Jameson Golf Links | Exploring The Perfect Blend of Brilliant Golf in Dublin

The renowned Portmarnock Resort, has unveiled its recently remodelled championship golf course now under a “new” name, but one of great historical importance – the Jameson Golf Links.

Jonny visited the Portmarnock Resort to play the new Jameson Golf Links championship layout and experience this perfect blend for himself. Paul McCanny hosted The Bogey Men as we explored this fun, yet challenging links in person.

The formal link between the Jameson family and Portmarnock ended in 1945 when Willie Jameson (John Jameson’s great grandson) died, but still today the presence of the Jameson family is seen and felt all across the Portmarnock Resort.

As you tee off from the 1st hole there is an unmissable reminder of the family heritage, as three of the Jamesons, including John, are laid to rest in the graveyard to the right of the first fairway.

Enhancements made to the course include the ambitious elevation of greens and tees to provide stunning viewpoints of Dublin bay from the eighth hole all the way through to its breathtaking finishing stretch. One of my favourite holes is the new par 3, 9th hole. Both the tee and the green were elevated and as you step up onto 9 tee it provides the first opportunity to look all around you. There are 360 views across Dublin, with clear views of Portmarnock Golf Club, Dublin port and the Wicklow Mountains in the distance.

Whiskey and golf are two intertwined aspects of Irish life: trust me when I tell you that there is no better place to experience them hand in hand, than at Jameson Golf Links at Portmarnock Resort.

In the 1850s John Jameson built himself a golf course here in Port Marik this is used by family friends and eventually the public as golf became a more mainstream sport across Ireland this meeting of land and sea is the perfect blend of two of Ireland’s greatest exports Golf and whiskey the renowned

Port Marik Resort has unveiled its recently remodeled Championship golf course now under a new name the Jameson Golflinks I’m here at the Port Marik resort to play the new Jameson Golf Links Championship layout and experience this Perfect Blend for myself as you tee off from the first there’s an unmissable

Reminder of the family heritage as three of the Jamesons are laid to rest in the graveyard to the right of the first Fairway how long has that the Rebrand of the name back to the Jameson name kind of B on the cards yeah well I suppose

You could go back to the start and say you know the 1840s when they first arrived out here but when our ownership took over 2019 it was certainly something that you know they felt was a pretty obvious connection and to be fair quite a lot of people wouldn’t be aware

Of all of the Jameson links to this property John James IV was a Avid golfer he built a golf course here which stretched from where we are now all the way down to where the 15th hole is now in Port Mara Golf Club so that would

Have been one of the first places that golf has ever played in Ireland um so yeah there’s lots of connections to the Jameson family but also lots of connections to golf they’ve given a lot uh in terms terms of their legacy uh whiskey obviously and and all of the

Things connected to that but also in Gulf so we’re just trying to I suppose highlight uh our connection to them and also their impact on golf that’s perfect enhancements made to the course include the ambitious elevation of greens and teas provide stunning viewpoints of Dublin Bay from

The eighth hole all the way through to the 18th the re-rooting of certain holes has led to significant changes on the final 10 Halls what was the process of the the redesigned Halls how did you get Jeff Lynch and his team involved yes supp I mean I I started here in uh mid

2021 so there the owners had been here for a little bit at that stage Fint and our link superintendent who’s been here for 30 years this year has obviously been involved on the golf course for a long number of years he had a connection with Jeff Lynch they’d known each other

For a little while you know we got together in a room listed all of the things that we wanted to try and get out of a course redesign definitely remaining a challenging Golf Course but bringing in a little bit more of a fun element to it and then obviously on the

Experience side of things we’ve added in some new pieces JJs which is our halfway area out there which obviously has the Jameson theme just trying to constantly move on and Advance you know all the things that we’re doing in terms of our customer service as well as the golf

Question so Paul this is the first hole of the the redesigned kind of stretch that we’re about to to enjoy now previously the hole was a a dog leg left uh quite a quite a tough tight hole um really got to take it at that bunker

That we can see in the distance and hopefully Just Let It Fade slightly off that yeah it’s a lovely start to challenging stretch of of new H now it’s it’s really nice you kind of you know what you’re in for when you step up here

On the at yeah I mean you know we’ve we’ve obviously come off six a par five seven a very strong Par Four you know this is a this is a shortage Par Four so it’s going to give you a chance sure if you had a good t- shop you know nice

Approach you’re going to have a chance at your birdie so Paul this is the the second now of new redesigned Halls part three ninth hole took me through it like the the walk up here to the elevator T box elevator green it’s stunning it’s your first kind of real Viewpoint of the

Entire property I mean it’s a pretty it’s probably the one of the the nicest locations on the golf course I mean you can pretty much see you can’t see every hole but you can nearly see every hole here you can you know you can take in you know the Dublin Skyline across the

City and then all the way up to the north you know we’ve Ireland’s ey and lambi isand over here as well so it’s a really beautiful place um the objective I suppose with Jeff lyncher architect at the time were to create a Golf Hall which had that backdrop of the IC and

The islands that we have behind us and I think he really managed to to get that there was quite a bit of sand that had to be moved to build this tea box up and then obviously a a complete new restructure in terms of the green as

Well we didn’t want to create an easy golf course but we wanted to create a bit of fun one one of my favorite aspects of of the strong lyns course is you can feel the imposition of the sea so you may not be able to see it on on a

Couple of t- shots but you know it’s there it’s ever present so having these moments where you w up like on 915 here where you can see the seat you can look around but then you see it and you go okay this is lovely this is this is what

We’re here for the significance and the relationship with the James and family obviously doesn’t stop with the 18 holes it’s everywhere look it’s actually just over your shoulder John Jameson and his wife are are right behind you how did that TI in that link to the Jameson

Family Begin Again with with the new ownership yeah so I suppose the current owners the gallardi family Canadian family when they took over the property were really interested in the Jameson connection because obviously you know they knew Jameson they knew of golf here they knew of the resort um and you know

This bar has always been called the Jameson bar since the hotel opened way back when so um we’re really just extending that out a little bit there’s a longstanding history of the Jameson’s being based in the port marck area we talked about on the golf course when when John Jameson created his own

Personal Golf Course here in the 1850s as I said that would have been one of the first places that golf was played in Ireland so not only have they a connection to port marck in the local area but they also have a very strong connection to Bringing golf across from

Their Homeland in Scotland sure you know when people started to see some of those holes coming up out of the ground it was a lot of excitement and I mean the feedback has been fantastic uh from from Members visiting players pretty much unanimous that you know everybody is is

Loving the changes and loving the uh and I’ve you know contacts that I would have throughout the golf industry contact me oh I heard it’s great and whatever so that’s nice to hear so yeah after after 17 stron holes you wanted to finish this off with another another tough t- shot

Yeah well I mean in In fairness I think any really Golf Course worth salt has a strong finishing hole you know uh you certainly don’t want to you don’t want to give away hole on your last hole so it’s a beautiful backdrop obviously with the hotel in in the background with have

The Velvet strand to your right if you if you let one go um so a aim of the game is really today it’s at that bunker on the left hand side I think it’s just out of our reach normally speaking you’d be trying to keep it right of that and

It really opens up the green then you know it’s a lovely match play Hall you know you can see as you’re as you’re coming down the stretch here it’s another intimidating t- shot Paul thank you very much the course is fantastic it’s it’s absolutely stunning it’s it’s

Such a good but fun tastic gol it’s it’s everything you really want from a a lynx Resort course in duin really yeah you you know there’s something here for everybody whether you’re a accomplished golfer or whether you’re somebody that just likes to have a bit of fun I think

You’ll enjoy it no it’s fantastic fantastic good to see you thank you very much well I might play with you every day that’s a crack I’m going to play golf with you all the time you w have that one back it’s new callway paradigm driver that’s get that get the FL [Laughter] again
