You on the show give us your summary here of what you like about Shane Waldren and specifically the fit here in Chicago yeah thanks for having me back I uh I tried to hint hint wink wink Montes sweat as much as humanly possible last time so uh you know that finally came
Through for us uh yeah so you know walren I thought was a legitimate head coaching candidate when it looked like early in the year maybe the Bears were trending in that direction um he is you know you’re going to hear that he’s McVey tree Shanahan tree he does have a
Lot of Staples from those offenses but he also has some unique wrinkles of his own and the biggest thing for me is we talk a lot about pre-ap motion using play action using different things um to basically make it easier on your offense and to put defenders in Conflict whether
It’s the nman on the line of scrimmage on defense or the second level Defenders at off ball linebacker Luke gety had plenty of it just wasn’t actually like tied to accomplishing anything or creating throwing windows or creating rushing Lanes like there is there is an intentionality to what Shane Waldren
Does and then the last big thing for me is there’s no tails with his Personnel so he had this super funky package he ran this year where he have two tight ends as like HBS or basically like just fullbacks you know left of or right of
Gino Smith um with a running back behind them they ran out of it they passed out of it they had play action half field concept High low uh you know reads out of it like everything he does from a play design standpoint there’s a ton of intentionality the last piece I would
Say too is he creates free releases and gets Guys open with good spacing you know Bunch alignments Stacks tight splits um to enable DK metf for example to attack the sideline by having more room to operate long answer short um he’s just you can tell that he knows
What he’s trying to accomplish um he’s going to pass the ball a lot top 10 imp pass pass rate they were third in explosive passing this year um in terms of the amount of time they were throwing downfield of course the quarterback matters but I feel like I’m rambling now
I can go on forever but yeah I think it’s a phenomenal hire and I can tell you for a fact he was the most sought-after offensive coordinator probably in the cycle so why do you think the Bears won out then Brad let’s let’s let’s go there because that’s what
Is maybe the most exciting part of this cuz you know will mattl be there will he not be there do you think he’s looking at this like he could be a head coach down the line or he like just love the bearss talent whatever way they go I
Mean my answer is not going to is going to split the fan base uh in half if I say why I really think he took this job and why it’s the most attractive opening to him the Chicago Bears own the first overall pick and yeah if you’re if
You’re on the head coach track or want to be on the head coach track if you step in coach a rookie and do well look at Bobby slowick in uh you know Houston for example you’re immediately a head coach candidate now I will say um Shane wal worked at the quarterback Collective
If you go to QB collective.com Justin Fields is literally the homepage um but Cale Williams also works there too they both train with this group so he has connections to both guys but again you can make the argument okay you’re keeping the same language from the previous offense although I will say If
You think Luke gy and Shane Waldren ran a very similar offense I don’t know I don’t think you’re watching the tape that that closely um but yeah for me when you’re a sought-after OC that could have waited out some head coach hes or could have gone to other places and you
Choose Chicago to me that screams because you’re going to be working with the first overall pick quarterback when you talk about him getting the ball to DK meta a lot of times here there were long periods where the Bears could not get the ball to DJ Moore for one reason
Or another how does he go about ensuring that his number one target is going to get targets right it’s going to get the ball thrown his way even when the defense is obviously trying to take him away yeah I think that is the biggest thing is there were times where they
Basically just asked DJ Moore to just win one-on-one which obviously he can do at times but I think a big one for example I just touched on is you’d have DK and a bunch or a stack out wide but he would be actually be the inside receiver um you’d maybe get some motion
At times or he would be he would get a free release on break outside or even on like a corner route from a narrower a tighter bunch and so it just it created more room for him to operate and we’ve seen DJ Moore those over the shoulder
Catches near the sideline from more of an inside alignment but just things like that like I mentioned the motion and all these various components and then the last thing I would say too is I think there was a massive issue with TS based on personnel and if you put you know a
DJ Moore out there with certain players I think the defense say okay they’re either going to run the ball or probably throw it to DJ Moore or it’s gonna be an end round to vus Jones because if V Jones was on the field it was gonna be
An end round or a run like stuff like that I I just don’t see that when I watch walren film so I think that too just just more uncertainty for the opposing defense so yeah I I think that the the way this played out is interesting to me because
It felt like Brad the coaching cycle was almost on hold until you know we got more of these head coaches figured out and it seems like everybody’s sort of waiting on Harbaugh and bellich in in some way so I didn’t I didn’t know if they get this thing I like I I’ll be
Honest I was a little surprised that I woke up to this news mon you know Monday morning like I thought this would I don’t know if the 49ers winning and how much they were talking to to kubak mattered in all this um but I do think that there’s some some truth to what
You’re saying about the attractiveness of this opportunity for Shane Waldren who by the way we should point out like is from the Northwest he’s from Portland uh the Portland area so I’m sure he liked working we just opened voodo Donuts down the street so maybe oh maybe
That’s it that could that could be it too um so I I guess we got to talk this out a little bit more from both scenarios because I am with you I think that most likely this has a lot to do with you know the potential of coaching Caleb
Williams but what do you think he could do or how this could work his system if they keep Justin Fields yeah so you know the beauty of what he’s done is you know going to work with going transitioning from Russell Wilson to Gino Smith even before that in La obviously it’s Shawn
Mcvey’s offense but you’re working with Jared G then you’re working with Matthew Stafford you have to coach like John Wolford in a playoff game like they obviously work through some backups because of injuries things like that and you saw if you want to say McVey is kind
Of his guy he actually has Patriots background he was a high school head coach like 20 years ago he’s really has one of the more interesting you know kind of career Paths of any of these guys but I think the biggest thing is catering what he wants to accomplish to
The Personnel to the quarterback so I think the biggest thing I saw watching this year Gino Smith tape would be a lot of that boot boot action off of play action and half field Concepts half field reads you know high lows where you’d have a DJ Moore but maybe a CO K
In the flat and things of that nature again not that Justin Fields can’t just be a West Coast uh you know shotgun quarterback but I think we’re getting to the point where it’s like no let’s put this guy under Center let’s use his legs as a true weapon in the passing game and
The running game Let’s tie our run Concepts to our passing Concepts and I think walren is perfectly capable of doing that um and has seen it up close and personal you know with a Jared gof like with different players that aren’t going to sit back in shotgun 80% of the
Time um and just work on quick outs so I I really do think no matter who the quarterback is he’s still a phenomenal hire I just when you ask the question of like why is it enticing to him you know it just that’s how it kind of comes off
To me I mean you look at Gino right from 2015 to 2021 he never threw the ball more than 100 times in a season I mean he and he he played a grand total of 15 games and and a lot of that was in mop-up Duty taking one
Snap then he throws for 4,200 yard and this year he throws for over 3600 what did he do Brad in your mind that unlocked Gino and you know they if it is Justin we don’t need him to do that but he obviously saw something with Gino and
Used him in ways that he hadn’t been used before yeah so I think you jack up the play action rate a high RPO rate as well uh the top 10 play action rate I think they were like 14th in NRP rate um I’m looking at right now 12th um and
Then going back to Justin Fields they were third in the NFL in the Deep pass rate so there was a lot of quick outs and and underneath Concepts and Manufacturing easier throws um I I think the big thing for him too is throwing the ball a lot on early downs and
Getting him in more favorable situations um they had the second best uh series conversion rate on first down so converting a first down into a new first down they weren’t trying to run run pass and getting third and manageable and all these cliches you hear about bad NFL
Offenses that don’t know how to win in 2023 like that’s not what Shane Walden is trying to accomplish so I think it would come back to that is a lot of shot plays a lot of attempts at explosives tap into Fields who’s one of the still one of the better downfield passers in
The entire NFL um but maybe the volume is a little bit lower maybe you’re only throwing the ball 21 27 times a game um but it’s way more efficient and way more explosive I’m here for that Brad I like that I’m a big Justin Fields guy so I’m
Only viewing this thing from the perspective of what does he do for Justin I know that that’s a very very real possibility of Caleb getting here and I will be excited about that too but when you look at Justin’s game and what he saw what you saw um in terms of Gino
Smith and getting him to that next level I think that you can have that same type of value for Shane Waldren in terms of you know look what he did for Justin getting him to that next level getting him excuse me getting him into that Elite level of quarterbacks I think that
Would have the same effect as it would if he came in here and did that for KB Williams in his rookie year it’s true no it’s a good point right if you go in and say hey this offense from a passing perspective and it’s not just Justin’s fault right obviously they fired gety
For a reason um and I don’t think the league was particularly shocked by that yeah it would also be a great resume booster and I think what you saw there with youo his time to throw came way down um and they really worked on again like when it wasn’t the explosives it
Was a lot of just um when they were attacking the middle of the field and the biggest thing for Justin to work on that walren probably would help a lot is manipulating Defenders with your eyes holding up safeties or even moving linebackers to create these windows on Slants
Um and quick outs over the middle that you know was it schemed out perfectly probably not but but I do think you know Fields kind of struggle sometimes I’m just like hitting a quick slant for seven yards and just getting it out um not entirely his fault but I think
Manipulating Defenders with his footwork with his eyes all of that is where Shane Waldren would be a massive benefit as well all right so um for those that don’t know or and first of all you should be following Brad’s work at PFF Brad but he’s a salary cap expert I mean
That’s really um usually when we’ve had him on the show in the past is to talk about stuff like that so I don’t want to miss this opportunity to just ask you in general about how you’re viewing the Bears cap situation going in this offense obviously we know it’s not
Really an issue at all um but and yes a dog just walked on to the set it’s poppy poppy over there we’re trying to get her to Studio B get over there go over there there we go car’s bring K brings his dog to work day lot going on today really been my
Day keep going ho all right uh Brad just General thoughts on where the bearss cap is at and um how are how are you viewing the advantageous situation that they are in once again yeah it’s beautiful you know I think for a couple reasons so when your best players already and you
Know DJ Moore Montes sweat obviously the big additions they had last offseason are already on veteran contracts like a lot of times we fall in love with this one static cap space number looking at an offseason say yeah but who are you losing in free agency that might need
Resigning what are some of the early extension candidates you have to resign they don’t really have much of that I mean like maybe you reach out to a te Jenkins and try to get a you know team-friendly type deal that probably I think would behoove him as well yes he’s
A great player one healthy the one healthy is is a big part of the equation there but you know the fifth year option if they do go to Fields route about 2223 million not a huge concern for 2025 there and then the way they structured these contracts in last year’s free
Agents he was this flat year-to-year approach Co Ked extension as well he has the exact same cap hit the next four years in a row um they really you could tell last year when they finally started to spend it was still we’re going to be patient and we’re not going to you know
Push the cap down the road make it harder later we want to be able to spend in each window they’re they’re in a perfect situation they have no you know restriction I mean obviously cash uh the budget they get there but but salary cap wise they can do whatever they want how
Would you handle Jaylen Johnson because obviously um you can tag them but it also sounds like both sides of suddenly shifted towards um you know going from a trade demand that happened at the last minute before the trade deadline to seemingly sounding optimistic that a
Deal is going to get done um do you look at it like if you’re Ry polls are you like oh man maybe should have gotten that deal done a little earlier this is going to cost us a little bit more or do you look at it like we had concerns this
Dude answered those concerns so you know so what we got to pay him more at least we know more of what we have now yeah obviously he’s the one the big one that I should not have forgotten as like the big you know potential future expenditure you know top 10 of my free
Agent rankings for a reason he was our highest graded Corner in the NFL I think it goes both ways like I think you do it was fair to with this new regime comes in you’re changing the defensive scheme you know the injury concerns of like missing four or five games which again a
Lot of the elite Corners do in this league it’s a very hard position to play all 17 games um and he answered the questions right he he was outstanding this year um truly and then once you bring in an actual pass rush in front of him just gets even better starts turning
The ball over um you know getting all those picks probably could have had a couple more it is fascinating though because around the trade deadline you hear I’m not trying to be the highest paid corner in the NFL I do want of course make good money and he should um
Certainly be in the upper echelon like comfortably top 10 among Corners um and then now was it last week he was like yeah I don’t see why I wouldn’t be the highest paid corner in the NFL and I think it’s interesting because he had he makes a fairly routine tackle and
Separates I don’t want I I’m not a doctor something happened to his shoulder I don’t know what it was that’s been his concern he had I think two shoulder surgeries before he even got to the NFL um and like he’s missed time because of that specific issue so if I
Had to guess I do think a franchise tag is coming maybe we get a second trade request after that um but but I think they’ll find a way to keep him on this roster and I would say you could make the argument po probably should have pulled the trigger earlier but that’s
For me that’s like we don’t know the full picture um but he probably himself would say like yeah I kind of missed missed the boat there no I’m with you on that I’m with you on that one Brad in terms of it’s looking like it’s feeling
Real tagish to me like that’s how I think this thing is going when you hear Jaylen talk about you know why should not be the highest paid corner and then when you heard Ryan PA at the press conference said jayen ain’t going nowhere like that didn’t to me it didn’t
Say like because I’m about to give him 100 million it was like because I don’t have to let him go you know what I mean and so I think I think he heading down that road but I think that’s a dangerous thing to play too I think he rolled the
Dice on him I thought he kind of got some insurance he drafted two corners in the draft and Jaylen just continued to elevate above that I think he’ll continue to do that again I think this was his first year really coming into his prime he 24 years old you can tag
Him twice if you want to he’ll still be 26 yeah I I’m hearing it differently I think they’re signing him but but maybe you guys will all be right hey along those lines though do you think this changes anything as far as you know looking at Bears free agents and whatnot
Do you think this changes anything for Darnell Mooney cuz you had you know you got two 1,000 yard receivers in DK meta and Tyler Lockett last year and they were right at it again this year and I don’t you know it did obviously did not
Go the way Mooney wanted it to go the Bears wanted to go either this year but do you think changes anything with Waldren it’s an interesting thought if I had to guess on top of my head he probably ran way more 11 personnel then L gety going back to the Packers days um
You know again they’re not really a one for one I know they’re similar kind of in their background but but not really so maybe I I just still am not sure the Bears view Mooney as a perfect fit I they want these like bigger receivers that can you know block a little bit
Better out in space like not blaming Mooney but how many screen passes do we see where he’s supposed to be the lead block for DJ Moore and the play just got blown up and it’s like they shouldn’t be asking to do that like that’s their
Fault for asking him to do that but so yeah I wonder it’s a good question um because you know like even jsn their slot guy is like six foot 215 like I know he like people think he’s this small player like he’s not so I it’s a
Good question I I would say not really a meaningful difference if I had to guess yeah I mean the one thing I think we can all agree on bearss need more weapons you know and and if they want it to look like it did in Seattle um that’re
They’re going to have to get and I think Ryan poles is gonna address that um we we always talk last thing for you Brad Karm always trying to talk polls um and fails at it I think Brad does a great job of speaking polls I’m I’m open to hearing Brad speak
Polls but just in general you got any favorite like if could build this offseason I don’t want you to go through the whole thing right now but like top targets especially now that you know who the OC is like what would you do if you’re Ryan poles what are you
Prioritizing we spend way too much time talking about the quarterback on the show for good reason but you know beyond the quarterback decision what what what do you want to see happen I think you’re praying that romad dun is on the board at nine you know I think Malik neighbors
And obviously Marvin Harrison Jr will be gone by then I I frankly think both could be top five picks um I do love I love radun there are some mocks now that have him ahead of those guys I think he’s just a small Notch below those
Players um so yeah you pray he’s there at nine um if not like maybe hypothetically the second round pick you would get back from a field trade you’re taking ad Mitchell out of Texas or you know I mean there’s a million receivers in this class like they probably should
Draft one in the first two rounds and another um in rounds four through six uh you know if I was if I was going through it I know right now they don’t have a six but you know polls will trade down at some point so definitely a receiver
Is maybe the top priority for me and then you need another Edge you need another guy off the edge opposite of montz sweat um is that a guy if you’re sitting in the top 10 and it doesn’t fall in your favor you know Dallas Turner put on some weight I would have
Said last year he was not a scheme fit he looks much bigger this past season um I love you L to latu at at UCLA he has some injury questions there and then yeah from a free agency standpoint I they should try to get Jaylen Johnson
Back I like Terrell Smith but you saw in that Green Bay game like the difference between having Jaylen and Terrell kind of got both a little bit by you know Wick and some of those guys they’re who are they trading Justin fields for I heard it’s going to be for
The number eight overall pick and they’re going to package the eight with the nine move up and draft Marvin and pairing with Caleb that’s what I heard’s going to happen all right and then they’re going to get the keys to Washington DC or I mean whatever whatever city is yeah the keys to
Atlanta I think they would get a second round pick and then like the Sam darnold package to me I think is where the conversation is he got a two a four and a six has Field’s been better than Darnell was his first couple years yes do I think more coaches back then were
Like oh the Jets just totally failed Sam darnold and we could fix him and and make him work I I think he kind of was viewed in that light which obviously is not you know correct but um but yeah so I think you’re getting a two as the top
Draft pick and then more on top of that I got one more with Shane do you think if they go the Caleb route that he can come in here in this offense and hit the ground running I do 100% so like I mentioned he’s already working with you
Know this group that that Shane does work with he’s working with Rich scangarella there’s videos out I’m sure he’s working on his footwork and timing and all these little intricate intricate details look you’re not g to get a CJ strad situation every year um I find the
Conversation on Caleb and also I should say we’re making this this binary Caleb or Fields I think Drake May might go first overall like we shouldn’t like not talk about that but anyway um and some people are gonna start arguing he’s a better fit with Waldren which I would
Need to watch more to get there but anyway I do I I think Caleb’s floor is is not appreciated he can play in the quick game he has a lightning quick release which I think was my biggest takeaway from CJ strad I’m going to Value more in evaluating quarterbacks
Going forward is a quick release like that it opened up so many windows and enabled him to make so many throws because he has the fastest release uh like I’ve ever seen and Caleb has that quick twitch too so yes I think this could be a playoff team I’m not
Expecting it but I think this could be a playoff team of the rookie quarterback next year right any chance he’s been up in Washington any chance he loves pinnick not not first overall uh no no you have to move down to do that but yeah I mean
I don’t see why not I mean a guy again has a pretty quick release can throw absolute nukes uh I mean if you want to go that route of going the you know the competition route maybe like you add another guy you take it slow I I suppose
But I I personally probably wouldn’t take penick’s first round I love what he did this year but 24 two ACL surgeries shoulder issues like he’s awesome but I I just to me he’s not a first round pick you speak poles he speaks walren I don’t know if he speaks flu I don’t know
If anyone does I don’t know if anybody speaks flu that’s why we love Brad you did say at some point Brad this was your number one choice this is who the bear should have hired you said that right absolutely okay he’s all over he was all over Mont sweat too all right crushing

I used to love this podcast but Carm ruins it and Herb is only okay in small doses. I think I’m going to stick exclusively to hoge&jahns.
