Hey everybody Welcome down to the channel and in today’s video we are going to be looking at the best driver and the best driver setup that you can use to maximize your distance so first of all let’s have a look at the driver and particularly the age of a driver now
I do Club reviews on my main Channel if you haven’t checked it out make sure you do and become a subscriber but something has become apparent over the last 10 years the distance that the driver are going is pretty much the same as it was a decade ago the biggest change is the
Speed and the Forgiveness that you get from across the face also with most mod drivers you have this now this is a shaft sleeve you can alter how the face sits but also the loft of the golf club and lastly you have movable weights in most of these modern driver heads what
I’m going to do is I’m going to talk you through how you can can alter these Lofts alter these weights to maximize distance out of your driver now as far as finding the best driver for your game and the longest driver out there on the market I’ve got
A couple of things to say pretty much all of the major brands now have a flagship driver which competes with every other manufacturer there is not a clear winner out there as far as distance is concerned the driver that I’ve had in my bag this year is the
Tailor made stealth 2 plus and I’ve got that driver in the bag because it is a monster but only because I can crank the Loft right down to 60Ā° the driver I’m using in today’s video this Paradigm from Callaway is also a brilliant driver and when in the right conditions can go
Just as far as the tailor made honestly any of the big Brands and some of the smaller Brands as well all make a fantastic product and they have done for the last 5 years now every manufacturer has a different setup of shaft sleeve you can see here for this Paradigm it’s
A 9Ā° head I have that set down minus 1Ā° so this is now an 8Ā° head and it’s also in a neutral setting and you can see there are multiple other options here so you can add Loft you can set it to a draw you can set it to neutral add one
Degre of Loft so all these are designed to really fine tune what you want to do with a driver and this is where the first slightly confusing fact about driver heads comes in so you may have understood that if you have a very low Loft that’s going to hit the ball
Further it all depends on what your swing speed is and what your launch angle is on the driver so we’re going to talk through that but then we’re also going to explain how you can get set up and maximize your launch conditions to get the biggest distance possible so for
This driver I’ve got it set down at 8Ā° now what I’m I’m going to do here is I’m going to move my swing at about 100 105 mil hour oh I’ve Struck it well I was just drifting off the left hand side 102 mil hour I’ll tell you that now datawise my
Efficiency there was 1.48 now that is very good that means that my strike was pretty much out the middle of the club attack angle was up 2.2 could get it maybe slightly higher but what we’re really looking for here in this particular example is back Back Spin now my back spin there was
2,80 reps per minute so that is how much the ball is spinning backwards as I hit now I’m going to swing the same driver in exactly the same settings at about 80 M hour 82 so 82 mil an hour and you can see that the back spin on that drive again
Very good efficiency with the strike was 1,300 and 53 now I’ve swung at a slower swing speed the ball has obviously gone less distance but it’s not carried as far as it should do because the Back Spin is very low okay so I’ve cranked The Loft up by
2Ā° and I’ve also put it in a slight draw setting baby so Coit speed there was at 81 mph so only 1 mph difference pretty much the same efficiency of strike but just look what’s happened to The Back Spin it’s gone to almost 2,000 revs per minute
1,999 and this time I’ve got 197 yards of carry so what I’ve done here is I’ve got more Loft I’ve created more backspin but I’ve also got more carry and overall distance that is because I’ve used the club head and I fitted it better to the
Swing that I’m using so please do not think that just cranking The Loft down is going to make you hit it further often we need to match spin launch and all these different factors into the swing that you have to get the maximum distance now have a look at these two
Drivers and notice the difference on the stealth plus here you can see that there is a weight directly behind the club face whereas the weight on the Paradigm here is more focused in the back of the club the reason for this is that the stealth has its center of gravity
Further forward in the club head rather than the Paradigm that is tried to push it as far back as possible this type of driver is generally going to be more forgiving this driver is going to be less forgiving that will create less backspin more often than not you are
Better Plumping for a more forgiving driver because it gives more ball speed on off center hits if you think about your driving and think about how often you actually stri strike the center of the face you’re going to get more out of a more forgiving driver but again it
Depends on how you strike it so hopefully that gives you a bit of a better idea about how you can adjust and set your driver I would always recommend if you are getting a new one to get custom fit but if you have a driver that
You’re happy with how can we get you set up to hit the ball as far as possible now I’ve done quite a few videos on driver distance and I’ll leave The Links at the end of this video but here is a really solid basis that you can use to
Power the drive forward we want the ball position more towards the front foot you can see here how it’s pretty much bang on the left heel that allows me to keep my Center behind the ball we want to be hitting up on a drive we don’t really
Want to be hitting down the reason for that is if we can hit up on a drive we can launch the ball up into the air and reduce the amount of backspin that we’ve spoken about cuz we want to be finding that nice little sweet Zone if we can
Launch the ball into the air with about 2,000 revs of Spin and launch it at about 15 to 17Ā° that’s going to have a fantastic amount of carry and it’s going to release on The Fairway when it lands so that wide setup Center behind the ball and I’m going to focus on moving
This club up through impact I’ve still got it set at 11Ā° let’s see if we can maximize launch and spin oh that is really good so it’s all about just maximizing that launch so if we’re kind of hitting it like this about 16Ā° launch angle keeping the backspin around
2,000 that’s just going to get the most possible distance that you can from the swing right guys hopefully you have enjoyed this video make sure that you continue your swing Quest and continue improving your driving by watching these videos here

Pete…wtf is up with the speed lately? Iron strikes look so great but man that grandad driver swing is heart breaking to see from Mr 350
Waited all video to see you Nuke one 350 at the endā¦gutted š
Great video Peter ā¤
Great content Pete. Merry Christmas!
Mr 350 is back !
Beautifully explained, Thank You Peter.
Brilliant video Pete. I now have a little idea of how the loft sleeve works
I need to get on a machine and get fitted for loft and shaft i think im leaving tonnes on the tee box .
Worth noting that callaway / ping drivers can adjust loft without opening or closing the clubface whereas you cranking down to 6 degrees is opening your clubface 4 degrees on a taylormade .
4 degrees open would not suit me even if it does also stick the toe up .
Bit of a minefield really .
I carry 10.5 and hit standard loft because and only because that setting suits my eye š¤·š»āāļø
You are a good teacher, but you donāt understand adjustable drivers. You cannot adjust loft, you are adjusting face angle, open or closed for effective loft. At setup, the driver must be off the ground in a square position to achieve the desired setting. Use a specification gauge, try different settingās, measure angle. Please read Tom Wishon on how adjustable drivers sleeves work. This information in its present form is not valid.
On the 'all drivers are generally good' – I recently tried a PXG 0311 Gen 5, standard model, and my 4yr old, forgiving, shorter shafted, Cobra blows it out of the water by many many yards (carry and total). I didn't think this was possible tbh but there it is.
Would love to hear someone like Pete acknowledge that at 11stone (and old) I have to swing out of my shoes in order to generate 85mph, whereas he just taps it.
Great video, making it easier to understand for us layman.
More confusion by incorrect information
When I was fitted for my driver, I was spinning it at over 3000rpm which I thought was too high. I was told it was fine. I still don't believe it!
I used to swing driver as hard as I could because I couldnāt hit as far as I used to and lost more balls than I care to admit, now I try and swing smooth around 100mph and the difference is unreal.
Let's not forget that the longest recorded drive in PGA competition was by Mike Austin at 64 years old. It was 1974 and he used a 43.5" steel shaft with a persimmon wood head and a balata ball to crush it 515 yards. So how much of an advantage does the newer technology really have?
Thank you for the great explanation
great
A very good explanation, Peter, Thank you.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New golfing Year. Keep up the great content.
Great video, Pete! When I finally got to a launch monitor years ago I found out 3,500 rpm was killing my drives. I was playing a 11.5Ā° head with a regular flex shaft, carrying around 220. Optimizing my spin and launch, my average carry with an 8.0Ā° head is over 50 yards better! It's important, guys and gals. Get to a launch monitor/simulator and get those numbers dialed in, and get those "real" average carry numbers written down with all clubs. You will not regret it!
I've been playing just over 6 months I have a 10.5deg Mizuno MP630 Fast Track I bought for Ā£30. At the Range on trackman I Carry about 215yrd and 235yrd total. launch is 15-17degrees and ball speed is around 130mph That only 5 yards or so longer than I hit my Taylormade Jet speed 3wood 17HL The numbers for that are pretty similar. I thought It might have been the older tech of the Mizuno but after buying a Jet speed Driver 10.5 it's about the same.
Ironically I bought the Jet Speed Driver and pondered whether to get the 13 degree or the 10.5 as I intended to crank more loft onto it as the Mizuno isn't adjustable.
I'm not looking for mega distance I would like to be able to hit 240-250 consistantly
Looks so easy, yet I seem to find I so difficult…. lesson needed me thinks! Great vid as always! Thanks
This exact thing has been on my mind recently because I picked up a PXG driver that I hit SO much better than my old Callaway Epic Flash, but I have lost about 15 yards off the tee (much more consistent though so I'm happy with it). I haven't really messed with the loft but I suspect I'm getting relatively high spin with the PXG and will experiment with the loft to see if I can get my distance back. I probably need to lower it from 10.5 to reduce spin.
You're the man Pete, favourite YouTube golfer. Very informative video
Very informative and great breakdown. Thanks Pete!
Got my Paradym TD set at 7. But also have toe heavy weight forward
My swing speed is around 95mph, ball speed of 140mph but my backspin is around 4,500 rpm so I only carry around 210 yds. I have tried everything with my club setup and lessons and canāt lower my backspin. I am getting fitted at club champion next week, hopefully that helps. All I asked for Christmas was Club Champion gift cards.
Callaway also has a strong adapter with allows you to drop the loft by 2
Can you test out moving the weight on the back from side to side?
