Hey everybody thanks for tuning in I’m George connley with scratch golf tips today we’re looking at the short game of John ROM Romo has some of the best hands in all of professional golf we’ve seen so many great Spaniards like seev B steros and Sergio Garcia really just
Work some magic especially out of the sand and around the greens so I’m going to be going over three main components of John ROM’s short game that make him one of the best in the world and how you can use that to improve your own short game and shoot lower scores you’re going
To want to stick around for the third component of John ROM’s short game master class which is super super important but to start off let’s talk about the understanding of circumstance with your chip shots this is something that ROM is absolutely excellent at and when I say understanding of circumstance
Is I’m talking about evaluating your lie understanding where the ball is sitting in the Fairway in thick rough in thin rough where’s the grain where is the hole in terms of where you’re hitting your golf shot ROM’s shot selection and understanding of circumstance is so great because he can really take the
Ball up high very nicely he has a great flop shot but if he has a lot of green to work with and a back pin he’s not going to do it because he understands that hitting a lower golf shot and having it just kind of Ride Along the
Green and run up to the hole is a much more effective shot if you’ve ever watched rombo on the television or even seen him in person around the greens you’ll notice he circles around the ball often he’ll walk up to the hole to understand the break in front of him
Between him and the hole a lot of amateur golfers only really read the greens when they’re cutting but if you have a fairly basic chip and that Chip is going to spend a lot of time on the ground absolutely take your time to read the green so the understanding of
Circumstance is something that takes practice and it takes time to understand what works for you and how different grains and different grass types react if you’re playing at a new course of different grass definitely spend 10 minutes just dropping your ball around the green and understanding how the
Rough feels how the Fairway feels Etc next let’s talk about practice a lot of golfers love to practice the driver they love to practice you know hitting the the Stinger three irons they’re really sexy shots it’s time to start spending a lot of practice around the greens John
ROM spends an unbelievable amount of time practicing around the greens you can see him here with a towel uh over his chest and he’s tucking both of his arms this is a great way that he practices and a lot of people can practice at home this is going to focus
On maintaining the triangle between your chest line and your two arms as they’re connected to the club it’s a great drill that anybody can do super simple and it’s going to really also promote upper body ation through the ball so this is a great way to work on your mechanics when
Chipping aside from mechanics just try and expose yourself to different weird shots if there’s a bunker around the green try and put the ball you know plugged in the bunker and try and hack that out or try and have the ball outside of the bunker but you have to be
Standing in the bunker these are tricky shots that on the golf course many people struggle with because they just don’t know how to approach it they’re not confident but if you spend some time practicing and exposing yourself to different shots as ROM does so efficiently then that will really help
Improve our short game and finally the absolute most important aspect to John ROM’s short game is his undeniable creativity and versatility around the greens as I said earlier he’s great with the Flop shot but if he doesn’t need the Flop shot he can turn to a low shot he
Can also hit it really high and spinny he can hit it low have it run out he can hit a standard mid trajectory shot he’s so versatile and he understands chipping so well that no matter what is thrown to him he’s able to adapt what he wants to
Do with the club he’ll change CH Club he’ll change his aiming Point his alignment he can do anything because he works at it and he’s he’s really creative he can Tinker a lot and I think when you look at some of the greatest short games that we’ve seen in the past
20 30 years nichelson Woods spe these are guys who are very creative they think outside the box if there’s a fairly difficult Chip Shot and they say Okay a basic chip here will get me to about 15 ft that’s fine a great creative chipper will say well that basic chip
Will get me to 15 feet but if I can put this off my front foot take a 60 Dee wedge open it up I can probably hit this to three or four feet that’s the creativity that is so valuable and again having that creative mind is great but
You also need the ability and the skills to back it up which is why we go right back into the importance of practice as I mentioned earlier but those are three tips that you can really really hone in your chipping and lower some scores I’ll tell you what it’s a great feeling when
You’re on the course and you miss a green but you’re really dialed in with your tripping and you just know that you’re going to get that ball up and down and safe par it really frees you up and it will absolutely posit heavily impact other parts of your game and get
