2023 Vlogmas Day 23 | Woodway Disc Golf Park, TX

Welcome to Vlogmas 2023, I am super excited to once again be bringing you guys 25 days of 25 different courses mostly around the Texas area. Day 23 brought us to a course I had never played before and one of the most beautiful courses in the Waco area! Woodway Park Disc Golf Course located on the banks of Lake Waco is gorgeous and more challenging than the eye test shows! A well manicured park with stunning views this course is a true destination in the Waco DG scene that holds its weight even amongst the heavy hitters!

Are they manipulating the weather to create this wind to try to thwart day 23 of vlogmas we’re on to something welcome back everybody this is day 23 of vlogmas 2023 I’m Connor O’Reilly with Team lonar dis and team OTB discs and today we’re on the banks of Lake Waco at Woodway Park

Technically we’re in Woodway Texas just outside of Waco proper maybe only 10 15 minutes from downtown and this park is a gym right off the lake as we mentioned it has well manicured trees throughout as we’ve been here this morning we’ve seen a number of trees filled and cleared out mulched

Already by the parks department so they obviously care about the park out here and it’s a beautiful property the wind is up today it’s a 20 plus m per hour gust so that’s going to be something to manage throughout the round the course looks to be on the on the shorter side

But it looks to also have some good challenging HS and I hope you guys enjoy its variety thanks for watching let’s check out the action whole one here at Woodway Disc Golf Park it’s 342 ft dead straight slightly down the hill we currently have 20 plus mph headwind coming at us so that’s

Going to make today interesting playing off the banks of Lake wo there’s a row of trees as you get to circle’s Edge making you kind of pick G as you get in there nothing else really in your way on this hole I’m going to go Sig just to deal with that

Headwind and so I can hang it out extra wide knowing that it’s going to take a massive flare skip o look a little wider than intended but you could see it skip back at the end I should be putting back uphill at it from Circle one’s Edge and right now

My discs are sunbathing if you’ve ever gone from your disc being stored in a cool place to getting out in the sunshine sometimes you’ll notice they’re extra slippery all you got to do is throw them in the Sun for 1 2 3 minutes and now they’re ready to go they don’t

Feel all slick they’re not cold while your hand is warm and you don’t have that kind of temperature change that causes that bad grip looking at a Tailwind Circle Edge putt basket has quite a bit of lean to it going to have to make sure I’m in the center mass of the chains

Oh just shy that Tailwind drop also it’s important to note that if you’re out here playing at Woodway they painted the entire basket yellow so you might want to bust out a backup putter if you care about getting your disc marked up cuz uh yeah it’s going to get

Dyed with a little bit of this yellow paint at least it helps with visibility right yeah whole two is a beautiful par three 390 ft dead straight ahead you can play straight at it through this well-groomed row of cedar trees that’s about as good of a tree canopy as you’ll

See out of cedar trees so shout out to the parks department out here for keeping everything nice there’s also that right side Gap that I’m eyeing up with my bravo warbird a little bit of uphill run up here and um this t- box is kind of too

Short for me to do a full run up unless I just want to go corellis three-step style I like my fourth step so that makes it an awkward kind of transition step for me deciding how to do the little step up but we’ll figure it out

Now I know if you’re a counting you might say hey con that was five steps I know I needed a momentum step there and that was the line I was looking for unsure if I got the ground play to put me to Circle one’s Edge or if I have a

Circle two look here either way pretty happy with the line I committed to there we’re going to go bonus shot up the gut I want to see if I can jam the foo there it’s a disc I’ve really been trying to learn trying to figure out cuz I know

Once I do it’s going to open up some shots for me yeah that was really solid held a little bit longer than I expected but it is also pretty windy out here it did stable up at the end though and finished back to Flat the Frio pulled the CTP

Maybe I should have went with that Gap but I it’s like the bigger side to the right knowing that at the worst I was was probably going to have a long look like I do right here another Circle Edge putt facing some headwind left to right

It feels like and we have a brand new disc catcher so that’s awesome to see I feel like just on my couple quick glances of the course so far I can tell it has a lot of character this is a beautiful property and you know already having the

Two more challenging courses in Waco right down the street you don’t need to make another championship course here make it more beginner friendly make it just show showcase this beautiful terrain and I think new baskets and new teads out here could really make this a destination course

Truly I’d recommend it if it had them even even without them I’m still going to recommend it cuz I think it’s a fun play so far bit of a dangerous green man I’m just barely low today got to figure it out in this this windy weather but it’s all right got to

Put it closer as well especially when the wind’s gusting in the 20s well simple tap in for the par par start looks like those might be two of the longer par 3es on the course and also really nice to see this the next T marker that next T signage and even just

A basic T sign telling you the number and the distance I think is huge you don’t have to have a fancy T sign but it’s letting people what te they’re know what PE what te they’re on and how car they’re supposed to throw it it’s really

Big and letting them know where to go next so you don’t have to pull out your phone and youis all the time if you don’t like to do that cuz some people are old school they don’t want to use them digitized things another beautiful hole I’m really

Glad that we chose to come here for day 23 of vlogmas 351 ft dead straight ahead with a gentle right to left slope One Big Cedar trunk and a second out there jockey a bit further to kind of shape that right hand backand if you’re really trying to throw a Hiser shot straight

Shots going to going to be king here as it is in the game in general thick wood line on the left to avoid looks pretty spiky and like you don’t want to be in there and yeah I do have a penny putter in my hand on a 351

Ft par three and I’m about to show you guys how long they can fly when you put some pop on them little bit of overturn there but I just wanted to make sure I gave it the turn to avoid that wood line and we got a circle one put Penny putter knows no

Bounds it does whatever you need it’s a distance driver it’s a putter both for in the basket and approaches versatile just like we all aim to be you this little crosswind picking up it can go ahead and go away this shallow cage is already enough of a challenge I’m

Looking I’m looking to ignore this wind dropping in them painted chains nice and firm and I don’t know I feel like the paint kind of dulls the reaction off the chains and helps grab the disc in maybe it’s just me but if you played out here at Woodway do you

Feel the same way have you played on these baskets whatever brand these are without the paint and how do they catch versus with the paint and just in case you forgot yes that was a penny putter on a 350t hole they can do it all

I’m gonna say it again and I’m gonna say it a million more times so get used to it one of the main reasons to love a course like Woodway is those views of the lake that you get throughout the property and you know seeing how well maintained it is and seeing the variety

Of shots so far here we have a 216 ft par three nestled into this Cedar Grove you can take the rightand Hiser you can take the left hand Hiser forand are available as well the straight shot is kind of the only thing not available so you got to

Pick how you’re going to play it I’m going to go back to the penny putter cuz if I’m going to talk about its versatility I got to show it should I go left side on an Annie no y’all just saw it Fly Annie so let’s show it on some Heiser touchy down the

Right oh my gosh you guys I thought I was counting out the ace chances thinking I’m sliding up for a Park Drive and it caught the roots that tree popped up about 4T in the air that one got my heart rate going where’s that monitor at

Man I really wish we had a catch cam to get a good slow-mo that popup and see how it really reacted hopefully we can zoom it in for you guys and get a good close look at it Penny putter Alpha plastic I missed this guy the other day

When I was playing with the ab lincol with the Santa hat and that’s not no knock on the Santa hat guy he was a good compliment to this one but I’m just I’ve shown this one for month month now so I’m used to it the other one I was still

Learning and I I really hope I have this one forever he just his little blushy face and everything so cute hole 5 is 320 ft or so dead straight shaped up by some more of these Cedar Trunks and here we have that parks department working hard they just felled a tree earlier

This morning and they’re cleaning it up so our gap’s a little bit tighter than normal and I you know I would say don’t do this at home but we’re trained professionals and we’re going to go art through the Gap trust that we’re not going to clip the truck at all right to

Left wind going to pull on the disc so I got to put a touch of turn out of the hand so it doesn’t just get beat up by that saw it off a little early but we got through no trucks were harmed and no people either

And we might still score a birdie out of it very strong wind gust here maybe it’s the Wrath of the wind since we didn’t wait on that truck to get moved before we threw it and said hey buddy don’t be messing with the parks department oh no I knew the wind would

Keep me up but I did not commit to the spin I needed let my wing get exposed a bit there and a wind this strong is going to take advantage of that every time so it’s good to learn a flat putt for conditions like today even if you’re really

Comfortable with your Pidgey Heiser or however you like to put it Annie it’s always good to be comfortable with this a dead straight spinner even if it’s just for a safe bid that you don’t feel great about making but sitting close for easy no stress tapping whole six is 207

Ft playing slightly up the hill with this big bush in the way as well as this cedar tree blocking the left side you got these telephone wires also clouding the airspace and a healthy wind today but good thing the bull snake eats wind for breakfast so I’m going to pop it flat

And it’s going to fade hard for yall pop up in oh my gosh did I just hit the cage did I make it run if we run there might be a better chance no disc in basket I had to have hit something there let’s see where it’s at

Man another moment we’re going to buy a haray monitor for next year’s vlogmas and it’ll be a fun little side stat to see we’ll have the Ticker on the side then we’ll sell High R monitors and you guys can wear them while you watch and we can see everyone’s stats who has the

Cold blooded nature and blue bonnet is a great choice putting back into the headwind I thought about busting out the bull snake just to kind of show you guys but then I remembered the putter that I’m currently using has so much Integrity that I never need to leave it no matter the situ

Ation hurricane or nothing some of our more keen eyed observers might have noticed by now that I’m yes wearing Nike freeze the Calvin heimberg ones we like to call them shoes that can literally fold over as you wear them you know we’re just trying to keep it relaxed today out here

At Woodway and keep it chill but we have our first big bomb shot so let’s see how they hold up to a 582 ft hole this is whole s’s long box we opted to play the long boxes on seven and 17 always trying to kind of play the more difficult

Course available to us I’m going to go Bravo warbird blast off over these trees here to the right use this Tailwind to stable me out keep me away from that out of bounds road yeah there’s that little bit of turn but trusting that the wind’s going

To lift it late and swing it back left that thing is way down there here with a pretty easy approach and we’re going to take take a bonus roller with the tumble weed for the sake of learning angles and because this hole is very fun and I like the shape of

It my gosh of course there’s a down limb right where I tried to land it’s all right it’s okay one meant to be I’m going to go bull snake mortar shot use that Tailwind I don’t like the low ceiling here on the approach and it sounds fun to try to spike one

Up well there’s that right to left didn’t quite account for but that V1 plastic grabbed the ground and luckily that disc is so stable it didn’t have enough time to really want to Glide it kind of was still trying to get down to the air down to the Earth whoops

Oh I was just about to say how my Putters are slowly turning green but fortunately they will not be on this putt brand new just catchers definitely have a much bigger catching surface than the other basket so very confidence inducing especially in this wind whole 8

335 ft playing down the hill out of- bounds Road long and really kind kind of three key trees in this middle to make you pick a line and one big tree canopy underneath by the basket to give you some shade when you’re putting in that Midsummer Sun I’m going to take the

Annie line it’s looking like a fun line to take for me Penny putter Alpha plastic I’m going to go to that power grip this one’s definitely on the longer side set the angle that I wanted and that thing is holding out so that’s such a

Fun and beautiful shot I just oh my gosh I love that you know everything about that flight just made me excited made me feel the cheer and the spirit of vlogmas ring through slid a bit long on this hard pack green with the down slope very happy with how that line flew though

Slightly up the hill and the basket is perched on a side slope kind of drops off to the right side of the green there I’m really wanting to go back to the penny Putter and just keep showcasing it’s beautiful flight there is a bit of headwind left

Or right coming so I got to take that into account and I’m going to take this wide left side a couple options here but it offers the most ceiling throughout and if I’m going to take a putter here I’m going to need some ceiling caught a little bit of

Shrubbed C2 headwind side slope doesn’t sound like too much of a problem for the blue bonnet it ain’t can confirm blue mons are good they’re really good tell you the truth so it’s blue numbers on your scorecard and they do that we star in the back nine with a 260t straight shot

Beautiful framing off the te and on the green there to make it aesthetically pleasing even though it’s objectively a simple hole Penny putter just got to understand that the Left Right wind is going to want to move me a little bit as I fly so adjust for

It there it is should be another birdie man if it was any windier today it’ have to be called windway not Woodway we’re a couple couple miles per hour shy of that so fortunately beautiful day temperatures are great this is December Disc Golf in Texas what are you waiting

For and that’s a blue bonnet that was waiting in the chains to be picked up after it scored yet another birdie it’s had quite a few this vlog so many that’s starting to change color now it’s getting sick of it h 11’s 221 ft and there’s really two main ways to

Go about it you’ve got the dead straight shot over here that’s going to allow you to play to the highest side of the basket where that that slope’s going to naturally pull you down to it or you can play this right side if you really don’t

Like the left side it’s going to be really hard to get it to stick up top and not have gravity pull it back down once you come in with that soft kind of check roll it’s just a penny putter show so no need to keep it or to stop it just got to

Look out for this missing part of the te box up here in the front left cuz that’s probably where you want to put your foot if you’re trying to optimize your Gap here play it straight let that Wind Drift it yeah textbook there’s some loud mysterious

Rumbling going off in the back it sounds like the biggest jet plane you’ve ever heard going and it just stopped we’ve heard it a couple times since we’ve been out here and I’d like to know what it is does anyone who lives in the area know

Before I have to go on Google later and look it up it sounds like the biggest jumbo jet you’ve ever heard in your life getting ready to take off are they manipulating the weather to create this wind to try to thwart day 23 of lmus we’re on to

Something at 164 ft whole 1 is short and sweet I’m going to bust out the armadillo cuz that’s another thing that’s short and sweet I’m debating whether I want to go straight at it with the forehand even though there’s kind of some broken limbs hanging in the way or take the safe left

Side Hiser I’m going to go straight at it the way this wind’s pulling take our chances oh I think I just hover crafted over everything we might have a putt with where this thing hit the ground and where it ended up I I really don’t know you guys lucky the Irish they

Say or is it that Texas plastic on a Texas course Hometown love you get it everywhere when you throw a lone star the trucks were just in the way of whole 12 so we went and played whole 13 but now now that we’re done with 13 12

Is open to us the parks department said they cut down five trees this last week and are working on some more right now we just saw one get pushed over in the background so whole 12 is back to open missing a big old Cedar that I’m guessing used to block pretty much all

This right side going to be some more variety available now I’m going to go V2 Penny putter I’m going to go stand still this one’s short enough I think I can just deliver without the legs or at least without the run up still using the legs

Not nice run but it’ll birdie and we’re going to run with it Penny putter variety of plastics pretty soon I’m probably going to have four pennies in my bag I’m going to need a fresh one here in a little bit once this Alpha One starts beating in I’ll

Need a fresh V2 at some point or maybe I’ll try one of those Santa Claus hat guys and keep this one in for just the flippy dippies 14’s only 205 ft and I think the biggest challenge is going to be the way this t- box leans it feels

Like when you step on it gravity gets turned up by two times so you’re going to have some extra slow feet here on this t- boox good thing you don’t need too much power to execute the shot and you got to pick a side left or right of

That dead straight tree trunk I’m going to go left on a little bit of turn Alpha Penny putter smooth as butter yeah I went to the right side I tricked y’all H good thing I got a p for birdie though suckers and this has to be the most

Leaning pole you seeing on the property yet I didn’t mean to call you guys suckers that was rude to me I just was excited cuz I shanked it and still had a birdie pot I think anybody would be excited for that so hopefully y’all can forgive me

Got to make sure on that leaning basket to adjust your aim Point by an inch or two because specificity matters in a game like this golf and when you’re losing a lot of the chains on this side you probably want to aim somewhere Center or even in that low left pocket

Either way just make it and get some more yellow stuff on your discs it’s a badge of honor tell you the truth whole 15 here at Woodway is 36 6 ft and it’s going to be the most muddled line we’ve seen yet not a lot of great options this right side is the

Biggest Gap but the way it slopes back to the basket it’s going to be hard to draw your disc back in and get the skip you need and it also kind of leads you right to the Doom of the water there’s a dead straight line if you can thread the

Needle and I’m going to jam on my Alpha Penny putter see how lucky we can get or if I can just pure it oh there’s that luck we oh there was luck then it was gone not an ideal drive but it’s a tough hole and I’m left with a Open putting situation

With one tree in the way fortunately the blue bonnet has a healthy enough fade I can choose to play it outright of this tree and swing it back as long as I can gauge it right I get the point heart R’s up here you guys we’ve

Got an unscathed round and this is a big putt keep it going never a doubt come on y’all I’m trying to get out of Woodway boogey free for my first play through and keep it that way maybe I can just come here and never bogey again in my whole life

That’s my goal whole 16 here 280 ft they trying to intimidate people with The Gap this tiny but guess what I’m never intimidated when I got the pp in my hand Penny putter dead straight at it ripping this thing never had more confidence in the world that I’m going to hit this Gap

Just a matter of slipping it underneath those low hanging branches sitting about 70 short of the basket we’re slipping it over and getting down buddy we might be fishing just kidding there’s quite a bit of room after the drop off I hit the Gap I promised you I

Would and I did that’s all I care about whether our birdie is going to be up to the putter got a couple meters between me in the lake so based off of that general rules I’m in bounds good I think the water level level is low right now blue bonnet coming back

Oh just needed a flatter release out of the hand y’all man we had quite the little stretch going there I don’t recall the last hole that we took apart on but this is going to be it I talked all that smack about hitting the Gap then I leaked my angle off on

The nose let it drift and we got to settle for a par but the way they bring that that low ceiling in in the flight here really makes it difficult I could see that one getting trimmed up about to about 8 10 ft to be optimized hole 17 from the long box it’s

Looking like about 575 ft or so you can play it out to the right towards the road ceiling isn’t too high you can play it to the left ceiling once again isn’t too high or you can play it down low where the ceiling is the shortest so

Regardless of where you’re trying to fly you’re going to have a low ceiling and because of that I’m going to go for a roller with a tumble weed to me a roller is one of the best options to deal with a low ceiling while gaining distance as

Long as you understand that you have a pretty large Fairway to use just got to avoid climbing that hill to the right which probably shouldn’t happen knowing that I’m going to be in the grass on the ground and avoid cutting out to the left which also should be a low

Percentage tumble weed up the gut and just hope to not hit some of these down sticks oh I needed more cut on that thing it needs to curl quickly I climb the hill you guys all right you guys looks like I got fortunate I don’t know we can argue

Semantics but the line of the road kind of gets washed out here if you’re going off the line of the road being inbounds or the line on the road being considered the road then that’s inbounds and if you’re trying to tell me the grass line is the inbounds line well I’d also argue

That there’s grass beyond my disc Edge so we’re going to call it in tell me if it’s not it’s in car decision we ruled it I’m going to take my little here we we’ll see we’ll try to get a realistic meter oh man we already pretty much there

Boom now it’s just a matter of what disc into the green I’m going to go D2 horny toad since I have this right to left crosswind and that slope little shy skips up masterfully and that’s how you play a birdie on whole 17 from the long box and bounce we called it so

Did dumble weed Tapp in one more hole to go here at the beautiful Woodway Park it’s been quite the treat and I hope to see new baskets and new teas in here one day cuz this place deserves to be a gym in the Waco Disc Golf Scene for a long time to come

Not just because it’s super challenging disc golf it doesn’t need to be that it’s just a great property to come hang out and play and it’s challenging enough that any level of player can enjoy it but still open enough to where it’s not just going to really rudely punish those newer

Players our final hole is 246 ft slightly uphill with that left to ro left to right side slope Road out of bounds up to the left going back to the penny putter incoming now do one final birdie for a solid round out here at Woodway I’ve said it a number of times

But this is a beautiful property I mean just look at the Lake Waco right here behind us you’re playing along this Hillside creating some different elevation changes and challenges on each hole and there’s some beautifully manicured mature trees out here this has been day 23 of vlogmas for team lar disc
