Mizuno Pro 241 Iron review with Andrew Ainsworth

Take a look a the stunning Mizuno Pro 241 Iron.

Hey everybody welcome it’s Andre with Golf Academy welcome to the video good to have you along I’ve got a brand new mauno IR for you to have a look at today and it’s an absolute Beauty stay tuned so everybody it’s exciting one this one mauno pro

241 iron has just come out very recently there’s two of the models we’ll talk about those another day we’ll focus on this one today the 241 is a muscle back blade it’s the smallest blade apparently that mauno ever produced which is beautiful but quite scary when you look

At it from above so we’re going to have a little trat chat about it as always first discuss it tell you the sort of the pros and the cons and then we’ll hit a few balls a little bit later on if you’re not interested in the tech or

Anything like that just Advance the video on sort of four five minutes you could probably say save yourself from all my my Babble and then you can just watch the uh the juicy bits of hitting it so 241 replaces the 221 and for all intents and purposes

This is a blade stroke muscle back let’s talk about the uh the debate that we always have with a club like this should we say what sort of golfer would benefit from using this club well I think it’s fair to say and I know there are people

Who watch this video will disagree with me but that’s fine it’s all right to disagree isn’t it this club definitely will suit good ball Strikers you’re going to see a lot of people on tour using this iron aite golfers very low handicap players and why would they use

A club like this what’s the advantage of a a grain flow Forge blade stroke muscle back well workability is one thing with the modern heel and toe cavity backed irons they’re absolutely great at getting the ball launched and trying to keep the ball straight but they can be

Quite difficult to move around round so the elite golfer wants to manufacture shots they want to hit the ball high and low they want to fade it draw it move the ball around work it and some of these top players love the feel of this club so the grain flow forging as

Opposed to a cast Club will generally give you a softer feel off the club face they’ve got copper underlays under here and all sorts going on now people feel um the difference in the softness of a club everyone’s a little bit different it’s quite subjective some people are

Very very receptive to the feel of the club other people couldn’t care less what it feels like you if it feels hard or soft they’re just worried where the ball’s going so in my humble opinion I think the golfer who would benefit from a club like this or use a club like this

Is a very good ball Striker now that doesn’t always need to mean a low handicap I’ve taught people who play off 10 12 14 handicap who are great ball Strikers they just don’t manage the game particularly well and they handicaps don’t come down but I think generalizing

A little bit if you’re looking for a club which is going to be forgiving on your off-center hits then this ain’t the baby for you um you’ve got to hit this out the middle to get much out of it let’s just do a little bit of run

Through not much of what mauno is saying they’re calling this A Center Muscle which I’ve never heard described before 241 is a pure shot makers muscle back with mass accumulated centrally behind impact so compared to the 221 clubit placing they’re saying there’s a little bit more mass in the center of the club

Guess giving you a smidge more forgiveness not much uh Fine Design details made possible through a long-term relationship R&D this is their grain flow forging plant in hoshima in Japan a quick story for you I remember a rep of mine who worked with Mauna said

He’d been to Japan you to fly him out every now and again to look at the factory and he was on the production line and there was a whole bunch of people on the production line with these magnifying glasses massive magnifying glasses and every head just before it

Was going into its final production stage had to be examined on these magnifying glasses like really really powerful and there was a bin where every now and then a head would be thrown into this bin because it failed the inspection checks and he said can I have

A look at that club that it’s just gone thrown in the bin and he had a look at it under the magnifying glass and he said he looked at it for ages couldn’t see a single defect on it apparently it was pointed out that somewhere on the club was the tiniest

Little bit of imperfection that the untrained eye wouldn’t pick up that wasn’t good enough for mauno it went in the bin and it was melted down and go again sort of thing so incredible attention to detail I’ll talk about price later that’s probably why we paying premium for for these sorts of

Clubs uh what else can I bore you with yeah yeah we talked about that let’s just nip down and have a little look at the specs this is quite interesting more compact short isons distinct shortening of the blade length in the Shor RS was direct request from the majority of

Mauno tour players full satin brush finish which we’ve seen for a little while on lots of clubs and as we drop down into the specs this is where things change when you get into the muscle back bladed irons The Lofts bear in mind it’s

Not unusual for a loft of a s iron these days on a cavity back ion to be somewhere around 27° 28 29’s almost become the norm 7 iron loft 34 de so true honest players loss we’ll call these giving a pitching wedge 46 degrees which makes

Gapping clubs a lot easier um these days we’re getting pitching wedge is coming in at 41 degrees which means you need which is basically a n99 isn’t it that’s let’s not be fooled here uh means you need to have two Gap wedges like a 45

And a 50 to bridge that Gap stupid crazy don’t know why the manufacturers are pursuing this continual quest for stronger and stronger losss it’s it’s nonsense don’t get me going on that three iron available now that would be scary the three iron I’d imagine would look like something you’re going to

Butter your toast with in the morning that thin I don’t think I could get a three iron airb I’m struggling to get the seven iron air bom to be honest loads of different shafts as you’d expect from how many shafts have we got on offer this year uh just a

23 have a click run through uh aerot Tech Steel fiber loads of kbs’s in there all the flexes just mindblowing nipon in here NS Pros NS Pro modus I guess we got some loads of those it’s good old Dynamic gold never goes away does it 120 steals

O that’s a new one the dynamic gold mid haven’t seen that one before uh and a dynamic gold mid 115 okay that’s all new good old Dynamic gold been around old as the hills how many grip options have we got this year 26 grip options and the

Lovely thing about mauno custom fit over here in the UK vast majority of those shafts are one price there is a couple of upch chargeable shafts like that steel fiber I think and maybe the gold Dynamic Gold Tour issues I think are upch chargeable but all the RPS are the same price

Regardless so you can really customize the set and you can have stamping done on your wedges and all sorts of funky things price we’ll just tell you about the price before we hit it for a 79 set over here in the UK I’ve just had a

Quick look online at some of the big boy retailers um around about 1,300 Great British pounds for a s iron set so let’s say four to pitching wedge and people go it’s a lot of money but you’re paying for something here that’s you know beautifully made you know state-ofthe-art blade custom fits 1,300

Yes it is a lot of money but um compared to the rest of the irons on the market you know you think you’re paying £900 for a set of ping g430s which a cast process is nowhere near as expensive to make as these that’s enough talking

Andrew shut up let’s go and hit some balls stay with me okay time to hit this mauno Pro 241 iron what have we got in here I’ve got NS Pro modus 105 in stiff standard length Standard Life seven iron 34° and where are we today we’re at Teton Pines

Anybody played Teton Pines no idea where it is somewhere in America let me know if you know uh I’ve got 157 yards to the flag nice bit of water there to get my attention excuse the Hat people are asking me in comments say why you wear a

Hat indoors I need somewhere to clip this mic this road Wireless might and if I put it on here as I make the golf swing it all rustles and creates horrible sound so I don’t really like wearing the hat but uh it’s somewhere to

Clip this mic so it’s out of the way so and it’s also a bit of Shameless advertising for my Golf Academy there you go there’s another reason to wear it okay so what are we hitting today I’ve got mauno Pro R B5 something or other golf balls which I

Can’t read CU I should have my glasses on but they’re basically a mid-range ball 566 I think they’re called they’re not super high spinning like provie ones they’re sort of somewhere in the middle um cuz my son went to play golf the other day and said dad have you got any golf

Balls um I said yeah there you go said can I have some of those Pro v1s I said yeah there you go gave him half a dozen Pro ons or maybe eight Pro ons and he lost them all so that was the end of that he’s getting late Balls next time

Right let’s hit a few shots here looks from above before we hit it have an overhead shot of this absolutely classical mauno shape thin top Edge beautifully sculpted not a lot of it as you can see when it’s behind the ball you know when the club’s frame behind

The ball this uh certainly gets your attention minimal offset on it so uh just classic let’s hit some could go left that one yep little bit of a pull to start with the feel of this club and over the years sometimes I’ve said I can’t feel that much of a difference between a

Forge and a cath Club this one is is soft and I’m not going to say the word buttery well I just did say it but I’m not saying it again CU people will start doing the drinking game if I keep saying the the b word okay let’s see if we can

Find the green this time yeah little bit of a push out to the right decent strike now these being 34 degrees of Loft I am not expecting a great deal of distance out of these let’s have a look at the numbers 82 milph Club speed we’ll

Push that a little bit higher in a minute giving us a 105 ball speed launching at 22 de it’s quite high for me being a low ball hitter spinning at 55 that’s spin will go up a little bit as I start to strike it a little bit

Better carry distance of 146 yds carry let’s push the club speed a little bit see if we can push it into sort of mid 80s yeah another little push might get a little kick off that bank or it might go in the bunker okay ignoring the fact that again

I push that we’ll go again we’ll leave these in for your amusement okay slightly better strike on that one getting a little bit pulley haven’t quite managed to knock the flag out yet but we’ll take that one 85 milph Club speed a 108 ball speed just spinning at 6,000 just under and again

Carry distance of 149 what you get with clubs like these is real consistency of yardages you don’t get that sort of little flyer shot that you sometimes get off cast clubs and I guess this is why good players want to use the the forge clubs that was a little bit better for

The flag get the height on that that’s really high for me come on oh well that would have got a kick back off the bank they do feel fantastic they really do there’s such a soft beautiful feel off it that’s good it’s about the best shot I’ve hit so

Far I could stand here all day hitting these would I personally put these in the bag no I’m I’m not a good enough ball Striker to really use this club I don’t think I mean I I can find the middle of the club but you’ve really I feel under pressure

Just got slight PS today just closing that club face I really feel under pressure when I’m using a club like this to to strike it and um I guess you know if I played a lot more and practiced a lot more which I don’t then maybe a club

Like this might be something for me but personally I want something with a little bit more help but I understand why some people love this style of Club it’s very very Niche I had a guy in not long ago who played off a high handicap

And he he was 24 25 handicap lovely fell struggled a bit with his golf you know few swing issues like we all have and he was convinced he wanted a set of blades and he I said why do you want blades he said well I think they’re going to make

Me a better ball Striker and we had this discussion I’d be interested to get your comments down below you know I I said to him I said well you know in the long run you know they may make you a better ball Striker that wasn’t

Bad but you may go through a lot of pain trying to get to that point and it may actually make your golf get worse before you get to that point so you know it’s a very interesting debate isn’t it what type of golfer should be using a bladed

Iron and you know are you wasting your time or would it make you a better ball Striker I don’t know I I think I know I mean my honest opinion is I think you know again go Jim there would probably you know just really struggle and make

What is already a difficult game even more difficult than it should be oh that was good I think we’ll finish on that one I think I’ll put the kettle on and have a coffee after that that was good strip that was right out the middle of the

Club um not huge Club speed 81 mil hour 110 ball speed 155 carry spinning at 52 which is plenty in summary mauno you never disappoint with this sort of Club the mauno pro 241 iron it’s a thing of beauty if you want to go and hit a really really nice Forge club and

Experience what it’s like look no further thanks for watching the video today as always I’ve babbled on longer than I should but it’s always a pleasure and I hope you enjoy the videos post your comments down below if you’ve had experience of using a a mauno muscle

  1. Played MP33 for 10 years as a 12 handicap. There's a lot of joy to be had, but I had to practice every day. Be warned. They are beautiful though.

  2. Hi Andrew, thanks for the review. I'm currently playing a combo mizuno set MP15, j5-7 (have a j4 but not on the course)/MP4, j8-pw. Still in good shape… How would you compare these vs Pro 241? Thinking about to upgrade one day…Regards Bo

  3. I agree with you completely Andrew! What golf club manufacturers are doing with lofts is nearly malfeasance. Seven iron lofts of 27° robs the consumer of a balanced and well gapped set of clubs.

  4. I hit the 241 and 243. Both felt awesome but the 243 was just a little easier to deal with. Why make the game harder?

  5. I grew up as a junior golfer playing bladed irons. I was 7 yrs old when i started playing and even had a 1 iron in the bag ive had multiple lay offs from the game over the yrs but the one thing ive always excelled at is ball striking and i put this all down to learning to play golf with the old balata balls and bladed irons. Im now 44 yrs old and still game an old set of mp68 mizuno blades and have an old hogan apex bladed 2 iron in the bag!!! The day i cant get hold of a set of bladed irons is the day i will quit. Im currently playing off 3 handicap and in my opinion blades are the best game improvement irons on the market the feedback and punishment when not struck out the middle is everything you need to improve your ball striking.
