On Sunday, Nick Dunlap became the first amateur player to win a PGA Tour event in 33 years! The University of Alabama sophomore also won the 2023 US Amateur and the 2021 US Junior Amateur championships… in other words, he’s got a very bright future!
The last player to accomplish this feat was Phil Mickelson, and so in today’s video we’re going to compare their swings to see what we can learn.
Phil Mickelson is one of the most talented players we’ve seen, and while his swing has worked great for him, it’s not one I would recommend most amateurs emulate.

Boy I am so glad you guys are enjoying these weekly videos and we’ve got a fantastic one with this week’s winner Nick Dunlap youngest amateur in a long time 33 years to win a PJ Tour event we’re going to compare him to Phil Mickelson and you’re going to see
There’s somebody that you want to swing like and some of the that you probably don’t want to swing like we’ve got a great tip that’s really going to help your golf game today and make sure you stick around towards the end I’m going to show you exactly the drills and the
Feels to steal some of what Nick Dunlap did this weekend to CT after that PJ Tour event stick around look at this fantastic golf swing in Nick Dunlap right oh to be young and full of confidence again but what can we learn from these amateurs that won at a young age right
So here’s the original one of the youngest amateurs to ever win a professional event in Phil Mickelson right and what you’ve got to remember about Phil is he’s got more talent in his pinky finger than you and I have in our entire body he had a putting and chipping Green
In his backyard from when he was just a little baby his Pro his brother and sister both played professional golf so when taking a look at these two swings right we see a lot of similarities for a brief moment in time here watch as they both get near the top
And you know what I’m talking about in particular is this lead wrist position as they get near the top of back swing right you can kind of see Phil and Nick not a whole lot of difference yet right and that being kind of the key the key term there but watch
When mikkelson transitions the club his his arms are going to run on obviously into a longer swing the trail arm is going to overfolded that lead wrist so watch that glove hand as he comes down you notice as he’s getting to the top right his wrist is pretty flat it goes into more
More and more and more extension as he transitions that club into the downswing okay so you can see at this point that lead wrist is fairly extended right here where his forearm meets his glove hand so the difference in Nick right and this is what I would definitely be
Prescribing to more of my students he’s a he’s able to keep the lead wrist flexed to Flat as he transitions that Golf Club so there’s a huge difference in the position of the shaft early in the downswing right notice the difference in the lead wrist there and
Take a look here at these amateur golfers that I’ve seen and just how prominent it is in having a shaft that transitions too Steep and that leads into early extension casting coming over the top flipping all these different problems now the thing with Phil Mickelson right because of that Talent level that he
Displays he’s able to Square this up because he’s so Cocky and Confident all at the same time he can make this work and he has made it work for an amazing number of years but look at the amount of rotation through the ball with his hands because of what happened there at
The top now Nick’s not going to do that he’s going to be able to rotate through the golf ball and maintain a good amount of spine angle just because that position coming down you can even see to this point the lead wrist is still flat the trail wrist
Is bent the face is very strong right most players are not getting to that position the face is much too open the shaft is much too steep so just going through the hitting area here this is as good as anybody right and that’s something that if I can help my students
Get to that position and I’ve got a great drill coming here real soon you’re going to see the ball go much farther and much straighter on a consistent basis so I’ve got my hack motion wrist sensor on here and we’re going to just take a look at just how fickle this lead
Wrist position can be because remember it’s what controls the club phase right so take a look at right here my lead wrist right on hack motion is at Plus 8 degrees right so that’s eight degrees of extension in my lead wrist okay and if I start to go to where Phil Mickelson went
At the top and I see so many students doing that where they go for a little extra back swing a little extra range motion to swing the club faster now I’m extended 32° okay doesn’t look too bad as he starts to transition and come down you notice that same extension in that wrist
At 30° so that’s not what Nick was doing Nick got to the top and he’s putting a force on and the force is coming through the trail arm right going external and the right wrist bending back that’s what’s actually keeping the lead wrist flat most people think it’s you’re doing
This with your lead hand this is our dominant hand right we want to use that to control this top of back swing position so he’s getting to the top in a slightly Flex position I’m about –2g -3 and then as he transitions the lower body you notice how I’m
Keeping that number negative it even goes more negative which is what we see the best golfers in the world doing there’s so many of you out there that are getting this to extend slightly at the top and then it’s starting down with extension and that’s wreaking a host of
Problems coming down so the only thing I would say is get to the top make sure you’re bent over it’s really crucial for you to feel this in a bent over posture most people that try to do this like this up here that’s not where you’re
Going to be in a real golf swing so tip over turn and then start to just work that feeling of bringing that trail arm in and flexing that lead wrist now once you’ve done that well you can see I’m at a pretty good negative transition your
Lower body and keep it that’s so crucial in hitting nice powerful draws with a stronger face and just good body action to really give us some more power and consistency I hope that helps it sure helped Nick Dunlap I will see you all next week thanks for watching if you’re
Looking for even more ways to take your golf swing to the next level then I’ve got just the thing for you I’ve put together a three-part web class where I reveal the exact formula I use to take my students from complete hackers to the type of golfers who comp confidently

phil is a LEFTY
Cameron Smith does it like Phil and Vijay….stable body more ROC on the clubface vs more stable clubface and more rotary pivot. Amazing.
Thanks Zach for another insightful mini lesson.
I thought Phil was left handed?
Phil is a lefty???
