waller May and Guy May the May veter clinic in Tuscaloosa as fine of people as you’ll ever meet the May family in your life 95% of their clients are Alabama People okay they you’re right that’s the state of Alabama okay that’s that’s the people in

Our listening audience the people in Florida when there’s a hurricane down there you ain’t gonna get finer people in America and uh than the Florida Panhandle I mean just sorry the cjun Navy that’s our list Earth they are the salt of the earth everybody it’s just I right I don’t

Recommend exercising very often but uh jumping back a little bit Rob it is so important to know your own history history I was a history major in college it’s what I love if I were independently wealthy I’d be teaching it somewhere uh instead of stressing myself out

Practicing law but uh yes yesterday I was on Facebook and saw in a couple of different forums people discussing changing the name of Bryant Denny Stadium and you had a few people saying well I just saw to be Bryant sa Stadium I don’t know who George Denny is

Actually I don’t know who Denny is dropped that well I gave him a history lesson I said if you enjoy watching Alabama football we have George Hutchinson Denny to thank for it he was president of the university and back in the 20s he was the one who saw we were a

Poor State we don’t have a lot of money to spend on education football is a way to gain national attention he hired Wallace Wade 1925 rosebowl was the very first time that any southern team had played there Alabama became the first team out of the South to become a

National Power he hired Frank Thomas uh you know we got statues of both because they both won national championships bear Bry would never have been there had it not been for Dr Denny and uh those ties he made uh so the stupidity of it

And I’m all for if you want to call it Bryant Denny Sav Stadium or Nick Sav field at Bryant Denny but yeah if you don’t know your own history you don’t really appreciate what it is you have and you won’t it yeah well Mama would have never called Coach Bryan

Home right he G to Arkansas he might have gone to Texas you know we’d be South Carolina well coach coach Bryant had had crossed coach Bryant had crossed the bridge in Memphis into Arkansas Sunday morning 7 December 1941 news broke my dad remembers as a 13-year-old kid coming home from church

All over the news this just in Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor and more on the story later he turned around I believe around Forest City and went back I believe he was on his way to interview for the head football coaching job at the University of Arkansas and you think

About it the people Jan hair Stadium when George Wallace then governor of Alabama in 1973 was out there in a wheelchair before Auburn played Old Miss they won that game 14 to7 um he said that he goes Cliff hair Stadium shall be renamed the Jordan hair stadium and he

Was the first active football coach to ever have a stadium with his name on it okay Clifford looy hair oh my God and you know Cliff hair in Auburn Legacy is gold Ralph Suge Jordan from Selma Alabama born September 25th 1910 these people and and Dr Denny by

The way at Alabama during the Depression had a bunch of kids from that didn’t get into Ivy League schools because Alabama had the first accredited college of business in the Deep South along with tane that’s where that started you can you you can if you try to ignore what

Did Bobby louder say those who drank from the well need to remember those who dug The Well Jack you just nailed it I know we went a bit long but the history the Traditions the heroes without these people before us we’re done we’re just we you You’ got to remember that and

That’s i’ said that’s the mission of Sidelines but anyway everybody close out uh it is though and that it’s true because I I was looking for the text that you and I had written each other in December when we were talking about what we were doing yeah and I think we we

We’re not joking around when we said this because we didn’t know we I mean we’ll tell more about another time but we really didn’t know it was just an idea you know we didn’t we didn’t have any investors we didn’t we we we thought maybe you know whatever we have

Obviously we have the most you know we’re that’s a whole another deal but and we’re grateful for all those things but we you know we we didn’t say this was about money we you know we said yeah this going to be a lot of work we’re

Gonna have to do extra stuff but the whole concept of sideline Sports Network you know is what was about to come in and say look somebody’s got to be a voice of reason here Rob this this is go we we said this is I said Rob this is

About to go off the rails yeah I said the transfer Portal’s gonna be open soon and it’s gonna go off the rails it’s gonna go crazy everything’s going to go nuts people don’t understand what’s about to happen everything’s going to come apart at the scams I was like the

South needs to save college football I said I said we need to come from the south I said we got to talk about how we can save college football Poe values and things we need to do something about this Rob and we you know Rob and I are

Geeks that way so I want to thank I wan to thank I want to thank both you Rob and Brendan um this show is really the antibody for what’s wrong um in college football but what’s wrong in America and I I want to thank seriously from the

Bottom of my heart I want to thank the to both of you guys for what you’re doing it’s it’s an absolute honor to be on this show well well let me tell you something and thank you so much but it it it’s a team effort and it is not

About any individual again I want to get the transcript of Pat Sullivan’s acceptance speech for the Heisman Trophy 1971 but that’s how you do it and thank God for those hard ass coaches and teachers that you have in your life because they’re the only ones that

You’re ever going to go back and hug 20 30 40 years later Jack your law professors that you had that pushed you you know what I’m talking about oh yeah yeah that’s those are the people that make you but Rob I’ve got a birthday
