The Denver Broncos and Sean Payton hired another former New Orleans Saints’ employee on Tuesday, this side on the coaching staff, by bringing in Pete Carmichael as a senior offensive assistant.

Yeah um okay so let’s talk about p carmichel and I don’t think there’s a better person to ask this about than someone who was in the building with him for for months in New Orleans we got the expert Todd Davis I yeah I think he was

There when was there I was a rookie trying to make my way um and he was offensive coordinator I don’t know if we had many interactions uh so yeah what’s the offensive coordinator in your career you spent the most time with uh I don’t know would it it have been I

Mean he technically was the offensive would been K because not only Vikings that’s three years I guess he was head coach or coordinat but like did you talk to him much I when when he’s head coach I yeah like and he was in the Vikings we had already had a relationship so then

We would talk just because of that but was he a reason that you went there whether absolutely which Which Way both ways or was he wanting you were you I think he was the reason he was partly the reason why they even called me okay and then absolutely I was jumping on

Board to be back with Co so we’re we’re big fans of CBS absolutely without a doubt um yeah who else would it have been in Denver I don’t even well cuz the thing is like if if you didn’t ever talk to the offensive coordinator like that’s

What I was thinking not just like who was their longest but like did you do you does a linebacker ever talk to an offensive coordinator like sometimes I mean you have conversations like you have some coaches that have good personalities that you’ll talk to anybody but U probably talk to CP the

Most and after that I don’t even can’t even remember off the top of my head coin were oh because there were many not many I guess that was the thing about the defensive side of the ball is the defensive side of the ball for the most part had continuity yeah one or two

Years in a row well that’s a lot of continuity compared to the offense for for sure yeah um well speaking of continuity that’s what P car Michel is with sha Payton it is wild how these two guys are two PS in a pod and have been

When did Sean pton join the Saints 2006 when did Pete Carmichael join the Saints same time when did Sean P leave the Saints 2022 after the 2022 season no no no no after the 2021 season set out 2022 yep and then he also had a one-year Hiatus somewhere in the middle for being

Suspended when did Pete carich leave the Saints um they got rid of him last year right like a couple weeks ago was okay so he was with the Saints oh they wanted to get rid of him last year that’s what it was that’s I remember that why didn’t

They I I don’t remember the detail remember I remember but that was one of the big rumors was like everybody thought they were going to fire him after last season um and so like when Shawn was putting together his coaching staff here everybody’s like oh it could

Just be Pete but it turns out they kept him for another year before they got before they turned the page I bet so these guys are clearly friends and I bet Shawn wanted his friend to be fired last year cuz I think sea would have loved to

Have Pete not just on his staff last year but as his off defensive coordinator now Joel Lombardi Sean went back to the same well he’s like well if I can’t get Pete carmichel let me just go back to a well of a guy that I coached with in New Orleans and he went

And got his quarterback’s coach that’s who Joel Lombardi was for Shawn Payton in New Orleans was his quarterback’s coach you got to think that if Pete carmichel was available last year he would have been the Broncos offensive coordinator because he was the the Sean’s Payton’s offensive coordinator

With the Saints for over a decade y so this and I guess I jumped the news a little bit the Broncos are expected to hire Pete carmichel the Saints former offensive coordinator as a senior offensive assistant whatever that means but I think Sean kind of told us what this

Means he talked about it this past year when adding like pass game coordinators uh on the defensive side you have what pass rush coordinators and passing game coordinators you have these titles and the Broncos haven’t really had these titles at least since I’ve been covering the team so

Was asked about like what is an offensive assistant a senior offensive assistant what is a a pass rush coordinator and he essentially said he was very honest which I appreciate he said well it’s a way for us to pay guys more money and give them an elevated

Title and we can hire them away from other teams like so if you’re an assistant outside linebacker coach you can’t be hired to another team to be an assistant outside linebacker coach you have to be promoted and uh Sean said that like pass Rush coordinator is essentially an assistant outside

Linebacker coach just with a fancier title more money and then so if you have the owners that are willing to play pay you’re able to get these guys y so to me when I hear assist and offensive assistant for P carmichel I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s essentially the offensive

Coordinator yeah I think so and I think a lot of these ties are w a ways for them to get like guys like Joe vit who are like older seasoned guys who maybe want a little bit less responsibility on the today but you need their input and

Their expertise to tell us if we’re going down the wrong path you think we should do something else like you need those guys in the room who have long ten years in the NFL it’s a way for us to pay them well they can kind of take some

Of the pressure off of them so if anything goes wrong I think we’re not all looking at Pete caraka next year seeing like was it his was he at fault you know what I’m saying but it keeps him in the room keeps him on the staff

It keeps them paid well yeah and you job I guess the highest title he could have as just assistant head coach and that depends on if Mike westof is back next year he’s he’ll be 76 next season I think I think so so I mean I I don’t know what’s going through

His like I’m 27 I can’t even relate but but maybe he wants to be done maybe he wants to be back who knows but that would be like the highest title you can get it doesn’t seem like they would replace Joe Lombardi but at the same

Time I mean again that’s one of the most senior offensive assistant positions is offensive the most senior offensive position so I mean it is possible when you look at the fact that the offense wasn’t good last year like you could in theory move on from your offensive coordinator or

Demote him to quarterback’s coach but that seems unlikely um it’ll be interesting though because again like Pete carmichel he’s just he’s an offensive coordinator and so maybe it is just one of those like weird little like he’s just an analyst or sen senior analyst senior executive anal you know

Just put some words in there and then all of a sudden you pay him a bunch of money but I’m I’m curious how it go because all the all the way through it was you know Shawn is kind of at the head of the offense and then it’s Pete

And then it’s Joe and so maybe maybe they flip Joe and Pete go this season and leave Joe as offensive coordinator but it’s it’s just a kind of a strange Dynamic and I think they can do that without changing any titles like even while I I was at the Broncos there was

Plenty of times where there was somebody was the officer coordinator he coordinator but really they were a backseat to Who the head coach was at the time I think it’s very easy to change roles without having to change uh titles and and we saw that I think

Perfect example of this was on special teams last year the Broncos hired Ben cot weka just be be their special teams coordinator from an outside perspective kind of what you’re saying Todd is like okay that’s the guy that’s calling the plays making the final decisions but sometimes it doesn’t always work out

That way and an assistant to the head coach uh Mike westoff was brought in to I think it’s was a way to be able to get Ben Katka who they wanted in the building and then because he was an assistant special teams coordinator so

For the Broncos to hire him he had to be a special teams coordinator not just an assistant so they kind of uh took advantage of the system but it it’s a thing that you can do and so that’s why they made Mike westof the assistant head coach and entering the

Season we weren’t really sure exactly if that was truly like an assistant and Ben kawi was going to have all the power the Special Teams it became very clear like uh when Shawn would talk about special teams he would first point to like yeah uh West Hoff’s done a great

Job with special teams oh and and Ben too and it was very clear that oh okay they did this so that they could get all the guys they wanted in the building and I think that’s actually what could happen here is you’ve had a guy that was Shawn Payton’s right-hand man as the

Offensive coordinator that that’s exactly I think what what um Carmichael is going to be here and that’s significant I mean he was the Saints quarterback’s coach in 2006 then he was a quarterback’s coach and passing game coach in 20072 2008 and then from 2009 till last year he was the Saints

Offensive coordinator being Shawn Payton’s right-hand man so I have to imagine especially since they’re bringing him on now if he was available last year he probably would have been the Broncos um offensive coordinator Joel Lombardi since he was fired from the Chargers probably you would have been able to get him as the

Quarterback’s coach and so now I just think yeah they’re probably not going to fire Joe Lombardi roles are just going to change and uh the outside isn’t going to fully know but these guys are also going to get paid a lot of money too and uh it’s just giving Shawn pyton the

Setup that he had in New Orleans for 15 years yeah and I think it’s good for everybody um even for Lombardi I mean if the team has success on paper you’re still the offensive coordinator I think that’s good when you’re going out and getting other jobs um for teams to see I

Don’t think there’s anything wrong with it and you know we’ve been aing before everybody kind of knows their role you may have grown up a little bit but you know who the dad is you know you know who the grandpa is it kind of works the

Same you know wow Grandpa Sean Daddy Dad father father no father is like a Catholic Daddy no no no let’s just move on yeah no it’s a good thing um unless you think Russ is calling Sean daddy definitely no if anything I mean if anything that would be Peete you know oh

Cuz cuz Sean’s grand grandfather yes then what’s westof well we he’s well he’s not he’s not yeah but the other thing with W though is that like he was also kind of I mean toward the end of his career and so like he wasn’t super Hands-On with

The Special Teams like like he can go through and Scout and come up with ideas and do all that sort of stuff but like when it comes time to go to practice the Kaa is doing a lot more of the talking than westof is I would I would

Imagine at least from what we saw I think um and so you do Wonder though like when you do have like say say they just make him assistant head coach because westoff decides to retire it’s it is just kind of a strange Dynam like you you have I I guess

Sometimes you see that is like there’s like one guy at the top and then it’s kind of like a pyramid structure and I guess that’s kind of what it would be I guess it’s easier because you don’t you have your head coach calling plays and so there isn’t like a power struggle

Year it can be put on Russ it can be put on whatever but now now Shawn pyton has his right-hand guy that he had for 15 years and he was truly his right-hand guy for over a decade in New Orleans and there’s one thing we haven’t talked

About this not only being his right-hand guy for when it comes to Personnel when it comes for game plan and when it comes for actual game day and he’s up in the booth telling Sean exactly what he’s seeing um and clearly they feel very comfortable with each other there but

Quarterback yes Shawn pton had Drew Brees for the majority of the time y but Drew Brees is quarterback coach when he got to New Orleans was Pete carmichel and Pete carmichel was instrumental extremely Hands-On Todd you told us just is it yesterday or Friday how important

That position coach is for a player and a person and and helping them out that was Drew Brees’s guy and then he obviously evolved to be even more of Drew’s guy when he became the offensive coordinator this is huge not just for the offense and Sean but for whoever the

Broncos next quarterback is I think so I think you know they work really well together and there’s not that kind of underlying tension between two coaches where you don’t know if it’s you or the player I think no matter what these guys know they’re going to stick in together

And write it out so I can be very honest about how my player is doing and how I feel like things he can’t do things he can do well I think they just have a good communication to where it’s going to help the player out the the most

Because I’ve seen it where you know if it’s a new coordinator and a position coach they have their own little riff and back and forth and the position coach is trying to stay here long enough but he knows he has to get the best out of his players but he can’t blame what’s

Happening to his players on himself because then he’s in trouble so it’s it’s like a weird dynamic so none of that will be happening here and I think they’ll be able to get the best out of whoever they hopefully draft you think it’s significant too Henry I mean yeah I

Mean it’s another one of those where you’re never going to know whether he helped or hurt or whatever like it’s you know like there might be a story at some point where it’s like selling me that sign you don’t think so what about all the success they’ve had in New

Orleans together oh like it’s great it’s like nice but there’s maybe at some point there’s like a postgame press conference where Shawn shows up and says yeah that game-winning touchdown pass with 5 seconds left on the clock Pete carmichel drew that up and said let’s call that that like maybe you have like

A moment like that where you’re like oh there’s something he did but for the most part though like it’s Those Behind the Scenes hes like we’re not going to be able to like evaluate it or grade it it’s just like things are going to work and things aren’t going to work and

We’re not going to be able to say it would have or wouldn’t have either way so like yeah it’s it’s important it also depends on like what his actual role is you’d imagine it’ll just be like kind of a normal structure but like yeah it’s it’s important it’s not this is probably

The last time we’ll ever talk about it though and that’s fine unless he’s fired yeah if he gets fired but even then like we wouldn’t be able to say like oh yeah he got fired because this it’ll just be like he got fired I wonder what he did wrong you

Know like maybe the offense is going poorly and so Sean just throws him under the bus but like I you know we don’t we don’t see results from that position in particular if he’s fired that I think that’d be really bad cuz that means things are going so bad on offense that

Shawn one either feels like he needs a scapegoat on offense or that the offense is in such shambles that he has to make a massive shake up and it’s either Lombardi or him and again I think he’s going to be like the number two behind Sean on this so I hope

That’s not the case I hope it’s not but one thing we can talk about is from an outsider perspective the Broncos are be calling the Denver Saints right now for all of the people from the front office heck we talked about one yesterday Cody rager joining the team to coaches we

Talked about many of them today that are are from New Orleans coming to Denver and I think the Broncos had like 8 to 10 players join uh the from the Saints last year to the Broncos this year under Shawn is it a good thing that the

Broncos are the Denver Saints I think it is they they were a very successful organization and team um I understand why Shan wants to recruit his guys over here and get some of the same players same energy uh the same winning culture um now if they were the Cleveland Browns

For the last 10 years i’ like keep them out of the building but they were very successful so I think it’s good to you know bring them along yeah doesn’t hurt like it’s just what happens you know it’s not really a surprise like you bring in a head coach he’s going to when

You got to fill a role you fill it with somebody you know unless unless like you’re Raheem Morris for example who wasn’t all that successful in his first job and so he didn’t he probably won’t bring a lot of people who were on his staff the first time with him but again

Like when it’s Shawn Payton who was the same at the same place for like 15 16 years like of course this is what’s going to happen but it’s not really a surprise yeah of course exactly that’s what’s going to happen like you said it’s going to happen anywhere you just

Look at Nathaniel Hackett um he brought over a lot of his guys from Green Bay to be on his staff now you got to get the right guy at top in order for this to work and Sean he’s got the track record and so I don’t I don’t mind it you know

I don’t think I think it’s good to have some different opinions in certain places but the Broncos have it’s not the entire New Orleans Saints staff or the entire entire New Orleans Saints roster but for the most part I don’t I don’t know how you could look at the success

Sea Payton and the Saints had and not like it I mean 15 years and you had a losing record four times where you went no five times you went seven and nine the other 10 years you had a winning record you made the playoffs eight times no nine times out

Of 15 years yeah it’s it’s not bill bellich and the Patriots where when he had Tom Brady it was playoffs every single year that Tom was healthy or at Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid right now where six straight AFC championship games but that’s about as good as you’re

Going to get is playoffs nine of 15 years so absolutely you’re going to take it specifically from the offensive side of the ball that’s something where Shawn pyton even if they weren’t making the playoffs Todd do you know the worst offense in terms of points scored and

How it will rank in the NFL the worst offense that Shawn pyton had um I guess outside of his final year his final year they were 19th but outside of that one middle of the pack 15th 16th yeah that would you sign up for that like as the

Worst yes the wor absolutely it was 12th wow so it was like just outside the top third was the worst he had he had a top offense um in points per game a couple of times and then he was top five pretty much every other year outside of like

Being 10th 11th or 12th one year so you can’t argue with the offensive success that they had there and so why not pair not just those two but then also you add Lombardi in there who was the quarterback’s coach for a few years with car Michael as his offensive coordinator

And Shawn as a head coach I think it’s a perfect perfect fit hopefully it works out uh you got to have a good quarterback to have a good quarterback coach but we’ll see how that goes y do you think sea this makes Shawn a lot more comfortable in finding that next

Quarterback or do you think this was going to be like Shawn’s guy and he’s not listening to anyone else I think it’s going to be more of a little bit more of a collective I think if if Sean CH anybody he trust guys like Pete carmichel who he’s been around for

That forever I think that’s the most limited position on offense or like the one you can play play for the least amount of time is running back and so I just don’t think you can cuz his big thing was that he wasn’t the fastest but

He broke a lot of tackles and made big plays yeah I think just that ability just kind of slowly dwindles the longer that you’re in the NFL yeah 220 pounds he’s a power guy um and to your point Todd he has been way more of a runner

Than a receiver and certainly more than a quarterback um last year he ran for 404 yards four touchdowns uh average five yards per carry which is good but he’s also getting the ball in a non-traditional running back form where it’s probably easier to set him up to

Get bigger carries and and average more yards per carry last year though he had his second best receiving actually no his best receiving season in the NL from scrimmage too yeah 33 catches for 291 yards two touchdowns compared to previous years 77 yards 52 receiving yards 98 receiving yards so he hasn’t

Been that receiver until really last season yeah yeah I mean yeah I think probably be here we’re having trouble getting the balls of the guys that we got now exactly exactly we don’t need option when you got those guys like Shawn Payton and all that and Tamm Hills

Him to play outside a little bit like a DN but then you get him in the middle a lot too like that’s going to change the dynamic of our Run game and our passing game because we have no disrespect to any of the guys that are out there right

Now but the the pass rush is not coming from the middle and it’s rarely coming from the outsides so we need to change up the dynamic of who we have past rushing to be able to get more pressure on quarterbacks the best way to affect Mahomes is

Not have him be able to sit back there for 10 minutes like he’s literally sitting and just watching Travis KC no he’s not open now okay now he’s open and just able to throw the ball he has too much time he’s too comfortable sometimes yeah and especially not blitzing but being able

To get pressure on yeah exactly and that inside pressure and then talk about how much that would help the young guys on the outside the Nick Bonito Baron brownings because then they don’t have to do it all on themselves then those quarterbacks are flushed out to them

Where then they get to they get to really be that speed rusher yeah that’s probably the answer I mean tight end’s another one where tight like if you’re saying like you can either have like an upgrade defensive line would be great but it’s like number one if you get like

The All Pro type of player you know like if you just go get like another really good like Fringe Pro Bowl guy that’d be nice but like you might go somewhere else but if you’re talking like you just get an all proo that you get to plug in

Then defensive line makes sense and I think tight end makes sense too like you just see like how much those guys carry offenses like you just can’t I don’t think you can have a good offense without a good re receiving tight end at this point like you just look around

Like the four tight ends in the playoffs at the end I guess Mark Andrews wasn’t wasn’t healthy for a lot of this stretch but you had him and Isaiah likely was playing insanely well and that was like the worst situation because of those injuries look at what Le pora did like

Lea was like the basis of that entire offense like you build off of that like that’s what opens up guys over the top because they’re so worried about the middle that’s how you get the Run game going cuz they’re worried about the middle obviously KD and Kelce like those

Guys are how you like just create a dominant offense and I think honestly maybe the same thing about that interior defensive line spot like have a great player then there you go yeah it’s the easiest throw for the quarterback it’s the shortest throw uh most accurate

Throw they make all game like if you have a good tight end it really helps the quarterback out a lot and it’s like modern NFL it used to be like 80s and 90s like you weren’t short passing or I mean like the West Coast offense wasn’t that’s why it was

Incredible because that’s when they first started thinking like you you can get six seven yards a pop when you pass the ball if you just do that every single time and you’re super efficient with it you’ll get all the way down the field and score and now everybody’s

Doing that everybody’s like yeah it’s more efficient to pass then run assuming you don’t turn the ball over and the way to do that isn’t just to like Chuck it deep over and over and over again and that’s where everybody looks back at John Elway’s numbers and say like he was

Super inefficient this is D it’s like what that’s what you were told to do like that’s how football that’s how offense was played at the time and so now at this point when the goal of offense is just to go get you like eight yards a pop having a tight end like

Teams that maybe they can consistently get to the playoffs or compete for the playoffs but they’re not going to win anything yeah Baker Mayfield is going to get I think 25 $30 million a year at least this year and he’s throwing the ball what 20 20 times a game right so I

Think if he’s throwing the ball 20 times a game that means he has effect on 20 plays a game right yeah Chris Jones probably will make eight tackles couple couple hurries maybe a sack or two a game let’s just say he’s affecting the quarterback 15 times a

Game mhm that’s a that’s that’s not a big difference to me you know I feel like he should be paid well just like if a quarterback is too yeah very fair Elite quarterbacks are worth all the money in the world where you get hoes and put in awful situations when you pay
