My name is Brian Fitzgerald – I’m an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at the Eastwood Golf Club in Kilsyth..
FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don’t feel that old.
Why do you make videos for YouTube? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.
Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.
So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.
What do you film with? – I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I’m using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.
What do you edit with? – About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere – prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio
Do you make money off YouTube? – Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? – Here’s my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip via : https://ko-fi.com/thegolfdoctor
Thanks for watching!
Brian
So one of the most frustrating things I see as a full-time golf coach is misinformation and myths and one of the biggest myths of all is that we have to keep our head still I overheard two people talking while I was coaching this morning and they were adamant you had to
Keep your head still I was busy coaching I couldn’t help but hear what they were saying but I didn’t intervene I was busy with my client but if you think about it for a minute that’s not a good thing to do there’s this myth you’ve got to keep
Your head still to play well so if I had a ball and I was going to throw the ball as far as I could but I started with the pretext I have to keep my head still how can I generate power if my head’s stationary there’s a limit to
What I can do in terms of weight transference or pressure from right foot to left foot if I really wanted to throw this ball as far as I could I would be getting back here on my right foot and I would be transferring through to the
Left foot I would be almost stomping my left foot and building pressure on that left foot as I release the ball no one says that you have to keep your head still when you throw a ball if you’re serving in tennis do you want your head to be still I think it moves
Doesn’t matter what the sport is yet for some reason everyone thinks that when you swing a golf club you’ve got to keep your head still if you want to hit it short and if you want to lose control keep your head still still if you want
To hit it a bit further and you want to hit it with better control and you don’t want to have a saw back let your head move so I’m not saying you should be swaying a lot but we need to move pressure to our right side and then
Across again to our left side so in doing that we have to move our head a little bit it’s okay if it moves a bit going back and it’s quite okay if it moves going forward forward so this the test I want you to do is when you go out
Onto the range next time you have it hit three shots with your driver trying not to move your head trying not to transfer weight just keep your head really still hit three shots see where they go on the next three shots feel like you’re going to have a little movement get in behind
The ball on your right side and then let it go on side as long as balance and you’re creating that forward pressure on that left heel I know you’re going to hit it a little bit further and you’re probably going to hit it straighter so move away from this garbage about
Keeping your head still let your head move a little bit get a bit of Freedom let’s create a bit of speed use a bit of energy it’s going to help you to play better golf if you want to play better golf I’m going to put a link to another
Video just up there I know is going to help improve your golf

Merry Christmas Brian,
Head movement seems normal yet I have heard this also, eyes on the ball for as long as possible seems the right thing
Have a great Xmas, Brian. Thanks for all your hard work making these great videos.
Merry Christmas, Brian,
One of the big myths in golf. Well explained and debunked. Thank you for all your great videos throughout the year.
Cheers
Joe
C'est vrai ça, mais d'où ça vient ce "Mythe" ?
Merci Brian et "Merry Christmas to everyone from France"
Merry Christmas Brian, keep up the great videos.
I hope you've made lots of sourdough for Xmas lunch 😊
Thanks Brian – that is a perfect tip for Christmas Day! What you say makes sense and gives freedom in making the swing. Have a great day as well mate 😃and I will try and get in a lesson with you as soon as possible.
Makes a lot of sense Brian
Merry Christmas Brian! I understand moving the head vertical is fine and it is the key to generate the power. How about moving the head horizontally? For example, moving the head up on the back swing and then move the head down on the down swing, will it causing inconsistency with fat and thin shots?
Excellent point Brian about "keeping the head still!" Rather than thinking about moving the head, I like to think of it as a "head swivel!" Does that make sense? Merry Christmas my friend from Southern California! Looking forward to more good things from you in 2024!!!
Hi Brian, thanks for your continued valuable advice. Harvey Penick advised: get behind [get your head behind the ball] on the way back and keep behind [keep your head behind the ball at impact]. Your thoughts on this? compliments of the season, jks
Merry Christmas Brian enjoy this special day
Merry Christmas Brian. I often find that if try to look at the target as I hit the ball it goes particularly well – including chip shots.
Regards
David
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thank you for all the great tips.
Is it more about keeping your eye/vision focussed on the ball? Merry Xmas. Is Eastwood practice area open to public?
