Rory McIlroy hopes any deal between Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour could lead to a new format moving forward. A Framework Agreement was announced in June of last year with an initial deadline of December 31 for a pact to be reached but that has now been surprisingly extended to spring 2024, and we don’t know for sure that this will be met.

And players I think that’s a tough ask I really really do and one thing that I think players will strugle with here is playing more remember the top players want to play around 26 events a year now if there’s more events coming into the schedule how is that going to work
There’s going to be one tour that doesn’t get the top players enough so therefore we’ll attract the bigger sponsors so how’s that going to work MoneyWise are they going to be levied by the PF and bumped up to sort of counteract that these are the issues

Sounds exciting! LIV needs to go away or needs to be changed to bring that tour in line with the rest. Too bad those responsible for pushing LIV made it adversarial toward the other tours.

Well the PGA should first accept that they are not the only tour out there. I mean we already had something like what Rory is talking about: the WGC. We had 4 tournaments made up of the top players of each Tour playing 4 (was 5 at a stage) high profile events with OWGR points only second to majors, and a big prize fund too. It was heavily skewed towards PGA tour in terms of the field as it was mostly by OWGR points that you got in with a hand full of spots for merit leaders of other smaller tours. A 70 man field with no cut. All sounds great! Guess what the PGA scrapped that too.
They should just bring back the WGC and expand it to a few more events. Tweak the entry criteria to be a bit more inclusive to other tours (ie have a minimum nr of spots for DPWT, increase the Sunshine and Asian and Aussie tours to have a minimum except only the top ranked player. Make it a league so that the events are played with the same group of players and have an overall ranking system for all events.
There is no point in creating a league of only the top ranked players. Because those players are mostly already qualified to play anywhere in the world. You need to keep the lesser tours (aka everyone other than the PGA) interested to keep playing there if playing well on those tours can get you into this global league.
Rory hasn't won a major since 2014. I think he has damaged PGA golf in the past couple years. It amazes me that some people still put him on such a pedestal.
PGA still wants to be in control of the top tour and they still want all other tours to be feeder tours (including LIV). It's never gonna happen, but PGA won't accept anything else.
I don't understand why there's a deal at all. All I can see is that PIF thinks PGA is going bankrupt and they think they can a deal for cheap. But PGA continues to think they have leverage. I think PIF should just wait a couple years. This deal makes zero sense right now and the ones would benefit the most is the PGA and they're the ones stalling.

My thoughts are, that if you introduce super leagues then the crowds at the lower levels may decrease s a result and therefore, the needed revenue for the events with it!

Isn't Rory just echoing Normans thoughts from the mid 90s ? Norman ultimately created WGC events that were meant to be played in Australia, China, South Africa, Brazil, Japan, etc. Sadly the PGA Tour hijacked them – surprise, surprise. Norman was furious and with the $ backing of PIF was able to create it albeit on a smaller scale. Rory came out and demanded Norman be sacked before the PGA Tour and LIV meet about it. Now he is starting to see exactly what Norman was talking about. Eff Rory and his hypocrisy.

I think Rory is missing the point its not just about what he or the players want its also about the fans. If golf is to reach out to more people and places its also needs to become more appealing you have used the comparisons to cricket which has 3 successful formats T20, 50 over and 5 day Test Match. There is a desire for a faster format of golf and the answers is very simple co-ordinate the different tours so events don’t clash and let the players move freely between tours. Get rid of Mr Ego Mananhan the PGA is no longer top dog

I think we’ve herd enough from Rory. He’s been a disruptive force on many fronts and I’d rather hear from Norman and Phil. The PGA took a beautiful product but unfortunately had no vision for the future of golf. Looks like LIV will help the sport of golf move into the modern era.
