Rory McIlroy’s UGLY embedded ball and ruling at AT&T Pebble Beach

In the opening round of the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Rory McIlroy hits a tee shot at the par-5 first hole, which he and playing partner Ludvig Åberg struggle to find. After searching, McIlroy finds the ball in the fairway and takes embedded ball relief. After hitting his second shot short of the green, a rules official deemed he was entitled to a preferred lie, and after placing it, McIlroy proceeds to make birdie.

The PGA TOUR continues up the California coast this week for the first mainland Signature Event of the season as Pebble Beach Golf Links hosts the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Rory McIlroy is making his 2024 debut on TOUR this week. The Northern Irishman has had a strong start to 2024 by finishing runner-up in the Dubai Invitational and then claiming victory at the following week’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour. His best finish at Pebble Beach came at the 2019 U.S Open where he finished ninth. Reigning FedExCup champion Viktor Hovland will also be in California this week. It’s been five years since his historic T12 finish as an amateur at Pebble Beach in the 2019 U.S Open. He managed T13 at last year’s event and will be looking to build on his three wins on TOUR in 2023. Jordan Spieth returns to Pebble Beach where he has had great success with a win (2017), T3 (2021) and a solo second (2022) among six top-10s. He also started the season with a T3 at The Sentry just after the New Year. Others to look out for are Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood and Max Homa.

75 to 100 ft down to the Fairway little helping Breeze very aggressive line I’m not sure the marshals y sorry Craig no you’re good very few would take that line I remember I always used to just try and keep it inside the right spy glass Hill there’s Mark carnavale and Rory mroy Carney

Wears the ball uh we’re trying to find it uh they we had a couple of the over of course they have no idea where the ball is coming from I should say where it’s going because they’re way below that level there’s Sun up there uh they heard

Something uh hit but again it’s so soft the ball didn’t bounce so we’re just you know we’re having a little Expedition here to try try to find his ball I think you guys are looking in the right place that’s Greg Parker spotter for the NBC Sports CBS Sports and a

Former caddy and I when he was looking in that left rough that look like the spot and Roy’s just checking his numbers this would have been a shot he would have hit in the practice rounds if you can see there’s the problem right right of the tree how how

How are you compared to L are you a little longer a little longer okay where’s L an over holer out there also yeah that’s the problem wherever this ball landed it may have just embedded which is going to make it harder to see oh here it is I got it on theway he

Found itug in the embedded on the right side I was like yeah it’s definitely good so PE fur the left of that tree that line wasn’t aggressive enough wasn’t aggressive enough okay disaster averted and much like the rest of us when we play number one at

Spy glass Hill we’re just happy to find it look at that look at the size of that pitch mark backing your win look at that had trouble even getting the bow out of the ground excavation equipment required at spy glass Hill and every hole at spy glass Hill is named after a

Significant character or portion of Trev Treasure Island number one just got the title billing it’s called Treasure Island in that back hole location where it is not very deep hanging on here this going a little left o that was that was awfully close to being really good Saturday’s supposed to be nice but

Windy Rory is here at the par five first Mark carnavale what are we looking at he called on a rules official the ball is right on the edge of the first cut in The Fringe and you know he just wants to make if it’s touching any part

Of the goo Touching The Fringe he is entitled to Preferred lies so he’ll be able to move it as it is right now he’s right on the edge of the first cutter rough in The Fringe uh yeah not all that big a deal I think it’s still opportunity to play the

Shot but I think it’s one where obviously you’re able to get relief it makes it a touch easier oh he’s going to get a full Club length if he gets it that’s a good call closer to the green the general area I think that was Steven Cox coming in Aaron’s always in the

Middle of the picture has won this one di is touching the close looks like it is yeah you’re comfortable with that okay I just wanted to make sure yeah okay all right thanks got it right so he is going to get an entire Club length you have to measure your relief area

With the longest Club in your bag that isn’t your l no Club L there all right so Rory gets his relief didn’t really go that far sideways Carney what do you think well because you got they preferred lies he didn’t have to drop it either he’s able to place it so that

Would have been a big difference I don’t think he would have dropped it personally slightly move away from him but shouldn’t be too bad just stretch ball I have a question Brian you’re an expert with the he won full Club Ling he did he could have gone completely away

From that primary cut a rifle where it didn’t impede the back swing I think might have made an incorrect drop well not an correct drop but just a poor decision on where he chose to drop it maybe there was a sprinkler that would have been the way or something he didn’t

Like you’re right he could have gone laterally either direction good fo yeah that was probably a belly wedge wasn’t it thanks for watching the PG Tour on YouTube to watch more click here to subscribe click here

  1. Rory really never gdts in yrouble when he plays golf…it only happens when he opens his mouth. He's far better off saying nothing and have people think he's an idiot, than open his mouth and remove all doubt!

  2. As for his choice of preferred lie, my guess is he wanted something more square to the fringe rather than having to cross it at an angle. Less fringe to putt across and less break to account for when it leaves the fringe and rolls onto the putting surface. That would be my preference too (mid singles marker). Cheers – Dave
