  1. Edmonton Oiler fan, I was lucky enough to see 99 play a few times. I watched the trade press conference live. The whole city went into shock. We loved Wayne, but we loathed Peter Pocklington. Edmonton will never forget the great one. Thank you for all you did for us Wayne, we would not be the same city without you.

  2. Young Steve Y. & Wayne's World Circa 1989. That would've been a hell of a team, Probert on the Wing keeping an eye on Wayne. Wayne absolutely tea bagging all the plumbers in the Chuck Norris Division. What coulda been

  3. Imagine Gretsky joins Vancouver, owns half the team and then wins a cup with Linden and Bure. That's the Universe I want to live in.

  4. I was deploying too Cyprus on a UN peacekeeper mission when he was crying on TV and the dump truck full of money was being delivered. The Article in the Journal on this subject was excellent. It described how every Canadian felt for him and know one but the families was even aware that our soldiers leave all the time serving Canada. Priorities.

  5. I worked for Puck when he owned Palm Dairies in Edmonton. Gretzky was traded because Peter needed money. The Alberta Government was calling in his loan. McNall was the only guy who was able to come up with the required cash. Puck never cared about the players. Saw them as cattle

  6. That’s crazy it was the great Walt not his wife , will always be the great one all stars for life

  7. I remember hearing about all of this through the grapevine at the time (Apparently, some people in Vancouver at the time had some very loose lips) and thought to myself, “No way. That’s impossible… “ And, then years later when Gretz confirmed EVERYTHING via an interview on TSN I was like, “God damn!!!”

  8. I just worked with an older cat the other day that was last name Howe… hes like yep, Gordie's my cousin. And man this guy had some stories

  9. IT WAS NOTHING BUT GREED AND THAT SINGLE TRADE DIDN’T JUST RUIN SPORTS IT RUINED SOCIETY, PERIOD! Multi-million dollar salaries to play games that do little for society except entertain compared to everyone else… the average working class or firemen, tradesmen, teachers or even doctors and surgeons make peanuts! Look at the ridiculous salaries now… some nearing a half $BILLION dollars… to play a game!!! The average working class now realizing how little they’re worth put little effort into their craft anymore… including some of those ridiculously paid athletes! I’ve seen little leaguer's make better diving catches than some MLB outfielders! Judging by the ridiculously high cost of living today the only future benefit pro sports could provide to society, if their ridiculous salaries continue, will be to the kids today that are good at sports and get the opportunity to make sports their profession… maybe they’ll be able to afford a life!

  10. You know, people like to reminisce over the trade, talk about what could have been had he not been traded. How many more cups would Edmonton win?

The answer is one. Gretzky would have left in free agency by 1989 for Los Angeles anyway. And he would join Jimmy Carson and Mike Gelinas who never gets traded, wins two cups there. Wraps his career in New York.

Edmonton is forced to trade the rest of their team. They bottom out only to win the draft rights to Lindros, rebuild and win a Cup in 96 before trading him. They win more down the road.

  11. While Rome burns Canadians talk about stupid stuff. No wonder Trudeau running all over you. Now go to Tims for breakfast then McDonald's for lunch and have Pizza for dinner washed down with a Molson Light.

  12. I met you Wayne when you were with the LAKings I was handling your flight from toronto old terminal 1. Canadian Airlines who worked for had the contract for the Kings out of YYZ. Anyways I had a one on one with you for 5 minutes as you were walking to the plane. Hope to meet you again to tell you the story. Thanks Angela

  13. I remember when he was traded I was so mad, not because of the trade but because the press conference interrupted Saturday morning cartoons.

  14. this doesnt really explaine the why? coming up to the end of your contract isnt a reason. it was mind blowing seeing the greatest statistical athlete traded in his prime for seemingly no reason. theirs far more trades happening today and no ones giving up their top player yet edmonton tossed away the greatest player of all time.

  15. Most people don't understand that Gretzky was a pending unrestricted free agent, that Pocklington effectively had no choice but to trade him. They always reminisce about how many more Cups the Oilers would have won had Gretzky not been traded. But the answer is just one.
