College football where we can feel some disappointment maybe your team didn’t make a bowl game maybe your team lost a bunch of guys to the portal maybe your team thought they were in on a key guy or two in the portal or a key recruit uh on early signing day maybe a key

Assistant coordinator or head coach left there is just like in real life there’s always going to be some sadness that comes along with the holidays and so we thought that even if your team is going through it or even went through it all year long we’re going to find that konel

That nugget of Sunshine Lollipops puppy dogs butterflies you name it Ty uh as it has to do with the 2023 season and Beyond right we put a call out on social media I’ve got a list here of my own gifts from this college football

Season I’ve got 15 of them so we may not get through all of mine we may not get through all of yours but we’re going to do our best to get through all of the verb so Define gifts so like this is what the college football Gods gifted

Be Conor Stallions in Michigan correct yeah it’s the Michigan sign stealing controversy I have said this so many times now on this show talking amongst friends social media wherever wherever it doesn’t matter I’ve been at least consistent on this point this is the most ridiculous story I’ve ever seen in the college football

World we’ve been doing this show now since August of 2008 it’s a long time we’re getting older more gray now in the picture than there was back in the day I cannot remember just in the in the lifespan of this show any story that is within a country mile of this one

Because it combines all the things that make us both love and hate college football because right at the core you’ve got this insatiable desire for Perfection which in and of itself tends to lead to funny things as you know people go to Great Lengths to try and

Achieve Perfection and all too often it ends up being really silly when you hear about it in hindsight but yeah in this case it turns into a conspiracy theory both from Michigan fans and from Ohio State fans and then they sort of turned the guns on each other and had

Conspiracy sees about the opposing fan bases it put the powers that be the people in charge of college football who don’t really want to be in charge of anything it put all of them in a box and made them very uncomfortable you had a lot of Talking Heads talking themselves

Into Corners you had social media melting down and oh by the way it should not be overlooked that this story very much involved the two biggest rivals in the sport it was the perfect story it really was a gift look we have a allegedly failed vacuum salesman at the

Center of it we have coaches getting fired we have allegations involving New Hampshire Private Eyes related to or investigative firms related to Ryan day we had a maybe unrelated maybe related offense of coordinator being fired at the end of last year for quote computer access crimes we have Michigan season

Bookended by a Jim Harbaugh suspension on either side I mean regular season he was back for the Big 10 championship game it it goes so deep in so many different directions and however this end and not to mention Conor stallions allegedly being on the central Michigan sideline I believe the chipa investigation is

Ongoing as to who that was and how they got that sideline pass we don’t know who he was yet it’s probably him we we had the Assumption in our brains that oh he Conor stallion after he resigned is probably going to lay low by the way 500

Page Plus Manifesto on Google Docs per I think it was Richard Johnson or Pal Richard at SI reported that and then he just like started showing up at Ann Arbor bars and maybe the bar stool live campus show he went up on stage and gave

Dave P note of some kind yeah so however this ends with Michigan being completely exonerated we’re still going to probably get more details about how odd the Connor stallion situation is and was and if they’re not exonerated and there are big NCAA punishments we’re also going to get further details of an

Operation it unless you’re a Michigan fan unless you’re an active user on MCO blog which I think Conor stallion was about a decade ago story is perfect story is absolutely perfect it’s a gift it you’re right it is it is the gift that has continued to give and I think

What makes it even more interesting now in retrospect is the fact that is the number one seed in the playoffs yeah we have really been on Polar Opposites of the story um you know I’m not saying you and I I’m just saying as a fan Collective fan base here of college

Football we have seen the lows of Michigan’s going to get the book thrown at them in season be suspended be forced to Forfeit the rest of the year yeah and now we have seen the highs where they beat Ohio State for third straight year they are the number one seed going into

The playoff we will preview that game next week but suffice to say it has really been a roller coaster if you are a Michigan fan if you’re an Ohio State fan certainly just if you’re a fan of college football that cares about these stories yeah um it I we could not have

Foreseen this this would never have been on the bingo card even the weird ones we make to try and get engagement hashtag out on the social media platforms we could never have envisioned something as goofy as this so I treat Connor stallions I treat the Michigan sign stealing controversy

I treat this whole ball of wax as the biggest gift under the tree this holiday season I agree um I think kind of close SEC though was the end of Jimbo Fisher yeah I mean you talk about a parting gift to the season Jimbo Fisher with the game Show’s most

Lucrative exit gift um yeah is that a do you treat why do you treat that as a gift because a gift implies that it is a good thing and sure you could argue that little old Jimbo just doing his job um was was R run out

Of Dodge did his best brought talent to College Station a lot of that talent’s now leaving because he is gone and there’s maybe some lack of clarity for where the program goes next right is it a good thing that this guy got fired I think for A&M fans they certainly view

It as a good thing I think for Jimbo Fisher’s business affairs people uh they probably see it as a good thing his money management people his agent whatever A lot of people are coming out on top this is kind of win-win short of Jimbo Fischer’s ego as a winning college

Football coach and Texas A&M certainly finds itself in a down position right now as they’re getting their roster sort of plundered uh that especially that 2021 signing class but I think there’s still going to be a lot of excitement around Mike Elco in the future and I think agies collectively view Jimbo

Fisher late stage Jimbo Fisher as a problem that needs to go away uh after some of the results and some of that’s injury some of that is Antiquated thinking and bad hires whatever but the idea that somebody is going to make that much money to not work is an inspiration

For all of us the American dream heading into the new year so that’s the positive spin I’m taking from this because man again I’ll I’ll Circle back to the phrase parting gift if if you are going to take a job that that that is that high profile right

You’re on magazine covers your contract your recruiting classes are the talk of the sport and you fail just considering what the expectations are given the money given the talent level and you clearly fail to to get to the level expected of you and you get dozens upon dozens of millions

Of dollars to go away I don’t know I think that’s pretty good good it’s the American dream good for American dream good for him yeah I guess he can’t feel that bad he’s getting $76 million to do nothing also the the idea that Florida State fans again fans are always right not

Individually but if there is a collective inunison fan base that says this is what we experience with this person positive or negative generally speaking trust fans I I Florida State fans were like good luck guys uh this is not 2013 this not 2014 it’s not 2012 good luck there’s a lot to be

Uh wary of and Texas A&M fans said we’ll see and they saw I am grateful this holiday season I won’t keep playing this I promise okay I like it the Tyler and Spartanburg story was a true Joy call I forgot about that yeah that was a true joy for me

Personally I talked about conspiracy theories earlier I still 92% believe that Tyler and sparenberg was some sort of plant you think so to get on the radio somehow with the coach to be on that long to be allowed to rant that long while on with

The coach that is just not a thing that happens who do you think planted him I’m not sure I’m not sure he was necessarily a plant okay I think there was definitely some foul play involved whether either with the producer who was running board that day right it was the

Producer’s last show and he just said f it leave him on or with the phone screener who maybe caught a a whiff of something a foul there but I think more than anything what came across to me through that little Endeavor MH rarely if ever are hecklers on a

Coach’s show allowed to go that long on the air right without getting kicked off okay every now and again somebody’s going to slip through the cracks listen to politics radio you’ll hear it all the time happens all the time but these are softball style coaches shows these guys

Are wrapped in bubble wrap they don’t want them to be embarrassed because it’s you know it’s a community type thing everybody is rooting for the same side so whenever a Heckler comes on the fact that he was allowed to stay on that long to me is I think what is the fishiest

Part of this so it that’s why I say he’s a plant or somebody was a plant somebody wanted to hear what Tyler and sparenberg had to say um that story is one of those deals that really only happens in college football is there Video available do that is that filmed not

That I saw I hope so I hope somebody has that I’d love to see because that’d be interesting to watch to see if Dabo is like motioning no no let let him let him talk let him talk right that that to me was one of the gifts of college football

Season I don’t even think dabo’s response after you heard the whole thing initially there was like this outcry like how could dbo say this I don’t even think his response in retrospect was all that bad I think he was just defending himself I think he felt back into a

Corner obviously a lot of pressure on the season Dabo shortcomings at this point are well documented we don’t have to go into that here but it was just funny to me that he was put in that situation it wasn’t even so much a bad answer but I have definitely come around

To any situation in which dbo feels uncomfortable because that’s when you get the good stuff right that’s when you get the good sound bites that we can play on the show I love it it’s also it was a it was a nice Moment In Time a

Nice clipped moment in time as there has been mounting pressure on Dabo to update his ways and a lot of conversation around Dabo and losing it at Clemson and Clemson falling off from that Elite perch in college football but he seems to be so beloved internally in the and

Fan base and I’m I’m sure there’s a lot of reasonable criticism of him these past few years but it was criticism from one of his own and I don’t know if he’s particularly insulated from that criticism normally but the the emotion stirred up in him and the defensive

Nature which again a lot of was quite fair from Dabo I mean sure it was I don’t know if maybe fair is not the right word but relatable that if I were in that position I couldn’t tell you that handle that with more maturity and Grace and you know what yeah I here’s

The thing about coaches there’s a reason we don’t have coaches on this show the reason is they never say anything they all say the same thing they’re all so buttoned up and so vanilla nobody wants to give too much away nobody wants to be seen in any kind of negative light that

Nobody says anything right and so to see a CO or maybe we’re just bad at getting the juicy stuff Tai because I saw Jim Harbaugh talk about his love of EX Excel right that was a great that was pretty good that was a great I would interview

Him just just to talk about his Excel usage yeah yeah talk about vlookup yeah would love to but all none of these guys say anything all the interviews by and large are very vanilla very watered down very softball style things so it’s very rare that you get a coach kind of backed

Into a corner and a close cousin of this where I was going to go next is the Ryan Day Lou Holtz thing dude it’s Ryan de Lou Holtz it’s Matt cbell snapping at the fan right I think was it after the Ohio loss yeah coach has gone wild kind

Of this year the the the Ryan Day Lou Holtz thing okay we talk about Tyler and sparenberg three years ago yeah Dabo feeling defensive that is one version of this but Ryan Day and the Lou Holtz thing in the aftermath of an incredible goal line situation yeah getting in at

The gun to beat Notre Dame on the road and his first comments are to just dunk on Lou Holtz that to me was awesome that was that was what college football is all about we talked about it with Bruce Felman when we had him on the show a

Couple episodes ago if there was anything more telling of the pressure that Ryan day has been under than that I would hate to see it that only happens when you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders and then you have something of a release it’s also pretty

Great because Lou Holtz hasn’t been on television in8 years like Ryan day is captivated by Lou holtz’s obviously Lou Holt’s a major figure in the Notre Dame Community because of his time there but like that it’s not like he is responding to Reese Davis or Pat McAfee or Joel clatt or

Somebody who is like very much visible in 2023 it was this long retired coach who has long been off of any major Airwaves said this about our team and I am using this very specific moment to clap back I again it’s very relatable to me I would I would seek revenge verbally

And with great distance all the time if I were in that kind of position as an immature human so I thought it was great too great great great content just great content I I also liked uh as a gift to me uh Notre Dame Fielding 10 men on the

Biggest stage and moment of their young season on the goal line if that’s a gift to you then Oregon losing to their biggest rival or biggest conference rival let’s say this year Oregon regularly against Washington in other close games in other blowouts regularly and maybe even damn near 100% of the

Time fielded the allowed number of players on the field at any given time and they still lost Dan and they still lost they still lost so yeah Notre Dame came pretty close to making a goal line stand with 10 guys also this was just a

Gift from you to me because you’re so I I think we both pride ourselves on the ability to notice small things about the sport and you noticing that Marcus Freeman never actually speaks into his headset never I I constantly pay attention I I have caught a few moments

Where he has weighed in about something but the mic is either up near his ears or something like that or he’s just like overwhelmed by the moment he’s like how cool is this I’m on the sideline and does really engage in the way that you see other coaches engaging now he’s not

Calling the defense to my knowledge in the way that some head coaches are calling a side of the ball but I did take notice of that and I appreciate it yeah I mean if he talks into the microphone it’s always sort of in a gray

Space of is he really talking or is he just chewing on gum it’s never a prolonged sentence right it’s always if anything just a very quick quip of some sorts and so pay attention to that he also never Smiles he never for a guy who’s got this photogenic smile that you

See when he’s out in the town and when he’s out recruiting and when he’s talking to the team and that sort of never on the sidelines never on the side no not not not uh not using any of the allotted emotions as well um you have a new one

Well I want while we’re talking about Pack 12 stuff I wanted to give out oh okay uh give some shout outs here so Bradley who has helped with our newsletter and has written on our site for the last couple years now does a great job yeah awesome job love Bradley

He says a gift that we need to call out is the Michael penck story particularly the entire disagree The Arc no The Arc full disagree The Arc shut up Dan he goes from an exciting player an exciting prospect at Indiana the awful injuries to now being an absolute baller Pack 12

Champion Heisman finalist and who knows what happens in the play play offs yeah so processed at Tennessee right from Florida Jeremy puit decides not to sort of throw enthusiasm his way as a recruit even though he was committed goes to Indiana sticks with Indiana despite overtures elsewhere doesn’t work out at

Indiana Goes to Washington following kayin debor continue Tai no I mean just a great story we’ll see how it ends up for him but yeah I think the fact that he was able to come back from those injuries my God yeah Kim coming back to

Be um as said an absolute baller is is a cool story and I think one that a lot of folks are going to be rooting for in the playoff you remember the movie Billy Madison of course Adam Sandler has to complete a series of low-level challenges in graduating from Grade

School junior high high school college in order to uh inherit the his family fortune didn’t work out that way for Brian fence with the number of bars he had to clear and the number of challenges he had to hit being set at 25 points per game and coming nowhere near it which

Which aspect of the Iowa story is a gift though the the the setting of the preseason bar and it immediately becoming clear that that was far too ambitious for Iowa to meet now look losing their starting quarterback early on in the season is important context here and they did try to make changes

Through the portal picking up Eric all Kade mamera uh Shoring up offensive skill in a way that they desperately needed to but that they were winning and losing in games and setting comically low uh betting totals weekly yeah they were in a way uh I I appreciated how representative they were of the

Overwhelming majority of the Big 10 this season yeah that like you too can fail at half of this Sport and end up in the championship game like that’s the inspiration that’s the positive spin for Purdue or Minnesota or Wisconsin or Illinois or any of these teams Indiana

Um but yeah I I didn’t love sitting and watching Iowa play offensive football but the idea that there was such explicit such an explicit bar offensively being set for him to keep his job and it just immediately not happening it’s great how does something like that get

Out how does something like that get out I how does anything get out I worked in a corporate Communications Group before deciding to quit that and focus on this full time that never gets out Dan you never let that stuff get out because that stuff’s embarrassing it’s embarrass there are

Much finer points in coaching contracts that have nothing to do with potentially embarrassing the guy that never get out because that stuff is considered private the fact that this got out I mean I recognized that there was a lot of pressure on Iowa yeah after last season

To try and show some progress on offense because it was bad last year it’s been bad for a long time time but it was really bad last year yeah and so to have this out there in the public sphere it just created an absolute circus and then

There’s the whole other side of this for me personally which after the entire offseason of dunking on Brian frence of making fun of the guy then suddenly it felt to me like maybe this is a natural human response I don’t know I felt like

I hated on him so much that at least I maybe we collectively started feeling guilty and then rooting for Iowa to win in like the most Gastly way possible possible yeah no it kind of like went full circle so the the reason why it got out is either one somebody

Just didn’t like Kirk and Brian fence and the nepotism involved with the offensive failure that’s been involved and two Iowa needs to show important people money people that it is a serious I program and taking things seriously and if you just bring back Brian fence and

You know roll out this offense one more time in 2023 after 2022 without any sort of explanation as to why or what the expectation is for improvement then money dries up then you’re not necessarily I mean it’s the big 10 there’s always me money but you’re not seen as a serious program and

It can be used against you in recruiting not that what they do on the field isn’t plenty to use against Iowa on offensive recruiting um but I I think that’s the idea that you have to put out there that like you’re serious about higher aspirations than you were in 20122 than

What you showed in 2022 I have uh as a gift that moment in time back in week two or three whenever it was when we thought Tyler Buckner was going to be the starting quarterback for Alabama that was a gift that was a gift yeah okay I similarly have just most of

The USF Alabama game yeah so that that that was that was uh we just haven’t seen Alabama in that position in a long time it felt like about a thousand years ago when I jotted it down right but those really were uncertain times this season when it felt like Alabama was coming off

The swivel we were talking about it I mean it seemed on some level like much of the preseason discourse about Jayla milroe not being ready not being a great p or not being a this or a that certainly not having the experience it seemed like a lot of that stuff was

Coming true and I think for a moment in time it did feel true we weren’t wrong in that sense but what a lot of us overlooked was how they could make him better and how the coaching staff could find a way to work with his skill set to

Scheme around it to scheme with it and get Alabama to the promised land I mean we should know by now not to count Nick Sabin out in nearly any situation where he’s got his back to the wall he just he knows how to perform in those types of

Situations um but that moment in time the USF game I kind of feel like I was hit with a stun grenade watching that yeah it was truly and I talk about this too one of those deals where you look at the app you look at sports alerts whatever your

App is that you like to follow scores on and you keep refreshing it like what’s going on here is the thing stuck why why is this not moving and you watch the game it’s like holy cow what is going on here D agree it was it was an

Ugly moment it was an ugly watch uh Alabama pulled it out but the and I think Ty Simpson sort of improved over the course of the season but now having a potential competitor for the starting quarterback job at Alabama now go back to his old school to play lacrosse I

Mean it’s just a different version of Bama than we’re used to so it’s always nice to have somebody humanized that’s all I’m saying there there was a moment in time as well yeah where I want to say it was our SEC West preview episode that we did where we went into detail about

Some of our concerns around Jaylen milro which I still don’t think we’re off base he’s gotten a lot better yeah but at at that moment in time in July when we’re recording this who knew we had no idea right we’re just trying to project forward and some of the comments that we

Got in response to that around jayen milroe and his 44 Elite NFL wide receiver speed why would they they didn’t mean to bring Tyler bucker down there to be quarterback they just brought him down because he knows Tommy Reese’s system and like all these reasons that we had Alabama people

Commenting on our video for why they brought Tyler Buckner down certainly not to play quarterback I thought of all of those folks the moment that he stepped foot out on that field yeah was the Bama quarterback for only a minute in time rightfully so but easier simpler more

Tumultuous times if you were um rooting against Alabama things have obviously gone to a different place since they’re playing Michigan in the playoff in a couple weeks yeah speaking of which I have Northern Alabama gifting regular Alabama Jordan Travis injury because Alabama’s birth in this playoff is a

Gift an absolute gift from the gods that everything could align the way it did for the tide how about that I still think I still think this Florida State season is a huge gift to um Florida State fans obviously had a very Bitter End obviously did not shake

Out the way you would have hoped finished the regular season undefeated in a power five conference by pretty much every other measure that gets you into the playoff not this year for reasons that you we don’t have to relitigate here but the fact that Al the

The fact that Alabama got in I think is secondary to the fact that Florida state did get back to this Mountaintop and for anyone who’s followed far state for any period of time you know it’s been an incredible roller coaster ride from dunking on the offensive line to dunking

On previous coaches to looking at the talent level to being out recruited for the likes of Travis Hunter who went to an FCS program I mean it has really been a journey to get back to this day and age and um the fact that they did it the

Fact that they did it with Jordan Travis before he got hurt I think was sort of a gift to seminal fans out there because he has been obviously very loyal to the program and and representative of what I think Mike norell has tried to build there and the fact that they made it

Here maybe didn’t make it into the playoff but the fact that they made it here the fact that we’re having conversations like the one we just had with Brandon Hoffman about Mike norell has built a strong culture he has found a good way to balance High School recruiting with portal recruiting it

Seems like this is a program that is pointed up and to the right if you were looking at a graph and if you’re a Florida State fan it’s been a long time since you could feel confident in saying that so wish it would have worked out differently wish Jordan Travis would not

Have had that horrible injury but all things considered Florida State getting back to this point in its program um that’s a cool story that’s a gift how about like the the full circle or the the Journey of Jaden Daniels going from a highly touted recruit on the west

Coast that like people thought he was going to go to UCLA but didn’t seem I think the story was it didn’t really click with chip Kelly’s offensive staff like Oregon went in a different direction ends up at ASU in a pretty tumultuous Herm Edward situation he has teammates clowning on him when he

Announces he’s entering the portal and like saying they’re going to help him pack his locker and then going to LSU and just dominating the SEC dominating the SEC especially this year and even in a losing effort a game like the old Old Miss game like an all-time Old Miss and

A loss and a losing effort performance for Jaden Daniels coming away with the Heisman just a a pretty incredible story no for sure um you mentioned Chip Kelly I consider his rant from like a week ago on the state of college football one of those gifts it seems like chip may be on

The way out at UCLA they didn’t make the move this year my guess is that the clock is running and based on everything we’ve heard yeah know you can just read some of what the beat writers have to say it doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of love loss there between Chip

Kelly and UCLA certainly not if he’s going public talking about how players should share in the revenue my guess is there are a lot of folks that don’t want to hear a big time coach say that but I think speaking truth especially school with the financial problems that UCLA

The financial problems has no for sure so um him speaking truth to power in the way that he did very publicly with how college football in his view should be set up I thought that was one of those rare moments where a coach kind of breaks

Against Louisville but otherwise great year for Virginia Tech a bounceback year all of the snow games most notably probably farmageddon that was awesome that good game that game was awesome because at the time I forget what game you and I were doing the watch along for whatever

It was we looked at the TV I was like oh boy oh boy we got a snowball there was off in that game right this wasn’t a 73 game that was actual it was a rare snow shootout I love that all of Red River speaking of shootout what a weird game loved every

Second of it weird special teams plays breakdowns long drives to win like all of it was there with red river that was a terrific performance um how about a competitive highle Pack 12 in its final season man that was nice it’s obviously you know there’s the the sadness blanket

Wrapped around this but it’s very Bittersweet to me it was nice to have them go out on a high note if they’re going to go out it’s bittersweet to me and I’m an East Coast guy yeah I can only imagine what it feels like to be a

West Coast native like you and grow up with that and now see that it’s going to be going away that sucks that’s a huge bummer but I’m glad that it ended on a high note because um it was great football I mean the stories coming out

Of the Pack 12 were almost Second To None between the Oregon and Washington team one TEAM Arizona Utah winning with a super beat up team Stanford Colorado wazu UCLA all these teams at least showing that like there was a pretty decent bar of competence in the conference there there were reasons

To stay interested in the Pack 12 for sure yeah um I have here just Cody Sher we’ve had some super low moments of missou offensive football at the end of games for full four quarters you know the Larry round triera in the back field not his fault it was just a general

Offensive thing for mizou um to have Cody Sher break through like he did this year Kirby Moore is obviously a part of that Harrison mevas is a part of that as well um but yeah the missou story this year I think was was pretty enchanting on that same note how about just the

Existence of Ashton ginty oh man we’re just like out of nowhere a running back at a decent sized place but not a major major program absolutely explodes immediately upon starting his college football career I always appreciate that how about all of the games on the CW never envisioned saying that that’s a

That’s been a gift all season long never never envisioned saying that and I guess I don’t know if this is a gift but it maybe it’s a gift to those of us from the West Coast who didn’t go to USC but it almost seems like the second USC

Going to be decimated by injuries every year so they will be it seems unusually healthy but I I’ll give them an additional gift of it next year A Team like Utah who has been the sort of standard of consistency uh speaking of which how about just like boring

Competence for Texas A&M yeah like I’m just going to gift them the like drama-free boring competence like they’re not going to win the national championship next year but what if they exclusively lose to teams who are clearly better than them and exclusively beat teams based on Talent based on Smart coaching

That would be a really nice gift to give somebody in24 you would take that if you’re boring competence I would take that myself I’m still searching for it I mean that’s part of part of why people don’t like Alabama or don’t like Georgia it is not necessarily
