Really paid much mine to Steelhead what is it that makes it the best fish and or the best season for fishing and you guys can answer that too cuz we got over 400 of you guys watching but I want Owen to answer that or do you even think it’s
The best season I do for fishing I do my favorite is steelhead for sure and for me it goes back to being a kid we always fish salmon when I was a kid growing up it was always on the coast cuz you couldn’t fish to Columbia for all those
Folks that said I’ve been fishing this the Columbia for spring shinook all your lives that’s not true uh but no it that’s that’s a really good question what makes it the best well how hard it is to catch them how good you feel about it when you do actually catch one cuz
For growing up you almost had to hit the dump dump button there growing growing up it was really one of those things where you could go fishing three days in a row and never touch a fish and then when you actually caught one yeah it was
For a week you felt great about it and that just kind of got burnt into me I guess when I was young and then the dutes uh we we rafted that a lot in the summertime and catching those summer Steel had really gotten my blood and that’s where this Steely right here
That’s all I carried was steelies steelies could you fish from a boat back then or did you have to do the bank thing still it was Bank only back then it was single sash only you couldn’t have troubles like you so the bank fishing only like reducing the
Sportsman’s access to the fishes brought all those wild steel had Back 40 years ago you said oh it did okay no it didn’t do that just checking but the fishing was still really good don’t get me wrong it was still really good but again that question’s tough enough to answer that I
Mean fishing is one of those things too where you have to really work hard you have to do everything the right way but they’re more they’re harder to access I think um you can still fish small rivers for salmon just like you can steel head uh but there’s just something a steel
Head is just a different animal they’re just not just how they look or along those lines I don’t even like to eat steel head I mean I I eat them but that’s not why I’m after them I’m after them to see if I can actually convince one to bite
If I can find them you know and then get them to bite um but the reward is just amazing um and there’s a reason why most people that fish a lot or at least have grown up in the Northwest would say that steelhead fishing is their favorite um
They fight hard they’re acrobatic I mean they’re just it’s an amazing animal there’s no one I’ll say this right there’s nobody on the planet that cares more about steel head wild or Hatchery than folks like us and you that are watching at home not a single one of
Them everybody else wants to politicize them and make things more of a nightmare for for their pocketbook exactly uh but nobody cares more about steel head than we do um well I mean that correlation is like the same thing with like Ducks Unlimited in Sierra Club like who’s
Actually put more aside you know as far as a conservation effort for acreage of wetlands and it’s duck Ducks Unlimited by like 10 fold or more yeah or more then so like Sportsmen truly care about their Quarry Oh yeah and when it comes to Steel H there is no exception well I
Mean you could even go further back I got in this discussion on the show with a with the viewer a couple of years ago because I had mentioned um Theodore Roosevelt being the one that broke out all the national parks well he did that for the opportunity for people
To go hunting and protect those animals all around the country and if he wouldn’t have done that there’d be Sky Rises there now there would be buildings all that stuff falls down to somebody that was actually an outdoors person that cared about it if you would have
Left it up to the bureaucrats at ruining them here right now would have wiped it all out a long time ago studied it to death and built it up I mean I’m seeing a lot of your guys’ great comments best fighters in freshw water small tackle I
I personally like them because of like where you get to kind of go I mean not to say like where steel go salmon don’t go but the reality is is like certain times of years like you know little Creeks that you would think that would never even hold fish like you can
Actually go and have productive steel at fishing and you can go you know and it seems like the places and then it’s then when you’re when you add all the different places that you can go get a steel Hood it really turns like more into a hunting game and like knowing the
Conditions and knowing the timing and kind of knowing that because when you hit it right steel had bite they’re fantastic when you run into one but sometimes that’s the challenge just running into one yeah well I can say one of the reasons why again going back onto
That why I love him so much is the way we used to fish for him when I was young growing up it was drift fishing only right we didn’t do anything well we threw steelies and stuff sometimes for winter steel head but and again you know
Somebody were to ask which one is your favorite is summer seel head your favorite or winter seel head just to ask just winter winter all the way yeah now I’m kind of 50/50 but it’s winter because the winter fish you can be out there when it’s snowing it’s the whole
Thing of it being cold that’s you fish all day long it’s the again it’s just one of those things once you get into whoever that was that said you’re not into sket fish much once you do get into steel Head fishing you will be ruined James good sh I thought you I thought

In the midwest work in the pnw I mean a lot of there there’s so much back and forth trade that’s what was cool like showing it on your guys’ show when we were catching them because I mean we were using beads that I don’t
Even car oh no I do carry one yeah one in the Box here beads that big an8 mil we just yeah maybe I think that’s an eight cuz that’s a that’s a 10 either way like six 8 mil beads was like the staple there like that’s what they threw and the reality
Is is like we just don’t throw a lot of that super now there are times and there are videos where we’ve think there’s a video where we might have hooked 100 steel head 2 in the in Washington where we fished little tiny beads um but the reality is is it’s something that just
Goes back into the mind and it’s not in our Playbook you know you go out there you fish a worm you fish a bead you fish a bait do whatever you can do and then you kind of leave the whole especially if you where they think there’s fish
There those guys would never leave without throwing like little tiny beads and you’d see like fish that you thought had gone stale on you fire back up fishing bead so we did absolutely um we did um absolutely learn probably we we let me phrase that we got a good refresh on stuff that
We’ve all read about but actually to see it work into production have it happen in front of your eyes and then have it happen so effectively that it was like why did I do that first like we will be utilizing some of those techniques over here for sure well yeah there’s no doubt
An 8 mil bead and six lb fluorocarbon especially the last few years has been effective in the Northwest but that’s the last dist Resort those are situations that we don’t even it typically is a Steeler Fishman you don’t even want to fish right when it’s that
Low that clear a Northwest if you have to what if it’s your what if you waited all weekend or all week for that one weekend to fish then you better have that six PB fluo and 8 milon beads and size four size six hooks where most people just stay home which they would
Yeah you know and a lot of times when those conditions are like that it’s so cold right that is too J January February we so cold your guides are freezing up when you’re fishing a lot of people will not tolerate that and that’s when that water typically is super low

That’s really the only ones that are around I mean if you were to I mean one we need more right okay let’s we can say that but there are groups and Association or groups out there that that do do that um but Northwest Steelers is the first one that crosses
My mind yep well there you go Northwest Steelers join them up and I know they do local meetings for us I’ve spoken out a few of them myself and yeah I went to one and bombed so for all those people forgive me he bom yeah which one
Of the the you’re used to talking to cameras on I’m standing around like you know this is what I like to do and this and that and I didn’t describe anything I didn’t put anything in their hands I wasn’t a guy standing up there talking to live people standing in front of me

Times that do monthly meetings they have monthly speakers ships they are great tools to go basically join the club yeah and uh also learn and learn from people that are like trying to be involved in stuff too so it’s it’s uh definitely work for sure it’s it’s worth looking

Hat fish out of there and the river turned over and the river is and the Wilds are not coming back and I don’t know why because I’ve been told that if you get rid of those Hatcher fish the Wilds come back and Leaps and Bounds but
But then I know that every bass that lives in the Lower River and every bird that kills a smol on the river and all that so like I don’t know something’s weird there but the reality is is I think it was better and I mean if you
Want to really you want to really use numbers and play that game well I mean look back in like 2005 2006 when we had 600,000 summer steel head pouring over Bonville Dam and now last year we were right I mean and now I remember those days disgusting and it’s even more

My jigs being pushed up by any kind of current I want them down I want them fishing I have to cover all the ground literally all the ground and the only way to do that effectively is with a heavier jig that’s going to get down fast get into the strike zone and stay

Something and fish it at 25 feet when the fish are all hiding from you for the new steeled folks that are out there that advice by itself between between the fixed and the sliding float the situation when and when not to use them at least preferred by by cam um will

What we built a show on initially was how many of my friends could I help move along before they shut me down the first six months they were like you’re done dude you don’t make it six months we don’t expect you to make it six months so anything past 6 months you’re living

Into it and if there’s no if there’s no upside for the networks then it’s gone because it’s it’s certainly a thorn in their side they get a lot of flak for outdoor programming a lot of people commenting like Thanks for the Memories these kind of comments watching growing
Legend in the house like a lot of this stuff but the other thing is too is like some of these products and some of these partners and stuff are you know like you said you you you put them on the map it’s a good quality thing and that the
Reality is is it’s benefited the Sportsman just as a whole because that stuff’s like honestly available oh yeah we’re not out there like making making plugs or flashers and hooks and whatever other materials you know line fishing lines and stuff and so um without that mechanism there some of our favorite
Stuff you know may not or probably won’t be there or even Fisheries or even Fisheries right I mean think about it all the people that you’ve helped educate to become better at what they’re doing they then will invest more into whatever it is gear boats trucks whatever right all
That trickles down because somebody got excited or motivated by something that they either saw online or they saw on TV with without those you know how many more people have been put into the woods around the river now there’s going to be people out here that going to go you you
Son because people are more involved I’m telling you right now without that involvement from new people to getting involved I’m going to tell you they want to take it all away and you can go look up on your own who they is but they want to take it all the way without extra
People getting involved who knows where we would be now without I’m not talking about outdoor GPS at all everyone I’m just saying overall yeah the amount of information that’s available now it’s a Lifeline to our way of life without the engagement in the sport we have no sport
No like we would have no I mean if you don’t have a bunch of soccer players running around the cities playing soccer on the fields the fields go away yeah it’s it’s it’s it’s 100% uh 100% the case too but I also think there duck hunting sucks I also think yeah also

Up because I know for a fact that in some instances before outdoor GPS like in my young years we would read something in in another Outlet or another situation which which wouldn’t tell people and and get people engaged on like the exact like intricacies like like how to so then other people would
Flock to the river and then kind of mess things up for everybody because you didn’t you didn’t have guys that were like technically trained or not trained but at least have an idea of like what they could see like oh okay this is like what I heard that these guys do and then
Try to mimic and try to MIM they were just doing their doing their own thing right um and the reality is is then it mucked it up for the guys that knew what they were doing no I agree so there’s a little bit of like that too and then
