Ben Hogan Coat Hanger Trick

Several Malaska Golf Members have had questions about Ben Hogan and what he did with his clubs. Ben used to take a coat hanger and measure the length of the club handle against a metal coat hanger. He would then clip off the hanger, just barely the length of the grip.

He would then put that on the back of the club shaft and tape it on the club handle. Mike demonstrates this. Ben did this because when he gripped the club, he could feel a ridge on the handle with his fingers. Mike shows how he put the club in the crease of his fingers where the second knuckle of the hand is. Mike closes his hand over the club and grips it.

This is a really great way to get a feel of putting your hand on the club. The coat hanger helps you feel the ridge in your fingers. When you have a round handle, it’s hard to feel the back of the club relative to your hands.

Hogan also set the hanger a little off-center so that the clubface was slightly open when he gripped the club. This is a great way to feel the club in your hands.

Some companies like Lamkin have a reminder grip on the handle; however, they show the handle going into the third crease of the fingers instead of the second crease. It is the second crease where your knuckles are. When you wrap your hand around the club, you have the strongest finger-hand lever system you can create in the golf swing.

Using a coat hanger is a great tool to help you practice and feel the back of the club shaft with your fingers.

We’ve had this question come up a couple of times about Hogan and how he used to what he used to do to his clubs and what Hogan used to do is he took a coat hanger like this and what he would do is he would measure the coat hanger and he would clip

Off he’d clip the coat hanger off just barely the length of the grip so we take that he clip it off then he would take the coat hanger and he would put it on the back of his shaft so I’m going to do this on the top of my grip so he

Would put the coat hanger right exactly on the back of the club okay so I’m going to put another piece of tape about in the middle of the grip over the coat hanger so now now this coat hanger is right straight up and down the very back of the shaft thank you for

Watching this video I know it’s going to help your game remember to comment on the videos like subscribe and turn on notifications to watch for new molaska golf videos coming your way and then what Hogan would do is he’d put that on his clubs on the on the shaft and then

He’d put his grip over the top of it so now when I take a hold of it there’s a ridge in the grip that coat hanger creates a ridge so now I’ve got this coat hanger right down the back of the shaft and when I take my hand you see

When I make make that little crease this second knuckle right there that’s where I’m going to put the coat hanger so now I’m going to turn the hanger and put it right in that crease then I’m going to close my fingers and put my hand down

Over the club that’s a really good way to get a feel for how you put your hand on the club and I can feel exactly where that Ridge is in my fingers see when you just have a round grip it’s kind of hard to tell exactly where the back of the

Club is relative to your hands now Hogan did that and he set the hanger a little off center so the club face when he put it where he wanted in his fingers the face was slightly open but this is a good way for you to put a coat hanger

Down the back of the shaft tape it on there with some just some basic adhesive tape and then feel where that ridges and get that Ridge in this slot right here now one of the mistakes that the companies that make when they do some of the videos on they have a reminder grip

Lamin has a great one that has a reminder in the back of the grip but when they show the reminder they show it going up here into this part of their hand right there that’s not where it goes It goes in the other knuckle in my

Fingers so now that Ridge is in my fingers and now I fold my hand down and now I’ve got the strongest possible finger hand lever system I can create in the GOL swing so this becomes a really good way to practice to feel where the

Back of the club shaft is with that coat hanger right up and down the back of the shaft hi I’m Mike molaska go to molas golf.com to take a look at the M system this is the most important part of the site because it’s a process it goes

Skill number one task number one and it takes you through the golf swing rather than randomly being out there trying to put it together which virtually hardly anybody figures that one out so make sure you go to malasag golf.com sign up so you can see how to really build your

Game the right way so you don’t ever lose it again

  1. I love ribbed grips on my irons, but it is difficult to find undersized ribbed grips. (I have really small hands.)

  2. He might have been one of the World’s greatest golfers, but personally he wasn’t a pleasant person. I grew up in Ft. Worth, TX., where he resided.

  3. Or you can face the target, have the club on the left side of you square towards the target and grip it with your left hand

  4. Good video. I'll have to try this the next time I regrip. I am curious to why the dumbass in the ball picker rig felt the need to back up though. That's a very good way to break it.

  5. If you are a right hand golfer and your left hand thumb is slightly on weak side (on top of the golf grip rather than pointed slightly to the right), wouldn’t the rib in the golf grip have to sit at approximately 1:00 in order for your fingers to rest on the grip as Mike suggests?

  6. I agree… put a set of GolfPride 'Align' grips on your clubs. GolfPride nailed it with the Align grips. There's no better grip on the market. The ridge should be along the last joint near your finger-tips of your Left/lead hand. Extremely important.

  7. Hi Mike, I see a lot of videos on Right Side bend but I don't see this mentioned in any of your videos. Can you comment or do a video. Thanks
