Alabama Robbed Of First Down After Rose Bowl Referees Miss Blatant Special Teams Penalty On Michigan

Refs Getting Crushed For Big Missed Penalty In The Rose Bowl

Well, it didn’t take long for the Rose Bowl officiating crew to make a costly mistake.

After an unsuccessful third down run from Jalen Milroe, Alabama sent punter James Burnip on the field to flip field position.

Burnip’s punt sent Semaj Morgan back to the 19-yard line, which is quite good for Alabama. The issue, however, is that Alabama should’ve received the ball back. The referees somehow missed a blatant “running into the kicker” call.

Alabama only needed three yards to gain a new set of downs. Obviously, the penalty would’ve given them the necessary yardage to move the chains.

College football fans couldn’t believe Michigan got away with this no-call.

“How do they not call that? That’s definitely running into the kicker,” one fan said.

Another fan wrote, “Michigan got away with running into the kicker.”

“How did the refs not throw a flag on a clear “running into the kicker” against Michigan? That would have been a 1st down for Alabama,” a third fan added.

For what it’s worth, the Rose Bowl officiating crew is from the Big 12.

Time will tell if that penalty ends up costing Alabama

The Rose Bowl is being televised on ESPN. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit are on the call.

  1. Bama has gotten away with crap like this all this year and many many times in the past. All the sudden it doesn’t feel good when the shoes on the other foot huh

  2. The punter framed his kick and left his leg out to get the penealty. That is not a flag in any league. It has to be deliberate. And has to hit the plant leg.

  3. Any time people lose its always the refs fault. Dont leave to game in the hands of the refs and you wount worry about looking for excuses after you lost.

  4. Looks like they going to give Harbaugh a title just like Bowden. The one they always wanted but never good enough without help.

  5. I love the people here saying "it's not a penalty in any league."

It is a penalty in the NCAA and the NFL. You have to give the kicker space. And he didn't dive like he was trying to block or anything. This was a minimum of running into the kicker and may have been borderline roughing the kicker. Even if you dive at the ball you have to dive in front of the kicker not at the kickers kicking bubble. Even ESPNs rules expert said this was a blatant penalty.

  6. Who cares! As Many times as they got away with facemasks and holding on defense this season. Who cares. They lost. They also tackled JJ McCarthy out of bounds on a play late in the fourth quarter and no call was made.

  7. The refs missed a bad holding call on Alabama the play before this, and later missed a late hit on McCarthy out of bounds. Take the good with the bad.
