Preview: After going down in the Gqeberha T20I despite fifties from stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh, India was back to their best in Johannesburg which helped them level the three-match series 1-1. It’s pertinent to mention that the opening T20I in Durban was washed out due to incessant rain. The action now shifts to the ODIs, a three-game series beginning Sunday (December 17) at The Wanderers. The second ODI will take place on Tuesday (December 19) in Gqeberha while Paarl will host the third and final ODI on Thursday (December 21).

Only three players including KL Rahul from India’s World Cup squad have been retained for the ODIs. Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav are the other two players. Rahul will lead India after Rohit Sharma, the regular skipper, requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour. Iyer will feature in just the first ODI. The 29-year-old is expected to link up with Rohit & Co. to prepare for the Test series.

Suryakumar, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, too, have been rested. Mohammed Shami is injured. Deepak Chahar has been withdrawn from the ODIs due to a family emergency. Akash Deep has been confirmed as Chahar’s replacement.

India, the two-time ODI world champions, could be on the path to a reinvention in the 50-over format, and the likes of Rinku, Tilak Varma, Mukesh Kumar, and Arshdeep Singh will have reasons to believe that they’ll get a good number of games to make their cases for the Champions Trophy 2025 and ODI World Cup 2027.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will open the batting alongside Sai Sudharsan, a likely debutant. Rinku, Deep, and Rajat Patidar, all uncapped in the ODI format, are set to be part of the white-ball reset.

Meanwhile, India’s support staff – Rahul Dravid (coach), Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach) – will not be part of the ODI series and will instead “oversee the preparations for the Test series”. The Rahul-led side will be assisted by the ‘A’ team staff comprising batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, bowling coach Rajib Datta, and fielding coach Ajay Ratra.

Cricket South Africa has also given a break to key players – skipper Temba Bavuma, Gerald Coetzee, and Marco Jansen. Aiden Markram will captain the ODI team in Bavuma’s absence. Kagiso Rabada is unavailable due to a heel injury. Anrich Nortje and Wayne Parnell continue to recover from their stress fracture and shoulder issue respectively.

Wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne, who last played an ODI in March 2022, has been recalled.

South Africa, who reached the final four at the ODI World Cup, have gone with an experienced batting line-up including Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. The bowling department has fresh faces (Nandre Burger, Ottniel Baartman, and Mihali Mpongwana) who’ll be looking to make a mark.
