Quarterback and they have a lot lot of good players in that team why would that job not be interesting to you I am not going to talk about jobs what I want to talk about and focus on is my role and responsibility here to support you in

This podcast all right we are going to talk about the draft order though and we’ll parlay that into teams that could potentially trade up for quarterbacks there are a ton of them among the top 18 picks and um so let’s start with the we’ll start with the top we’ll go

Through this thing here because I have a few questions for you we know the Bayers currently have the number one overall pick and and I were just doing the math uh with our our pencil and paper and old school calculator the Cardinals could go 0 and two and the Panthers go two and0

And there’s about a 30% chance the Cardinals could get that first overall pick so let’s start there let’s say that happens and by the way it’s pretty curious that this is the week that Bryce young has his best game we don’t get an opportunity to talk about Bryce

Young amaz but we we’ll revisit Bryce next week um if you’re at the top and you’re Arizona what are you doing because Kyler Murray’s played well and new ownership not new owners excuse me new GM new head coach they’ve done a great job with that team with they don’t quite have the

Players but what are you Kyler’s not their quarterback no he’s their quarterback uh they don’t have an option I I’m sorry Kyler’s not the guy they drafted he could be their quarterback but if they have the number one pick you’re still sticking with Kyler I have to stick with

Kyler and then I’m gonna probably do everything I can to trade out of that pick down so far but not where gets me out of the position to take a Marvin Harrison Jr you can’t move that contract the contract would be devastating to the cap and the dead money a year from now

Let us build let us have another very good draft and then let’s make a decision on Kyler Murray a year from now when if we do decide to trade him and look at the quarterbacks of the in next year’s draft that makes so much more sense to me than trying to do something

This year and it’s interesting you say that so do you think about next year’s draft uh you know 16 17 months from now when you’re doing this now no it’s it’s you no you’re you’re trying to figure out what the heck is coming out in this

Year’s draft it’s it’s you know but as a general manager you’re always going to have your eye on the future so if we’re sitting in there we’re talking ownership we’re planning uh for the future of the Arizona Cardinals then let’s lay out our offseason plan one of the discussions

I’m sure will be Kyler Murray one of the discussions will be his contract uh the evaluation of Kyler Murray we don’t know how they feel through ping the offensive coordinator there uh Jonathan Ganon the head coach uh Monty the general manager all those guys will have a discussion on Kyler

Murray but they also know that if they do try to trade him or move him this year or move on from him this year that this is going to set our team back maybe another year or two because of that accelerated money and dead money coming

Into uh our salary cap so we’ve been very competitive this year we’ve only had one draft let’s have another really good draft let’s uh try to continue to trajector and upward and then we’ll make a decision on the quarterback down the road yeah they did a good job with their

Draft class Paris Johnson Jr obviously is their start at right tackle they have Trey McBride coming along their seconde tight end who’s the second round pick you have Hollywood Brown you have Rond Del Moore you get someone like Marvin Harrison Jr we talk about that with the

The Bears adding one more skill position player for Justin Fields it would I think asked you this before too I might rather have Kyler than Justin Fields right now if I’m starting the team or whatever that’s a that’s an interesting H question speaking of interesting and

2023 uh Texan situ where you have to take a quarterback but it feels like it’s pretty high it all depends on what happens I mean we can guesstimate out there and everybody throws in uh us talking heads in the media now throw throw a lot of things against the wall I

Was wonder what you’re gonna call it to see if it’ll stick or not so no one knows what the new ownership group is thinking in Washington and what if Washington and and Ron Rivera they win these last two games um you know that’ll be the interesting question and I’m

Going to ask you as a general manager if you’re sitting in a general manager chair knowing that no one knows what the future holds there but if we win these next two games maybe we’ll get another opportunity next year uh to build on to what we have they have to do get better

On defense there’s no question about that they have to get better in the running game which will help the passing game but if you’re the general manager Ryan Wilson which you you are in this podcast and I’m the ownership group and I say I’m not the ownership group I’m

The general manager and I go to the head coach and say jacobe brassett gives us the best chance to win these next two games are you benching Sam how and playing jacobe brassette through the rest of the way I mean that’s that’s the question right I no I’m asking I’m Corner you’re

The guy in the hot seat what are you doing I’m I’m talking to myself because I know that if I say it to you you’ll try to set me up for failure so I’m just talking it out loud to myself before I get to the answer oh I got 20 days

Before I start setting me up for failure I look so do I know who Sam H is yet I don’t is Sam H how as good as job Bret over the course of a football game probably not but jaob Brett’s in his mid-30s and he’s not the long-term

Answer I’m fine playing Sam H how because we they’re not you’re not going to the playoffs and we can get two more games of of data on Sam H and who he is I am leaning personally as Ryan Wilson G manager if we’re there there at three I’m leaning towards a quarterback right

Now I know you need offensive line help but there’s gonna be other offensive lineman in this class in rounds two and Beyond you take Bo NEX in round two is he gonna come in how many second second round quarterbacks come in and and have good careers for that matter how many

First- round quarterbacks that’s why you keep gambling on them so I’m fine playing Sam how and then having a serious conversation in the offseason what to do there’s not going to be much in the way of free agency Kurt Cousins is coming off the Achilles he may want

To stay in Minnesota so on and so forth so it’s not a great situation to be in for sure well let’s say you have to also have to balance that locker room down there and those guys if you if they believe that jacobe reset because they’re playing for their jobs as well

That’s guy and they believe jacobe brassett gives them the best opportunity to win games how do you balance that with also the guys in the players in the locker room and making sure that um they’re going to give you and they’re professionals they’ll give everything

They have I’m sure but if they look at it as like okay Sam how doesn’t give us a chance the way he’s been playing the last five or six weeks but jacobe brassett look what he’s done the last two times he’s came in he brought him

Back and they actually took the lead uh against the Jets after they were down significantly in the first half how do you balance that out with the future so that reminds me would you ever get calls from Agents that that say listen not telling you who to play but my player

Needs two more passes to hit his incentives so you need basically don’t put Sam how out there put toobe out there those sort of conversations or with us um yeah you have to be careful with that it’s a that’s a delicate uh balance you know um uh if you do that

And let’s say say that player doesn’t get those two receptions and the agent and the player feel that that was not because of him but because of the organization making the decision I’m not going to give him another $300,000 in his Inc for two interceptions then that goes into the

Locker room and that is a bad bad precedent to set in that locker room because then those players are looking at the front office they’re looking at the the coaching staff and it’s like what are we doing yeah can’t trust you yeah so that’s a whole another can of

Worms that you may not want to open up again that’s why you need to go back to college you can be a college GM that’s easy I heard can you imagine the college GM is the worst job in America right now all these uh directors of player Personnel that a lot

Of these because of the nil because of the December’s been like just a uh I can’t say it on air just a crapshoot on poop show P portal and everything that’s going on I can’t imagine with the Wild Wild West is going in college football right

Now um how you know just like your your guy McCord who’s coming up well they’re going to play in a New Year’s Day six bowl game he didn’t like maybe wood he was getting an NL money maybe didn’t like whatever he didn’t like he left right so left them without their

Starting quarter back that’s and what are you doing I mean just talking to some of these people and some of the side jobs that I have it’s like okay you’re going after player X player X says he has $500,000 in N money you can’t verify

That he can be BS in you he cannot be in the NFL it’s different because those contracts have to re be reported to the league they have to be approved by by the league they look at they have to be approved by the NFL paa I mean

Everything is there so you know when you’re working with an agent and you’re doing a contract if he’s lying you’re going to see that contract so you got to make sure that that agent has to make sure as well that you can negotiate and do all the little tricks of the trade

That you do in negotiations but eventually everybody’s going to know what that contract is and if he says X and he only got Y and you had y on the table or a little bit more than why then that becomes an issue in a relationship all right so Debo he’s out

On the college director job but the charger job is still on the TBL what I’m hearing hey D put up the I to you this what one thing I will not be a GM in the NFL again I absolutely guarantee you that what if someone want to pay you $20

Million a year okay then we’ll talk all right and then you got to hire me and dbo for uh half a million dollars combined we’ll do it for half million combined yeah and we’ll keep we’ll do the podcast from my new office that’s right Deo put the draft order up again I

Want to go down the list here so Rick let’s say that Drake May and Caleb Williams are gone uh one and two and then you can take your pick of the next quarterbacks Jaden Daniels Michael penck Jr JJ McCarthy whomever I’m gonna go down the list and you tell me whether

They should take a quarterback or not and you can even tell me which one it is if it’s not Caleb or not Drake because already gone so number three Washington yeah who should they take if they’re taking I don’t know if you’re honest with yourself and I’m going to

Ask you I’m just the guy in the corner but I would raise my hand and ask our general manager Ryan Wilson are these guys worthy of a top three pick the rest of the best or are we reaching because we’re saying that we need a quarterback so desperately yeah

In velvet like George castanza so I if I’m Wasington I’m thinking long and hard about a quarterback we agree that New England should take a quarterback right even at five at four they have to seriously consider that yes so if the the big three are there not named Caleb

Or Drake if it’s JJ your guy JJ my guy like JJ so why are you even talking about him I want to include him here because I know you liked him so I’m giving you the opportunity yeah that’s a whole another discussion why you don’t

Like him I don’t dislike him I want to see how the weekend goes with the big game against Alabama and then we can reconvene and talk about that but the Patriots need a quarterback anyone in particular that you would prefer we don’t know what the coach of Staff or

Anything’s gonna be like but yeah it’s all it’s like I said all speculation and you know what is what’s the system because it also has to be what the system is that you’re going to try to run to make the fit for the quarterback as well I mean you bringing in whoever you’re

Bringing in if there is change in New England and who knows that then what’s the system we’re going to run and that may dictate which direction you go on these quarterbacks what about if both tackles are there that we like fosu and and Joe Al and the quarterbacks not

Named Caleb and Drake are there at five for the Giants um boy I’m gonna have to seriously consider one of those tackles okay we gotta we got to find out when Daniel Jones is coming back because he may not be ready in August or September coming

Off the ACL Tyrod came in for Tom uh Tommy DeVito last week so hey as we make these role plays things up can Debo be like the owner that’s sitting next to me and I can whisper in his ear watch what this guy does it’s incredible the decision this guy’s about to

Make to do with this get you a crash test dummy that looks like prisco and you can whisper into his ear you can put your arm around him that’ll be your little Debo’s the owner I’m sitting next to Debo in a corner owner buddy all right so Titans no bears again they pick

Again at eight now they keep winning so they keep falling down the Jets at nine are going to have serious conversations about a quarterback the Falcons at 10 they’re a ton of teams I think I counted 12 teams Debo can you scroll down to 14 because I have a Rick’s been asking me

Tough questions I got a really tough question for Rick I know I just I I just uh reflect them back to you you’re the decision maker and we don’t have to linger on this because you have a good relationship with uh you’re really tight with George pton the the GM of the

Broncos you guys are super close been together forever but Russ Wilson has they have a decision to make on Russ so March 5th I believe is the actual date the new league year starts uh 37 million is coming his way it’s going to be guaranteed and I I

Looked it up so let me give you the math Rick so if they cut Russ before June 1st that’s a 72 million cap charge in 2024 that’s the ri the Band-Aid off option if you just want to move on from Rush and eat it before June 1st post June 1st

Designation in terms of release 35.4 million goes on the 2024 books 53.6 million goes on the 2025 bucks in terms of dead money now if you allow that 37 million to vest if you give Russ the 37 million guaranteed it’s virtually the same as Plan B above it’s going to be

About 35 A5 million cap charge in 2024 with Russ on the roster and 55 and change million wise uh 2025 is what Russ is going to charge you so you can rip the Band-Aid off you can spread it out over two years post June 1st without Russ or just pay Russ the

Same amount of money and keep them so Shawn pton is great coach he’s done a really good job sort of turning that operation around offensively Russ isn’t the guy he ever seemed to be at the end of the Seattle run in terms of letting him cook and you have the 14th pick

What do you think very interesting is it is that that’s GNA be another tough decision because right now I don’t know what Shawn pton thinks of Russ Wilson I mean you read the articles out there it’s not like he’s endorsing Russ or coming out and defending Russ

Which makes it uh okay I’m I just traded a first round pick plus I think for Shawn Payton right and he’s making a lot of money yep uh so you know eventually I think this decision will defer to sha pton and what he wants to do but also understanding

The consequences that comes along with that decision and I was thinking about it you know we talk about all these rookie quarterbacks that have had to play this year to varying degrees of success mostly have played the nine first round picks and excluding will Levis have played like backup quarterbacks like you

Can’t really lean on them for more than a handful of games with realistic expectations I wonder if you start thinking about guys maybe a Jobe brassette stop Gap or even like a Joe flacko type stop gap before he signed his deal with Cleveland I think he’s there for at least another

Year but no one wanted those guys at the beginning of the year job Bret was on the roster but Joe Flaco was at home for till six weeks ago yeah but who I mean honestly if you’re honest with yourself who would have thought Joe flacker with

His age can come off the couch and do what he’s doing and that’s the other thing so it’s so hard to figure out there’s so many can and can he maintain that at that age I will say I feel better about Joe flacko maintaining something close to that than a rookie

Quarterback who we just don’t we just don’t know it seems like it’s up and down but again you’re just you’re hope isn’t a plan and those are plans that are based on hope it feels like so I don’t know it’s not a great situation it could be worse you do have Shawn pton

You still have Russ Wilson the team has played a ton better down the stretch despite played better defense play oh my gosh yeah couldn’t have played worse I mean after that 70 Burger but losing to the Patriots doesn’t help but I don’t think this is

Going to be a team making a deep playoff run anyway at least this year so we’ll find out together March early March is the decision time for for Russ and whether he’s there or not and and we’ll go from man that’s a lot of no first

Round pick eat all that c money and then trying to make something work to your point that’s why you’re you’re sitting in the corner you’re not making the making the tough to decisions not fun no comment all right all right Rick I mentioned some of the teams that could trade it for a

Quarterback and Debo Rick actually said this out loud on HQ yesterday Ryan Wilson did phenomenal work on the draft trade-up chart that we we all looked at you did that’s a lot of work to sit there and dig through brought me to tears but let’s talk about some of these

Trade-ups and why you know on the One season actually end for me and you never if this is how it’s going to be it’s all rainbows and butterflies from going forward I usually take the trees down after the New Year some people throw the tree out on Christmas

Day I found out are you that you’re not I feel like you leave the tree up for a while yeah you leave the tree up it’s a bad luck to take the Christmas ornaments and trees down till after the New Year do you have a real tree in Florida you

What how do you guys do the trees in Florida I don’t are there tree farms in Florida probably not right no no not no because I don’t want to clean up pine needles and then the dogs are underneath the tree licking the water and it’s it’s

A mess that’s a real thing too all right let’s look at some of these uh trades over the last 10 years or so because in the moment you’re like oh this is gonna this is going to be great they’re GNA go get the so and so and turn the organization

Around so how about this I’ll go through some of these I’ll read you the trade details and you tell me which team ended up winning in the end so back in 2012 and the first thing I’m going to ask you is if you were surprised when the news came down when Washington

Traded up with the Rams uh they went all the way up to number two and they were at number five originally so they didn’t move up that far but they had to get up to number two in 2012 because Andrew Luck was going first to the Colts and then Robert

Griffin the the junior Robert Griffin II made a a push to to Big qb2 when you saw or heard about that trade did that shock you at all because it happened a good a good time before the actual draft if I recall correctly yeah no and they also drafted Kurt

Cousins that year as well I think which was weird in the moment you’re like why are you using a fourth round pick on that quarterback which in retrospect feels exactly like a shanan quarterback and RG3 feels like the quarterback that maybe Kyle thought he was getting in try

Lance well RG3 was a unique athlete and he can run and I remember watching him play live up at Yukon when he was a Baylor and it was different back in 2012 um on judging quarterbacks you know because there were still the pocket passers of the world that were coveted

And guys that weren’t as athletic and you had to adjust your scheme I remember when we played RG3 in 2012 as rookie year and listening to the defensive staff and how difficult it was to defend him because of how many plays that he made with his legs uh and he was you

Know a phenomenal athlete you know he he can throw the ball um but he got hurt and when he got hurt I don’t know if he was the same quarterback as he was before the injury but he had a I don’t know if he was

Rookie of the year that year but he had a phenomenal rookie year if I remember he had a fantastic rookie year got hurt towards the end of the regular season SL playoffs and he sort of talked himself into playing in the playoff game and hurt his knee even more I believe and

That was a whole talking point and thing sort of unravel for from there for for that team but uh I would knowing you I would guess that you had concerns about his size coming out because he was no he was tall enough he’s slight a frame though he’s like Jaden Daniel’s body

Type it feels like is that sound about right yeah I don’t know if he’s as tall as Jaden and I haven’t seen Jaden in person yet so I don’t know but um he he was he was lean and wiry when he came out of Baylor yes all right

So considering what RG3 was able to do over his short but pretty effective career here’s the the trade compensation and what these players ended up being you tell me which you would rather have as a GM and retrospect so you can have Robert Griffin the third or you could

Have Morris Clayborn the cornerback out of LSU jorris Jenkins who is also a first- round pick quarterback Desmond truant another cornerback good Lord Greg Robinson so you have three corners in Greg Robinson or RG3 I think the way RG3 was going I would have probably taken RG3 oh still retrospect okay all right

Now I know you’re you’re I’m assuming that I didn’t know the injuries and things like that but the way he played and who knows where he would continued to play at um before the injuries but he made an impact for the Reds the Redskins at the time uh as a rookie

Quarterback yeah no this is actually closer than I thought it might be just looking through it again in terms of the the value of the trades all right let’s go to 2016 and let’s go straight to the Eagles let’s let’s put Debo on the under the the spotlight here because the

Eagles traded up they had the number eight pick and they moved all the way up to number two to take some guy named Carson Wentz who had a chance to be MVP in 2017 I believe is when they got hurt and Nick Foles ended up being the best

Player on that team which is Debo doesn’t like to talk about that but whatever all right so they got Carson Wentz at number two and here’s what they got had to give up and what these players became Jack Conlan good lineman yeah uh they got Daryl Worley Daryl Worley offensive lineman no

I thought it was a defensive line defensive lineman okay I I may be wrong I can’t remember don’t remember his name that he must have not had a great great that’s why I was struggling Conor cook was a quarterback who rarely have ever played DeShaun Watson was part of that trade in

Terms of the subsequent picks and later drafts tawon Lewis and then for Carson Wentz and and the um a fourth round pick was also thrown in that turned into ju chesson who didn’t do much so look man I can make the case that this Carson went trade actually

Might favor the the eagles they won a Super Bowl in large part because Carson Wentz got them there Nick Foles did the rest but the picks weren’t actually absolutely home runs outside of Jack Conlin and deshun Watson so I guess the question is would you rather have Carson

It doesn’t look like the ball it doesn’t look like in the air yeah okay go ahead I just want to put that out there and there were a couple deep throws and he has NFL caliber receivers and guys with speed to get downfield and I just seen a

Lot of throws that were underthrown yeah so um but he’s an anticipatory thrower which means that he gets a ball when he can get the ball out of his hands and get in Rhythm and he gets the ball out before the receiver gets out of his break and I think he’s an accurate

Thrower where I have issues with him is some of the deep ball now a couple deep balls he does hit but if there’s pressure around his feet I don’t know if he has the hose or the arm to get it when he has to make off schedule type

Throws uh that’s that’s a concern of mine uh I read a clip on some of the uh coaches that have played against him and they think when that first 15pl script comes out that he is very good but all of a sudden it becomes way more conservative after he gets through that

15pl script where he’s not as loose or taking as many chances but then as I watch the tape I don’t know and I you know I don’t game plan in the scheme or anything like that so I didn’t get that sense when I was watching it but uh I

Still think regardless of how strong he he and maybe that’s a decision he has to make if he finishes out and they end up winning the national championship and he plays lights out but at this point before the playoffs start um I would consider definitely coming back because

I don’t I think that he’s going to be in the mix with that second tier of quarterbacks right he’s not the athlete jayen Daniels is uh JJ J McCarthy is a better athlete uh bo Nicks is a better athlete um Michael penck to me similar type athlete penck may be a little more

But pennx his arm talent to me is is better it looks night and day when you talk about those two players arm talents yeah so where’s he stack up in there where if he comes back and has another solid year and stays healthy for the

Year does he become one of the top two or three quarterbacks in next year’s draft class so he’ll he’ll have a uh the decision that he’s going to have to make but I think it’s such a strong quarterback class this year from what it looks like on paper and

What we’ve seen as we evaluated these guys through the fall that and I say that notc because there’s the two top guys but after that I think there is a pretty good group of guys that have a chance to be pretty good NFL quarterbacks it doesn’t like after the
