Alabama blueprint to do that they had to get the right people to come in and execute that Steve sarkeesian was huge what about Kyle flood oh a man that you know very well Bo Davis and then they come and get you to be that cherry

On top so let’s talk about first of all was like for you to rejoin Bo Davis and then two what implementing that blueprint has meant to the say of Texas ultimately um pretty much changing you know y’all probably hear coach Sark talk about all the time changing the culture

I mean and I’m I’m pretty sure he understood he got to see it up close in person with Coach Savin for years and he knew that’s what it takes to get over the top and so he’s really been grinding in on that as far as as everybody else

On the outside um but yeah it’s it’s been good man everybody’s bought in everybody as far as coaches as players they’re more bought in this year than last year um and I think uh the the proof is in the PD they’re seeing the hard work pays off and so um it’s been

Good for us it’s been good I work directly with you know Bo and so it’s been good just being picking his brain even though I play linebacker just getting a chance to make myself more valuable as a coach uh but it’s been good man it’s been good it’s been good

How many times he cussed you out oh n n we have a we we have a a pretty cool relationship you know same way you know when I was a player guys hold me accountable I hold them accountable it’s the same way you know I understand his

Mindset he understand my mindset and so we’re able to work well with each other because of that and so it’s been good yes I bring a different you know Outlook as far as because I play backer um I can help the dine out a lot better uh than

Than other situations and so it’s been good it’s been good I ask one more question and then we’ll pass it to Stephen M up to Marvin then Bo Steve and then Jazelle we’ll round it out we know about your P pedigree what you did at Alabama we definitely

Appreciate what you did to dinard Robinson in 2012 and at Michigan game because we’ll bring back bring that up later how have you placed your personal stamp on that defense for Texas um just understanding you know making sure all these guys understand no matter how good or bad things are going for you

There’s still always room for improvement and so I think those guys are especially this year are starting to hear that and understand it a lot more um guys are never they’re never satisfied you know we shoot to uh chase the goals that we set weekend week out

And when those GL Ona Cheo goes they uh they’re a little upset you know because not saying they’re trying to be perfectionist but they’re trying to live up to the standard and so that’s my my job outside of coaching is just make sure these guys understand you gotta

Always stay to the standard because if not you you’ll slip up and you’ll lose to Oklahoma and so it’s been good it’s been good but that’s that’s me just trying to give these guys an out Outlook a different Outlook uh from my point of view all the good or bad things I went

Through as a player uh the things I learned from teammates and other coaches um it’ll be pointless if I’m not able to pass those situations down so these guys can understand uh to make them a better football player or a better man however you want to put

It awesome Stephen Smith so Nico my thought to you is just being around Steve sarkeesian how have you seen him become even more appreciative of I got the chance to be a head coach again in a major power five program in a major brand after spending that time with

Coach sa and just looking at sar’s face how can how have you been able to tell man this man’s hungry but he’s so appreciative to have this moment again when it was once taken away from him you hit on it it was taken away from him and

He talks about it with the players all the time uh he knows an opportunity like being the head coach of Texas doesn’t come around often and so he’s even said himself you know I’m trying to maximize this opportunity as best as I can and so that’s him that’s him he knows he’s got

To be at his best he expects the players to be at his best so every day he holds everybody accountable we hold oursel accountable and so we’ve been working well together working well together all right awesome Marvin we know you got a lot to

Say why I gotta have a lot to say y’ all right listen man first and foremost I gotta say it man I couldn’t be more happy and proud of you and your success most people don’t know when I thought I wanted to coach college football I was

An intern at Alabama on the staff in 2009 so I actually got to meet Nico when he first came in so watching him grow and develop and team who he became not only as a player but as a man and what you’ve done beyond that man listen hats

Off to you because I’ve seen so many go through this process to only never be heard from again or to end up in some other situation they shouldn’t be in so despite the obstacles that life gave you you came out on the other side shining brother so don’t let anybody ever tell

You you didn’t do what you were supposed to do in life we all think that we’re supposed to play the game of football until we’re 80 years old which is physically impossible but sometimes you know things don’t go quite that way and it takes a very big man a proud man and

An understanding man to move beyond that game to take that next step into the real world so I’m proud of you now with that said Washington has a pretty high-powered offense and I know being a a former middle linebacker a lot of people understand when I make my

Predictions and I analyze games I do it from the same perspective I would when I played because as a middle linebacker you usually have less than a millisecond to make a decision about what needs to happen based upon what you’re seeing so when you look at this Washington offense

What do you think is going to be the most difficult thing to stop from that offense of course it’s a quarterback you know if we don’t affect him U because he’s a hell of a player if we don’t affect him it’s going to be a long day

For us we’re we’re not fools we know that um and so going into that game we gota we got to be at our best they’re a damn good football team and we know that and so um he’s the guy I mean if you don’t affect him I mean it’s going to be

A long day on the yard for you Bo you haven’t been here in a minute glad to have you back sir what you got for Nico sorry I’ve been busy with the usfl but yes sir I I remember Nico when I was getting recruited um coming in um I

Haven’t picked Alabama yet I was just being recruited by and I remember seeing him and Dante and all those guys and I’m like damn to Au I gota play against D guys I go oh man I got I gotta go get D you know what I’m saying and like I’m at

The game man I’m seeing on warm up and it’s like cl cl so you know during the game they show enough just hitting you know what I mean you know know like you only hear Nico and Dante High you know I’m saying name over the intercom and you know

Running backs we pay atten to linebackers who gonna be the linebacker at the team we go to but I’m at Bal every week seeing this day in and day out practice seeing how he practice full speed I said no wonder he hit like that

In the game you know what I mean so you know man my hats out to you you know for practicing you know for bringing what you brought to Alabama that still lead down to what we try to tell the young kids today how you how you practice is

Is it’s gonna have you on it’s gonna have you play if you practice hard the game gonna be easy which if you bought into it Nico he know it would it looked easy to him because I saw him at practice but my question is to you is what what what what’s the difference

On the being on the other side um the thing I catch myself struggling with um as a coach I mean yeah we can get out there and try to show these guys how to do it um but that’s not who we are anymore and so I struggle with trying to get these guys

To understand or trying to get the guys to have that mindset that we had uh back in the day when we was playing some guys are are built like that some guys are not so my job is try to find that fine line to where I can connect

With that player to get to get him to play at a high level um but that’s that’s been a deal man it’s just it’s it’s been cool um when I got in kind of what Marvin was talking about earlier it was exciting because as a

Player we only know so much but as a coach you see it from a different different lens so I kind of got excited about that because it’s a different uh different look or different sight on the game that I grew up loving all these years and so um yeah man so that that’s

Really about it man just uh it’s a lot that comes with it a lot of responsibility you know it’s not just uh you you know how coach Sav was never get too high never get too low that’s true now especially as a coach right the players see you rattle they’re gonna be

Rattle when they don’t see you Rattle and cool and calm in high pressure situations they gonna be cool and calm and so it’s a l it’s weird man it’s a lot of things coach saving used to preach to us all the time that I catch myself saying and reverting back to uh

Now that I’m a coach and a lot of things that uh I didn’t understand as a player when saving and Kirby all these guys was preaching to us now that I’m on the other side I get it fully and so uh it’s been it’s been cool man to tap back into

All the knowledge that I gain from you know coaches and other teammates um but at the same time uh it’s been been exciting at the same time because I get to develop guys get to build relationships and and see them grow and like I said man that that’s a

Satisfaction in this coaching thing you know when you see guys work their butt off and get to that next stage and be successful hey by you saying um by you mentioning that relationship with him uh have it ever been a time where you had to pull a player to the side or even

Maybe the the linebackers and tell them a story of your own that made them like like damn he went through that and I’m complaining about this have you ever have you ever had that type of situation go on where you had to um my first two years in ‘ 09 the only

Reason I started playing is because Dante tours ACL I was strictly on special teams and so after that year I mean I had a good year my freshman year after that year I’m thinking I’m still up Nick wasn’t having that because he knew I was young he knew I was immature

He knew I really wasn’t ready and I wasn’t working how I was working my junior year and such and so I just tell these guys that story a lot when guys are struggling with younger guys especially why am I not getting more playing time or why they why it looks

Like they’re throwing me to the side and such and so I just talked to him about you know how coach put me in a situation where I had to work my butt off I had to earn it everything you know us coming out of high school five star this five

Star that we think it’s supposed to be given and that’s that was my mindset I was young and immature and it took me a year to realize man I got to grind for this everybody else around here been working their butts off for two or three

Years who do I think I am just going to come in and show up and just have this role and so uh I kind of break down a lot of different things uh to these guys a lot of different stories um especially now you know what I mean now is very

Important because I mean just being blunt I mean it’s unch started waters for a lot of people around here um so any knowledge that I’ve had you know winning in 11 winning in nine winning in 12 I try to think and see how can I Implement to that now to help these guys

Out to have the right uh mental to get ready for this game and so uh but yeah you’re you’re right man I I piggyback off a lot of those situations I’ve been through uh but mainly man it’s just telling these guys man everything you know value is the key you know when you

Playing special team knowing uh other positions not just your own um just just going the extra mile doing the little things yeah one more one more thing Justin Uh you know how like coin used to play mind game with us like he he have he have us running with the ones he have us running with the ones one day and then the next day you come back you you over there on Scout team and you

Like out but in the me you just told me that I did everything great but but I get out here to practice I’m on the scout team have you ever did that not necessarily did that but told your players about that that mentality of being um mentally mentally strong and

Don’t worry about the position you in play like you are the first stren uh yeah definitely man cuz when I was at B I had the situation where um kind of similar to to what you’re saying um and I did everything right but things still

Didn’t seem to go my way um then the older I got the more I realized one coach was just testing me and seeing how I was gonna handle adversity you know how he is yeah and then two um it just you know it created the mindset of no

Matter you know what I mean no matter what happens I still got to make keep the main thing the main thing and so when I wasn’t keeping the main thing the main thing I was messing up on one play and it just carried over to four plays

And so I I had a real hard look at myself going into my junior year what can I do to help this team to get to that next stage and such and such and so um I talk about all that man as far as um you know coach like I said coach

Wanted coach wanted me to be and you heard him say I’m not gonna coach you as the the freshman at sophomore I’m gonna coach you in the junior senior you’re going to be right and so it took me a while to realize and understand what he

Was saying he had high standard for me and you know how you know how coach is he had a high standard and I wasn’t living up to that standard so like you said he’ll bring you down yeah it’s it’s a test that’s what it is it’s a test you

Want to see where you at okay well he’s probably you know a few weeks away so let me just sit him back down here but everybody goes through that process and that’s what these young guys got to realize everybody goes through it yeah it might be some that just the Julio

Joneses of the world you know what I mean the markam of the world that’s just that’s nature and so you got to grind you gotta grind one thing real quick before we I was trying to get you to do this earlier but um when when Dante got

Hurt what is that what goes through your mind when you go in because when you’re not the guy getting the wars the reps with the ons and now this guy’s hurting you’re the guy and you gotta go out here in front of a 100 thousand people right

So it goes back to what Bo was asking me I was young and immature I was pissed off why I’m not playing why I’m not getting more playing time not realizing I’m not preparing I’m not working how Dante and Rando mlan is working and so I kind of pretty much just sh played

Around did enough just to get by I’m trying not to cuss did enough just to get by and when that time was called I wasn’t ready so it took R mlan to sit me down to show me how to watch F to show me how to have the you know just how to

Look at certain things and so and that’s why I tell young guys now no matter if you feel like your time ain’t ready it’s one Injury One play away so you better stay ready because when you get in there and you wanted the opportunity and you’re not ready things gonna be bad for

You then you’re really gonna be upset with yourself and so yeah that’s that Nico you played in multiple national championships under Nick Sabin one of which was played in the rosebowl stadium so you know what it’s like to play Under Sabin I’m curious if you can give us some insight into what those

Preparations look like going into the game and is there a difference between the guys you know playing in La a very different location than what they’re used to playing around the SEC um I don’t think it’s any different um because of who’s who’s coaching them you know coach hav has that standard and

It’s if you either buy into it or you won’t play and so no matter where it is Rose Bowl uh Sugar Bowl they’re all they’re always goingon to work the way they they been working for years um but that that atmosphere there that stadium is it’s crazy uh those lights it at

Times it feels like this the field was like elevated above everything else um to be in that that the granddaddy of a mall um I’m excited for those guys because they work their butts out to get back to where they are um but they go

Back to Camp mode I mean Bo I tell you they go back to Camp mode and they’re gonna work they’re gonna grind and so that’s why teams like us we got to be at our best you know playing Washington this week I mean all these teams are

Good and so we’re not at our best anything can happen but to answer your question uh it’s back to work back to the basics uh which which always it helped us at the same time because when you come off a long layover or whatever it might be you know you’re Prosper out

Of shape you put yourself in a situation where you miss a lot of tackles and so every year coach always went back to Camp mode uh to the point where making sure the basics were what they needed to be when they go back to Camp when you when

You know you in the playoff you’re like man but at the same time you have it because you know you f to go back to Camp practice and it’s a lot of hit and practice is very long you know what let me let me get to

My question um Nico you know uh the guys have said that they are they are very proud of you and I am proud of you because you still Bama you BMA bread you built by bre that’s just that’s the bottom line but what I W to know what I wantan I got a

Hypothetical question so if y’all beat Washington and we beat Michigan and y’all and y’all end up like playing us you know what I want to do man I want us to like hang out you know and you know just hang out with me for a little bit

Just go out for a drink or something you know and just celebrate you know what I mean just all that you know we definitely can do that we can do that just me and you just me so you you g him the purple and you giving

Him the green yeah so drinks on me buddy I got you yeah and I I you come over my house man and I’ll make the drinks and we’ll hang out you know we’ll talk about football that’s all I [Laughter] want all right next question Justin that’s it that’s all all right

Alabama part three that’s what we all want to see so my question to you is as far as all that you’ve experienced as a player and now as a coach where would that rank in levels of you know great being great experiences um even the first game uh

The second game this year uh first game however you want to put it it was a little weird for me you know that’s that’s really believe it or not that’s my first time being back in Tuscaloosa uh being in the stadium and such um so it’s a little weird a little mix

Emotions you know we won the game U didn’t know to be mad or celebrate um but uh it would be up there it would be up there but at the same time it also feel weird um because this I mean this is the team that I work my butt off for

For four straight years and um Blood Sweat and Tears want with my teammates and such uh but like you said I’m on the coaching side now so it’s like our guys over here busting their butt and and and trying to you know change things around here and so uh it’s always gonna feel

Weird especially when I’m not in that Crimson tell the truth you wear Alabama socks under all that come on we know you got the Alabama socks on but no of course it’s going to be weird but it it’ll be a uh it’ll be it’ll be a big moment for me um because

It’s the first time uh one I’m coaching or second time now I’m coaching but I’m playing against my old school in a national championship yeah of course we’re not we’re not looking ahead around here we got to take care of Washington and do what we need to do um but for the

Most part yeah it it’ll be it’ll be a cool moment but until then it’s all Washington all right before you get out here I know Justin had a question but I got one for you real quick hey man y’all do realize we on time limit right I know but I’m G

Make this one real quick so next year on y’all’s 2024 schedule do you all play Oklahoma still yeah okay that’s all I want to know I didn’t know what the schedule look like for you all moving to the SEC and and and rudely before we go

Close in person how he he rocks with his his dine and so now being in there with him for two years it’s it’s a family and you can see it the bond the closeness the accountability to that you know each and every last one of those guys in

Their braing uh it’s pretty it’s something special man and that’s why you know a couple like guys been able to have uh get national attention uh because it’s a testament to how close we are in that room and how we able to hold each other accountable uh we really in

There we don’t get too high get too low we understand every week it’s gonna be a challenge and those guys go attack but he is who he is he ain’t changing now he his standard his his standard if you don’t buy up buy into it it’s gonna be a

Long year for you so he’s been good man he’s been good for for the room uh those guys have really bought in this year uh more than other years because uh I think everything that he’s been preaching has came to the front you know all the the the constant

Working techniques is constantly showing up and these guys is seeing that success and so guys are bought in and it’s to his Testament of staying consistent and patient with him um he’s animated on the field he’s getting after but in the in the classroom we call it um he slows it

Down he teaches these guys and he keep it he treat it like an NFL NFL room and allow these guys to be themselves so it’s been good for that’s what’s up man that’s well Nico man we greatly appreciate you taking the time I know that time is something that’s very rare

These days especially coaching at Texas but we appreciate every moment I hate it took so long but we got you here that’s all that matters and you don’t have you don’t have to answer Marvin’s text it’s okay you can just talk to me or Steve that’s that’s the way we like it

Rough senior Year my last senior game against Viger High School um I had 14 15 different schools at that game that night um I was I was down to my last two visits for Alabama in uh Florida State and um got a a bad knee injury wow and

Didn’t didn’t have one offer not one offer uh going into that game I mean going after I got out of the hospital but uh had a knee injury went into the hospital had I have Dr Andrews operated on my knee I woke up coach stal was sitting right there right

Beside me and he was like man I don’t care if you never play another down again I want you to be at the University of Alabama I just got one question how did you end up at Dr Andrews and not Dr F man um I was in high school question

Hey I was in high school and I had somebody I have no idea who asked told my mom to uh report to uh call Dr Andrews I never heard of him we never heard of I’m in dolin Alabama he was in Birmingham at the time and uh some guy

Was like hey you need to take him to Dr Andrews in Birmingham and that’s what we did and uh man we um it helped helped out a lot and like I said I woke up I woke up that morning and looked over to my right he was over there with my mom

And uh he said he he didn’t care if I played another down at the University of Alabama he just wanted me to be there and my mom was like hey you going there so uh they sent me sent me to Junior College for a year year and a a year and

A half and uh went there was all American there then jumped over until came over to Alabama and played and started playing there and um it wasn’t a good ride at first you know when I got to Bama um you know I was line biker

Just just running to the ball and when I got there you had to be the student a student of a game and I never was a student of a game I was just R keys and all this and all that but when we got to coach brother Oliver defense you had to

Understand saying you had to be a smart guy you had to be all in and you had to know what was going on and how the defense was ran and I didn’t know that so I got benched my first game people don’t know that I got benched first game

In in Vanderbilt and didn’t play the second game didn’t play the third game and all of a sudden um I was getting ready to transfer and um I had a lady stuck to me and said hey stick it out for one more year I mean one more

Week one more week and I stick it out for one more week coach Stalin came in and Coach Oliver came in and say hey we’re gonna start you this week against Georgia and uh man I went out and played hard practiced hard I was hitting everybody I didn’t care I getting kicked

Out of practice because I was going full speed and hitting the quarterback and all that and um that night of uh the night night before the game p was like man I think you gonna have a great great game J P said I think you have a great

Game I said I hope so first play of the game I got beat and he over threw threw the ball and you know brother Oliver he always he he will bench me after that first mistake uh he put me on the headsets he said hey man calm down go back in

There and um play relax I go back in I finish the game I had three interceptions I had a touchdown an interception for a touchdown I had 13 titles that’s what’s up you know what you did right the thing about it though yeah you know what a lot of people don’t understand

And I always say this there’s there’s two positions on defense you have to be a student of the game If You’re Gonna Play middle linebacker and safety you better know every personel grouping and every possible player that can come out of those groups otherwise you cannot play those two positions and and the

Thing about it with me too is um I never was able to coming up I like I said I played outside linebacker coming up and running back so only thing I did was read Keys read guards take it to the ball I ain’t have nothing else to do

When I got the Bama I if the running bike moved I had to do another check if the inside backer inside receiver move it was another check if the quarterback going shotgun we was checking something else so I was lost man I was lost for a whole three whole three weeks of pricing

Man because he was like everybody be quiet we gonna make Kevin make the checks and he cuss me out every freaking day man step off the ball somebody go motion or shift it man you had and you had to get everybody in line because everybody was waiting on you to make

Him and Jimmy Rangers great friends so he’s come up Jimmy flies him in and he comes up and uh I talk to him every four months and uh we have a good time and take pictures and he always said man I I appreciate you and uh and I always tell

Him I love him just just because you know he he was the only one that believed in me at that time Marvin your turn sir all right so being a former safety I know you watch football very similar to the way that I watch the game what do you think is

Lot of people want to drive down and so when you drive you get that money so everybody was like coach let us drive so we are and everybody got most of the guys got their PM from Tuscaloosa all the way down to um Tampa so when you got

There you got a big check and so you know what you did with the big check you had a good time but at the same time he kept it fun he kept it relax and he made it enjoyable only thing he told us every single day just don’t embarrass the

My life was um I took it as that it was hard it was very hard you know I cried and cried I ain’t gonna sit here and lie to you it was very hard coming off a knee injury and having 14 Schools deny you and turn their back on you and not call

You and even check on you and see how you was doing you know what I mean and then I get go to Junior College after a year of rehabbing go to Junior College and show out in junior college now I got all these same old people same old

Schools coming down to Jones Junior College trying to see me me over somebody that took a took an hour have to come down to to Birmingham or 45 minutes to go to Birmingham see me in the hospital talk to my mom wait till I wake up in the morning out out of

Surgery and look over there and and and talk and tell me what I that he he wanted me at his university he didn’t care if I played or down or anything so wa was a blessing are you crying it will make you cry if you will

It will make you cry is is is when I see him I always give him a hug and tell him thank you because you know without him you know I I won’t know I wouldn’t know where I’ll be at because of U just a chance you know a chance and he he felt

Like that I’ll be able to play again and he sent me to Junior College for that year and uh he showed everybody that um that he was I was back and and I told my junior college guys I said I’m not talking to anybody that comes down here

To see me I’m going to Alabama that’s where I’m at that’s where I’m going if they come I’m not talking to them because they left me on and I remember the day it was November the 26 and they left me and we played viager in Dolan

Alabama and like I said we had 15 Scouts there and Alabama was one of them and 14 I never heard from him again until Junior College hey man that’s a success man that’s a success story it rough and then I had to get get the then I had to

Get the B and have another success story because I almost left down too so we ain’t G leave but you ain’t gonna cry on here now tell you though you know that that’s very big of you because most people don’t understand what it takes to recover from that type of KNE surgery
