I had always been able to hit a driver off the mat until I got a back injury a few years ago. Can’t hit it at all since. Will have to return to this exercise
Big takeaway here for hitting up on the ball is to never never lean back to hit up on the ball. (common for me to do) Rather focus on the lead shoulder from the top of the swing go down back and around to complete the swing. That is the only route to follow to hit up on the ball off the tee with a driver-
