It’s always interesting to me to hear when a player wins the toss whether they elect to serve or receive and Coco go immediately said serve no hesitation feels like she can get right into this match and clearly is feeling very confident how about the power strike from the

Get-go that’s going to be the challenge for gof because Osaka has been doing a good job of staying close to the Baseline dictating with pace and depth and you mentioned her confidence before Coco’s confidence if you needed any indicator of that when she was out here

With all the biggest stars of the game in the bushire relief match and she wasn’t taking a backward step she wasn’t in a of any of them she was happy being out there with them she is a confident young lady let it’s interesting though it doesn’t feel

Arrogant or obnoxious true it just feels like it is what it is yeah that’s good heat on the serve already 175 hard to handle for aaka this is a good statement early on clearly showing you that golf has learned a lot from that meeting in New

York this is a much better start a more confident start clearly she’s worked on that aspect 4 tried to driller with the body serve 162 there’s the difference we were talking about with the speed of the second serve she really went after that second serve Coco golf’s team her parents there

The bottom right of the screen works with coaches at the glute Academy that’s good Movement by osaku could hear her feet working trying to get in position to set up and be on balance and when Osaka is on balance these shots are just moving through the air 132 km per hour off that

Forehand already some heavy hitting going on this is going to be so enjoyable and it’s going to be powerful as well a bit of a slugfest already in the first three minutes that’s a good hold for the [Applause] teenager let for service 15 that’s going to be maybe one

Difference in this match G very comfortable coming in volleying she’s got already a doubles title under her belt just pull that one long but it’s the right move and you’ve got to make these mov moves early in a match and if you do make those moves early

What you do is you get your opponent thinking straight away exact exactly and you also get reps you know you don’t want the first time that you go into the net to be at you know five all 4030 you want it you want to feel more confident once you get to those tight

Situations 1 so good heat on that 189 and that’s just 1 kilometer an hour shy of her quickest serve of the tournament so far s for T well that probably tells you something about what Coco’s thinking having a swipe at that second serve yeah that’ll be golf’s best chance

To take control dictate on off the Osaka serve she gets a second it’s quite a bit slower game not too many worriors for the defending champion in her Opening Service game one game Sak has been coach started working with whim facette there on the left her fitness trainer on the right Abdul

Salah physio there in the Box as well her father there in the back you can see between between those two [Applause] that’s a whole area of golf’s game where she’s probably more comfortable than Osaka is coming in playing in the midcourt taking volleys out of the [Applause]

Air and as well as all of the planning that has gone in for the reasons that Naomi talked about with her temperament so far in this tournament she’s got a bit hot under the collar a couple of times I’m sure that’s something that she’s conscious of tonight to keep it on

An even kill big atmosphere talented opponent just keep things balanced because there will be times where things will go against her and it’s important that you don’t lose your cool a number of those times we saw Osaka get upset in her first couple of rounds with the conditions the wind she was struggling

With some of that she worked it out can’t afford that negativity tonight it’s beautiful truck good positioning from G she had gone crosscourt a couple of times with that backand that time changing it up and she’s getting good pop on her serve as well that was her quickest this really is winning our

Appetite for something special this is going to be so [Applause] enjoyable 15 L I’ll go back in to golf choosing to serve a lot of players in this situation where there might be a little more tension some nerves would choose to receive so they could get into the match give themselves some room

Before they have to serve G very quickly choosing to serve confident in that area and that could prove important if this set gets tight towards the end could be a bit of an advantage for gol to be serving first in the count right now Osaka she’s got fire in

Her eyes on her serve clearly understanding that’s dictate large portion of her success out there this is as sharp as she’s looked so far in these championships a love game for the 2019 Champion one of the other good things about playing a match where you know

You’ve got to play your best it’s a tough opponent there’s a lot of focus on it sometimes it it causes you to hone in just a little bit more and certainly Osaka she looks as good as we’ve seen her in this third match [Applause] 15 this young woman has missed one first

Surf 14 of 15 so far she’s got into play 1 when they go into play She’s winning a good percentage of them 73 her opponent Naomi Osaka in her two Opening Service games is perfect when the first serve is gone in these are excellent numbers for both

Players so far on serve could say Osaka could get her first serve percentage up a little bit but she is devastating with that first serve and how she’s been moving it around the box coco not far behind her both players largely dominating on their serve entertaining opening continues Dad’s on his [Applause] feet

Love first time in the six game so far that the server hasn’t won the first point of the game so this constitutes just a little opening outstanding from the young lady that’s just good stuff so athletic the speed Court coverage and recognition of what shot to hit once she got

There and it wasn’t an easy overhead she couldn’t get herself set but she put it away with precision 15 a lot of that is because of the doubles that g has played throughout her Junior career and certainly here at the start of her professional career already has a doubles title under her

Belt than I think for uraka though you know she knows what to expect from this match and there’s that overhead again in the athleticism of golf this ball was driving her back and she got back and under it explosive movement 14 they don’t all have to be

Thunderbolts that one at 157 but perfect placement and this has been a good game from Naomi after a bit of a stumble early on she was down L 30 G can continue to get that type of depth on her shots that’s going to help her go toe-to-toe that way with Osaka from the

Ground [Applause] credible to think that gol already has a singles title under her belt and two doubles I’m not going to sell her short she’s got two doubles titles already just 15 well she had no right to stay in the point but she stayed there probably about three shots longer than she could

Have that’s a significant hold three GES after being down love 30 Osaka does such a good job of taking control of of points and not letting up she keeps dictating steps in hard to watch sometimes it’s nerve-wracking now this is the last game with these balls players have been

Talking a bit about the way they fluff up in particular at the end of their natural life and na can sense a little chance here 15 already you can see Osaka maybe has the superior Firepower when she’s on balance and set up but gol she can generate

Excellent Pace she’s got good speed she can close off that court maybe force a few more errors from Osaka and again second serve straight at the nose of Nomi Osaka the body served just handcuffed her jammed her up couldn’t do a thing with it and it had good speed again on that second

Serve [Applause] w 14 golf has been trying to go for that second serve a little bit more and that may cause few more double faults clearly it’s a game plan and the encouragement coming from the box saying okay we expect a couple of those along the way but just stick to the plot Nobody’s bloed just yet there may be some opportunities for gol to step in a little bit more on some of those second serves right now Osaka doing a decent job on second but nowhere near as good as when she gets that first serve in awkward one to handle because it came

Off the frame of the Racket and that may have just taken a little spin when it hit the ground that ball was going in all sorts of different directions and this almost had to be a winner with where Osaka’s position was forced her to overplay

It Miss go is jumping the on the right basine the ball’s it’s often the case when the ball gets on you quicker than you think that it has clipped the back of the line and just skid it on through 13 go win she’s doing a really good job of mixing

Up what she’s giving to Osaka sometimes it’s the low flat one other times there’s a bit of loop about them she doesn’t know what’s coming next and on a couple of those shots it looks like Osaka is really conscious of golf speed her Court coverage kind of hesitated slightly on that last backand

Now does she go full out attack mode on a second serve that she knows is not going to be fast the first big moment of the match now this is where that little additional pressure comes in when you’re serving second just less space to work with if

You get broken oaka clearly feeling a little more tension the last few points a couple of times in her first round match when she got into this position she found the thunderus serve let and that’s what she was looking for there that would have clearly been a quicker serve of the

Match come on the first big moment goes the way of the [Applause] teenager she’s doing what a lot of people in the stadium are doing who want golf to win this one and she played a fantastic game good series of points there at the end

What a way to follow it with a serve like that 172 the slider out wide just about UNR returnable it’s literally been a high level of intensity from the very first point the very first ball golf still digging deep within come on Lomi Osaka just remaining on her bended knee

There she’s concerned and well she might be the youngster just two points away from completing a remarkable first set Osaka’s timing is left her for a moment she’s looking up at her box and trying to get some answers from them what a complete set of tennis this young woman has played she’s been

Exceptional three set points to wrap it up up against the defending title holder no less in just over half an hour come on what a brilliant set of tennis by the 15-year-old and they stand at Rod La Arena and well they might Coco go is on her way she takes the first 63

In 32 minutes 15 good way to start the second [Applause] that’s the area that golf can actually do an even better job in attacking the Osaka second serve that one just one 30 kilomet per hour good timing’s deserted her for the moment in that last game of the first

Set there were quite a few balls that were halfway up the net and that’s exactly what she’s trying to do now just try and get the feet moving well it’s been mainly on the backhand side that she’s thrown in error after error got to find that timing again

That’s been Osaka’s problem hasn’t it because she was 28 unforced erors against bver in the first round against Jung in the second round she was 30 unforced errors that was something that she had to do tonight to eliminate them and she’s up to 15 already and she just hit the ball straight back

To Coco there she’s not in a good head space at the moment she’s really struggling it’s not the area that Osaka is most comfortable in but this was a pretty basic volley and she just butchered it too many unfor starers off the Osaka racket right now in trouble again oh

Boy this is alarm bells for the defending champion we actually have to say that golf has surpassed Osaka right now on serve serving bigger more consistently hitting her targets and they just contined to go in the first delivery as well 83% after it was 82 in the first set meaning that

She’s missed only five first serves for the match so far under this sort of pressure on this stage against this sort of opponent that’s extraordinary 1 masaka normally likes to have opportunities to step in to dictate off the return and she’s just not getting those opportunities she’s trying

To force it and it’s causing a few more errors 14 where are the answers where are they going to come from 43 clearly it was part of the strategy for G to keep going after the second serves not let Osaka step in at will has caused the third double fought of the

Match by the look of it she’s still prepared to take that risk though they’re going to stick at it that’s better look like off took a little bit off the first serve to get it going and oaka took advantage of it doing a better job at the

Net still got that volley a little too close to her but she made it work that was the wrong [Applause] shot it felt a little bit like a panic shot yeah gol didn’t know what to do usually when you are ahead the idea is to keep hitting keep swinging

Not a bad way to defend the break point 180 out wide shows some emotion does the young lady in the context of the match in the context of Naomi Osaka’s defense of her Australian Open championship this game is massive I wonder if now is the time to di it

Back a bit we have two double faults same side that toss is getting a little too ahead of her out in front definitely go a little bit more for placement on this first serve it don’t get to be a dual Grand Slam Champion if you can’t handle pressure

And that was pressure of the highest order for Naomi Osaka one game she’s done a brilliant job to break back and do it at the best possible time and that is immediately we saw just a little crack in the game of golf and Osaka recognizing it and stepping in to take

Advantage 15 maybe she just needs to take a deep breath at the moment Coco yeah it’s got to be frustrating the way she lost her surve she was up 405 looked like she was pretty much cruising there and all of a sudden things have changed it would have been unrealistic to think

That she would have been able to maintain that level that she produced in the first set all the way through the match there had to be a little trough at some stage maybe we’re seeing it right now 4 L now it’s Osaka who’s just staying staying focused not panicking middle of

Some of these points it’s got to feel a lot better for her team right now that is an exceptional mini comeback from Naomi Osaka she was tearing down the barrel you feel that golf is the one over hitting at the end of these rallies got to find a way to slow things

Down and just focus on one point at a time keep the goals a little bit smaller right here every time a rally has been five shots or more in this set Osaka’s won [Applause] it [Applause] 15 now does she dial it back a little on the second serve or does she keep on

Going for it there’s your answer 1 died it back just a little bit just 144 that time she’s been up in the low 160s a couple of big misses from Osaka on the return and and that’s showing a little bit of inexperience this this is a time

15 all keep putting that ball back on the golf racket especially after the last two games the momentum change and it did just click the line after that brilliant return of serve set it up [Applause] She’s managed to come up with the hold thanks to a couple of from Naomi Osaka this is just living up to what we wanted isn’t it this promised to be a brilliant match with all sorts of questions to be asked of both players and it’s turning out that

Way I mean we’re seeing a little bit of everything in this match both players have started out started out at a really high level usaka dropped off a little bit then golf Saka has raised her level here we are now back on serve things have normalized again tennis fans will be watching this

Because it’s a big tournament one of the big four but this is one for sports fans as well with all of the subplots and the different stories it’s just captivating first double fault of the match for Naomi that’s been interesting just the whole story surrounding this match the

Backstory from the US Open everything that happened there of course what gol has done bursting onto the scene as well as Osaka with a couple of titles this has a bit of everything all the drama apart from the tennis we have two young women women who represent the global

Nature of the sport and there’s just so much that is a part of what this match is what it represents and you also get the feeling that this is a rivalry that may go on for the best part of a decade and then some game second she has shown some

Championship qualities Naomi Osaka and getting herself back into the set we’re on serve it’s 3-2 in the second out 15 up with golf speed and Court coverage she’s forced Osaka into a few more of those types of Errors made Osaka hit into a smaller and smaller space the end of some of these

Points out 13 so often GF has gone into the body especially on the second serve not wanting to give Osaka the space to swing away talked about that win predictor before the match 89% favoring Osaka shifted dramatically after the first set 11 how about that 185 first Ace of the match and an

Impressive one at that and the youngster gets a little chance to chill out on serve an impressive service game again and Naomi is just taking a cut at the second serves and more often than not when they’ve been dialed back into the 140s it’s been straight into the net or way

Over the B line no Osaka’s just not having a lot to work with on some of these second serves and that’s normally what she’s looking for to be able to step in and just give it a ride hasn’t been able to do that very often last game with these balls

And just for the moment again the pendulum might have swung a little bit well and G is doing a fantastic job when she can just get those serves from Osaka back Osaka wasn’t ready for that reply out there it is again it’s either halfway up the net or two or 3T over the

Baseline she had that period in the first set where that was the case and it’s returned well remember in Osaka’s previous matches she’s been getting a lot of free points on serve she’s not getting as many here just doesn’t seem ready to play some of those second and third

Balls oh how quickly can you get on the boil and how quickly can you go off the board yeah I mean that is that Miss that’s a tough one to take she is Stone Cold at the moment and she’s muttering away to herself and just trying to work this

Out three break points at a critical stage of this second set 15 this is the last game with these balls we often make mention of what happens as they get towards the end of their natural life maybe it might produce something again that is huge Naomi Osaka her form that she momentarily recaptured has deserted her again [Applause] Some of these points Osaka is just not willing to stay in long enough to give herself a chance and a lot of that has to do with nerves and tension that’s building there it is again it’s mid 140s it’s almost always exactly the same speed 144

145 and on second serves she’s won six of nine points in this set after she dialed it back osak is helping her out a whole lot but G has made some smart adjustments on serve instead of going as big on the second she’s going for a little more

Placement she’s going into the body she swung couple out wide to the forehand Osaka has completely lost her Rhythm yeah and this is a 15-year-old making all of those decisions for a self In the Heat of battle impressive oh yes she’s got that look about her what we are seeing here tonight is

Confirmation of what a lot of people have thought for a long time but now she’s is doing it on the big stage she’s showing the world what she’s got she’s showing the defending Champion what she’s got thank You light for service is challenging the call on the right basine the ball is called I’m not sure about this I don’t know and and gol missed that volley perhaps because she was hamping yeah she’s right she needs all the help she can get get at Thea is not done

Yet she can make a stand here hold serve put it back on gof how don’t she get that ball back on the Bic she just hung the racket out and not only did she get it back she got it back with power yeah she’s a fantastic

Athlete Golf and I think it’s wor noting that what she’s doing is not showing the absence of nerves it’s showing the ability to deal with the nerves we saw golf get a little tight at the beginning of the set and she adjust it and work through it now pressure

Squarely back on Osaka in this game she’s been searching for answers for a long time but the problem is she’s running out of time to F them quickly thank you with all the swings in momentum that we’ve seen in this second set alone as Chanda said if she can just just managed

To hold on here you never know what’s going to happen next hold she does and so the 15-year-old is going to have to get it done herself Cory Coco golf leads 5-4 second set the 15-year-old serving for a place in the round of 16 so important to get that first point on

The board especially when it’s essentially a freebie and no wonder Naomi’s patience is just about running out 1 [Applause] she has to challeng surely Ching the call on the right Baseline the balls called out that picture tells the story do she get lucky [Applause] here it has been the most extraordinary night thank You three match points for the 15-year-old remember the [Applause] date January 24 2020 already a rising star in the sport at 15 years of age Coco go take a bell

  1. I still remember not believing Coco had beaten Naomi that easily😭 Coco played well though. Hopefully we can see these 2 build their rivalry next year

  2. Coco played impressive tennis, while Noami was WAY OFF! The latter, in part, could be attributed to Coco's smart playing. Coco delivered many body serves and mixed up her shots nicely. She also has shown remarkable maturity in dealing with nerves and making necessary adjustments. But still, Naomi just never found her rhythm. Her abundant unforced errors helped Coco a lot. I enjoyed the match immensely.

  3. Ooft. I am rooting for Osaka to have a Clijsters-esque comeback next year, but my goodness did she play like trash in this match. I thought I had managed to repress it.
