Golf Tips from Legend Tom Watson | The Basic Chip Shot

Golf Tips from Legend Tom Watson | The Basic Chip Shot
the basic Chip Shot just like the long swing we have to start with the proper grip and the proper stance and setup in chipping I don’t like to use the full length of the golf club I like the grip down on the golf club and keep it in the same position for all your Chip Shot so you have a basic same feel with the club head the other thing is grip pressure one of the common mistakes I see with a lot of poor chippers is how tightly they grip onto the golf club that leads into real stiff hand hands they get and very fast types of golf swings keep the grip pressure light you must feel the weight of the club head all right start with your body Square to the line all your knees hips shoulders all square to the line then I want you to move your whole body open which means you aim it left of the line like this then I want you to twist your hips and your shoulders back to square on the line like this now make a few practice swings try to brush the grass that will establish the bottom of your Ark then place the ball just at the beginning of the bottom of the Ark and hit it not too bad one of the key positions in being a good chipper is that you want the left hand to lead the club head into the impact area you want the left hand to be slightly ahead of the club head this is square up this is straight up this is left hand leading remember you want the left hand to lead the club head into the impact area when I chip I chip by feel but I’m always looking at a particular spot on the green to where I want to chip the ball to land the ball there and let the ball roll in this particular instance you’ll see a a white spot when I try when I set up here I try to land the ball on that spot and let the ball roll to the hole take the break get up to the hole there now my good friend Byron Nelson said one of the key things in making a good Chip Shot is you have to have a little bit of a lower leg action to make it work you may you need to do that so that you can carry your left hand through the impact area if you have straight legs and they don’t move what happens going through your left hand breaks down like this and all sorts of bad things can happen remember what Byron Nelson said you must have the legs active in the Chip Shot to carry the left hand through the impact area like this to review the basic Chip Shot you must grip down to the club consistently with each Club you’re chipping with number two light grip pressure you want to feel the club head you want to feel the club head number three start Square to the aim line which is that white dot there let’s open our body the whole body knees hips shoulders let’s close our hips and shoulders keeping our feet right there weight on the Left Foot Right knee kind of kicked in just a little bit and watch the lower body work

The basic Chip Shot just like the long swing we have to start with the proper grip and the proper stance and setup in chipping I don’t like to use the full length of the golf club I like the grip down on the golf club and keep it in the

Same position for all your Chip Shot so you have a basic same feel with the club head the other thing is grip pressure one of the common mistakes I see with a lot of poor chippers is how tightly they grip onto the golf club that leads into

Real stiff hand hands they get and very fast types of golf swings keep the grip pressure light you must feel the weight of the club head all right start with your body Square to the line all your knees hips shoulders all square to the line then I

Want you to move your whole body open which means you aim it left of the line like this then I want you to twist your hips and your shoulders back to square on the line like this now make a few practice swings try to brush the grass that will establish the bottom of

Your Ark then place the ball just at the beginning of the bottom of the Ark and hit it not too bad one of the key positions in being a good chipper is that you want the left hand to lead the club head into the impact area you want the left hand to be

Slightly ahead of the club head this is square up this is straight up this is left hand leading remember you want the left hand to lead the club head into the impact area when I chip I chip by feel but I’m always looking at a particular spot on

The green to where I want to chip the ball to land the ball there and let the ball roll in this particular instance you’ll see a a white spot when I try when I set up here I try to land the ball on that spot and let the ball roll to the

Hole take the break get up to the hole there now my good friend Byron Nelson said one of the key things in making a good Chip Shot is you have to have a little bit of a lower leg action to make it work you

May you need to do that so that you can carry your left hand through the impact area if you have straight legs and they don’t move what happens going through your left hand breaks down like this and all sorts of bad things can happen remember what Byron Nelson said you must

Have the legs active in the Chip Shot to carry the left hand through the impact area like this to review the basic Chip Shot you must grip down to the club consistently with each Club you’re chipping with number two light grip pressure you want to feel the club head you want to feel

The club head number three start Square to the aim line which is that white dot there let’s open our body the whole body knees hips shoulders let’s close our hips and shoulders keeping our feet right there weight on the Left Foot Right knee kind of kicked

In just a little bit and watch the lower body work

  1. Light grip pressure is so important. Ever since i learned this from this channel my game has gone to another level. I never understood saying "by feel" untill Tom Watson.
