Where I think they’ve kind of firmly entrenched themselves especially after a win last night in Columbus against Ohio State as the number two team in the Big 10 now they’re the only team undefeated right now in the league but we we both know produ probably gonna end up winning

The league but yes but AJ store huge huge transfer portal pickup under underrated you got a bunch of dudes that that have played with each other for a couple years why is this Wisconsin team so good you know so what the way I’m looking at this season is um it’s a

Little bit different so 2014 when I played we made the final four they got rid of the Dead weight which was me and then they made the national championship game so they they they had the experience and then knew they could do it the next year last year I mean

They’re bringing back 80% of the guys 80% of scoring they add store they add Blackwell um store being a transfer Blackwell being a Freshman and so when you look at that they went through so much last year they lost a million close games and then they lost a close game in

The NIT semifinals you bring back all that experience and then you bring back a boost in store and a and a and a playmaker Off the Bench in Blackwell they’re it’s crazy to say they’re more efficient offensively than defensively uh and that’s not something we typically hear from Wisconsin team so being able

To travel with offense knowing that you still have defense as an identity in your overall you know team I think has made a huge difference for them um you know taking that experience of close losses adding pieces I mean stores ridiculous like Chucky Chucky heer’s throwing a lob off the backboard to AJ

Store and I’m thinking is this the same Wisconsin team and is this the same state that I live in what world am I in yeah he’s a little more athletic than uh you Frank Sam Decker maybe had some hops but the rest of you guys couldn’t really jump much higher than than I

Could all right big news yesterday and it kind of had been circulating for a week or two uh Michigan point guard Doug McDaniel uh he announced it first and then the school announced that he’s suspended for the next six Road games I think he said maybe six Road games I’m

Not sure Michigan put a timetable on it but basically he can’t play um he can’t play in the next six roow games but he can play at home all right so Jan Howard basically quote said when we are away uh when we are away from man Arbor Doug will work towards meeting several

Academic goals he has set and needs to meet um this comes on the heels of uh a a crazy year in which last week Jan lets Phil Martelli his assistant coach a game uh back in his home state and home uh city of Philadelphia uh Jan had gotten

Into it with John Sanderson their strength coach a few weeks ago Sanderson still not back with the program probably won’t be back with the program Jawan had heart surgery in the off season Michigan is awful all right I’m not gonna ask you about the overall I want to know your thoughts on this

Doug McDaniel only being suspended for road games what do you think of this it’s one of the most outrageous things I’ve ever heard in my entire life um I actually think if I’m being honest you you have more of an opportunity to control the environment around helping a

Student athlete on the road than you do when you were at home we were all 18 and 22 years old if you are at home you have access to friends you have access to you know people you want to hang out with you have access to parties you have

Access to everything in the world because that’s why you go to college to experience everything the one thing I do know is you have enough staff especially at a a school like the University of Michigan to bring academic advisors to spend more time oneon-one if it if this

If this really is academic to make sure you’re working on that so I actually think it should be opposite if they if they were going to do a home road but if anything Like [Applause] Aete or the student or the athlete whatever the three combinations you think he needs to be that’s what you got to do yeah just another kind of baffling decision and uh honestly poor decision making uh more you know bad uh press for this Michigan program but luckily I

Don’t think anybody in ant Arbor really cares right now what’s going on in men’s basketball because they’re still celebrating about what happened on the football field the other night uh but for Jo Howard definitely they’re not lighting candles for uh for Jim Harbaugh because he brought him a championship un

Like Alabama Who’s acting as if uh sav’s gone yeah no no doubt about it all right coming up Doug comes back I don’t know if I want him back uh Ben you did a hell of a job you brought our our shot numbers up you brought our ratings up

But we got to bring Douglas uh back to the fold here and we check in on some of the top transfers in the new teams was the grass really greener on the other side not and more next Goodman versus goly [Applause] he He He He He He I’m telling you goly may never make it back on this show because I’ve destroyed him so many times already this season Ben I think he’s completely tapped out now I don’t think he wants to come back he called it called in the reliever call them the closer but you’re kind of like

Rules let’s talk about some teams that are a little bit under the radar right like we’ve been talking about Purdue and Arizona and Houston and Kansas and some of these teams have gotten a ton of attention this year um give me a team or two that has kind of gone under the radar

Lately maybe in that like 15 to 30ish range that we haven’t been talking as much about that you’re high on that that’s gonna go on a run here pick up some steam and you like come March yeah so this is this is close to

The Fringe uh and it’s a it’s a big name but they haven’t exactly been a top 10 team that everyone’s like wow I like they have it and I think they have it because of the way they’ve been put together together and that is the Baylor Bears uh love the way that they

Responded against BYU was a tight game and they pulled away late but here’s why I love uh the Baylor Bears jacobe Walter right you have that NBA Talent right that we talked about Jeff in the first part of our program when you go on these Road games when you play in these

Neutral sites you’re gonna need that guy that you can go to that can just do things that other guys can’t in college basketball and that’s where they’re going to go to the next level what you also need is a guy with experience I love Jaylen Bridges this Baylor team’s a top five team

Offensively and when they won the National Championship it was because of Davon Mitchell and how good Scott TR Drew’s team was defensively but Jaylen Bridges brings something different to this team he’s scoring he’s uh getting offensive rebounds defending he’s like their he’s like their guy that does it

All and I love that Langston love can shoot the crap out of it so they’re a team that I feel like because of their offensive Firepower they can go on a run at any moment and I Trust Scott drew based off what he has done throughout

The last five years um you know becoming that like top tier head coach in college basketball my second one that I love is I think this team was a well I don’t think I know this team was a Miss call away from going to the final four um but

When you look at Katon Katon last year nard uh got hit on the wrist you move forward right you moved to this year I love hul brener I love that they have a big and I think having a versatile big who can take up space when you are like

This isn’t maybe I’m maybe I think you’re gonna figure out a trend here Jeff it’s I’m picking teams that are good offensively who wants to play defense Trey Alexander baller absolute baller they have tons of guys Ashworth like guys who can shoot space the floor

And a big um and actually I think I think they’re actually top 20 in defensive efficiency which is really good for MC dermit coach team so when I look at two teams I look at the Big East I look at kraton I look at the big 12

Which isn’t you know Baylor’s a big name but uh from where they’re at right now I I see them with their offensive Firepower and their uh experience with the a hybrid in Jaylen Bridges I like those two teams a lot it is no surprise that you pick two

Teams that don’t want to defend at all but just want to score uh score the ball and shoot it well but you know Katon listen the thing that worries me about Katon is you mentioned nehar being gone filling that point guard spot you know Ashworth is small he struggled

Transferring over from Utah State hasn’t been great um you know Baylor to me Ray J Dennis has done a pretty good job like a lot of these guys who transfer up you don’t know what you’re G to get but coming coming from Toledo he’s been terrific I’m gonna give you one I’m

Gonna give you one for me and that’s old Miss to keep an eye on okay they won last night uh bounced back they gotten blasted at Tennessee they went at home against Florida it’s just my trust with Chris beard having some time remember he had two guys become eligible due to the

Uh the two-time transfer uh rule recently Musa ceis about three weeks ago and then Brandon Murray about two weeks ago so he’s added two key pieces to this team they’ve got bigs and C sharp that can really really uh alter the game on the defensive end and now you got

Scorers Jaylen Murray not no relation to Brandon Murray has come in as a transfer low major transfer and he’s been awesome so I just I trust Chris beard here they’re nowhere near they need to be right now they still have to get a lot better but I I feel like Beard’s um his

Track record of of again getting the most out of his team we know he can coach and I think they can kind of sneak up on some people and that league is so good there’s so many resume wins on the table right now that I think Old Miss

They’re 14-1 right now they beat Memphis uh that’s going to be a resume win at the end of the day that’s going to certainly help them all right Ben we’re we’re we’re taking you out of the game your pitch count I think was two segments so we’re we’re we’re pulling

You we’re going to make sure you’re healthy that your arm withstands the rest of the season but again uh thanks for joining us and uh douge is going to be back on the other side of the break to talk about these transfers again that who’s really gotten bang for

Getting he wasn’t there for that final before but um but yeah he he was terrific he shot 39% for his career from three 39 U Benny was good Ben was a good player um and I and I and I I did see most of that last second let’s get into

What you’re were talking about you’re talking about the transfers right because you don’t like Stephen Ashworth you’re you’re clearly anti- Mormon it’s not that I don’t like I don’t not he’s good coming off the bench but we we plugged him in as a starter at kraton and and

No I listen I I I’m gonna agree and disagree okay I think he’s a starting caliber player because a great great shooter and a good player um the question is can you surround him with the right guys like if it was him and just Trey Alexander and then they were a

Little bit more athletic Mason Miller is a good player if they were a little bit different at that fifth starting spot right because yeah Baylor shyan was plenty big enough and have the size of cul BR cul cul brener um I I would feel really really good about it but I I

Don’t feel great about their ability to change you defensively and one thing he pointed out they’re really good defensively at one thing they run you off the line and if we’ve seen some of these results in college basketball it’s been I mean heck Oklahoma State almost

Beat Baylor why they kept them off the three-point line I think they were uh four of 15 right we saw BYU get upset at home when they were 12 of 30 46 from three so some of these teams are so three-point dependent and uh kraton is

Not going to let you shoot threes that just not that you’ll be able to get in lane and you got to deal with caul brener inside but they will not let you shoot Threes And they also they just don’t have great depth they’re really kind of a four-man team and then they

They kind of patch it together their their depth is challenged which I believe is really about their salary cap that that’s kind of what it’s about like you just run out of money you spend you spend money to keep Trey Alexander you spend money to get that’s the reality

You spend a bunch of money to to get Baylor shyan to transfer over a Nebraska kid coming back home you spend a bunch of money to get Ashworth and you’re like all right now what we don’t have a lot of money and also guys don’t want to

Come out the bench because there’s a lot of options so I think there’s a very there’s a very real discussion with these transfers about how you put it all together and it’s not always as simple as I want this big I want this wing I want this guard there’s a lot more that

Kind of goes into it all right so I think we can agree the best transfer Edition has been Hunter Dickinson coming over from Michigan to Kansas although he struggled last night with file trouble uh they lost at UCF um I’m gonna run through a few of these

Guys and you give me kind of their grades for the for the year so far were they an a were they at B what type of pickup were some of these guys I’m going to start with Max Asus going from Oral Roberts to Texas long horns got a big

Win the other day but have been kind of underwhelming for the most part this year uh Asus to Texas what grade do you give that uh a b a b you know like look it all depends on but for Max it’s probably an a from the financial standpoint right

Like that feels like he went to the highest Pitter but in order for him if he was using it to become an NBA player well they already have a small point guard so he doesn’t get to show all the things he can do you can hide him

Defensively or whatever so I think it’s a B I don’t think they’ll win a National Championship I don’t think it really puts his skill set on a higher level on true display because they’re really small in that back court and they got to figure out a way to work it out um but

Again I also think that he probably made a good amount of money cuz Texas is a deep deep well of resources so it’s all how you judge it and if you judge it based upon hey this kid is not an NBA player he’s going to play overseas he’s

Gonna make a bunch of money but he wants to play in college make money now I think then that’s an A but in terms of basketball decisions it’s a bat all right the next one and I agree with you on that one is the lightning rod of all lightning rods in college

Basketball and that’s Caleb BL transferred from North Carolina had a rough year last year went to Arizona after uh nearly getting into Michigan that didn’t work out and that might have really helped the the Wolverines he’s averaging almost 18 points a game Doug five boards three assists he’s still not

The most efficient guy but he’s shooting a whole lot better from the field 44% as opposed to 37 the last two years still doesn’t make threes at a high clip you know he’s defending better and ultimately I’m gonna give this an A minus because I’m going to look at what

Arizona’s done as a team overall and say like he hasn’t rocked the boat and he gives them fills a void that they really needed with a guy that can fill it up make a play off the bounce and they’re not quite as relying on him as they as

Carolina was last year he again he’s playing better within the system that’s what I’ll say so I’m gonna give him an A minus I’m gonna go with that you know and and they’ve been a good they’ve been a very good team and his reputation was as a team killer

So he’s the same player a little bit more efficient and he hasn’t torn apart this team so I don’t know how that could be and and I mean look at the percentages field goal percentage is up scoring is up well fewer minutes per game that’s a much more efficient player

But the big thing is like his reputation was at whether it’s some of the off the court rumors or some of the on the on the court stuff was a team killer and he has not killed his team that’s an a I’ll go solid a with it yeah

Okay yeah that’s fair uh next one Ray J Dennis uh coming in he started his career boys he State didn’t really work out there for him he goes to Toledo and he’s a star in the mac and then he decides in his final year he’s going to

Fill a major void for the Baylor Bears who lost their entire back court uh from a year ago and I think rayj has been I don’t know aim highness again like it’s not often that you go from that mid- major to the high major and your numbers

Don’t fall that much and again Baylor’s been pretty darn good and you know they don’t have like like jacobe Walters been great offensively as a freshman one of the best freshman in the country hasn’t been great defensively I just think like Ray J and Ray J here’s here’s the part

That I love about him he’s Fearless at the end of the game he makes plays when the game is on the line and that to me is something that Scott drew needed for this group uh desperate yeah I I heard your discussion with with Benny and Ben missed the Ray J Dennis

Edition and uh no he’s he’s tremendous and I’m I’m actually blown away by his personal Improvement and you look at the numbers I mean this is what happens when you go from mid major to high major and he’s surrounded by good players but yeah

This is an a um he he fits exactly what they need I mean you look we haven’t we even discussed I don’t think LJ Cryer’s on our list I mean he’s got to be one of the top ones he’s he’s the one guy can

You know blow up you blow up in a game for for Houston shooting the basketball uh but considering you had Jobe Walter who he’s his own story of of improvement right two years ago jacobe Walter didn’t make USA basketball was the under 18 and there are guys on that team that that

Didn’t improve as much he stays home in the summer and gets better and now he’s a lottery pick when he comes out so yeah but back to Ray J Dennis terrific a easy call all right we got a guy next TJ bomba he was part of like a three-man really a

Three-man transfer class in Villanova they spent $3 million on nil a lot of it was to Justin more Eric Dixon but for more to stick around more is hurt right now bomba New York native comes back to the Northeast goes from Washington State uh to Villanova along Tyler Burton goes

From Richmond to Nova hakee Hart Maryland to Nova I’ll give you like my take on bomba like a c he just he’s been okay and their whole group has been okay Tyler Burton Hakeem Hart and Villanova has been up and down so I don’t know how you can

Give bomba or the overall group anything better than a c because you paid him you PID them a ton of money and I don’t think they’ve delivered on what was expected out of bomba and the rest of this group um yeah it’s really hard to to do

Do the Villanova way you know this way this is not how they’ve done things and it’s it goes in direct they and remember they took transfers before when you couldn’t pay guys but they sat out a year and they really got better um his the shooting’s a problem you know the

Field goal percentage is a problem and now it would be fair to say hey we haven’t had all our guys it’s hard to get it all to come together that’s fair okay that’s completely fair or they don’t have a point guard or they don’t have a point guard to help set any of

These guys up right like and I know you you you’ll push back and say well that’s not Villanova’s system and I understand that but system of course of course there Villanova system right I mean well they were their point guard because they always had good point guards right right

No I think it you you don’t push back I think dter and some of the guys and field to 16 back me what I say wrong wrong white guy no no I’m I’m um you know now the way they play the way they play they want their fours and

Fives to be able to face up and handle and and they have that like what’s missing on this team is a point guard I think their shooting percentages would go up I mean Arch deak’s brother is not at that level he’s not as good as his brother I think you know um and

Neither’s Mark Armstrong neither is Mark Armstrong he’s been he’s been the again he’s been he’s a backup point guard that’s what he is they have backup point guards that are forced to start and it makes everything tougher and and so the the two things that are missing from Villanova being Villanova right other

Than Jay Wright is is the complete buyin you know and guys developing which they don’t they don’t have and then I mean look at they won two national championships what they have they had two NBA point guards on one team and one you know Jaylen brunson’s an NBA Allstar

I me they had they were great at the point so I think all those shooting percentage but if we’re just judging and so that is one those guys are hard to get okay the right guys are hard to get in the portal let’s just be honest

Especially a point guard I mean tell me the point guard that transfer that’s in the Northeast that want to be in that part of the country that is the right fit right like would Posh Alexander a fit there probably not I mean like you kind of go through it maybe Posh would

Have uh maybe you know would better he would have been better University of Washington has two right they they got they got two one came from ruter one came from Kentucky so some again it’s about resource allocation who do you know connection with the agent anyway just TJ

Bomba I think C+ B minus is is fine I mean he’s scoring but they’re inefficient and this is a program that prided themselves on being efficient and you know best scorer he’s not a best scorer in a bad team but 35% field goal percentage is suboptimal and so I got to

Give it a seat now I’ll also couch it by saying when they have Justin Moore they have all their guys I think they’re pretty damn good um I just don’t think their National Championship good or they’re whatever they spent if they spent three because the the the rule

That I’ve been told I don’t know I you talk to more people than I do is the feeling is 2 million gets it that gets the NCA tournament 4 million you should be challenging to go to a final four and if there’s somewhere between two and four

And they’re at Villanova and they have all this recent history they should be better than they’ve been injuries are definitely part of part of the equation hey while we’re on Villanova I spoke to Jay Wright the other day and he told me he does not miss coaching one

Bit and he is not coming back remember he retired at 60 years old basically on the top of his game right I mean they they won titles in 16 18 went to the final four and then he decided weeks later he was going to step

Away it surprised me a little bit D when he said I’m definitely done because I figured you know some of these guys I get it when you’re 70 plus you’re done Nick sa all right he he’s done enjoy you know the the rest of your life without

Having to wake up every day and worry about all this and you know I understand the times have changed right like you said at the beginning Villanova culture now you’re talking about the portal J wri rarely went into the portal um are you shocked that Jay Wright at 61 years

Old right now is happy doing TV and he’s not coming back at all no no I mean you know I I had a I’ve had several deep conversations look as you know I was up for a uh a coaching job last year there was a couple other

Ones that I I I talk to people about and people in the industry is like what are you doing you know what what what are you doing dude is we’re in such a bad place and then you factor in look Bill raftery though we want him to can’t do

It forever he’s already doing all of the best CBS games and eventually Raph will retire um and at that point in time he’ll be the guy he does he actually told me last year I tried to get him my buddy has this big kind of CEO it’s called The Sandbox and I I

Tried to get Jay to do it Jay’s like I I did what everybody told me not to do I said yes to too many things I just want to play golf want to be at the shore want to cover basketball want to go see friends so like hell if you can do it

And you got that kind of balance and you have just enough basketball to fulfill that need and desire I mean what like do you really think he wants to be in the gym right now and then in the film room it’s a real job Mike real job and then

In addition to all the other things you normally have to do in college basketball academics off the court managing the travel everything recruiting now you got to constantly recruit the players on your roster and then when you’re in handshake lines if you like a guy you got like coaches

Don’t like that will they do it sure they’ll do it to survive but they don’t want to recruit in they don’t like in League transfers that’s gross we don’t like doing that no dude I I want my guys my guys grow dou there’s also a little bit of a

Difference with Jay and some other coaches because there is some coaches and you know this like that will go to a spot and they don’t have to speak they don’t do any of the other things with you know with with with the boosters Jay was like he would say s to everything

Right like he would do everything and again with nil he told me like listen like I think I could have been fine in this nil world and I think he could have too but but it’s a grind because again he never says no to anything so it’s

Constant and now you add in that the portal doesn’t stop right like you can’t get time down the shore we we we have we have to do this we got to do this thing okay let’s do this thing we this show is like the most honest basketball show

There is we gotta stop using nil we gotta stop saying nil like some of the San Diego State guys they they’re making nil because they nearly won a national championship okay but it’s not we’re they’re buying you have to buy a player you have to pay him a salary okay and

The only reason you got all these you got all these lawyers out there that are trying to make it where they’re actually salaried employee they don’t realize all the tax implications all the other things that that come in once you get to a collective bargaining which feels like

That’s what everybody’s that courts are pushing us towards right but I mean the lack of I’m just look Jay’s system and I know you’ve been to practices his practices his last eight nine years at Villanova were a work of art but those guys were programmed out of their loyalty and culture or loyalty

To the culture and you I mean it’s a really amazing watch where they there’s no excess chatter there’s no they just hey when somebody slipt out of line just attitude attitude and they’re back after it right staying very few words and he didn’t have to be like a drill sergeant

It was a work of art all bounce passes and practice you you can’t do that when you have a new team every year you can’t come into the Huddle and go hey man remember we used to r one down like two years ago like let let’s put that in

Like coach I was two schools away one one year ago like it do it’s it’s the complete opposite of what he we were all brought up on what made this sport special which is man I love those guys I live with those guys for three four five years okay I transferred

I’m not saying transferring is the devil okay but what I’m saying is the idea that you can transfer play right away that you can multiple transfer that you don’t have to sit out that you can transfer in league is ridiculous and then you got to pay kids and again the

Difference is if you go back before this pay forplay thing started it’s not that the best players weren’t being compensated a lot most of them were it’s now you’re paying guys can’t play right and so now you’re sitting there and you have a booster who gave some of his hard-earned money to your

Program to your Collective right to pay a kid sometimes six figures and then you’re sitting there like he can’t help us but if I don’t play him I may lose not just a kid I lose the booster like this is not this is not how it’s supposed to be it’s comically poorly

Designed handled managed and you have so many of these leeches that are out there going like yeah More Money More M like that’s not there actually is a limit to the money and we’re destroying the fabric of it so I I can believe he can say could he survive like yeah J right

Can coach like he can do whatever okay but it’s not like pro basketball in the NBA you sign a contract you’re there for multiple years like nothing no contract matters National letter of intent doesn’t matter you know none of it matters none of it nope nope all right
