When we talk about the greatest golfers in history, our minds often go to players like Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus. Still, there are exceptional golfers who remain relatively unknown. Here we’re talking about the greatest ballstriker of all time, Moe Norman. He didn’t dress, talk, or swing like everyone else, and he wouldn’t fade or draw the ball like other golfers did. He would, however, accomplish some of the best ball-striking numbers in the history of golf, with 17 hole-in-ones, three scores of 59, and 33 course records. In contrast to his unusual swing, Tiger famously claimed that only two players truly owned and mastered their swing: Ben Hogan and Moe Norman. Why was he never able to achieve great success? And why are most people not familiar with Moe Norman and his unique golf style? Even though this is a bit of a sad story, after watching it, we’ll never forget him.

Moe Norman was born in 1929 in Kitchener, Ontario.
From an early age, it was clear that Moe stood apart from his siblings as he grappled with the challenge of fitting in due to his strange habits and odd personality. Little did anyone know that Moe was born with autism. In those times, autism had only recently been discovered, and diagnoses were not readily available.

Mount Golf Club he started practicing golf using a bent Branch for a club because his parents couldn’t afford to buy him one for 2 years he practiced golf as often as he could with this bent lump of wood thankfully a caddying client eventually sold Norman an old

Five iron which he paid for in 10 cents each week physically he didn’t look like an athlete this might be why his swing turned out strange and stood out significantly from the typical golfers gripping the club in his palms he adopted a wide leg stance taking the

Club back to only about shoulder height before swiping through the ball a motion that might seem more suitable for a beginning golfer he practiced so much to master his swing that he had to trim the callus off his palms like a shoemaker’s excess leather although there wasn’t an immediate Improvement he gradually

Across Canada while many fans and fellow golfers deemed Norman’s swing as absurd the outcomes spoke volumes Norman displayed outstanding accuracy with his golf shots frequently Landing 20 or more drives within an area no larger than a fruit basket in the ‘ 50s Mo was practicing on the range at the same time

As Ben Hogan he asked Mr Hogan to watch him hit some shots because he had heard that Mr Hogan said a straight shot is an accident Mo hit the first shot and told Hogan there’s an accident after the second shot Mo said there’s another accident then after about 45 balls with the same

Result Mr Hogan walked up to Mo and said son just keep hitting those accidents with his insane accuracy he was the master of shooting Aces setting a record of three hole-in ones in one day he once made one after Mo had lost a tournament the week before with a four putt on the

Today the ball went straight into the hole due to his unusual swing Norman often became the subject of laughter and insults from Gallery fans he was very shy from his childhood and didn’t fit in with the other golfers his choice of clothes was considered by other golfers

They labeled him as an odd duck a term Canadians use to point out when you’re not quite the same as the rest despite his shyness this did not prevent Norman from attempting to play on larger stages he turned professional in 1958 and won the first tournament he played on at the

Canadian PGA Tour his success on the Canadian tour opened doors for him to participate in US tour events during his brief time on the PGA tour Norman was unable to secure a tournament Victory due to a weakness in his game putting however he did secure a tie for fourth

Place at a New Orleans Event in 1959 which marked his final tournament a distressing incident occurred when PGA members confronted him and criticized his speech clothing and appearance this deeply affected the reserved Norman who later said it stopped me from having fun he rarely returned to play occasional events primarily sticking to the

Canadian tour despite his dedication to the game Norman often lived in relative poverty he never married as he never had a lot of money he used to live in motels and had all his life’s belongings in his car including his golf clubs he just drove to golf tournaments did clinics

And many times sneaked into golf courses at night to find a place to sleep it’s tough to do things when you’re broke he said hitchhiking to tournaments sleeping on park benches sleeping in bunkers I slept in bunkers all over Canada you name it I’d go and shoot 61 or 65 win

The tournament then hitchhike back on the highway with my TV set or whatever my first prize was soaking wet I couldn’t afford an umbrella then his life in golf lacked luxury but that changed when he crossed paths with Chicago golf entrepreneur kikendall in the early 80s convinced that Norman’s

Swing embodied the perfect golf stroke kiken became a turning point in Norman’s fortunes as kikendall himself explained scientifically What mo does is perfect it’s what we call an ideal mechanically advantageous golf swing it has the most force with the least effort it’s as perfect as a human being can do

Kendall’s company natural golf compensated Norman for the use of his name and image along with inviting him to conduct several clinics annually but kikendall didn’t stop there he also facilitated Norman’s connection with the CEO of tidalist at the time a move that significantly altered Norman’s life for the better tidalist aimed to capture

Mo’s swing on video and they succeeded additionally they chose to provide him with a $5,000 stipend every month for the remainder of his life the decision astonished Mo who had never encountered such a substantial sum in his career despite his achievements according to kikendall Mo’s reaction was quite

Amusing he took a step back and asked I’ve played your balls all my life what do I have to do for that money the CEO of titlist replied you don’t do anything you’ve already done it we just want to thank you for what you’ve already done unfortunately Mo passed away in 2004 in

His hometown of Kitchener due to heart failure however he leaves behind a legacy marked by the perfect golf swing and one of the games intriguing what ifs would Norman have dominated the PGA Tour as he did in the kennedyan game it’s an interesting question mainly addressed by

The fact that Norman was competitive in only a handful of starts on the PGA tour he accumulated 55 professional wins in his Canadian career with a substantial number of Victories on the amateur circuit it’s evident he had the potential to win but but was that his

Goal Norman seemed to perceive golf as a source of enjoyment that coincidentally turned into a career unlike players such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson known for their intense competitiveness and who have spoken positively about Norman he didn’t seem to possess that same fire there’s nothing wrong with that but it

Introduces an unanswerable aspect to the question of Mo’s capabilities in the professional game nevertheless mon Norman’s story is one that is likely to remain unparalleled in history he was truly unique what are your thoughts on Mo Norman do you consider him the best golfer ever do you believe he would have

Succeeded on the PGA tour if he had participated share your thoughts in the comments below don’t forget to like subscribe and enable post notifications for our latest content updates we’ll see you in the next one
