Welcome aboard the part train I am Evan and we help frustrated golfers enjoy the ride again and this video is going to do just that okay in this video we’re going to learn how to finally hold the golf club in the right way I’ve been playing

This game for 18 years and my mind was literally blown that I’ve had the grip wrong this entire time so whether you’re a new golfer or you’ve been playing for 18 years like me this video this lesson this is my first lesson of 2024 was the greatest description of how to hold the

Golf club the right way that I’ve ever heard you guys are in for an absolute treat so hop aboard the channel Now And subscribe and let’s get you enjoying the ride in 2024 go now when I feel like my body isn’t there and my arms are taking over

Everything I’m having this big left Y and a big right yep and it’s making me confused of like wait did I even have the right grip yeah you know so let’s go so let’s spine in again Stand Tall let your your arms hang at your sides and

Totally relax your arms as they would naturally hang do you feel that your thumb hangs fractionally closer to your body than your pinky does at hang yeah you wouldn’t take a breath and relax and feel like your arm is here right if you totally relax your arm

Hangs there that is natural arm hanging yeah so if that’s where you naturally are and I just held your arm right out in front of you and you opened your hand up in the air your arm is natur Al not at a straight vertical thumb your forearm and your whole relationship with

Your arm is fractionally this way yeah this is human anatomy design not you doing anything crazy so let’s figure out where natural arm hang is this little doohickey hinge guy is pretty much at 12:00 your thumb technically is at 1:00 is that you follow me and all I want you

To do to start with is just close your last three fingers and notice where I’m putting this so that’s one two give me a third and then squeeze the backpad as you squeeze give me a good squeeze there you go now what is doing the controlling

Get the third finger in there I feel the third there you go nothing nothing nothing back pad squeeze go ahead and give it a little squeeze like like you’re like you got some okay you feel that keep that squeeze don’t don’t let go loosen up your arm a little bit

Keep the squeeze here loosen your arm relax your arm squeeze so you’ve got control of my hand in the back pad in the last three aose arm like if I was going to pound a door with the back of my if I was going to smack with this

Yeah I Want You Secure here secure yeah and free free yeah and what you probably saw is totally locked out everywhere yes I could I couldn’t move your arm this is back to in in this is in the for the Evan specific which I thought at first was good because I’m connected

No you’re you’re not I’m going to make myself not crooked yeah walking it’s right so we’ve got again if you feel like oh my God I got some more freedom here and that freedom is a little scary yeah like out of control the absence of being controlling not not out of control

The bike that wrecks or some skier who’s going a million miles an hour but out of control meaning not controlling you’ve got we’ve got to free you up right you’re you’re way and is this technically in the Palm no that where part yes that’s more up in the Palm okay this is

Old gloves this was my old grip so I want you to go there close the three there you go you feel that so just to show the camera this is where my wear pattern was before I change my grip and I just wanted to confirm cuz I don’t

Even know I assume that’s the Palm but I want something more here so so we if we do this and again so relax just a little bit don’t close don’t close don’t close don’t close just close the backpad the last three Fe so no thumb no trigger

Finger no thumb relax that yeah you feel like you got it back to there yeah okay now just let it just let the the weight of the club hang for a second so I’m going to let go but if you relax a little bit you’ll feel the the club

Pressuring up into the butt pad and down on the third finger like a counterbalance and by virtue of getting you into this natural arm hanging position if I ask you to just stay there and you just felt the weight of the counterbalance this should be infinitely

Easy and natural for you to feel yeah okay if I got you stronger quote unquote this is this is slightly strong but let’s call it NE let’s call it zeroed if slightly over natural arm we are zeroing you out okay if I took and got you

Stronger you would be more over here and now let the club just balance and hang on your fingers from there and tell me does it do the same thing or do you feel I if I got you back to zero to where it felt pretty balanced and I weakened the

Whole thing and now asked you to balance it what happens to the whole natural weight of the club there you feel how it’s it torqus out differently but if I can start at a place where you’re here natural arm hanging and I can go back pad last three fingers without this and

Without this and you can feel that sucker just hanging there with security here mhm fre it up yeah don’t let go don’t let go yeah so I’ve got free we’ve got we’ve got we got athlete we’ve got second basem turning the ball we’ve got some flow but I can’t take that away from

You you can now swing this club remember the walking analogy I did let’s let’s go linear here yeah the natural momentum of the club can swing into a hinge because you have because you’re holding it here and you’re not using this as much this all becomes softer got it if you squeeze

The crap out of it here you’ll feel a little bit more of the squeeze here so you’re a little bit more in control with the back three but by virtue of that Evan you’ve now freed this up to hinge I’ve always struggled with hinge i’ I

Basically have no hinge and I don’t know how to Hing do you feel what that is doing there yeah so here would be my multiple choice question for you unless it’s still multiple yeah I’m not sure okay are you making it hinge or are you swinging

And allowing the weight at the end of the stick to hinge is it hinging or are you hinging it it’s hinging okay when I walk am I bending my knees and my ankles when I walk or are my knees bending when I walk your knees are bending when you

Walk it’s happening it’s allowed to happen you’re not doing it it’s it’s doing it it’s doing but it’s not doing it’s allowing yeah I’m asking you to feel a squeeze without tension a security a ability to feel a hanging y a therefore because we’ve now I didn’t get

You here and I didn’t get you here the ability to feel that the natural motion of the cloak can swing freely into a hinge and now all we would do from this position is stick your butt backward unlock your knees to comfort use your chest as is your initial engine so what

I want you to do is just just relax just just just rock your chest back and forth and you feel how the arms is Swinging with the chest yeah as you turn your chest I’m asking you to allow this to be something that happens at the end of the

Swing okay right yeah and if you Unwound and we unsung or reung or reverse swung or whatever you want to call it and you allowed it to recycle back over to here this would just softly fold over here you would turn and finish y your weight

Would feel like it’s on the outside of your ankle y you would feel as you finish like you pivoted up onto your back toe but you you aren’t there because you got there you’re there because the momentum of you swinging the club freely was allowed to fold up here

Think of a roller coaster or a kid on a swing set you know how it has that moment of pause and then the rewing reverse swing swings itself over to there yeah I’ve heard Justin rting a motion I’ve heard J describe the back swing like a going up the roller roller

Coaster and then drop so do you feel where that is in your hand now yeah and if you held it at your side stand face forward for a second and just go to there with no thumb and no trigger finger but squeeze the back pad yeah do

You feel how your arm is kind of in a natural arm hanging position yeah if I put you here that’s a weaker grip you feel what happens to your arm yeah if I put you here that’s a stronger position yeah I get a lot more tens

A l more but if you are letting your arm hang as naturally as it possi can and with of somebody else I put it in the back in the last three fingers you should be able to feel like oh my God it hangs there naturally and if you kind of

Swung it straight up in the air vertically from there do you feel how the hinge would happen yeah you didn’t do it but it occurred yeah well you know what’s funny is for someone that’s this all different yeah okay so here but let me just call a quick time out in in in

Just in this little thing we’ve done with your left hand yeah when you’re able to do this by yourself can Evan can Evan yeah on his own find natural arm hang grab the club with the back pad and the last three fingers hold the club this is you by yourself there’s no one

Else by you if you can re aieve this exact set of positions every single time without me or Brett or doctor this or whatever if you can do that yourself then you have earned the right to have access to a free swinging natural hinge

If I am walking on a hike and I can get my knees and toes pointing forward and my elbows back and my hands forward and I can relax enough and remember how they swing I could walk well right but if tomorrow I did this and then this and

Then this and then this all bets are off right your job is just to Simply do that every single time well I will say for someone that had because you have to yeah if you want to walk right okay does that make does that it does I think the

The big takeaway so far yeah Foundation One the thing that’s kind of an aha moment is for someone that had no guidance so probably the person watching right assuming they’re trying to fix things themselves for someone that had a weaker or a weak left hand grip meaning

You have you have a wear pattern in the palm of your glove that’s a good sign of it right for someone that’s trying to feel it in your fingers that was a very foreign thing to me and I’m like I don’t even know how to do that but to feel

That it’s my three fingers yes and not my index and myb it kind of that on its own so that’s the first time I’ve actually learned Scott in and you can pour you’ll pour these through them noting the Adam Scott I told this to my co-host Adam Scott in the history of he

Says I’m like trying to be like Adam Scott now he does no trigger finger he’s got you can see you can see him finding and feeling backpad last three fingers got it you can watch it as a fundamental of where he’s at I’m guessing he’s

Trying to create a I want to feel that and you don’t need the thumb and the trigger finger to find it with your left hand yeah you don’t need them in fact in fact they’re not there because they’re not they’re not a part of the initial feel of what goes on their their

Ancillary yeah they they’ll be there you’ll put them on but they’re not that’s not what’s gripping the club what’s gripping the club is got it last three okay that’s interesting okay Foundation One Foundation one okay so stay there Foundation number two and we can negotiate a few of these things as

We go but you’ve got that feel drop the thumb curl it up do you notice now with your Golf Pride logo that your thumb is a little bit more at 12:30 or 1:00 your thumb is not vertical on the club it is a little bit over that’s zeroed okay if

I’m calling instead of strong and weak okay okay your right hand like a puzzle piece if I if I kind of crimp that and you’ve got your Lifeline right in the middle of your thumb so this pad you see those big pads I get that from my mom

Did you yeah we make we make fun of how big my pads are they’re like humongous pads but keep going wonderful pad thank you okay well let’s just start hands straight like a handshake so when I’ve got the little kids this is the junior Camp thing and we’re like in summer

Campville your options are and I will give you the options you want to come up with a third I will use it as summer respecting the Evan singer version yeah you can either go with handshake handshake versus high five low five handshake or hot dog bun

Hot dog yeah and the hot dog fits right inside the bun and you just go right to there wow you see that I used to put it here and I’m like I don’t know how to hold with the thumb there okay this is so crazy handshake hand never even knew

The grip right or hot dog left thumb hot dog bun put it right to the side now when you do this don’t let the pinky do anything I want you to focus more on these two fingers okay here so if I just get you to the hand Chi and these guys

Curl under and your thumb Falls over the right hand sensation is more these everything but the pinky feels dextrous imagine if you were holding a rope or or if we were going to duel what’s whatever it’s called the sword fighting sword fighting but if you were going to duel I

Want you to feel dextrous on the club with these two fingers and these oops let’s stay right to the side hold on yep okay yep just right to the side and then just curl them under yeah there you go so you will feel now like this

Part part of your hand is holding a rope or a or a dueling thing this isn’t doing a whole lot it’s just looping okay this guy remember shouldn’t be doing a whole lot because you had more of the core back here yeah so this guy’s kind of

Chill this guy’s kind of chill they just kind of hang out together this right hand now feels much more like it’s the upper four fingers okay so my ring finger middle finger index thumb everything but the pink everything but the Pinky Okay top four now feel dextrous like you are holding the the

Stick with the upper four you don’t feel much more dextrous here yeah you feel that it’s to the side of the club this chills out this chills out basketball do you use some basketball not as much not as much obviously I’ve played pick up ready to

Shoot a basketball and I’m and I’m at this point right here soft right shoulder soft right elbow so I’m not in geek out build right if you were you baseball if I’m getting ready to throw a pitch and I’m right to here soft relaxed it’s not tense locked right so I would

Love for you here by virtue of now having this and being a little over you might feel a little bit like o I’ve got some I’ve got some up in my left shoulder I’ve got some straight in my left arm and by virtue of this going to

The side you might have some o some soft and some soft comparatively setup you might feel a little bit more like you got more air in the left tire and a little bit less air in the right tire yeah you feel that yeah yeah I’ve never felt so much

Control of the club with both hands okay good I think yeah I hope we’ll find out and also just to see since you couldn’t see Josh was showing me basically the the hot dog to show them this angle is between my large pad is this guy right

There that space up against my thumb right basically if you face the camera even in that way you would see that before you take that hand off for a second yeah if we just went to there the left is slightly over the top of the

Club so the Golf Pride kind of goes into the angle there more and if I went rightand that exact thing the right thumb will naturally fall on the other side of the golf PR oh interesting okay so you’re kind of never on 12:00 12 kind of sits in between got it Okay

  1. What I'm gathering from this is that the controlling fingers , 5 of them to be exact, for a right hander, are the middle/ring/pinky of the left hand, and the middle/ring fingers of the right hand. The index fingers on both hands just kind of curl around the shaft on either side, but not with any real grip pressure and the pinky on the right hand just lays on top of the index finger of the left or between the index and middle finger if you're doing the overlap style. Both thumbs lay down the sides of the shaft so that you can achieve maximum wrist hinge down and back, and side to side. Thumbs straight down the shaft severely limit this hinge. It looks like you can grip it with enough strength to swing back, make contact, and through without it feeling loose, but that if you were holding the club straight out in front of you someone could pull on it and, unless you increased your grip strength, it would slide out of your hands fairly easily.
