For the last five years 10-year-old Brighton fan Lucas Newman has helped collect Advent calendars for children suffering from domestic violence having lived through the experience as a baby this Christmas he’s been getting an extra helping hand not just from the team he supports but also their Rivals Crystal Palace
And that’s your favorite isn’t it yes for the past 5 years 10-year-old Lucas Newman has been trying to make Christmas more special for children affected by domestic abuse a cause recognized this year with a surprise from Rivals Brighton and H albian and Crystal Palace where do you want to go next Lucas was
One when his mom Georgie escaped a violent relationship around Christmas 2014 at that point rebuilding her life was just beginning a lot of these families are leaving their homes with with absolutely nothing and same you know we we left with with a nappy bag on
Our back and and that was it so just being able to give something back to these children and these families that are rebuilding their lives from absolutely nothing is just it’s just it’s heartwarming some years later aged just five at the time Lucas came up with an idea to brighten up Christmas for
Children in shelters through Advent calendars we didn’t have them at one point so I said can we start buying them for the refuges and like that because like cuz we didn’t used to have any so when so now we’re going to make them a lot happier this year Lucas appeals to
Crystal Palace Captain Joel Ward who went to Georgie School in West Sussex and the club he supports Brighton the response a surprise invite to Alban’s training ground right let’s see what we can find through here Pedro love Jason probably under there but don’t look hey
And see so this is Lucas and this is hug thank you you’re my favorite player don’t that a brilliant thank you thank you so much en thank you so much thank you thank you in recent years Lucas Georgie and her other son Hugo have appealed to friends family his school and the local
Community for contributions to deliver Advent calendars to six shelters across Sussex with great success but Brighton and hope albian wanted to increase that contribution this was no longer just about Advent calendars oh boys look how amazing is that how are you are you all right yeah nice to meet you nice
To meet you I think you’re both fantastic what is are done boys hi what’s your name what’s your name Lucas yeah sh not to be upstaged Joel Ward captain of Rivals Crystal Palace was only too happy to contribute 45 Advent calendars himself Lucas what he’s doing with his
Brother and with his family um you know it’s enormously courageous of them to do um and it’s also just really wholesome and also restores your belief in humanity at times when you see you know kids who are are stepping out and trying to make a difference and make a change
Before Advent started Lucas delivered the gifts to the Sussex shelters how many in total did you get this year 350 70 yeah 70 selection boxes 746 selection boxes it’s amazing they’ve been brilliant over the years this is I think our fifth year um and then to get
The brighten stuff as well uh this is going to going to make uh the children in our refugees um and the families that uh go to our groups and our One toone support very happy to come and meet the boys and um get to know the stories and
The backgrounds was amazing and um yeah to meet two boys like this who have been through so much but have an attitude to to help other people is fantastic something that we can all learn from l u c s I’m so so proud of him so proud of
Him and anything I can do just to make him understand what a healthy relationship is as he grows older and instill that in him it’s just amazing to see that he’s wanted to grow this year on year it’s a cause so close to both Georgie and Lucas and year after
Year they have given something back highlighting the trauma experienced by survivors of domestic abuse if Lucas can help make their family’s Christmas that tiny bit more special With a Little Help from some friends that’s enough for him Richard Newman Sky Sports
