Welcome back to the channel guys I’m Gary Martin and today we’re playing at Willow Valley Golf and Country Club with Mark and it’s going to be a match with my set from the 1970s and Mark set from 2024 and we’re going to play off sticken you’re off five aren’t you m normally

4.4 to Big yeah uh we’re going to be playing six hes here on the back nine yeah off stick and we’re going to have a match see if we can beat mark would Norm how many shots would you get around here usually uh I think I’d get six back te’s

On this course yeah now having looked through the bag I’m not too dissatisfied with the irons but the woods that looks like a different Bard the woods are definitely going to make a difference for you yeah we’re going to be playing with a 1970s ball the Dunlop 65 there’s

No I’m not going to I’m not going to use a laser I’m going have to pace things out um I was just asking Mark about bags when when did they actually put stands on bags yeah stands the um they probably didn’t start appearing till late 8s

Early ’90s and U the original Stand bags were retrofitted so you’d get an ordinary bag like that and You’ clip a stand onto it it uh it does certainly feel a bit odd putting bag just down on floor but I’m going to give you the honor right and we’re opening up I think

It’s about 340 yard power four is it I believe so yeah we’ll pop that on screen now and all the best right have a good game I’ve got me mix onday it’s pretty it’s pretty cold it but we are on greens might be using a fairway wood here if we’re not careful

It’s so the ad well it looks like we’ve got a bit of a a lake and a bit of a a run out but I can’t measure it no you can’t and I’m not telling you I’m going to have to guess that one of the disadvantages in 1970s and 80s I guess

There were no sort of lasers or GPS’s no there weren’t no you uh you had to work forwards or backwards from your 150 marker you struggling to get that one I am really struggling to get it in yeah great drive it’s a peer straight that middle he’s not

Shy right I’m going to unwrap a brand new Dunlop 65 and we were saying weren’t we we can’t believe that they don’t still rra balls like this yeah see used to be a great feeling standing on the first two wrapping a new ball do you think that

Will have aged in packet was that a thing or no yeah they did used to age I mean there’s every possibility that that might explode when you right you’ll just did a uh I might go forward think I’m going to go forward if I can get that teen enough

Well I think this first shot is going to set the tone for the day because I’ve never ever played with a Pim Golf Club on a golf course and I can tell you now if I don’t catch this out the middle I’m fearing for my fingers I’m already they’re already feeling

Pain I’ll tell you what it’ll do you it’s come out like a mile right so after a good first shot we’ve got a 150 just in front of us here which are measured to middle at Green what did the spin like these balls cuz greens are quite furb today aren’t they

Yeah they’re um they were they were pretty spinning nothing nothing like as good as a Pro V1 would be now but uh certainly better than a pinnacle or a Top Flight or such like I’m going to go a I think Eight’s going to probably carry about 140 well actually the traditional LS

Aren’t they yeah they are yeah that’s like a 79 there’s nothing for short here there’s nothing for long it’s a bit of a oh it’s a bit thin just better watch that oh I’ve got lucky there oh you spanny booger it’s jumped up onto front of it’s actually finished hit the

Banking and come up T P Green oh it’s a tad fin it needs to buy that’s awful just run out back he might be able to just spot mark it back left corner he got himself in a bit of trouble oh dear not going to be very happy with

That that’s a great shot Mark fantastic it’s a lovely morning here at Willer Valley if you’ve not played here before they don’t go to temp greens which is uh brilliant for winter golf right topper in for a right for a a five it’s not a bad five in end well

Done right I could have two puts for a win here you could it’s a go one up with the 1970s clubs I picked the uh if you want to see what’s in the bag guys we did a video earlier which I’ll tag where we had a completely look through the bag

And Mark you know told us a little bit about you know why he bought it and some interesting points actually a pink putter one thing you will notice with the putters that were a lot longer then it does feel longer actually it feels about 36 in 35 I think

Yeah oh dear probably Club selection yeah definitely right this is For the Win dollied It Right tied with five right on to the next right yeah so if anybody from Golf Pride ever sees this video bring back the victory grip i’ would agree greatest grip ever it’s uh I think them Classics especially

When there’s like a guide put your thumbs on yeah I think it’s a shame that they don’t do that anymore it is yeah yeah and they also used to do this in a half card in a full card version which again you never see carded grips are very rarely

Nowadays right I think I let you off a bit there Mark I think you did yes so we’ got about 340 yard par for slight dog leg left to right so I think you got to hit in between the two bunkers great shot nice little draw it’s going to come round into the

Middle right it’s time for the the big dog the big dog which is not that big the little big dog yeah did you used to call it a big dog back in day uh no we didn’t I can’t remember when that when we first started describe that

Expression let the big dog eat did they get bigger and bigger even like in 60s and 70s or what no no they were pretty much pretty much standard size right up until uh more or less at the same time Callaway brought out the original big bir yeah and Wilson brought out the

Killer whale and they were the first two real uh oversized drivers one question how I did you use to te it half a b half General thinking were pretty much as it is now half a ball above the top of the club head right God I can’t get them up in under the

Wind it’s under wind all right I can’t launch it did you get up on it or down on it uh you used to pretty much not hit up as much as you do do nowadays let’s just um Nostalgia s got a small ball a 65 you

Want a 65 no I’ll just hit it with this one see what uh see if I can still hit it you just forget how small they are well that your gamer then yeah it was yeah what were you playing off with them uh probably low low teens 11 12 13 yeah

Yeah I got down to single figures for the first time in the uh early 90s all right show off is it a nice soft draw be interesting to see cuz he’s used the current ball the difference in distance between that shot and you know your first drive yeah if that one’s gone

Further I’m going to be a bit tail right so Marx just stood where at 150 is and I think we got about 180 uph I think I’m going to hit a 5 a and it’s got to carry most at away that could be great oh my God that’s not even got to

The bottom of Bank it that were perfectly on live at Green it’s just come up short sorry yeah so after 50 years of driver Innovation that’s incredible yeah we’ve got 4T difference I mean so that’s why we need to roll back the ball guys unbelievable we’ve got 131 to the

Middle it’s a back pin so 140ish dry cut a little bit left oh it is now it’s took a bad bounce nice bounce SHP pin High it might just bounce a bit too much that one look it oh to it in that’s going to be a five bgy golf a minute look

Okay so 14 for a little bit longer 407 this is where I might starts to struggle a little bit on these longer par fours oh it’s a bit right think come just in trees lovely drive that’s a monster that could be uh that could be 150 yards past mine

One bonus about not in a long way is you sometimes don’t reach trees we’re going to measure up next door actually how far I’m itting this off te cuz I don’t think that’s more than 220 I don’t think it is no I think that’s about 220 yards of it that which is

Embarrassing I’m going to have to hit a faw just to get down there I’m guessing that water’s probably about 220 so I don’t think I can get there with this oh that’s a beautiful strike strike that were lovely really got all that that that three out think that’s what you call out

At screws yeah literally yeah that went forward right Mark’s got 140 in a frost green strike it’s coming in a bit oh just got over no it didn’t I don’t think I don’t think we could have chosen hard of course with these Frost greens no carrying water when you’ve got a

Frozen Green’s not easy oh God uh distance wise it’s going to have to go in high can’t see no I mean cuz obviously everyone has these lasers now there’s not like 50 yard or 100 yard marks anymore that the to be I’m going to have a guess uh that it’s about 60

Yards I’m anywhere near 88 to the middle 88 88 Jesus oh it’s high good have the legs oh it’s actually big just gone through back steady steady oh could have left it short dear me could have left it short you want to have a break or do you

Want to finish yeah I’ll make it oh look it a double you got yours for the wind then do you want it in or out take it out please look okay so question just sprung to mind when you bought this driver yeah in well how much did it cost if you can you

Remember how much it actually cost brand new it’s a tour staff say it it was it was a birthday present so I didn’t buy it myself but I think for a top driver back in early 80s you’d probably be looking about 40 to 50 and in like relation to

Today’s money do you know roughly what that would be I would guess probably about 200 I mean your big price heke came when the metal woods yeah came in I mean the the tailor made burner to Preferred which is the one that uh showed you on the earlier video

That I think they jumped up to about1 pound right so more 400b region of today and and how long did you keep these in the club cuz obviously Technology Innovation they say improves every year were it like that back then back in the day no it didn’t I mean rather than

Technology it just used to be marketing the the Chang I mean you they were a current club for probably well over 10 years no way yeah you’d never get that in today’s market would you so would they release another driver the year after though no no so they just just different campaigns yeah

That’s that’s incredible isn’t it yeah to think that you know they didn’t bring a driver every year what’s interesting as well you’ve no um youve no mention of the Loft on it yeah CU drivers back then were just drivers you didn’t have a 9° or a 10 and 1/2 degree or a

12° they all ran out at about probably 11 12° hell it’s 330 on card just looks a long way he going a persist with driver great Drive yeah took a nice right I’m going to see if I can get up there with you it’s Bend it’s it’s it’s seem

Fairway you know what I like about that though although it cut it’s still like more controll than modern driver well we’ll see as well as equipment changing though I think swings have changed over the years as well so if you look at the old pictures of Nicholas and Watson when had

What’s called the reverse C finishes where you back very like that that’s a great point which was a lot that’s how they probably got it up in the air is it I’m going to try that on the last door yeah it it was a lot worse wearing tear wise for your back

Yeah right Mark how far you got in got 18 um 141 I think 141 141 yeah look here wonder if the coldness is causing them to be definitely definitely playing a part so I’m a similar distance guys I’m going to hit a six iron it’s up intert wind we reckon that

Driver has gone about 210 yards up Ear it’s a bit wet and Ball’s not rolling but still not gone very far oh that’s a lovely flight B the club it might be a bit long that one I think that’s big yeah nice idea I was just looking through bag

There mark for a L wedge did you used to have a lob wedge no did they have L they been invented then ping ping brought out the first lob wedge in probably about 8 sish yeah just that to open sandwi up then yeah it’ll do yet it will lovely shot oh dear

Right you’ve got that for a win to get back to level yeah solid Well Done Right it’s your honor Mark right and it’s saying scorecard is saying let’s have a look well it’s saying 170 but I don’t think it’s a lot less than that we’ve got one 4 five yeah was the

Shar I’m Gone the hell St there same both just short I think you starting to work it out Mark yeah gr there shot well done not so good one problem with these old pings yeah you could never keep it secret from your opponent what club you were playing oh yeah you can’t

No can’t complain about me equipment it’s about you could get it day is it it is Dunlop 65 ball pink putter can’t be blaming the equipment guys I’ll tap here that’s something that hadn’t been invented back in the 70s as well what’s that left below right put really yeah

You very very rarely had people putting KAC anded then right this for the par and the win to go one up we one to play he’s got it OHS oh nearly injured Mark’s giving up trying to put a peg in and he’s going to go free with off deck solid well done

Strike that reverse C definitely helps you get it up do it yeah right I’m going to with that path on the left just try and get it over the water might regret this one that’s the best stri we’ll have a look when we get down there I think it’s up near that

Path mark just measured up at 120 nice distancing a lovely strike it might just be missing on left hand side though oh it took a lovely kick right did it never saw it land I think it’s just gone off back Edge right right we think Mark’s pretty

Close so we’re going to have we’re going to have to do some special I think the laa Port unlucky it’s about as least we can say marks weren’t as close as we thought it were actually a bit of duck fluff we got quite a bit of fluff on greens

If that’s what you call it a bit of meat on that I’m afraid I’ll give you that we’re starting to think that the rubber bands might have exploded in here aren’t we we are indeed yeah it’s starting to lose shape and certainly lost color as well it’s not looking that

Well good job the golf ball equivalent of me yeah right get in oh unlucky right well I think that’s my first part of the round so you’ve got that for the win mark oh so after six holes Mark we couldn’t be split no I think this has set us up for

Another Vlog I think it definitely has yeah I think it would be an injustice not to use these clubs on a warm day in better conditions so we’re going to come back we’re going to have a rematch but what we’re going to do we’re both going to play with the 1970s clubs hopefully

Mark can show us how to play with them properly yeah be a bit of nostalgia for me but we’re going to play off handicap so we’ll come back will do another Vlog I think there’s one thing I’ve learned today and you mentioned it part way through the Vlog it were that

The GOL swing were different the swing’s changed over the years yeah just have what’s called a reverse C finish there well I was struggling to launch that ball and as soon as you mentioned that I do actually remember seeing pictures of Nicholas you know looking like this and

That last shot there you know it will like proper good ball fly um so I’m looking forward to coming and having another round with him I mean I tell you what I would just saying to you off camera though if uh if I’d have got into

Golf in 1970s I don’t know if I’d have persisted with it no it certainly certainly a much harder game than it is now I mean I’ve hit a couple of drives and they were like two 200 220 yeah it’s a bit demoralizing but uh no we’ve really

Enjoyed it if you’ve got any questions for more get in get in the comments Yeah by all means and I’ll do my best and he’ll do his best to answer me seeing it all um and well Alex has been telling us what sort of collection you’ve got home

So you never know you might get to see he’s a little bit of a collector and I think he’s got a few hidden gems guys thanks for watching make sure you hit the Subscribe button and we’ll see you in a few days time bye

  1. I remember strap on stands, and the cross wood contraption that went in the bag, you took it out, crossed it and braced it against the bag. The 70’s driver on the first had the flight I remember, you relied on top spin run out.

  2. The guide for grips was called “Gripright”, they came as standard on most clubs in the late 70’s

  3. Gauging distance by eye, is a lost skill as is hitting a club to the distance away rather than how far the club goes. We had two wedges, PW and SW, eventually the 10 iron was introduced, followed by PW and SW, you had to manufacture shots, based on sight, feel, conditions on the day and your preferred option, we had much more control, rather than just using the club. Also my club pro would play with the lofts for you, I worked in the pro shop, cleaning, re gripping, whipping grips and heads, changing the sole plates for the new season, for this I had free lessons, and club manipulation that suited my game, as a consequence I carried two SW, one was lofted like a lob wedge.

  4. Well played Gary, you definitely need to play again in better conditions.
Victory Green grips might have been good when they were new but after 40 or 50 years they're among the slippiest I come across, and they're the worst to get off as they become rock hard and have to be broken off in pieces. (I hate them 🙂 )

  5. I’d like to see you play with these clubs in the summer when the greens are more receptive and purer to putt on,also distance gauging is a lost art now. Good viewing though.

  6. You say it was a bit demoralising, what you have to remember is you are thinking of the standards of today, one thing that has drastically changed is it’s now a game open for everyone!! Back then it was a hobby of the rich not plebs like us 😂

  7. This is where modern golf has become EASIER… less forgiving golf clubs and know HOW FAR You can hit each club without using a laser and visualing length to the greens with your EYES..😂😂😂😂

  8. Enjoyed the video. The early TM Burners were actually smaller than the contemporary wooden woods due to the weight of the metal. Heads only started to increase in size in the early to mid '90's as titanium came into use. Price wise, I paid £50 for a MacGregor Super Eye o Matic persimmon driver in 1985. From memory, TM Burners were around £75 at that time but, in terms of technology, they were more like £125 with "boron" shafts. Big money in those days!

  9. You should definitely bring Mark back on channel from time to time Gaz. Seems like a class lad and a good player. Nice fun challenge to watch today, and good scores too for being able to putt on skates 😂

  10. Great Video Gary. I like watching Mark play. He's got a great swing. A mix between Tony Finau and Lee Trevino. I think you're very brave giving him 5 shots. 😛

  11. Actually Mark…Golf Pride has brought back the “V55” ( Black and Yellow ) in cord and in rubber. For a limited time. They are not officially released yet I don’t think, but soon. There’s info online about them on My Golf Spy. There’s also rumors of a surprise Grip Rite ( Black and Green ) release. Those are the ones that Mark held up.
Great video ! I look forward to a rematch!

  12. Love the video, the nostalgia factor is through the roof, I was born in the 80s and my dad had old Ping irons with Wilson woods, as an early teen I use to take them up to our local football fields and play from goal to goal, (access to a golf course wasn’t an option growing up in a council estate with no money) I remember the sting in the hands when I hit it wrong,
My favourite thing was the old ping putter, it was almost like ringing a bell when you hit it,
My Dad use to clean it with Brasso

  13. I should put a set like that together send just go out and have fun with it. I have a set of persimmons and some 88 Hogan redlines. Since I don’t have old balls, maybe use some Wilson Duos or something. Might be fun.

  14. Great to see you up at Willow Valley lads, hope Mark enjoyed his return as well.
The woods were particularly hard to hit back then – as a junior I opted for a 2 wood as I just could not get a driver in the air.

Maybe do a vlog off the very back tees up there with the 70's equipment Gaz, the course is designed for the distances modern clubs go so it would be interesting to see how challenging making pars would be on a course designed to meet the needs of modern tech.

  15. Great stuff Gary. Playing wi5h vintage clubs can be such enjoyable rounds. Try using a soft modern ball, like a Wilson Duo or the Callaway Supersoft.
