It’s hard to find simple videos that explain the game to beginners of all ages. Trying to explain things to my brilliant grandsons who are learning the game, I came up with a few simple videos.
Welcome to Grandpa’s guide to golf in this first part we’re going to try to answer the question what is the point of golf well what we’re trying to do is to get that little white ball into those holes that got the flag sticking out of them we usually try to do that either
Nine or 18 times every time we’re trying to hit the ball as few times as we possibly can now we do make need to make one thing clear the word hole is used in two different ways in golf as it’s most obvious it’s the hole in the ground like
This with the flag in it that we’re trying to get the ball into sometimes we call that the cup rather than the hole because it looks like a cup and it stops us getting confused with the other meaning of the word whole so the other meaning of the word
Hole is the hole is the area where we play the game and there are normally either nine or 18 holes on a course so down at the bottom here we can see a couple of blocks there and there’s one tucked in by that waist bin over there
And there’s another two there and that’s where we start hitting the ball from and we’re aiming to get it up to here you can probably just see in the background there is the flag or the pin sitting in the hole so we’re aiming to get from here to there and there are various
Parts of the of the grass and sand even sometimes water lots of trees in between and they’ve all got different names which is what we’ll come on to next but this is the whole in the sense of the whole of this entire area that constitutes one of the nine or 18
Sections of the course so this is a diagram showing the different parts of one of the nine or 18 holes on the car course where those blocks were is what we call the T box which we can see down here and that’s where we start hitting from and we’re
Going to aim to get the ball to the green which is that very closely moan part with the hole in the middle of it over here and in the middle of the green sometimes at the front sometimes at the back sometimes in the middle is the cup
With the flag sitting in it and you can see that’s called the flag and the cup and the bit just around the edge of the green is known as The Fringe now most of the bit between the t- box and the green is this part which
Is well known and is called the Fairway and it’s go so we’re going to try and hit the ball onto the Fairway and then we’re going to try and hit hit the ball again maybe on The Fairway and then we’re going to try and get it onto the
Green but there are various other parts that we want to try to avoid there are big holes with sand in that we call bunkers and there’s one there and there’s another one there and it’s quite hard to hit out of sand that you you’ll discover for yourself sometimes there
Are ponds or lakes what we call water hazards and very often there are trees now we don’t really want to go in the water Big Splash in the bunker bit of a thk in the sand or here’s a tree boing boing we so we’re just going to try to
Avoid those for the moment off the edge of the Fairway and around some of those hazards is some slightly less well- cut grass that is known as the rough and it’s a bit harder to hit out of the rough than it is off the Fairway so as
It simplest we’re going from here the tea to the green via the Fairway well we made a good old mess of that diagram now so how do we play the game well on each hole you’re going to hit that number of shots to get the ball to the
Green and then P it into the cup the fewer you hit the better the number of shots you take on the hole is your score and when you first play you’ll probably take at least six shots from the tea to the cup so in the next section Grandpa’s
Guide to golf part two we’re going to look at the different golf shots hope you’ve enjoyed that and we’ll want to go on to the next part
