AK vs M16 Which would I choose??

Comparing two iconic platforms! How they handle and what’s probably the better all-around choice! The AK is specifically a Chinese Type 56 Spiker, and John’s M16A1 is wearing a carbine-length upper and short stock when we do this video.

  1. 0:11 “This is the AK-47 Assault Rifle, the preferred weapon of our enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired”- Gunny Highway/ Heartbreak Ridge 1986

  2. It's amazing to hear the difference when fired in full auto. Sounds like a helicopter until the last shot which is louder. Great video guys ❤

  3. I did 2 tours in Nam. The general concensus was as follows. You can fire AK ammo in a 16 but not vice-versa due to a slight caliber differential. Also… you can fire 10 mags on full auto with no prob with an AK. A 16 will sieze after 2 or 3 (due to the barrel heating up). However, everyone knew the difference in sound. If you picked up and fired an AK… you might get shot. The main benefit of the 16 was the slug tumbled. It did more damage in regards to long range wounding (shattered bone). I was in country when they took our 14s and gave us 16s. If you've ever carried a 14… a 16 was a welcome change. That's my old 2 cents worth. 🫡 Note: I was 20 when I came home after my 2nd tour. We were told a lot of stuff. You believed it… because you needed to.

  4. I was in the Army early 80’s shot the M16 quite a bit and had a lot of issues with it jamming even when it was clean as a whistle, definitely was not a fan.

  5. I shot my friends Chinese SKS that shoots the same round 7.62 as the AK-47. Let me tell you, that Chinese SKS was one of the most accurate rifles I have ever shot in my life. I was hitting inside the second bullseye ring from 40 yards away. You could shoot a grain of pepper of a fly’s ass with that thing! It’s a highly accurate rifle, even more accurate than the AK-47.

  6. Coming from a former socialist country and now living in the inner city.
It’s nothing like the sound of “that AK” you just know “it’s definitely dead “ what ever it is.😮

  7. I love the amount of people out there (generally non ex-military) who seem to think the big "win" for the AK is that you don't have to clean it…

Any soldier cleans their service rifle religiously. And the Vietnamese were certainly cleaning their AKs you can be sure of that! I'd say about 20% of your time at basic training involves stripping and cleaning your service rifle (at least in Australia that was the case). And if you didn't clean it, of course it was going to jam. The steyr aug jams like a mo-fo if you dont keep it clean and well oiled. So stop perpetuating this myth about not cleaning weapons. Even if you're using an AK, you should be cleaning that bitch daily haha

  8. i am no fan of chinese aks since they suck compared to russian or eastern europe models in general. but i think vietnam (and the descision to replace full auto with 3 round burst only) showed that the simple design and mechanics beat most 5.56 assault rifles. the only answers we and our neighbour belgium seem to have with out hk 416 and the belgian scar. m16a1 was just crap. on the other hand often chinese copies cost u an arm due to crappy steel and bad production , corrupt or no-show QC and so on. i would not recommend any of those ARs. if you got a 1911 as sidearm in a war situation throw the rifle away and carry more .45 extra mags and grenades :p

  9. R. Led Ermy did a AK vs M16 comparison years ago. The big difference I noted in his videos was accuracy. The M16 holds a much tighter group than the AK.

  10. Personally, I prefer the AR platform for it's accuracy. Really, most of the problems with the M16 were created by the US Ordinance Department. Stoner never claimed it was Maintenance Free. The Ordinance Department insisted on using up old powder stores from WW 1 and WW2 (old 30-06 WC 846 ball powder), instead of the IMR 4475 extruded stock powder both the 5.56 x 45 and the M16 were optimized to run with. Ball vs Extruded powders have completely different properties, the results being the M16s were being way overgassed and WC846 is dirtier than IMR 4475. The Ordinance Nerds created the problems the first M16s had. Had the weapon's and ammo been issued to Stoner's specs, the roll out would have been a lot less problematic.
The idea for Intermediate Cartridges came about due to the Nazis looking for a Fully Automatic Battle Rifle. They developed the 8mm Kurz from their 8mm Mauser cartridge. They realized that a full power cartridge like 8mm Mauser or 30-06, was hard to control and hard on the gun. The 9mm had proven to be a really good Submachine Gun Cartridge, so a less powerful, but still powerful enough to reach the 500 meter mark, would fill a very big role in battle. This the Stürmgewehr 44 was developed. The USSR really took to the idea and ran with it. Beating the West to an Intermediate Caliber Battle Rifle by nearly 20 years.

For the AR, I really like the .300 AAC/Blackout Cartridge. Ballistically, it's very similar to the 7.62 X 39 performance wise.

  11. Man looking at the 2 in full auto is so cool.
Both obviously very deadly but that m‐16 just sounds like a fine tuned high performance machine ❤

  12. I would choose either depending on what ammo I had available at the time. As a 19D Cav Scout we were trained on both platforms. As a soldier the M-16 and ammo loadout is quite a bit lighter for the same amount of ammo so that gives it a slight nod, but for the average civilian self-defense use case that is not as big of a deal.

  13. M16 in the hands of an Airborne Paratrooper = lots of late nights and early mornings in a love/hate relationship. She is all fun until it’s time to go to bed.
