The PGA TOUR returns to the mainland this week for the 65th annual playing of The American Express. This event is the first multi-course event of the season. Justin Thomas will be teeing it up for the first time this year, his first appearance in La Quinta since finishing T7 in 2015. He’ll be looking to replicate the form which saw him claim three-straight top-fives worldwide after missing out on the FedExCup Playoffs. Scottie Scheffler will also be in California this week and has three top-25 results at The American Express in his career highlighted by a solo third in 2020. He also managed a T5 at The Sentry two weeks ago. Min Woo Lee will also like his chances this week in the Coachella Valley as he concluded 2023 as one of the hottest on the planet with a pair of wins worldwide highlighting a stretch of five-straight top-15s. Others to look out for are Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Will Zalatoris.

From hunsville Alabama please welcome Nick [Applause] dorfy old sophomore at the University of Alabama he won the US Amer the US junor the Northeast am the North and South he’s a walker copper but winning a PGA Tour event John that is downright Historic next on the tea from shreport Louisiana please welcome Sam bur get the right distance with the high he tough to work with distance that’s a very good shot going be a quip strike down the hill how’s this distance control go very good it’s all right yes indeed

And I like what he did there he was a little concerned with what was left of this flag so to open up that right hand flag takes a lot of discipline I mean I know that was an awkward stance and line everything else so much speed watching

Him hit these little shots on the Range he he slows it down and dials it in really impressive I would say so look at this a kick in to get to 28 under and it flipped pretty quickly didn’t it if he had to lay up and he s

JT and S burs with irons and that’s fantastic and John’s so right with the wedge game DJ even Justin Thomas was about the slowing down the arm swing which then controls the spin and you know you got the nerves in the adrenaline that one bounced just at the end of The

Fringe yeah one is by an uncomfortable length that was a lot of Fringe and Shadow Over the Hole too can be a little disconcerting is you went in with confidence and Pace yeah and now if you’re Nick dlap right now you need a case of amnesia for what happened back at the

7th it’s a new game now reset and move forward a textbook there you had to really tip your cat to him you know after that what looked like kind of a shank off 17 what about back this would be not much breaking this putt here straight back up the

Hill Nick Dunlap not going away not going to give this thing away easily a clutch is that he’s been using that cutter for years um looks like he’s going right at it [Applause] very very nice an aggressive play that’s a heck of a shot look at this contact I

Mean he had all kinds of things that uh it make you just be a little imprecise you know ball below his feet it it looked like it was sitting in sort of a rake Ridge certainly didn’t look to be setting great what a bow oh we saw his college

Coach JC will is here and he’s stand standing by with steeper well there’s a ridge that bisect the screen 101 carries that Ridge as wood he mentioned that last third of the green runs away from the player 108 total flights it down this is definitely going to have some

Spin yeah there it is beautiful 15 20 25 ft short R of the flag is what you’re looking for good one very good good for weight as they like to [Applause] say yes on a very good line if it’s enough oh yeah wavered by his walk or anything

Like that he is stayed in the moment keeping through his routine even though things aren’t going his way look at’s got that made some big pots hasn’t he yeah he does he’s got that onew putting stroke you know just pop so full of confidence back on the 15th

Dunlap struggled to find the Fairway today one back you’d love to work this ball from left to right Fairway slops in that direction as well this is a pearl here for Dunlap our trackman Tracer technology as that splits the Fairway on 15 you know that might just be the swing

That puts him right back even brandle could see the flag stick from here right in the center of the Fairway oh yeah right there kisses the stay what a show we’re seeing obvious early with some mistakes but to see him come back with that birdie at three that

Shot from the right bunker at the 10 that backed up birdie at the at the 14th and then this shot right down the [Applause] pipe J Sewell was you know last night talking to Bentley Roma just talking to him oh yeah easy easy oh yeah has not been intimidated all day long oh

Yeah two from about 10 ft away after Burns he made his I mean right on top of burns at the 14th Burns not making birdie here that buts a tie for the lead eight yards to play with pass that if adrenaline comes into it but nowhere right of the middle of this

Green and if it fades it fades right okay e come on come on come on excellent not quite done history in the desert for the first time since 1991 and Amer is won on the PGA tour Nick Dunlap wins the American Express wow [Applause] thanks for watching the PGA Tour on

  1. Sucks cuz he doesnt even get paid at all since hes an amateur. That $1.5 mil goes to second place Bezuidenhout, he was probably thrilled he didnt have to fight for a playooff lmao. Either way great accomplishment and hes got quite the future. But like come on if you win you should get the prize regardless you still beat everyone fair and square.

  2. PGA and LIV need to come to terms for the sake of golf. With much less competition and seeing the same names over and over gets boring because of the divided talents. Wouldn't be surprised if the actual viewership numbers has taken a nosedive. Sigh…

  3. Did he get any winnings for this, or because he’s an amateur he doesn’t get anything?

  4. You got a great kid in Dunlap there…. would be a shame if we offered him $100M when he turns pro… -LIV

  5. This just shows how backwards the pga tour is. When amateurs win they don’t receive the prize money and it goes to second place. What an absolute joke

  6. The PGA tour gives him the break, the opportunity and the framework to make his way in the elite game. Watch and wait for LIV to circle though. The way this young man reacts to winning and NOT taking home the winners cheque says everything about what golf is and should be.

  7. Correct me if wrong, but the last player to win as a amateur was Phil Mickelson. Interestingly both won in the desert.

  8. not an alt-field event even. he had pretty much the entire presidents cup (both sides) in his rear view mirror and in position to run him down, and still got it done. ive never seen anything like this.

  9. I love this for the tour, but there’s just no way this guy WINS a pga tournament with no professional experience – sort of shows pga tour is wide open bc of LIV.

  10. Everyone loves a Tin Cup moment when the little guy does well, all congratulations to him.

It's only possible on these drive + wedge courses that the PGA sets up for low scoring. It makes for good showreels and lots for the crowd to get excited about, but if an amateur is averaging -7,25 per round over an event, it's too easy. It's why I love the US Open, where only the world's very best are there on a Sunday scoreboard. The rest are simply "surviving" on a course that's set up to bite back, much more exciting to watch…
