[Applause] welcome to qualum four and the first event of the HSBC bwf World Tour season for 2024 it is the 67th Malaysia open here at the axat arena and the fans have been flocking in all week and watching the opening rounds and of course quarterfinal Friday but
Today it’s the very special day it’s the beginning of the weekend which means semi-final Saturday here and this ultimately is what it’s all about the gorgeous HSBC bwf wour finals trophy today brought out by another National Junior shutler doubles player Aaron Tai who’s actually partnered up with K Kai Zin currently
Ranked about 250th in the world but also picked up a third place finish at the bwf world junior Championship last Year we’re going to be expecting to see a lot more results from him and his partner over over the coming years of course and maybe they will even perform at this wonderful Arena here looking at the order of play for court one on semi-final Saturday kicking off the uh
First session and it is Terry he and Jessica tan against Kim wanho and J N both of them responsible for great results in the quarterfinals who will win on the day today after that it’s an absolute epic the classic Tai suing taking on chenu in the first of the women’s single
Semi-finals mix doubles after that Jang and we have had a great run this week they’re up against UT wanabi and Arisa higashino the number two seeds beana leis SOI in the women’s doubles after that they were very solid and very competent yesterday will they be able to do the same against Jang and
Xen from China then it’s the other women’s single semi-final and it’s another epic encounter an young will number one against jangan who of course alsted akan amaguchi the defending Champion uh yesterday women’s doubles after that was another giant killing outing by Luen Shu and taning Chen andja their victims they’re taking on iwanaga
And nakanishi in the women’s doubles Lyn chin he also had a great quarterfinal he’s up against Anders antonson who’s in very very good form right now srick and chirag the uh Indian number two pair have set up their year Well by starting this first uh super 1000 event by
Getting to the semis there up against the world champions Kang minuk and siung J and then Victor axon the last remaining defending Champion here in Malaysia this week up against shiu Chi will number seven in the men’s singles and the men’s doubles to round it off lang and Wang from China the number
One’s taking on hoki and kobashi the number sevens so plenty of great action coming your way and looking at the mixed doubles STW there’s confirmation of those big big matches from Kim Juan Ho and Jong Na and Terry he and Jessica Tan in the quarterfinals taking out Jen and
Wang and sub and of course victims on the other side of the draw so here they come into the arena it’s my great pleasure of course to have our resident Bonton expert Ste pedon here with me for the semi-final Ste what do you think about the semi-final matchups uh fantastic uh lineups we’ve
Got waiting for us today and um also some um new kits on the Block so to speak in terms of um semi-finals at the super th000 level so it’s going to be really um interesting I think and um full speed forward here in the AR Arena that’s right Landmark uh historical
Events happening in this today because of course four uh defending Champions oued uh at the quarterfinal n AK yaguchi alfin Nardo men’s doubles chennin Johan women’s doubles and Jen and hang which we watched of course yesterday in mixed doubles looking at the head-to-head here it’s a one- nothing lead for Kim and
Jong that was at the career open back in 2022 didn’t play each other last year and that Al as you can see went to three games Red is the call you on the toss what do you choose this receive who will receive who will s Jessica to end chaturanga fish our umpire getting
Things set up in terms of the protocol of binton but uh for Terry and Je Jessica uh we were talking about these landmark things that have um Landmark well events I said they were the first Singaporean mix doubles team to pick up gold at the Commonwealth Games they are
Now as you pointed out yesterday the first Singaporean mix doubles team to make a super 1000 semi-final and they’ve also got their eyes on being the first Singapore and mixed doubles uh Team to hopefully try and fight for a medal at the Olympics this year played amazing this tournament
Right now they’re just in sight olypic qualification this result here will definitely help yeah it’s a good way to start the year that’s for sure we’ve been getting consistently better and here’s J Nan of course we saw them putting in a very solid performance and I think really with both of these
Pairs I said they both had great quarterfinal matches for Jong and Kim as we look at their results tan and Li in 38 minutes yamashi and Sho in 60 minutes that was the big one Jen and hang in 58 minutes they set out their store yesterday they had a plan and they stuck
To it and it worked for them yeah definitely I’ve said it before that when uh when they’re healthy the two Koreans they’re tough cookie for jungu way andang Chong they’ve got the game to rattled them so Terry he here 28 years old born in panang another Singapore in sh has started very early
On from Malaysia and another couple on court marry Jessica Tan in 2021 if I believe in fact in 2023 one of their big um highlights was the Irish open and there of course they faced another couple who also happened to be in the commentary box this week Greg and
Jenny Mays and that’s their Tournament results uh leading up to to this one it was G Le from Chinese Ty in 51 minutes J and pora 41 and another Tai de subi of course the number succeeds in 48 minutes so consistent performance from them but they have already said um in the Press
Yesterday that this super 1000 semi-final appearance for them is their best achievement that includes winning uh a title of course in 2022 can see from from the the pairs that they defeated it’s all very very capable uh players the former W champions from Thailand um had a magnificent tournament here in
T looking at our umpire and service chge for this one as said chaturanga vishan umpire Muhammad Eid Salman in the service judge chair a lot of fans already here for this first match probably not as much as would have been of course if uh there had still been some Malaysian interest
But AR Chan so and onu CH E with the last two Malaysian Pairs and they bowed out yesterday also at quarterfinals it was a pretty crunching quarterfinal Friday actually for one of the big names so about ready to get underway here ladies and gentlemen on my un Kim [Applause] Korea and K
And Jessica [Applause] Singapore and this is one play great rousing response from the fans here for the Singapore pair Who start us [Applause] off last year it was quarterfinal appearance for Kim and Jong so they’ve upped from 2023 and for Terry and Jessica it was second round [Applause] exit
Low that’s a beautiful M Terry heat first the flat push pinning J to the back cord and then very very nice guided shot course the net well they’re pulling out all the stops right from the start solid three lead over 1 three one of those points winner one of
Those points some good hustling and of course one of those points uh lost to the back court drift yeah that’s that’s definitely a factor it has been all week um drift coming from the Koreans TOS the Singapore parir and that means that um the Koreans have be careful pushing
Flat lifting towards the backline of of the Singapore pair here in the first game and that makes it um a bit easier uh for singaporeans the singaporeans as long as they are in the um control of the rallies obviously if the Koreans are attacking they get a little bit more
Bite in their attack yeah nice angle from kimon Hope to finish that point just stepped up a little hle half jump just enough to get that extra to it well good example of yeah what we discussed drift Terry he is extremely quick on his
Feet so we’ll see him try and make him s um get himself in a good position in in the midt area not necessarily the hardest hit but as long as difficult for the Koreans to be accurate on the back line then he’s got good working conditions again left well by Terry he
Maintaining this three-point lead good pick up from the back but kiman home Maring on the right side his he must come on a lot of confidence he in 10 played three tournaments in India towards the end of 20123 lost the quarterfinal of side Modi a super 300
Event won the next one in guahati super 100 and then lost the final in odisha but playing that many matches gives you belief and touch and the way that they’ve capitalized on that here in is just um very encouraging from a Singapore perspective that momentum of tournaments pushing you through a great
Start here for this 2024 season F four and peing at just the right time as well of course with the Paris qualification um still on till April 28th this year smart very not part of the Plan so they tied it up Kim J oh good hustle up at the net they really solid Kim and John Kim um for a long period in 2023 he was injured in his um in his left knee he still played but on a number of occasions they always almost played the
Um opposite formation with Jong at the back and and Kim only capable of cover the net but it seems like his knee is um getting better even though he’s got a a small strapping on it today but he’s definitely as you can see that he’s got good
Lift certainly not favoring it in any way sure it’s just a supportive strapping started their partnership will they played a couple of tournaments in 2019 smaller tournaments Kim and u j actually they started their partnership in Korea open on homea in the tournament where they defeated he and
Tan did well the semi final there and then it took like 7 months or so where the results were mediocre before they sort of found their way and I feel they’re really really solid in their basic game and well that’s what’s always about fundamentals building on top of them
Yeah and knowing what you’re going what do you have to do in the um uh different situations that occur during a match and and become better and better reading the game the same way um decision making anticipation finding out response of course yeah yeah so they’ve taken a two point lead
Now’ definitely done enough to force as you can see Terry and Jessica into a defensive pattern now Terry’s trying to push it and does well over eight n just watching that all the way and I think he was 100% sure but I guess who is into that corner that’s been the really drifty
Corner over the week as he said Ste got to be very careful from mid Court to back 10 they have settled into another solid pattern and are one point away from 118 First Mid game interval lead [Applause] time over 9 10 but not yet 10 so they do get the lead at 11
10 e seconds play back on the BO stand back on the board so back on court for second phase of game two and steam the first coaching advice from the um teams what do you Reon was a general idea on both sides yeah I think um for
The Koreans it was how to um how to cope with the drift and I think we’re going to see them try and and um go for soft paced shots and perhaps a bit higher lift when they’re forced to lift for the Singapore and pair um they they basically want to uh
Try and and keep control as well CU they don’t want to live to the Koreans right uh so so that’s that’s pretty much um smaller adjustments and otherwise continuing as um as they did here in the first game they have to be reasonable content one of the
Situations to solve is what happens when Kim um plays from the front Court that’s a new a new shot that Terry he’s just picked up on I don’t think that’s legal at all I do believe you have to be attached to your racket when it hits good counter
That’s why the Singapore pair is so dangerous when Terry heat gets a chance to Counterattack really really good racket skills from the mid Court area has he 112 that was a great return by in one steep falling backwards as well the Deep Ser that almost out Fox him but he started moving
Early excellent shot great angle picked out by Kim 14 11 141 that’s brilliant that’s typical example on being able to do the basics 15 have to be able to withstand the defense from the female player that’s a minimum uh requ requirement in in the mix and then um turn the defense around make
Your way to the net which she did with great speed going the basics I mean J is an accomplished women’s doues player so she can play from the back court she doesn’t have those those spectacular skills it’s not like she’s B backwards intercepting something but the things that she’s required to do she’s
Extremely you need that in every sport you need workmanlike journeyman players that come in and and put down that Foundation block which you can work off absolutely agree yeah he and T certainly trying to bite back here I think they were up 52 um in the Singapore and so 147 from that point
On couldn’t hear what he was saying one but he would check it kimho and wav and hi of course the last two remaining seeds in the draw 16 challenge Jessica 10 super [Applause] quality oh Tess just could build off that over powerful attack by Terry heat 17 13 so
1713 this is where Kim Jong going to have to keep it really tight you want to close out this match for this game another 14 17 show tumble that makes all the difference sometimes thank you well important serve this time J too delicate on the left side you say okay we’re missing this
Then next time it’s there then lift no that’s not what we’re going to see we’re going to see her try and do it the same again because that’s what’s needed that’s what you need to play in the makx double you can’t just lift all the time wait that’s a good deception oh that’s
Brilliant Kim wo not very often found out like that but he was this time super racked movement short short red movement very hard to judge where it’s look at that yeah look at that almost like a little explosion in the wrist and he was also Jessica was also
Blocking the view as well there was literally no way Kim was going to know or have any indication as to where that was going W important points played well 1617 a little bit too early 18 16 John was all over that so early not really set the tempo at that
Point just see respons right now 16 and also the U the way she stands upright you can only do that if you trust your partner service otherwise it’s really dangerous standing there right right 20 game point 16 so four game points get [Applause] quick shot and Terry he does the hard work and
Then that Finishing Touch just beyond him 2116 in 18 minutes did some great work there Terry and he looks up to the heavens she looking it from that angle it was a was up in the air for spe up again so back on court game two and the
Koreans switching sides of course do not Che the CH and of course can play with a little bit more second less nerves I should say if even if they had nerves to start off with because they at one game now now the Koreans can use the full PT
One low more confidence and the opposite is the case for he in t but can he in turn take the initiative then their attack will have a bit more bite I think the problem is going to be the initiative right he was lucky that time but great
Court coverage from kimano I think that answers that question about that me yeah and also the the strapping has come off now so uh oh yeah he’s feeling fineit left that jessan touch the top of the table I think it was going to be shot but um she was already committed a
Fall love lead and it’s going to start playing on their mind if this gets bigger and bigger as first point on the board another net C for his own net from Singapore think two magnets one one on the net one one on the shuttle thank you this paulus fman the Indonesian doubles coach
Working in Singapore little quality on the serve there from Jessica turn he had lots of options Kim found wanting there Beau variation instead of attacking the first one Terry he see has moved a little bit too far back I think that’s brilliant um combination there getting her out of
Position getting an even better opportunity on the second one that’s the patience for you great well spotted [Applause] well they might be behind but they seem to be relishing this side of the court so far can look from where he’s hitting his last shot again ter he look at his feet
Here well in front of the first of the two trim lines well not well in front but in front of the first two trm lines with the drift and makes it much more problem than he can score good play well one home targeting Jess T work that shot there didn’t have the
Right quality it was directly in the racket of Jung here comes that one yeah they’re just so quick to work together yeah and they do get those opportunities yeah exactly sensing that hey my partner’s shot is um sort of better than the opponent can come up with in
Reply and sensing where the opportunity is is going to arise She feeling a little bit under pressure at the moment J in um on the Play From Below the tape she’s very keen to move backwards let’s see if he and T can exploit that another loose serve and again it’s another wonderful shot into the back court for Kim
One one of the things I like is that he stays there look at this he stays there plays a good shot stays there plays a good shot when when you’re a little bit lower level then you’re sort of always a little bit as to where’s the next one
Going to come so you move back towards the base position that’s not the way to do it keep that side of the Court covered stand your ground 57 five seven and I like the way that Terry he especially it’s not been overall by that first game loss coming out firing great play by
J making the right choices yes definitely on point today JN was on point yesterday as well in fact in that um win against Shang Hong see another R goes another service that touch the top of the table so that’s something you got to pick up on as an opponent and say
That hey maybe we can put a little bit of pressure on on her what about a flick serve here and then a drop shot in front of her how was thought that was going to play out exactly as you said but but again clever reply from Jung she didn’t hit it
Just played it below the table and it’s totally in line with Korean mix double strategy going all the way back to when pong the head coach of Japan when he was playing for Korea clear clear mix double strategy when you flick get it below the tape don’t necessarily hit it hard and
Give the opponents counterattacking opportunities amazing well now there’s just one point in IT service with Jessica I mean I I don’t know how he thought of that shot in his head I think he changed his mind a couple of times but look at just the end result the end
Result get away from me that’s it and look at that I mean look at the accuracy of it that was good pressuring hustling play by jessan looked like the Koreans were just about to settle into a devastating attack she just managed to confuse him keep
And took a piece of John n’s ear by the looks of it that’s the fault obviously of swan shot him on her with all the time in the world that trying to challenge him on the timing and uh very well done thumbs up from coach powers and a very nice comeback here yes
By he and 10 what an important point nine all all comebacks start from one point maybe that’s the point it’s going to need of course more concerted effort right now before the interval but they’ll feel great for themselves here in town if they go in 11 n
Up after training of course fall love in this first phase of game [Applause] two no other option for John at that point drag it WI just saw the gestures from the Korean coach he wanted J to move all to the left so that she could play a clear forehand shot
There coaches always have the smart arms always know what you should have done oh slip and I almost picked it up well well that was a great point 10 all it’s interesting you should say that about coaches I always get that feeling when you see the coaches that it must be
So frustrating for you guys when you’ve got the play in your head and you’re just trying to translate it to the player we we always um the stamina is never a problem and we always Comm and collected so we always know what you should have done it’s much more
Difficult when you handing on the court I can tell you yeah oh that’s great power from Tim 1110 at the break Back on the so making their way back on now for the most important phase of play yet in the Quest for Terry he and Jessica tan here at the Malaysia open 11 their greatest achievement to make semi-final of a super 1000 but if they want to make a final and they’re
Going to have to get moving right now no on certain terms they’re going to have to win this second phase of game two oh that was a very significant rally there with the fight for the initiative you can see the Koreans they were not backing complicated pattern of
Play very well placed by John just off the right knee of Terry heat service return from Terry heat brilliant fantastic big backourt player in full swing 11 the Koreans they cannot contain the Singapore and attack and as you said right I think it was about half a game ago that uh Terry
E definitely got his range sorted out terms of this drifty Arena shot same shot that Terry he won previous rally with now for Kim going all the way across the player standing across female player and it’s going to be a battle in the service situation now that’s the best chance
For he and tan to get the initiative brilliant serve going towards the right shoulder but more and more into the middle of the body so becomes more and more difficult to play um a good shot with the forehand for Jessica tan that’s a good one definitely tighten themselves up those first three
Shots that’s good from Jong and it sets up Kim wano who who goes big he just loves it when he gets serviced like that 15 11 they got the attacking Advantage from J L yeah and and Terry he was a little bit uh off balance and he thought he could
Play it into the uh net area but there was J now where she should be thank you doing what needs to be done yeah and they’ve done very well here 1511 dangerous times for hinan yeah let’s see where he Target his serve again where this going from right
Shoulder into the middle of the body this time backand return super car he is wasting no time time getting on the attack and it’s a competent and effective attack as well as we’ve seen number of times already in this match and the thing now is they need to
Score some points in their own serve the int ter that probably would have been interception of the week we got it senses what K is going to do at this yeah pushed him off to the left that’s what you can do when you’re quick on your feet yeah he is very quick onestly
Kimo had to track all the way back oh wow Terry didn’t expect that to come [Applause] back it’s a Savage misre at a key time [Applause] 13 you could have played it in a favorable position l wice so 1613 and that pressure building oh it’s the classic top right corner that’s given them their 17 point Serv is super important it has to U give you the initiative otherwise you ear in big problems and the
Option that looked really high that’s from high in terms of perhaps illegal the service judge is awake well points falling quickly now and Kim and JN closing in on a spot the final been a good little fight between these pairs in this opening semi-final of of the day they not giving up yet
14 19 John as you can see definitely feeling the pressure a little bit [Applause] Kimo as you were saying spent a lot of last year after the net because of the injury the kind of skill that he picked up and knows what the game plan would be for the
Singaporeans trying to get on the attack six match points again beautiful variation from Terry he on the first attack sliced smash not an awful and then the next one killed on that jum so they got the serve back but it is Last Chance Saloon No mistakes allowed they’ve got to keep pressuring
D they kep from [Applause] K that’s one first point to get the ball rolling F the done ter it’s dous to do it in this situation here he went the other way and the other way was too short maybe he wasn’t used to doing it that’s why maybe the nerves of
The moment got to him but in 40 minutes kimho and Jong n have made it through to their first final of the year in the first event of the Year 2116 2116 score symmetry and they’re looking for number one Kim wonho and Jong n match won by Kim yho Anda y 216
216 so they will now face either changan way or what’s na Nino in the final we’ll see that match later on right now though pran through to the Final Coming up next it is the Epic women’s single semi-final taiu Ying taking on chenu F don’t go Anywhere [Applause] [Applause] Back at the Malaysia open here in aards Arena in quo and it’s semi-finals Saturday fans in full attendance and getting larger here at the 16,000 capacity Arena look at the order of play for semi-final Saturday and we’ve already had of course that 41 minutes wonderful performance by Kim W
And Jong and up next it is one of the great matches the current ERA of women’s singles taiu Ying taking on chenu faith number four Tak number two L one of those glorious events to kick off the year where look at that semi-final lineup the only person missing
