Hi everyone Luke here from weekend tour pros and you’re joining me again today in the studio at City golf in chiester now we haven’t done a ball review on the channel for a few weeks so I thought it’ be time to do another one of those and

The theme for the ball reviews over the next few weeks is going to be to take budget friendly golf balls we’re moving into the winter lots of us will be playing a more cheaper golf ball with maybe a little bit more durability over the winter particularly as we’re more

Susceptible to losing them or the conditions aren’t that great so what we’re going to start with today is the shrien soft field golf ball now this golf ball about 10 years ago was the first golf ball that I started to play consistently because of the price point

That it was at and it has got a bit of a cult following particularly around golfers that I see on golf clubs around where I live so really Keen today to get it onto trackman for the first time that I’ve ever done that and see if it can

Keep up with the number one balling golf the titless pro1 right let’s tell you a little bit about the construction of this golf ball and then we’ll do the standard test let’s get stuck In right before we start the test I just like to tell you a little bit of information about the construction of the shrix and soft field golf ball and the expected performance characteristics that shrix and say we should see when we do this test now what you’re about to

See on screen is the data from the shrix and soft Feld at the top and then what I’ve done is included the same data for the other golf balls in the shrien range so you can see how it Compares and how as you move up through the price points different characteristics change I’ve

Also included in the table the data from the Titus prov1 that we’re using for Baseline purposes today so you can see how those two golf balls differ as well so in terms of construction the soft field is a two-piece Iona construction golf ball that’s very very similar to

Most other budget friendly golf balls that are available on the market today you do normally find with a with an Iona cover golf ball you get a little bit more durability and a little bit more hard wearing cover but you do normally sacrifice a little bit of spin

Particularly with a short game and we’ll point that out in a second in terms of feel shrien promis us this will be a softer feeling golf ball and that is absolutely backed up in that compression rating of 60 it should be one of the softer feeling golf balls that we test

On the channel and we’ll look out for that again in the short game part of the test in terms of bull flight strickson promise a mid to high ball flight so we’ll look out for that in the seven IRS and the driver and they do promise US

Low long game Spin so again that’s something for us to keep an eye on with the driver part of the test in terms of that short game Spin they do say to expect a mid Spin and again that is expected because of the nature of the cover it’ll be really interesting to see

How much of a drop off there is in the short game part of the test and the pitching wedge part of the test between the prov1 and the soft field in terms of those spin rates final thing to call out is so many of you love the idea of

Playing a yellow golf ball so it’s great that the soft F comes in both white and yellow and at £2.99 it is one of the most budget friendly options available on the market today so hopefully it could be a great option for so many golfers watching down the lens right

Let’s head back to the studio and let’s start the test right let’s start with the 60° wedge with the soft field trying to hit like a 20 yard carry and just see where rolls out Too days like today as well while we love the normalized feature on trackman if you’ve watched my videos you’ve seen me in the summer in this studio in shorts and t-shirts when it’s absolutely baking outside today at the moment I think it’s going to take me a while to

Get the Gile off let alone the jumper that one’s a little bit better I can really honestly tell you this is so soft to feel really really is softly that is the name definitely hit that one a little bit harder and again it just feels so incredibly

Soft so if you’re someone who’s new to the channel and you haven’t watched any of my previous Ball Reviews before and you’re wondering why am I comparing what is effectively a budget golf ball next to the Titus provie one well the reason for that is it is the the number one

Balling golf it is the ultimate Choice premium Choice out of all the tightest golf balls in that part of the price point it’s the one that works best for me it’s also the best of the premium balls that I’ve probably used and actually had a go at gaming when I’ve

Been given some of them and I always think the numbers are so consistent every time I film it always gives me good numbers and I think as a result because I always use it to compare against if you watch my videos that I film on different days you at least get

An interesting kind of comparison between how that prov1 performed against my swing on the day versus the ball that we’re testing so that’s the reason we always use it for baselining purposes of course we’re going to see there’s some things that the prov1 can do that this

Sort of more budget friendly ball that we’re testing today can’t but there’ll also be some other things where the budget friendly ball offers us something and we need to make sure we call that out as well in these data Sets right so we hit some shots with the 60° wedge trying to get that kind of 20 yard carry definitely can feel that the soft feel was incredibly soft incredibly d off the face really hard to even notice when the club and the board made contact that’s how soft it felt to me

But really Keen to now go home and see how the data compares to that Baseline numbers with those Prov ons so before we Deep dive into the data I always like to start this part of the video by reminding you that I am an 11 handicap

Golfer and as a result I am the biggest variable throughout this test and I do think that shows up the most in this short game shop mainly because of my inability to hit that partial shot consistently to that 20 yard distance so throughout the data sets I will try and

Call out where I think that my inconsistency is potentially playing an impact but hopefully we can still see some Trends and some patterns in the data that are worth calling out as we move through the video so starting on the left hand side you can see that my

Club head speed with the prov1 was a fraction higher than the soft field but interestingly the ball speeds were very very similar and what you can ultimately see is the smash factor of 0.95 is a little bit higher with the the soft field than the prov1 now it is worth

Calling out that whenever I test the more budget friendly golf balls I do tend to notice they come off the face quite hot with these short game shots and that is backed up in this data set as well now I’m not saying one of those is better or worse it’s just an

Observation and something that’s worth calling out now in terms of the spin profiles on this type of shot it’s no surprise to see that the soft field had less spin but at 850 to 900 revs less that 3738 spin is substantially lower than the Prov one at 4682 so you defin

Defitely are giving up a little bit of spin on the short game shots in terms of the ball flights though these are also very very different the soft feel of that launch angle of 38.7 Peak height of 12 ft and that land angle of 42.2 is delivering a slightly loopier ball

Flight than the provie one that’s kind of got that more driven flatter ball flight with that lower launch angle lower Peak height and lower land Angle now the interesting thing is when you put that spin Ray and that ballf flight together the total package of stopping power is actually very very similar

These two golf balls that’s the difference between the carry and the total it was 4.2 yards with the prov1 so it was stopping a little bit quicker than the 4.5 yards we saw with the soft field now what I would say is that out on the golf course three of a yard is

Actually only one foot you just really wouldn’t notice that difference between these two golf balls on this type of shot the one thing we can say though is how they’re achieving that is very very different the provy one is doing it the more driven maybe tall preferred ball

Flight and a little bit more spin to grab and check versus the soft fils delivering it more through the ball flight characteristics of that slightly loopier flight and that slightly less spin one thing I also like to show you is I always like to show you my dispersion graphs when I do the

Dispersion graphs one thing I would always call out is I take out any shots that would massively skew the data left and right because I hit a really bad shot even though those were in the data sets that you’ve just seen but what you can see here is there’s nothing un that

Worries me about these two data sets let’s see how the numbers continue as we move up to the pitching wedge right moving up to the pitching wedge the first of the three full shots that we’re going to hit today kind of data points that I’m going to be interested in is

Always interested in the sort of speeds and seeing what ball speed we get out of the strike but really interesting to see what kind of carry numbers we get interested to see the ball flight that we get the spin rates and ultimately the stopping power because that’s

Particularly of Interest with us with a wedge is how quickly can we get to stop on the green always worth noting that trackman does play firm and fast the results you get out on the golf course are probably a little bit better than what you’d see on trackman but we can

Compare the two data sets side by side just to see how they differ right let’s start with the soft f Line ball look how straight that is that’s as good as I can hit it ball speed’s jumped up smash has jumped up look at that longest one to finish 109.3 right first one with the Prov one for baselining purposes only here definitely louder definitely more Clippy okay so done hitting the pitching wedges with the stricks and soft feel compared to that prov1 first impressions in the bay is it did still feel soft maybe not as soft as I was expecting it to but definitely is still a soft feeling golf ball my one thought in the

Bay is it definitely wasn’t as long and definitely felt like the ball speeds weren’t as high as I was getting out the prov1 but let’s go home and let’s look at the data side by side and see what it’s showing us right let’s Deep dive into the data from those pitching wedges

Now starting on the left hand side you can see that my club head speed was a fraction faster with the prov1 and we did get a little bit more ball speed out of it and a little bit of a higher smash factor that smash Factor could be just

Due to the prov1 being a marginally faster ball in this part of the test or it could be down to my quality of strike being a little bit better with that batch of shots so please do bear that in mind when we talk through the rest of

The data for these pitching wedges now one thing that did really really impress me about the shrick and soft feel in this part of the test was that spin rate at 7031 it was only 300 revs behind the prov1 at 7318 I can absolutely assure

You I test lots of golf balls on this channel and there are a lot more expensive golf balls that can’t keep up with the prov1 in this part of the test as well as the shrick and soft field has so that’s a massive tick in favor of the

Soft field now in terms of the ball flights here this is where they’ve actually spped switched around from that 60° wed shot that we hit just shortly before four this time the shrick and soft field is delivering that lower more driven ballf flight and the Proby one’s delivering at slightly higher ballf

Flight the launch anger of 24.7 is 1.2 de less the peak height of 63 ft is actually about 10% less than the 70 ft with the prov1 and that land angle of 44.7 is 2.4 de less now what that means is the combination of a slightly

Stronger ball fly and a bit more spin from the prov1 does mean we are going to get it to stop a little bit quicker on the green as you can see the stopping distance on average with the prov1 was 4.9 yards versus 6.3 yards with the

Shrick and soft field that’s about a 20% difference now I’m not saying that that’s a massive difference or it’s not a massive difference it’s ultimately for you to determine how much of a difference that is for you and whether that is inconsequential or if it really does make a difference with a scoring

Club like a pitching wedge the one thing I would call out at this point in the video though is trackman does always play firm and fast and the amount of roll out that I typically see on the golf course is never as much as I normally see in the trackman but we can

Compare these two data sets and say that it probably would be the case that the Prov one would still stop that sort of fraction quicker than the soft field in terms of the carry number here there is about 3.2 yards of difference between these two golf balls I think if the ball

Speeds were the same we’d probably bring that into maybe a yard or two and it would be a little bit closer but I think this the Prov one is a little bit longer in this part of the test terms of the dispersion circles nothing that absolutely concerns me here again we are

Using the medium batch of shots for the dispersion circles but nothing that concerns me whatsoever let’s see how it continues as we move up to the 79 right moving up to the 79 now starting with the soft feel again looking out for similar numbers to the pitching wedge

Here Keen to see bull speed distances what we get in terms of spin stopping power for me as well as someone who’s quite a low flighting player I’m always looking to see if we get a little bit of good height on the golf ball as well oh that’s a little bit better

Really felt nice off the strike yeah look at that that felt great what’s that numbers Oh my days it just feels awesome off the face when you hit it that felt great oh my we’ve hit a little baby drawer oh my God I think I’ve just shut the face on that one

Slightly no dead dead dead neutral wow great one to finish on with the soft field really really enjoyed hitting that batch of shots so just done hitting seven irons if I’m honest I didn’t hit the batch of shots with the prov1 as good as i’ would like to for baselining purposes but I

Think we’ve got some data there interesting feelings in The Bays with the soft feel if I did absolutely catch it pure because of that lower spin it definitely felt like it was really getting compressed and going out some distance but probably not stopping this quickly but again let’s go home and look

At the data side by side and see what the data is actually showing us now I must admit when I got home and took a look at the data from this batch of 7ins I was really really impressed with the shrick and soft feel let me show you why

Starting on the left hand side you can see that my club head speed this time was virtually identical with both of these golf balls but there was a fraction more ball speed this time with the soft Feld again that might be down to a slightly better strike or it could

Be this golf ball is a fraction faster in this part of the test but let’s see how it continues as we look through the rest of the data now it isn’t a surprise to me once again to see that the spin rate was slightly lower with the soft f

It is an interesting observation that the difference between the two spin rates is higher here than we saw with the pitching wedge and that maybe is the only little kind of asteris I would put against this set of data I am generally a low spin player as it is I can’t give

Up too much spin with my eyes I’m always looking for a little bit more so to see it drop off about 6 to 700 revs is a little bit of a concern but like I say there’ll be other golfers watching this who have too much Spin and this would be

A massive Plus for them in terms of ball flights here you can see this is the first time that both ball flights are really really similar that launch angle only has point4 of a degree of difference the peak height only has 2 ft of difference and the land angle only

Has 1.7 de of difference now if you were to given me both those two data sets the bits that we’ve got circled at the moment and ask me to pick out which golf ball is which it would be a 50/50 guess for me and that absolutely is Testament

To how the shrick and soft field has performed with the 79 now what does that all mean in terms of distance and stopping power well we can see exactly like I felt in the bay that the shrick and soffi is about half a club longer in

This part of the bag than the Titus prov1 with that 52.2 yards versus 147.7mm we saw in the pitching wedge about 20% more roll out with the shrick and soft field again I have to say that is worse but it’s for you to determine if that’s inconsequential enough or

Again for the value for money if it’s something you’d be able to live with and accept again particularly in the winter when maybe it’s not rolling out as much on the golf course that would be a lot less and you probably wouldn’t even notice it in terms of the dispersion

Circles once again nothing that concerns me too much there is that one that was out to the right with the soft field if I also took that one out of the data set when I was coming up with the median data set it would have made the batch of

Shots with the soft field look incredibly tight but as a handicap golfer as a medium set of shots I would absolutely take both those dispersion circles let’s finish up with the Driver that’s really good really really good some actually really good numbers there probably took me a couple of shots to warm up into the ball but actually some really really good numbers there and I did hit you know a couple towards the end that were just under that 210 carry

Which is always kind of that Holy Grail for me getting that ball speed into the 130 so yeah really good Numbers must have shut that down now that is interesting because first one out with the Prov one I’ve hit it really well but the ball speed has jumped up a good few M an hour against the stricken straight away can’t deny that the provy one is delivering more ball speed just just

Absolutely can’t deny that right just finished hitting drivers and this might just be where the soft field starts to fall off a little bit because in the bay it was definitely noticeable that the ball speeds on equivalent hits was definitely sort of 3 four maybe even 5 mph less and my carry

Number was down I was really struggling to get carry over about 205 yards with the driver versus the Baseline set with the prov1 where it was very rare that it was under 210 but what we need to do is go home now look at the data side by

Side and see if the fields I’ve had in the bay are backed up by that data now I’m really pleased to say that after taking a look at the data my feelings in the bay on the shrick and soft field it’s not as bad as I first thought and

Let me just show you why starting on the left hand side you can see that my club head speed with the titless prov1 was about 1.2 mph faster on average and there was about 2.3 mph of bull speed difference and that will equate to about 2 to three yards of carry distance maybe

Even four yards of carry distance but you can see the smash factors are absolutely identical so both these golf balls are similar speed golf balls in my hands with the driver in terms of the spin rate just take a look how close they are 2913 with the prov1 2914 with

The shcks and soft field now again if all things were equal in terms of that ball speed we might have seen a little bit more spin with the soft field but just on the numbers that I’ve got in front of me just look how close they are

And it’s showing me that the soft field is keeping up with the prov1 in this part of the test in terms of the ball flights here we did see once again a slightly lower ball flight with the soft field slightly lower launch angle slightly lower Peak High and a slightly

Lower land angle but what you’re going to see in a minute is that lower ball flight has actually allowed it to catch up a little bit with the prov1 in terms of total distance versus is that slightly higher ball flight that we got from the prov1 if I just circle those numbers now

What you can see here is the prov1 was what 6.7 yards longer through the air again that probably would have been maybe two or three yards only if we had equivalent ball speeds and in terms of total distance because of that lower ball flight that yardage difference was

Only got down to about 6.1 yards and the prov1 wasn’t as rolling out as much with the driver as it was with the soft field because of that lower ball flight so overall we’re talking about six yards of difference once we got those bull speeds all things equal maybe two or three

Yards longer the Prov one again it’s for you to determine how much that’s worth to you for the price point but I think we can say the shrien has done a really good job throughout the test of keeping up with a prov1 and as you can see from

The data here I did hit both the batches of shots with the driver really well there was a few more that I could keep in with the median data set with the prov1 than the soft field but again overall nothing too concerning between the two numbers so that brings me nicely

On to my concluding thoughts on the shrick and soft field golf ball the first thing I want to call out is it soft field by name and it definitely was soft field by nature in my hands I definitely noticed how soft it felt in that short game part of the test it was

Also noticeable from that kind of duller sound that I’m used to associating with softer feeling golf balls in terms of its performance I was really impressed with it throughout the whole of this test yes it can’t deliver exactly the same numbers as a prov1 and that wasn’t

To be expected but I was impressed with how much it kept up with the prov1 particularly in that seven iron part of the test those mid irons it definitely performed really really strongly there and the spin rate with the driver in particular really did impress me how

Consistent it was and how it kept up with that pro1 now that leads me nicely on to what type of golfer should game the shcks and soft field and I think there’s three types of golfer who might want to give this golf ball a go first of all if you’re a higher handicap

Golfer or someone who’s new to golf and you’re worried about how much you’re going to lose your golf balls and therefore don’t want to spend too much money on them the shrick and soft feel at the price point it’s that could be an absolutely fantastic option for you the

Second type of gol for who might want to consider this is the the golfer who plays a different golf ball every single time they play golf or every time they lose a golf ball they pick a different one out their bag I really do Advocate the golfers try and play the same golf

Ball time after time so you can get used to how it performs on the golf course get used to what it’s going to do and start to kind of react accordingly to that if you don’t currently play the same golf ball every time this was the first golf ball I played consistently

And I definitely would recommend it as a great starting point to see how you get on playing the same golf ball Time After Time third and finally the type of golfer that might want to use this golf ball is Anyone who normally plays a premium golf ball throughout the summer

Months who’s looking for a budget friendly durable option during the winter normally the greens are a little bit slower the ball doesn’t need as much Spin and you do want the extra durability in the winter conditions and it could make an absolutely fantastic option for that type of golfer as well

  1. Definitely looking forward to the more friendly price tag ball. Hope you do the mizuno rb566 I've had great success with that and the Callaway super soft. 👍

  2. Good stuff here… I Just did a similar test in my sim with 7 different golf balls. Driver results were
    1.Callaway ERC Soft —————279 carry –160.3 BS—1762 Spin
    2. Titleist ProV1x ——————-278 Carry—158.7 BS— 2184 Spin
    3.Titlest AVX—————————274.8 Carry–158.9 BS—-2138 Spin
    4.Uneekor Bridgestone Ball—-273.8 Carry—157.2 BS—-2108 Spin
    5. Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide—-273.3 Carry—157.9 BS—2222 Spin
    6.Srixon XV—————————–269.6 Carry—-156.9 BS—–2202 Spin
    7.Srixon Soft Feel——————–269.1 Carry—157.9 BS—–1967 Spin

The ERC Soft really surprised me how long it is and the XV how short…I love the AXV personally, it gives the soft feel and the higher spin on wedge shots around the green. Best of both worlds IMO and can be had on EBAY for decent price in the 4A/5A mint condition auctions. $55 for a dozen balls is absurd no matter how good a ball may be, it's just robbery.

  3. I played the Soft Feel for many years and then switched to the Z Star. I actually found that the Z Star felt soft to me and went farther. I know there is supposed to be a big difference between them but I could not find it. But…I am an older. slow swinger and do not see that much difference between balls anymore.

  4. Great review and Happy Holidays, Luke! Funny, because I played the front nine with a Soft Feel and the back with a ProV1 just today!

Your pitching wedge results are interesting. Normally a lower compression ball will have a slightly faster ball speed than a tour ball with irons, regardless of speed, and combined with its lower spin, you'll get (slightly) longer carries with all the irons, including pitching wedge. It switches with driver, of course – a firmer ball is always faster.

But TXG also had some interesting numbers with the Soft Feel. They found the wedge and partial shot spin very low, as expected. But then the 7-iron spin jumped WAY up. And driver spin was quite low. It had a flatter flight and ran out a lot, as you saw in your driver results. So maybe it's a bit of an odd ball.

I prefer a slightly softer ball, and for me, at around 82 mph 7-iron, the sweet spot for compression is a ball like the ERC Soft. It's soft enough to feel good off all clubs and get good numbers and a little more distance with the irons, but firm enough that I'm not losing any ball speed with driver – or not enough to make any difference at my speed (high 90s driver swing speed). I also like the ERC Soft because it's just firm enough to get some feedback on where strike was on the club face. So I look forward to your thoughts on that ball.
